Customer Reviews:
My favorite Dulcimer book!!.......1999-05-25
I bought my copy in the late 70s, and still rely on it constantly. This is THE best dulcimer book to get, as a first book and as one you'll return to again and again. In it Jean Ritchie, who is pretty much the mother of the last 20 yrars of the dulcimer revivals, explains how to tune the dulcimer for all of the various modes, not just the 2 or 3 most common ones. She also has songs using each of the modes, ones simple enough for beginners and interesting enough for experienced players. This is traditional dulcimer playing, using a noter for melody & the open strings as drones. For detailed information on chording, check out other books. But if you want to know how to play those songs that are in other keys/modes than mixolydian and ionian, and/or want a good, complete, basic book (for learning and for reference), this one is it! Jean's book include pictures, history and other information too, print is a comfortable size & the music is written out large enough to see & read easily while playing.
Product Description
Thirty-eight all-time favorite dulcimer solos penned artistically by Colorado's Bud and Donna Ford. This text is a resource for any dulcimer player and an excellent supplement to any course of instruction. It includes melody lines, lyrics, and chord symbols plus a solo arrangement of each song in standard notation and tablature.

Doc Stephens.......2007-05-16
I've ordered numerous books from Caiman. They have always been exactly as described and I have never had a single glich from this company. The "Mel Bay Dulcimer Chord Book" was exactly what my wife needed in order to better play the Mountain Dulcimer.
This book unlocked the dulcimer for me!.......1999-10-19
After I built my first dulcimer, it took me three years to understand how to play it. Neil's book was the key that unlocked the mystery. And, it fits right in my case!

Classic Dulcimer Reference.......2004-12-29
Hines did a masterful job of blending his scholarly research on the history of the "dulcimore" with his hands-on personal experience. An excellent craftsman, Hines writes from the perspective of one who builds and plays this mavelous American folk instrument. His photos and illustrations inspire amateur and experienced builders/players alike. Unlike some luthiers who guard their alleged secrets, Hines shares and explains his techniques without saving anything for selfish purposes. As Wendell Berry once wrote of someone "his hands know as much as his head." The book's inclusion of plans and tablature attest to the author's ability to think beyond the self. I believe he would be delighted to learn that his work has contributed to the appreciation and propagation of one of America's earliest folk instruments. Anyone who plays, builds, or appreciates this instrument and its history should capture a copy of this book. I treasure mine for all the reasons mentioned, plus a few more I'll not bore you with. Superb work. As a bonus, the foreword was written by none other than Roy Acuff -- talk about a tough act to follow.
An Interesting Read.......2001-03-26
This book has a great mixture of old-time playin, dulcimer construction, and history. Chet Hines really createes a friendly tome in this book, sure to spark your curiosity and make you want to start building immediately. His selection of old time songs is likewise indispensable. This book is well worth a read.
Product Description
This instruction manual and song collection is a well-crafted book of basic dulcimer technique and traditional songs that might have been popular in Cripple Creek, Colorado in the 19th Century-- plus a few modern day tunes by its current inhabitants. The techniques and songs have been transcribed from the performances of Bud and Donna Ford who have been collecting songs for their favorite instrument for some time. Bud and Donna explain the basics of playing the dulcimer, including instructions on strumming, tunings, and picking. Solos are offered in all of the various modes (Ionian, Dorian, Locrian, etc.) in standard notation only with lyrics and chord symbols. The end result is an attractive yet pragmatic book that offers a solid grounding in the art of dulcimer playing.
Customer Reviews:
Only so-so.......2006-06-20
I have so many other books that I like so much better than this one that I never pick this one up anymore. I haven't used even one of their songs in my repertoir. I think anything by Madeline MacNeil or Lois Hornbostel would be a better pick.
a decent collection, for beginners.......1998-07-22
a nice mix of all three tunings, one verse only of the songs, familiar songs. neat pictures of the 1890's Cripple Creek (Colorado), in which a couple of fires nearly destroyed the town.

Customer Reviews:
Great internediate dulcimer book!.......2006-09-20
This dulcimer book is quite good, with a great selection of hymns! The sheet music, words, and tablature are all there; and even a beginner could benefit greatly from this book. The extra chording options are a feature that even the experienced dulcimer player would enjoy. This is an excellent book for your dulcimer abilities to really grow with!
Book Description
Mark Nelson's knowledge and love of Celtic music is immediately evident through his choice of tunes for this comprehensive book. Harp music, the piper's repertoire, and fiddle tunes from Ireland, Scotland and Breton are all well-represented here, and a thorough historical foundation is carefully laid. Mark provides samples of Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes, Strathspeys, Polkas, Mazurkas, Slides, Marches, Piobaireachds, Set Dances, Airs, Plaxties, Country Dances, Morris Dances, as well as music from Breton in northwestern France. The CD contains 20 of the 109 songs from the book.
Customer Reviews:
A solid mix.......2007-01-28
An very good mix of tunes from a variety of Celtic traditions. Tunes are presented in standard notation and dulcimer tablature for all levels of players. There is a good but brief section on Irish ornamentation and a short introduction on reading tablature, but not much information on modal tunings. If you're content to just tune your dulcimer as shown for a given piece, then you'll like this. If you're after in depth discourse on modes and tunings, you'll need to look elsewhere. There is a surprisingly nice selection of Bretton tunes which are hard to find arranged for dulcimer.
Overall, one of the best books for the dulcimer player interested in a solid introduction to Celtic music. The CD contains about 20 of the tunes, but uses an electronic keyboard to accompany the dulcimer. Very pretty sounding, but a tutorial CD really needs to have the instrument clearly presented. The accompanyment muddles up things in places and makes it hard to hear the dulcimer. Tutorials should be concerned about instruction, not entertainment, so I rate it four stars instead of five.
Product Description
Every aspect of the hammered dulcimer and its playing techniques is covered in this comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand text. A masterful teacher, Madeline MacNeil exceeds the expectations of a beginner's book, providing a firm foundation for the development of a total musician while maintaining an engaging, informal tone throughout. With detailed discussions on dulcimer layout, hammers, tuning, and stands plus extensive performance notes on every tune, this book is a valuable asset to the beginning through intermediate player. From Oh Suzanna to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Madeline shows the novice dulcimer player how to "map your way through" a new piece of music, finding clear, musical directions through what at first must seem like a maze of strings. All tunes are in standard notation. The book's 87 pages are illustrated with photos as well as quaint woodcuts, engravings, and pen and ink drawings. The CD in the You Can Teach Yourself Hammered Dulcimer book/CD package is a play-along recording of all of the tunes in the corresponding book. Each tune is counted-off and played at a moderate tempo on solo hammered dulcimer for easy play-along.
Customer Reviews:
nicely organized.......2007-09-08
After seeing videos of hammered dulcimers on versious websites, I decided I would give it a try. But Before purchasing this instrument I wanted to see if I could indeed learn it using the book and accompanied DVD. I have only begun looking at the DVD but so far I think it is a great introduction to this instrument.
Awesome for Beginners.......2006-01-14
As an absolute beginner in learning the Hammered Dulcimer I looked at many books that were focused on the beginner... This is by far the best of the bunch... The primary thing that makes this book special is the way it links the courses on the dulcimer to the music itself... Other books seemed to forget that I don't know what strings play what note and am also new at sheet music... This book solved that by showing a diagram of the strings that are associated with the notes as well as the sheet music... Very helpful! Book also does a great job of working with fundamentals such as improving my left hand weak hits and mapping out the music on the various courses...
Also highly recommend the companion disc to hear the music...
Good luck on playing this beautiful instrument!

Customer Reviews:
Intermediate to Advanced Players Only.......2007-07-14
This is not a beginners books this is for intermediate-to-advanced players. The point of this book is to show readers ornamentation in Irish music. It is a well thought guide but it is aim is to help people who can play the basics but want to improve there playing and knowledge of the music. The one down side to this book is that the CD that comes with it does not have all the music in the book.
Playing thr Hammered Dulcimer in the Irish Tradition.......2000-04-13
Not for the absolute beginner (like me). Much more helpful once I got the accompanying tape.

Here's an eye-opener of a requirement!
In today's environment of emerging security threats, the U.S. Department of Defense has
recognized the critical need for highly-qualified, experienced information assurance
personnel.
To ensure a knowledgeable and skilled workforce the DoD has taken the necessary steps to
develop a directive that involves the credentialing and continuing education of all DoD
employees with privileged access to DoD information systems.
Specifically, the U.S. Department of Defense Directive 8570.1, signed in August of 2004,
requires every full- and part-time military service member, defense contractor, civilian and
foreign employee with privileged access to a DoD system, regardless of job series or
occupational specialty, to obtain a commercial certification credential that has been
accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
The draft manual, 8570.1M, specifies that the Department of Defense requires approximately
110,000 identified Information Assurance professionals to be certified within a five year time
period. The Defense Information Assurance Program office has divided its Information
Assurance workforce into six defined categories (see chart below). The manual also specifies
the types of commercial information assurance credentials that qualify for each of the defined
Great supplement to CISSP readings.......2007-03-09
I am using this book in addition to Shon Harris' CISSP book, and the ISC2 CISSP manual. This book works well for me as a high-level reference book and as an easy-to-carry/easy-to-read reference book when traveling. A must have book for those studying for their CISSP, but not the only book you'll need for certification. Amazon also had the best price and FAST delivery. I wouldn't purchase my books anywhere else.
Excellant prep resource for the CISSP .......2007-03-05
This book takes the original Shon Harris book, and explaines the 10 domains from a higher point of view. I would fully recommend reading this book, along with reading the Risk Management and Access Control section of the Shon Harris book.
The test questions are pretty simple, thus I do not recommend relying soley on them. [...] The test questions [...] are all written by CISSP's and closely resenble the questions that will be on the exam.
Good book to create a knowledge foundation.......2007-01-24
This book is older and I think it is a little outdated for current CISSP exam. That being said if you don't use this book as your sole source of CISSP studying , it is a great book. I found this book very informative for the very basics of the of security. Mike Meyers' Certification Passport CISSP is a great starting point to build your knowledge foundation. I would recommend The CISSP Prep Guide: Gold Edition.

Mike Meyers, the industry expert on professional certification, brings you this concise, affordable, and portable study tool for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. Customer Reviews:
Passing the test.......2006-06-18
The information in this book will not allow you to pass the exam. You need quite a bit more information. This book is not bad but if you want to study one book and attempt to pass security+ I'd get the examcram2 book. Also I'd highly reccomend taking pretests.
Insufficient to prepare for Security+.......2005-10-28
I have been working with computers professionally for over 20 years. Recently a client asked me to take the Security+ exam. I bought a copy of Mike Meyers' Certification Passport Security+ book and took the tests at the end of all 14 chapters to see what I needed to study. I missed 7 out of the 140 questions, or scored 95%. I felt I was ready to take the Security+ without any further study.
I just returned from taking the test. I scored 764, with a 764 being the minimum score to pass. I am totally humiliated. I am absolutely ashamed to show my client the 746 score after believing I would have a score I could be proud of.
FYI, when another client asked me to take the Net+, I scored 900. That was a year ago and I used ExamCram Net+ to guage my readiness to take the Net+. The ExamCram chapter tests were a much better reflection of the Net+ than the way Mike Meyers' Certification Passport Security+ book reflects the Security+.
Great starter book, but rely on this and you will be screwed.......2005-06-27
This is a great book for people who need a good overview of the exam. It's also a good book for people who are reviewing for the exam, it is not, however, a good book for the bulk of important material in the exam. The book is very high level and doesn't go into much detail. It's still better than the Exam Cram, which is a total piece of crap. I'd get this and then read a bigger book.
Great Book Excelent Study Aid.......2004-09-27
I used this book as a last week before testing study guide. It's great review of all the major key points. While it didn't go into deep detail on many of the subjects, it does outline all of them. If you can read each of the chapters within the expert time given at the begining of each of them then you're ready for the test. I got 890/900, Now it's time for the CISSP and I will definitly buy the Passport book for that.
I do agree with other reviewers though, this book is a review book and shouldn't be used alone.
Not so much a "Ticket to Exam Success".......2004-09-14
This book should not be used as your only form of study for the Security+ certification. Although helpful, it would best serve as a starter dish or desert for a more complete book like Gregory White's "All-in-one Security+ Certification". Defiantly not the main course.
