Book Description
Soul Sacrifice is the first ever biography of Carlos Santana-the most famous Latin American musician in the world. This genuine "rags to riches" story traces his life from a childhood playing Mariachi music on the streets of Tijuana, through to worldwide superstardom.
Founded on his own unique Afro-Latin-Blues guitar sound, his eponymously-named multi-racial band, emerged from the late sixities San Francisco scene and gained instant legendary status following their raptuously received set at Woodstock. Through subsequent LPs like Abraxas and Santana III, the band have gone on to sell over 35 million albums and played to millions across the globe. Carlos Santana's musical journey has also embraced a number of intriguing tangents, including complex jazz odysseys like Caravanserai and Welcome and collaborations with John McLaughlin, Alice Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.
After receiving a lifetime achievement award from Billboard magazine in 1996, Santana recently returned to the fray with his first studio album in seven years. Featuring collaborations with Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews and Eric Clapton, Supernatural once again placed Santana at the number one spot on Billboard's US chart-as did its first single, "Smooth"-confirming the longevity of Santana's appeal.
Simon Leng has enjoyed unprecedented access to band members and associates, and most importantly Carlos Santana himself, producing a gripping portrait of a World Music pioneer who is also one of the most distinctive and influential guitarist of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Everything Is Coming This Book's Way.......2007-07-27
I pretty much lost track of Santana after the third album, Santana III, until his resurgence a few years back. This book nicely fills in the gaps and makes the band's somewhat long and complicated discography finally clear as to where one should look back for lost gems. Mostly, way back. But no matter. Santana's music was always a cut above, going back to the early days in San Fran, no small thanks to the use of Latin percussion on many of the classic cuts. You won't find out much dirt from this tome, written by a former fan mag editor. But you will be taken back to a time when music making was slightly less corporate, though this was one of the bands that helped corporatize rock after Woodstock. This is a better written band bio than one would expect, though too light on previously unseen photos.
needs to do more research.......2000-11-03
As a historian, I was excited to read this book. Beginning to read it, however, the author wrote that Santana was born in 1947. He then states that Carlos returned to his home town in 1986 for his 53rd birthday. The author also makes a major mistake recounting the legend of our Blessed Virgen de Guadalupe, stating that the bishop was sent to investigate her appearance, and that her image appeared on his cloak. It was, in fact Juan Diego who was sent back to her to bring proof of her existence and it was his cloak that her image appeared on. The rest of the book was soured by these early inaccuracies. One wonders what other inaccuracies are listed as fact regarding Carlos Santana. It just goes to show you can't always believe what you read.
A good book about a great artist.......2000-09-22
First, I am a professional guitarist of 25 years who believes Carlos Santana has only four guitar peers: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, George Benson, and John McLaughlin. So this is a biased review. And now the review:
It's about time a book attempts to document the history and significance of this important musician and band. Mr. Leng, a first-time author, has done a fine job. Here are six challenges that Mr. Leng met with impressive success:
(1) Explaining how a very specific aspect of Mexican music - playing melodies expressively - influenced Carlos's style.
(2) Explaining how each individual member influenced the band's sound.
(3) Explaining the difficulties of keeping everyone - from pop fans to jazz fans to record companies to managers to musicians - happy.
(4) Explaining Carlos's conscious recording of "corny" commercial music to finance the recording of his more adventuresome music.
(5) Explaining how Carlos is trapped (for better and for worse) in the "Santana Band."
(6) Explaining the true weight / quality / genius / level / importance / influence of Carlos and the band.
(7) Explaining the greatness (and that's an understatement) of the percussionists which have played in the band, particularly Armando Peraza.
(8) Documenting the long list of non-Santana band artists with whom Carlos has recorded.
Sooner or later a professional music historian will publish a more comprehensive book - say 1,000 pages. This book will be aimed at more serious students of music history.
The book will expand as follows:
(a) It will discuss Carlos's equipment. Carlos has influenced electric guitar and amplifier design more than any other modern guitarist except Jimi Hendrix. (b) It will explain in musical terms why Carlos's playing has so much "feeling." Put simply, Carlos uses a large variety of subtle nuances to make every note count. Like Pavarotti and Isaac Stern.
(c) It will contain hundreds of photos.
I wish I could be the author of this great book. I would title it "Espiritu - Carlos Santana."
Finally, A Santana Bio.......2000-07-06
This biography does an excellant job in covering the early life of Carlos Santana and his entire career in his band. The information is based mostly on facts, and doesn't offer enough emotional insight from Carlos and his other band members. This book also didn't have enough about Carlos Santana's spiritual and political views. Basically, this book does an amazing job at covering the chronology of the band, information about each album, and information about the different guys who played with the band at one time or another. Look mainly to this book for straight facts and an excellant biography of Carlos' early life and the beginning of the first Santana band. Don't be surprised if there isn't much emotional insight or highly detailed information about the Santana band past 1974. The only thing better than this book would be if Carlos wrote his own biography.
Well researched and written.......2000-05-07
This is THE definitive book on a great artist whose contributions to cultural expression through music is under-appreciated today. Leng aptly describes Carlos Santana's early years, the struggles toward and accompanying fame, and the challenges he had to overcome along the way (cultural and professional). If you love music of any kind, you will enjoy this taste of history; if you appreciate Santana especially, you will savor this biographical feast.

Book Description
The ancient poets tell us that in the year 776 B.C. a young cook from Elis won a great footrace in a meadow near the river Alpheus at Olympia. The youth, Coroebus, was crowned with a wreath of wild olive twigs and thus became the first recorded victor in the ancient Olympic Games. From this beginning there evolved an alliance of sport and the arts that no culture or civilization since the Greeks has been able to achieve. During the summer of 1984, a collection of scholars, athletes, and artists from various disciplines convened in Coroebus's honor to celebrate the alliance of sport and the arts with the formation of the Sport Literature Association. The papers in this volume, most of which were presented at the Coroebus Conference, are devoted to examining and furthering the understanding of that alliance. The Coroebus Conference, and particularly the resulting writings compiled in this volume, are a long overdue recognition of a neglected relationship. This book could well provide the impetus to recapture the alliance from which both sport and the arts benefitted so well in the past. Originally published in 1989.

Product Description
From cartoons to cooking, science fiction to shopping, twenty-first century television seems to have a channel for every kind of programming. Today, a national networking capability is no longer necessary for a profitable television venture, and the old distinctions between channel (i.e., local programming) and network (national programming) have been erased. Television now offers hundreds of channels to a nationwide audience. This reference book offers a comprehensive listing of more than 750 channels and networks (the book uses whichever term the broadcaster has adopted) widely available in the United States and Canada. Programming genres vary widely and include news, sports, movies, music, religion, and more. The alphabetically arranged entries give channel name, contact information, launch date and first broadcast day. A brief description of broadcast structure and history is also included, and many entries also contain a brief list of major shows and their subject matter. An introduction to the work provides a concise history of the television industry, discussing major differences in the development of Canadian and American networks with special emphasis on the role of the government in each.

Customer Reviews:
Too many mistakes.......2006-06-27
I purchased this book in hopes of using it as the last bit of preparation material prior to sitting for the CCNA exam. However, like the previous two posts, I was shocked at the amount of mistakes and typos thoughout the book. Due to the amount of mistakes, I am not able to recommend this book. This is a real shame as I enjoyed the writing style and layout.
Worthless.......2006-06-14
I will second the above opinion..this book is worthless. If you're someone who already knows the material, you don't need to re-read it..but if you're someone studying, trying to learn technical information that must be exact, what is the sense when you can't be confident the material you're studying is even correct. It's true, the Exam Crams used to be great, awesome, my only study guides and I always did well, but unfortunately I can't say that know. Not only are they filled with errors, but the books now totally miss the mark when it comes to teaching you what you need to know to pass exams. These books seem to say tell you "you'll need to know this" and "you'll want to study this," rather than actually include useful information. Well Cisco tells everybody what you will be tested on, you don't need an Exam Cram to tell you that. Buy the books from Cisco, assuming they're recent or Todd L's stuff instead, you'll pass with confidence. This Exam Cram is a waste of time, really.
Loaded with mistakes...........2006-06-14
Well its well written and the chapters flow quickly, but thats the only good thing. Otherwise the book is an absolute piece of s___, There were so many errors that I got the point where I doubted half the answers to the prep questions. The diagrams and command line examples were wrong and in some places mislabeled. I was originally highlighting and correcting the mistakes in the hope of sending them to the publisher, but there are so many its not even worth it. Oh and I could not find any sort of corrections or errata page at examcram.com or quepublishing.com.
Overall, there were so many mistakes I ended up buying Odom's and Lammle's book so that I could doublecheck all the information I was reading. Whats the point of buying a technical book if you only have to buy another book to confirm the information? It's sad because the examcram series used to be so good.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2007-09-29
The author does a wonderful job of organizing the objectives in this book. I read half the Sybex book before purchasing this one and there is a pretty substantial difference. The Sybex book tends to jump around on tangents somewhat while this author keeps you learning from the ground up, staying true to the topic, and building you up to the end! Buy this book, and some sort of router simulation product like Sybex's routersim (assuming you don't have your own hardware), and get the practice test off selftestsoftware.com. Do all the great labs at the end of every chapter in this book as well. I can almost guarantee you pass, and more importantly actually learn the material for the real world! I did it on the first try with barely knowing IOS at all. Good luck!
Clear and Concise Coverage.......2007-09-13
After reviewing several CCNA study guides, I chose the Exam Prep CCNA 640-801 book for its clear, concise, yet thorough explanations of CCNA material.
I just learned that the 640-801 exam will be retired in November 2007. As a result, I am looking forward to the Exam Prep CCNA 640-802 book.
If you are new to networking, use this book over Sybex.......2006-06-24
First off don't get me wrong the Sybex book is great. However, if you weren't really familar with networking terms it is hard to just jump in and start reading.
I do have to say that this book is better at helping new people in to the networking world. The author does not jump around with terms. He will explain it to you before he will use it. Some of the other books out there will use terms and not even explain them until 3 chapters later.
GREAT BOOK.......2006-03-02
This book is GREAT/ While some of the lingo is a little hard to understand, and I had to reread some of the passages a few times to undersatnd what they were trying to explain to me, overall I full Recommend this book. I would also suggest gewtting the CCNA dummies book and use them together. With these two books, its very likely you will pass..... maybe not the first time, but this makes it possible.

A good overview, complements other study materials.......2005-08-09
This book shouldn't be your only study guide for the test. However, I think it should still be in your study materials as it offers several perspectives that others fail to address. A good study guide combo would be this book, the sybex book, and a form of computer study material (questions). I would stay away from the Cisco Official book as it's not as effective. So for what it is, this was a good book to have (I still reference it for CCIE and used it for my CCNP). Hope this helps!
No confidence !!!.......2005-06-23
I just took the practice exam for 640-821 (chapter 11) after having read the 10 chapters and extensively reviewed "Part 1" of the book, chapters 2 -7 for the first half exam of the CCNA. I found very little correlation between the chapters and the practice exam questions. It seems that many of the questions for the 640-821 practice exam are taken from material covered in chapter 10 which is supposed to be for exam 640-811. I have no confidence in the book and its division of the required material for each exam!

5th printing's still a mess.......2006-01-09
Passed CCNA 6 years ago and now need to recertify. Had really like Exam Cram 6 years ago so I ran out and bought the latest version. What a difference 6 years made in quality! There are so many errors in the practice tests I had to go through them all, fix the errors and then make another attempt. C'mon guys, the 5TH PRINTING! 2 CCNA's could have fixed all the errors. Have used Exam Cram in the past (up to 5 yrs ago) and they were good. Obviously, the rate at which they churn out these books has seriously affected their quality. And yes, I downloaded the errata. It only covers up to the 3rd printing. One more thing, the cd by PrepLogic only holds a "demo" version of the tests. Includes 1 55 question sample test and then asks you to go buy the others.
I'm off to buy the Sybex CCNA book (Todd Lammle). I had this one 6 years ago and the reviews say its still really good.
Bad, bad, and what was that other word, Oh yeah, BAD!!!.......2006-01-04
This book has a good part and a bad part. The first part of the book contains information that you should already know if you are studying to take the CCNA. The second part, the stuff that supposedly covers the CCNA material - SUCKS!!! And since this book is about earning the CCNA, I can not recommend it to anyone.
I intended to use this book to go from the start to finish actually using a real Cisco router. The material is so chopped up and scattered through this book that you can't find anything actually helpful.
I would recommend any other book other than this one. There has to be something better than this.
Way off the mark.......2005-11-09
I have to give the book some credit for explaining some of the basic concepts that act as a foundation for the stuff you learn later on. An example of this is the high level explanations of distance-vector vs link-state routing protocols etc.
On the flip side of things this book does a terrible job with getting down to the specifics that you are going to need to know for the exam. An example of this is the section on VLAN's and switching.
The book covers some of the basics like telling you that you have to set up a trunk to span a VLAN across multiple switches, but gives very little or no detail on how to go about doing it.
It has just one page explaining what VTP is, but again does not even mention how to configure or troubleshoot it.
The majority of the information in this book is very high level and makes no effort to really go in the depths of configuring and troubleshooting you are going to need for the exam.
If you are really new I can't say that you won't gain anything from this book, but I can say that both your time and money is likely better spent elsewhere.
I suggest instead the Sybex CCNA book. I have version 4 (it is now v5), but the book seems to map to the exam pretty closely and the topics are tactfully covered.
The Sybex book + Boson CCNP Router sim should give you a pretty solid foundation for the exam.
ok.......2005-07-11
I just passed the ccna after failing once. I failed because I assumed this book had everything needed to pass the test. The areas this book lacks in that I need supplemental material for was routing protocols. Luckily a coworker of mine had the Cisco Press books. Learn up on Rip, Rip v2, IGRP, EIGRP, and OSPF, elsewhere.
Used to be good.......2005-07-03
I used to use the Exam Cram stuff all the time a few years ago and it always got me through the test. Thanks to this book, I finally failed one. There is no way there is enough detail to pass the 801 in here.
The memorization sheet they include is crap. There were maybe 8 questions between both tests I took that were on that sheet.
My example is the Advanced Routing Protocol section. The chapter in this book doesn't even cover 10% of what you need for the test. My suggestion is to look elsewhere until Exam Cram can find some better authors.
