3 out of 5 stars Good instruction - Lame tunes.......2007-07-12

Many have already described how good the instruction in this book is. And rightfully so. So I will bring up the one negative which made me regret getting this book.

Apart from 2 or 3 songs such as John Barley, Sloop John B, etc., the songs used for demo are mostly lame ballads and fail to generate much excitement about playing them in me. The best tune is probably the opener, written by Mark Hanson himself. Also, most of these are sing-along types in which the vocal does most of the work instead of letting the guitar stay front and center. It would have been much better to feature mostly instrumentals where the lessons learned can be displayed in full glory.

3 out of 5 stars Corny vocals detract from decent book.......2007-05-24

The whole series of Mark Hanson books is excellent. I have this one as well as "Beyond Basics Fingerstyle Guitar", "The Art of Solo Fingerpicking", "Hymns & Spirituals For Fingerstyle Guitar". All highly recommended. He has a talent for breaking a piece down into manageable chunks. And his arrangements are accessible to the beginning to intermediate picker while still sounding awesome.

"The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking" rates at the bottom of the list due to the corny vocals on the CD. Perhaps incorrectly seeing this one as a follow on to "Beyond Basics," I was also a bit disappointed with the complexity of the arrangements. Otherwise, it is a decent book for beginning Travis pickers. "The Art of Solo Fingerpicking" is an excellent follow on.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-05-19

Could use more chord tablature. The CD is not good quality. I tried to contact the publisher for a replacement and was told (by Mark Hanson himself in fact) that since I bought it from Amazon I'd have to take it up with them and 'Good Luck, nyuk nyuk'.

Pretty shoddy. I won't be buying any further products from them. Buy a used copy if you must.

5 out of 5 stars Superb intro to Travis Picking.......2007-04-13

This is an excellent book. I started off with the Beyond the Basics book and went to this when I finished. My playing has improved dramatically. I went at a very slow pace, however, so it did take me many months to finish. I had a lot of trouble on the 3rd to last song (the Water is Wide) and was stuck on it for over a month, but had no trouble with the last two songs. If a new edition is ever printed I'd recommend resequencing that song to the end. I'd also recommend that Mr Hanson film a video for this, as the videos for the Beyond the Basics book helped me a lot.

My ultimate goal is to be able to play Leo Kottke music as well as write my own fingerstyle pieces. A year ago I would have thought such results were at least 3 years away, but after sweating this one through, I think I'm less than a year away...We will see if I still feel this way after I finish Hanson's Art of Solo Fingerpicking. See my review of that hopefully within the next 3 months (wishful thinking??).

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book.......2007-03-04

I am an advanced beginner/intermediate guitar player yearning to learn fingerpicking. This book is a graded, simple and easy to understand instructional manual in learning fingerpicking. From the first lesson, there are examples that sound great, can be used with a multitude of songs and are a lot of fun to learn. I've been through A LOT of books and am going to use this book (with Solo Fingerpicking as the next book I'll use when I'm done with this one) to assist my guitar lessons (in fact my guitar teacher is coming tomorrow night and I'm excited to share it with him and ask we use it as our workbook.

How to say it? I LOVE this book.

1 out of 5 stars If you already have any other guitar book don't buy this one.......2003-01-23

I just bought my first 12 string guitar.(my 6th guitar actually) I rushed on amazon.com to find a book to help me learn to play the 12 string. Bought this book and thumbed through it. The only thing I found in learning to play the 12 string was one page. Basically telling me to play both the strings at the same time. The rest was just like any other guitar book I have ever seen.
This book is very basic on it's approch to play the guitar, with nothing really about 12 string playing. I'll help anyone looking at this book right now. Play the pair of strings as one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-17

I love this book. Like others in the series it it informative. Easy to follow and well written. I would recommend this book in addition to others from this author.

4 out of 5 stars A great value for the price.......2007-01-19

I think that this book along with the DVD make a great introduction to fingerstyle guitar. I am a beginner and own several books that had information on fingerstyle techniques. I have found that the books that come with a DVD offer a better learning method that books with audio CDs only. Guitar Method Fingerpicking is carefully graded so that a beginner can gradually develop his skills and then move on to more complicated picking patterns. I highly recommend this book.

The DVD menu is logical and the video is split into 3 screens showing left hand, right hand and with a bottom pane showing the music score. The DVD and CD both contain the sample songs with a fingerstyle version and with lead guitar (melody) version so that you can play fingerstyle against the melody or vice versa.

Later chapters in the book introduce blues and ragtime fingerstyle techniques.

I highly recommend this to beginners and intermediates.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer!.......2005-08-02

This fingerpicking primer is worth getting to start your journey on to playing fingerstyle guitar. It's very easy to understand with its large notes and instructional written lessons. It's complete with many fingerpicking excercises, fretboard notes, chord charts, and musical glossary terms. I would recommend it highly if you want to diversified your guitar playing.

              4 out of 5 stars Amusing Diversion.......2005-08-03

The Dalek Survival Guide is a pleasant diversion for Doctor Who fans. It's by no means the most in-depth work on Daleks available, but its humorous presentation makes it unique. By no means a program guide, it divides its attention between identifying Dalek characteristics and providing pseudo-factual information on dealing with Daleks. Its premise is that the Daleks are real (and that Doctor Who was a documentary detailing the Doctor's actual adventures), and deals with the inconsistencies of Dalek history as incomplete histories and contradictory sources. A bit slow in the historical section, but overall quite amusing given its dry British humor. Probably for Doctor Who (or Dalek) fans only.

              4 out of 5 stars Nice..........2004-09-23

The Survival section is funny, but takes up a small part of the book. Most of the book deals with the history and background of the Daleks. A very detailed section of Dalek types and Dalek Special types, but much of the information in the book is available from other sources, both books and websites.
Nice to add to one's collection. A cool gift for a Dr.WHO? fan and cheap to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Humorous tie-in to most popular Who villains.......2004-03-02

OK, if you're a Doctor Who fan and further, a Dalek fan, this is a cute little pocket-sized book you can stick in your heavy duty anorak when setting foot on some alien world that looks like a deserted quarry.

This book is divided into three sections: Know Your Enemy, Supplemental Data, and Frequently Asked Questions. Naturally, a lot of this book is based on the TV series, but some are based on comic books and other tie-ins only diehard collectors have read.

Know Your Enemy-first off, there's a cut-away section of the Dalek, listing the 26 parts of the Dalek with separate listings for each component. Think of it identical to a guide to the buttons on your remote. For example, that screen-like mesh around the Dalek's head is an atmospheric absorption system for nutrients. Some of the entries are humorous, in case of the lights on top of the head: "while some documentary evidence suggests that the lights flash when the Dalek is not speaking, the most plausible theory to date is that the lights simply serve to indicate to other life-forms which Dalek is speaking."

After that, there is a series of Dalek pictures organized by rank, from Emperor Daleks, Daleks in their natural habitat, Invasion force Daleks, and standard Daleks, Imperial Daleks, Dalek Supremes, and of course, those powerhouse Special Weapons Daleks. Each Dalek type is identified by overall colour, colour of sense globes, the type of slats and colour, types of appendages (e.g. eye stalk, gun, iris-type, etc.).

The section on How To Survive Captivity With A Dalek contains some funny cartoons. In one, a Dalek tells a human, "I have seen no other humans in the vicinity," while there are some skeletons lying on the ground nearby. The caption reads, "Conclusion: The Dalek's immediate environs here suggest a lie."

Supplemental Data-this contains the various Dalek histories, including Terry Nation's original draft of the Daleks, and also a brief outline of Genesis Of The Daleks, the story explaining how the Daleks were created. They also detail the technology, such as Transolar Discs. However, the funniest section involves a sociological/psychological essay asking, "Are the Daleks all bad?" Examples: "When the Daleks exterminate hundreds of people, we should not simply condemn. We must ask ourselves, 'Where is the Art in this? What does it tell us about this race?'... Remember, the Dalek's perspective is just as valid as your own. All right, so you may not actually want to be exterminated, but try to appreciate--for once--the Dalek's point of view." Yeah, right!

The FAQ section answers questions like "Where Do The Daleks live?" or "Can Daleks swim?"

So if the Daleks do invade and you survive, chances are you are a Who fan, and have read this book and not just laughed at the humorous cartoons and witty entries.

Ideal for anyone new to Web programming on Windows and for anyone making the leap from the older ASP to the new ASP.NET, Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days offers an approachable guide to the latest in Microsoft .NET technologies. The author's example-packed and accessible presentation style help make this title a success.

In a three-week lesson plan (actually this book has 23 lessons, plus three extra "bonus" weekly sample programs), this text walks the reader through the essential APIs and programming techniques needed to use ASP.NET effectively. For those with some previous ASP experience, this book shows what's different (and better) in ASP.NET. (In fact, every chapter has a section marked "But That's Not ASP!" where the author points out gotchas and tips for navigating the richness and complexity of the new ASP.NET.)

After covering basic Web Forms and controls, the author looks at database support and ADO.NET, then XML, in subsequent sections. He uses an online banking application, which is enhanced after each full week, to show off techniques from each group of lessons. (His final, fanciful "BananaMobile" online application, however, might be a bit off the mark for some business readers.) Along the way, there's good coverage here of Web services and the basics of configuring and deploying ASP.NET applications on live servers. A late section on mobile controls glances at Mobile Web controls.

Like other titles in the Teach Yourself series, every lesson presents the reader with a handful of questions (usually about a half dozen), with thorough answers provided in a reference appendix. In all, this title will make ASP.NET accessible for just about anyone, with or without exposure to the older ASP standard. Clearly written and well organized, the author covers a lot of material but doesn't get bogged down with the somewhat daunting details of .NET. --Richard Dragan

I might be crazy, but reading this book was actually a lot of fun! It covers everything you need to get going with ASP.NET. The focus early on with Access databases was a little rough for me because i was looking for more info on SQL (it does cover sql later on btw). The layout of the lessons felt good, and the author wasn't to 'rambley', which made it easy to read for hours and hours.

2 out of 5 stars NOT for beginners.......2007-06-03

I spent 2 months on day 1. If the author had simply added, "If you can't install IIS, you can use Personal Web Server, which comes free from Microsoft," it would have saved me a lot of time. I gave up on the book.

              1 out of 5 stars Codes don't work????.......2006-05-10

I am perplexed at the users that rated this publication highly and I would be very interested in speaking with them to find out how they got the codes to work. About 80% of the codes that I type from this book result in me reiceiving errors in my application - even if I type it exactly the way the book does! I do not understand why Sams publishing would allow this book to be published and I would STRONGLY reccomend that browsers interested in this book do not purchase it. Especially if you are new to programming because it is extremely confusing for new users. I have a background in programming and I find it confusing at times. However the book's biggest disadvantage is that is the coding errors! I even downloaded the codes directly from the publisher and they still throw errors. So I know its not my mistake in typing them out because the downloaded ones from the publisher do not work either!

              2 out of 5 stars Disappointing layout.......2006-04-04

Although the technical examples are acceptable, I found it difficult to follow the book and progress at a decent pace.

When you start the book, I believe you start with the objective of either learning VB or C# and then possibly learning the other language at a later stage. Some people may have the objective of both languages at the same time, however these I believe would be in the minority.

This is where I found the layout of the book to be atrocious. The author flips from one language to the other and then discusses general things in the next paragraph.

In my opinion, it would be very easy to put a VB identifier or picture next to the VB stuff and a C# identifier or picture next to the C# stuff to make it easy for the reader to work on the stuff s/he is interested in.

It's as if the book was written for VB and then the C# stuff was plugged in afterwards in a hurry to widen the audience. This is very confusing and slows your progress down because you are continuously wasting time by reading the C# stuff if you want to focus on VB and vice versa.

A little bit of thought on the layout would go a long way to improve the readability of the book.

My second criticism of the book is my personal choice and opinion. I believe the examples should be presented with a decent coding tool such as Visual Studio 2003 / 2005 and not in Notepad. I think very few (professional) developers nowadays code in NotePad. Even a free tool from Microsoft such as one of the Express Editions would be a better editing tool than NotePad.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with easy to follow examples.......2005-05-11

What I liked about "ASP.NET in 21 Days" is the style of the author.

You see, the author wastes no time, from the very first few chapters of the book he packed it with valuable information, and advanced topics that no other author dares to touch till almost the end of the book.

The style of the author is easy to follow and simple to understand. He takes an advance topic, and guides you thru by examples and elaborating on the examples. He introduces the topic, and follows up with examples.

The author shows you from the first few chapters how to create a cookie, and access keys and values of cookies, and the collection of cookies; all in easy to follow steps.

In another chapter the author introduces loops, and he elaborates on the various types of loops and when to use one over the other.

In another chapter he will teach you how to create a user's control, and a custom control all one step at a time. One thing I noticed though is the author forgets to tell those users that have visual studio.net installed on their computer; not to use the Dos command to compile a custom control VB file, and to use instead the command from the Visual Studio.net tools.

The author divided the book into 21 lessons; each lesson ends with a little quiz just so that the author makes sure that you learned the subject material, and he gives you a test, and assign a little project for you to do; he will even gives you the answers to the quizzes, and do the projects for you at the end of the book. He also gave some valuable bonus lessons at the end of the book.

Each chapter the author has in the book delivers valuable information to understand ASP.Net, and a basic knowledge of html is all that is required.

Each chapter in the book will make you feel like you are in a classroom and the author is there to guide you thru learning in an easy and simple style.
