"Compelling reading."- Mojo

"A riveting account of the singer's life."- Daily Express

Cockney child actor Marriott was singer, songwriter, and guitarist with 1960s pop stars The Small Faces before joining Peter Frampton to form Humble Pie-one of the biggest bands in the United States in the early 1970s.

Tragically, just before a 1991 comeback, Marriott died in a house fire. An influence on Rod Stewart, Marriott is adored by Blur, Oasis, and Paul Weller.

All Too Beautiful was published in hardcover to universal critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the 2005 US ARSC (Association for Recorded Sound Collections) Awards for excellence in historical recording research.

3 out of 5 stars Sad story of a great talent that never reached his potential.......2007-06-08

This is a story fleshed out through numerous interviews with people who were connected or involved with Steve Marriott at various points in his life. It is a sad story that I found quite frustrating at times (as a fan) because you realise how the booze, drugs and record industry parasites distracted and distorted his talent to further develop his musical talents.

5 out of 5 stars Cheers to the Pieman!!!!! R.I.P........2006-10-27

I've always thought Marriott was a truely gifted musician and Humble Pie was a truely exceptional ban, but I knew very little about Steve's earlier times with the Small Faces and before. My only complaint about this book is it was written by Mods and mainly for Mods. By this I mean that almost 2/3 of the story takes place before Humble Pie happened and the authors lament endlessly through out the remainder of the book about how the quality of Marriott's music was never as good after the Small Faces. That is simply untrue. There are certainly many Humble Pie fans around that would disagree. The great Humble Pie albums like 'Rock On' are scarcely mentioned, 'Smokin' gets a whopping 1/2 page review. 'Eat It' which is certainly the best Pie album gets slammed. Everyone always complains about the sound quality of 'Eat It', it's been years since I listened to the album, but I think the reissued CD certainly does the sound justice. 'Thunderbox' is deemed the best Humble Pie album but in reality is probably the sixth out of nine. Anyway the entire Humble Pie saga runs 40 pages. Steve's life after Humble Pie is really kind of sad and at times funny. He would tell anyone where to get off. He also had a very chronic drug and alcohol problem which was surely the cause of most of his bad luck and untimately claimed his life. Having said that it was a great read and I couldn't put it down. Marriott was a huge talent and his music is alot better that 99% of the dribble that passes for song nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars The stuff operas are made of.......2006-01-28

Paolo Hewitt has done a good job of describing the tragi-lovely life of Steve Marriott, a serious rock and roller who lived to make music, instead of making music to get rich. (Readers will be shocked by how little money he made.) Clearly Marriott was gifted, funny, infuriating, and damaged by years of betrayal. The tragic parts were mitigated by Steve's optimistic outlook. The book is well researched, well-written, non-judgmental, and has a good selection of photos. I recommend Ian MacLagan's book, "All The Rage", as a good follow-up read. (MacLagan's book has a happy ending, which you will crave after reading the Marriott bio.)

    5 out of 5 stars Grappling master!.......2006-12-02

Judo Gene continues to show us all what true masters of martial arts are, and he uses humor to illustrate his techniques. As a fellow martial arts instructor this book has more than helped my ground technique, but also reaffirms my belief in being humble.Judo gene and his crew are the BEST, i have had the pleasure of meeting them, they are even nicer in person.

5 out of 5 stars You will be tapping out just reading this masterpiece!.......2005-05-02

...and I thought MY book, "The Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling" was huge! This book is MASSIVE and jam-packed with awesome ideas.

Once you have the basics down (which realistically can take years to master) you are ready to get creative and learn from the best. Gene and Gokor have compiled, what in my opinion, is the FINAL word on submission holds.

This book is so amazing that you will be tapping out just by merely reading it. I have personally trained at Gokor and Gene's dojo and this book is the next best thing, believe me.

3 out of 5 stars Good Techinques with Humor same thing for $7.99 @ USBJJ.COM.......2003-11-21

Judo Gene LeBell knows his finishing holds. However, there is way too much humor and not enough effective holds. Alot of the holds are "pain" holds-- meaning they would cause some pain but a determined opponent will not submit to them. I fought NHB I know what I'm talking about. "Submission" holds by definition make the opponent submit or quit or you will break his arm, leg, etc. or choke him unconscious. If you want 100% submission holds with no humor and WWF pain holds go to USBJJ.COM where for $7.99 you can get hundreds of finshing holds, many of the exact same ones here, without humor and without worrying about whether this is a painful inconvenience hold or a real submission hold.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2003-10-13

I give this book four stars because it opens up one's world to whole new possabilities of submission holds. The holds are classified by what part of the body they work, and the possition of the limb (ex.- "Bent arm locks"). The sheer scope of information makes this book an invaluable one to anyone involved in MMA and submission wrestling. As a bonus, the book also has a section on grappling with a club, which may be useful to stickfighting practitioners who are trying to expand thier techniques. The books strongest points are it's clear photos, even clearer instructions, and the vast variations of a single hold that were shown. The downside was that there wasn't too much about maneuvering, possitioning, or takedowns, but that's not really what the book was about, anyway. I liked the authors sense of humor, but in my opinion, it was a little distracting. Maybe other readers will appreciate it more. But for it's subject matter (submission holds), if I had to chose one book, this would be it. When I started grappling, I knew nothing about sweeps, takedowns, controling, or positions, but thanks to my reading LeBell's earlier works, I was able to tap out experienced BJJ guys and amature wrestlers alike with ease. It's because LeBell gives the reader holds that he can use from any position he may find himself in. GET THIS BOOK!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy, yet enjoyable to read........2003-04-19

Let me state right out front that you should not rely on this book to teach you practical submissions. I'm sure when properly applied the submissions in this book would hurt like hell, but the chances that a living breathing human being, trained or untrained in grappling would sit back and let you do some of these things to them is rediculous. Quite a few of these submissions would require a willing opponent making these submissions more suitable for "Wrestling Entertainment", then a real Submission Grappling match. If I ever see a Grappler accomplish any of the moves that the book labels as the "Lebellian Series" in a real match, I will have to aknowlage a true master. To pull some of these moves off you'd have to bypass the obvious finish, and complicate things.

That being said, there are some practical submissions in this book, more anyway than a lot of reviewers are giving credit for. The problem with those subs is not that they couldn't work, but that the steps to accomplish these subs are missing, with only pictures of the before and after with little, if anything, in between. It takes previous knowlage and experience to understand how to make these practical techniques work.

Where this book really succeeds is as a fun read for those who know something about grappling and want to get a taste of the personallity of Gene Lebell, who is a legend and pioneer in American Grappling, and who is quite a character as is evident in this book.

Although, this is not THE soure for grappling, you could do worse. Besides, it's amusing to read and look at people twisted into strange human pretzels.

The most beloved, most groundbreaking, and most entertaining TV comedies of all time are celebrated in words and pictures—many of them rare—by the award-winning authors of Broadway Musicals.

In 101 lively chapters and lots of special features, the authors of Broadway Musicals explore our favorite form of popular entertainment—the TV situation comedy. Book Description

TV's Greatest Sitcoms is the first comprehensive look at the top situation comedies of the past six decades. From the early hits of I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet and Leave It to Beaver to revolutionary '70s comedies like All in the Family and M*A*S*H, it includes classic recent success stories from Seinfeld to The Osbournes. In all, the book covers over 150 comedies including “The 20 Most Influential Sitcoms of All Time.” Behind-the-scenes stories include the author's personal discussions with comedy greats like Mary Tyler Moore, Eddie Albert from Green Acres, Shelly Fabares of Coach, Alan Young from Mr. Ed, and the actors who played Beaver Cleaver, Eddie Haskell, Mike Seaver, Greg Brady, Elly Mae Clampett, Goober Pyle, and Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. Get the inside story on the death of the sitcom format in 1983 and its resurrection with The Cosby Show or the daycare roots of popular modern comedies like Friends. The book uses ratings information to prove that more people watched The Munsters and Gilligan's Island than any comedy on TV today and debunks the opinion that The Simpsons is now the longest-running comedy in television history. The book also names the ten “worst sitcoms of all time” and the actors who have appeared in the most situation comedy flops.

3 out of 5 stars Informative but too wordy.......2006-02-27

Very informative; discusses many concepts and targets intermediate to advanced programmers. However, too bloated with things like

"When a program opens a file and reads from the file, the program will later have to close the file to allow other programs access the file".

The authors must have never heard of "it", "they", and other time-saving features of the language. This makes it tedious and boring at times. I'm sure better books exist, but they (the books - get it? :) may not be as in-depth or contain as many examples.

4 out of 5 stars different kind of vb book - ok for beginers too.......2005-05-29

Its really not that advanced and does a very thorough review of basic programming concepts.

It does have that wordy textbook feel to it, which makes you wonder what happend to the questions at the end of the chapter. But its thorough and really gives you a good understanding of the VB language if you've never done any VB programming.

Good or bad, it spends most of the first 8 chapters programing in console, no fun GUIs till chapters 9 and 10. Which is a bit odd as most of the VB books I peeked at jump right into the GUI. This may make it boring for those of us who are "visual learners".

5 out of 5 stars This book helps you get up to speed on VB .NET quickly.......2003-03-20

I recently finished reading Visual Basic .NET for Experienced Programmers by Deitel, Deitel, Nieto, and Yaeger, and found it to be very well written and a great tool to learn Visual Basic .NET. The book covers all the important aspects of Visual Basic .NET (the IDE, object-oriented approach, graphical user interface, multithreading, XML, ADO .NET, ASP .NET and Web services, and the mobile Internet) in approximately 1000 pages - quite a feat. Each chapter contains several entire programs ('Live-code examples') and thorough explanations of the code, to illustrate the concepts covered in the chapter. Some of the sample programs are fun, such as dice, tic tac toe, and blackjack games. The book provides clear explanations of why and how things works (chapters on ASP .NET - chapters 17 and 18 - are especially good at making the complexities make sense). The authors also emphasize the terminology of object-oriented programming (explaining terms such as composition, self-referential classes, and abstract data types).

The only minor complaint I have about the book is that it doesn't provide any programming assignments (except for one small task) for the reader.

Although I haven't read other books on Visual Basic .NET (other than approximtely 100 pages of Balena's Visual Basic .NET Core Reference - which I found tedious), I feel that by reading and studying the Deitel book you will gain a solid base of knowledge about Visual Basic .NET.

5 out of 5 stars It deserves its price more than twice.......2002-12-10

It is easy to read. You must keep it on your desk as long as you continue programming in Visual Basic. I have found different programming styles and approaches. Actually I did not finish it yet. It is not easy to read it all in few weeks. It is filled up with knowledge of programming. I can suggest this book to any visual basic programmer. Because They can use this styles and approaches in VB 6.0, 5.0 etc too. Maybe you will learn this knowledge in two years but with this book you will make it very short. Time is money. So go on...

          1 out of 5 stars boring,boring, boring, avoid!.......2002-08-31

This is a rehash of the same Deitel style textbook which I suffered through in school. They were boring, boring boring then, they are boring boring boring now.

You would be much better off buying Gary Cornell's great book from Apress which has a similar title. It's much cheaper, much better written and it's not boring, boring, boring. Unlike the Deitel's, Cornell can teach real programmers with boring them.

The Deitel's seem to have created an industry of writing boring wordy textbooks and now they want to move into the Apress/Microsoft Press/O'Reilly space for books about .NET.

They don't offer anything over the established books that I have praised elsewhere so do yourself a favor and get the Apress book by Cornell. Then get the Balena book from Microsoft Press to learn how to apply .NET and you won't need anything more. With these books you'll learn a lot more and you'll save money to boot over the Deitel book.

          — Dan Mabbutt, Visual Basic Guide on About.com

In Programming VB .NET: A Guide for Experienced Programmers, authors Gary Cornell and Jonathan Morrison carefully explain the exciting new features of Visual Basic .NET. Since VB .NET is, for all practical purposes, a whole new language even for the most experienced Visual Basic programmers, developers need to think differently about many familiar topics. Cornell and Morrison are there to help you with careful discussions of each topic.

5 out of 5 stars Will help you make the transition from VB6 to VB.NET.......2002-10-17

The book is primarily designed for experienced Visual Basic developers making the transition to VB.NET. However, it can also be appreciated by other experienced programmers regardless of their programming background.

The book begins with an introduction to the differences between VB.NET and VB. The next chapter introduces you to the new Visual Studio .NET integrated development environment (IDE). You will get a tour of the main windows, and learn how to compile and debug your VB.NET applications. Chapter three teaches the VB.NET syntax. You will learn the VB.NET expressions, operators, and program control flow. The next couple of chapters form the core of the book. These chapters cover object oriented programming and inheritance. VB.NET is the first truly object oriented programming version of VB, and a solid understanding of these new features is essential in taking full advantage of VB.NET's new powers.

The next few chapters go on the cover important topics such as, event handling, error handling, building user interfaces, input/output streams, and multithreading. The final two chapters give a brief introduction to database access with VB.NET using ADO.NET, and a brief overview of ASP.NET.

The book provides clear and complete coverage of all topics. It includes many real world code examples which help the reader to better understand all the concepts presented.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the Beta but a little long in some chapters.......2002-10-11

This is a pretty-good book if you base it on the Beta. The chapters on OOP (Chapters 4 - Classes and Objects and 5 - Inheritance and Interfaces) are very long. Chapter 4, 5 and 6 (Event Handling and Delegates)form the heart of this book, but I would have broken them down into smaller chapters. The information in those chapters provide a good introduction to OOP. At times, I felt the authors were hard to follow and found myself re-reading several pages especially in Chapters 4 and 5. Overall this book probably is about 3 1/2 stars. I am hoping that in the next release of this book that the authors would follow their own advice and break the chapters down into smaller parts. ...

4 out of 5 stars Well written and hard to put down.......2002-07-25

I bought this book and several others to prepare myself for the transition from VB6 to VB.NET. I wish they would have covered the disconnected datasets, ADO.NET and ASP.NET in more detail. I would have given it 5 stars if it had.

Other than that, I feel that it is an excellent resource to prepare a programmer from any background for VS.NET. It does a good job of covering the OOP, Inheritance, Overloading, and multithreading subjects in a concise manner.

The book also has a web site for errata and source code. Gary Cornell is a good author and it shows in this book he co-authored.

I have a few Wrox Publishing Books, but my library is starting to collect more an more APRESS books because their style and format is what I expect from a book.

Wrox does publish some good books also:
I would also recommend .NET Enterprise Development in VB.NET from Design to Deployment, ISBN 1861006179, (Wrox Publishers)

          3 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......2002-07-20

This book simply doesn't have enough information to be named "a guide for EXPERIENCED programmer". It is rather a quick overall introductions. So don't get this book if you need to get some serious work done.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, clear and to the point.......2002-07-03

Of all the books I bought to learn VB NET, this is the one I find myself turning to repeatedly for information on object oriented programming. The author' treatment of inheritance and delegates/events are models of clarity. I also found his treatment of mutithreading to be clearer and far easier to understand than the new Wrox book which was supossedly devoted to threading. If you want a book on the VB NET language you can't do any better than this one!
