The Sarah McLachlan Collection.......2005-01-02
Includes: (from Touch) Ben's Song* Vox (from Solace) Drawn to the Rhythm* I Will Not Forget You* Path of Thorns* Lost (from Fumbling) Possession* Wait* Plenty* Good Enough* Mary* Elsewhere* Circle* Ice* Hold On* Ice Cream* Fear* Fumbling Towards Ecstasy*
This is one amazing songbook! I have never been more impressed with a transcription of Sarah's music. There are so many songs here that I absolutely love, and I can just sit down and play them. The arrangements are great--not too hard, but not one-note, occasional chord, melodies either.
The Sarah McLachlan Collection also includes six pages devoted to full-color pictures of Sarah, which are beautiful. It also has lyric pages before each song, with captivating illustrations/photos in the background.
All over, this is so perfect. The arrangements are completely in line, the design is awesome, and there is even a guitar tab in the back, which I (embarrassedly) admit to not having checked out yet. I'm sure it's awesome, though, just like everything else in this completely wonderful songbook.
A feast for the eyes as well as the ears..............2002-04-22
In the "Sarah McLachlan Collection" songbook (vocal/piano/guitar), there are illustrations drawn by Sarah, hand-penned lyrics and a centrefold of concert photos that makes this a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. "Collection" covers Sarah's first three studio albums: Touch ("Vox," "Ben's Song,"), Solace ("Drawn To The Rhythm," "I Will Not Forget You," "Lost,") and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (the title of which was taken from Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce et Decorum est" that features the line "An ecstasy of fumbling") ("Possession," "Path of Thorns," "Wait," "Plenty," "Good Enough," "Fear," "Circle," "Ice," "Ice Cream," "Hold On," and "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy").
The arrangements are greatly simplified, especially "Possession." It should be noted that this is *NOT* the piano version of "Possession" that was a hidden track on "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" (and also featured on the "Due South" soundtrack). This transcription is from the album version, and it is very, very basic. You will want to add your own embellishments to make it workable.
However, most of the songs closely resemble their album counterparts and are a joy to play. I love the shimmery buoyancy of "Vox," the Loreena McKennitt-like musings of "Drawn To the Rhythm," and the high-strung melancholy of "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy." This is a wonderful addition to any fan's Sarah McLachlan collection.
(Note: there is a section devoted to guitar tabs for all of you guitarists out there)
Fumbling Towards Ecstacy and more!.......2002-02-21
Guitar chords & addition tab section, piano, and vocal music. Sarah's sheet music is kinda weird sometimes, but it works. All the songs look fairly easy to play (on piano), but I haven't had time to work on any from this book yet. It includes a few songs from her first 2 albums, then the entire Fumbling Towards Ecstacy album. There are also a few pages of great photos of Sarah.
Simply Wonderful!.......2000-04-01
I personally love this book. The songs are a bit simplier than the album version, but these versions are so great. My favorite to play on the piano is Mary. I really recommend this book to anyone who loves Fumbling Towards Ectasy.
i was disappointed.......2000-02-09
I really loved the CD. However, this book was not good. I expected a lot more. The songs were simplified. The song I really wanted to play, Posession, was not the piano version on the CD. I think that it is not a good book to buy if one is a serious piano player.

Ravenous Sarah McLachlan fans will be happily sated by this sophisticated cookbook-cum-fan letter. With Plenty: A Collection of Sarah McLachlan's Favourite Recipes, the Canadian musician reveals the inventive ways she copes with touring hardships: by taking refuge in Full of Grace Soufflé, Sweet Surrender Lobster, and Grandma's Upside-Down Apple Tart, to name just a few.
To make this possible, McLachlan hired a professional chef to cook for her band and crew while on tour--Jaime Laurita, trained at the Culinary Institute of America. In collaboration, McLachlan and Laurita share meat-free recipes that borrow from Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, and Japanese cookery--all heavy on veggies and fish. Organized neatly into appetizers, entrées, and desserts and beverages, these recipes are suitable for courageous novice cooks and home chefs alike. The appealing presentation includes color photographs of the exotic ingredients, such as galangal and gooseberry, and shots of creative serving suggestions.
Generous additions of material from McLachlan take this book beyond the mere cookbook classification. While waiting for the vinegar to reduce when making Penne Pasta in Balsamic Cream, Sarahphiles can indulge in photographer Kharen Hill's color and black-and-white concert shots, candid everyday photos of tour and home life, and McLachlan's own commentary on almost every luscious dish. She has this to say of Writer's Block Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies: "When trying to write songs after experiencing writer's block, one sure-fire remedy is baking cookies. It's easy and they always turn out great. I can't say it makes the songs come any easier, but it does cheer me up!" This culinary gift to fans and lovers of sophisticated food sings its own song of plenty. --Stefanie Durbin

Plenty.......2005-01-02
This is a wonderful cookbook, providing food every bit as good as Sarah McLachan's music and an extra look into Sarah's life at home. For Plenty, Sarah got together with her chef, Jaime Laurita, and made a collection of some of her favorite recipes.
Plenty is interspersed with amazing, full-color, full-page pictures of both Sarah and the recipes. Sarah did the background illustrations and commented on both the pictures and recipes.
This cookbook is actually one of the best I've ever found--its dishes range from Tzatziki to Caramel Custard, from Thai to Italian. The recipes are easy to follow, the food delicious, and the designing--pictures, words, and recipes--superb. Plenty is a delicious dish in itself--a must have.
Plenty for everyone!.......2003-01-02
this cookbook is great! for one thing, i love sarah's music, so it was interesting to see this different side of her. for another thing, the recipes really are great! there is definitely something for everyone in here, from the appetizers,to the entrees to the desserts. out of print? i think it's time to send this one back to the presses so everyone can try it!
yummy!.......2002-10-18
After eating a meal prepared by Jaime, Sarah's chef, i knew i HAD to go buy this book! He assured me that even an inexperienced cook such as myself would find it easy to follow~he was right! The food is delicious and the pictures are beautiful. Easy to follow with accessible ingredients and worth the effort of cooking at home. This is the first cookbook i've purchased in 4 years and it is well worth it.
Great selection of recipes.......2001-10-28
Even if you're not a huge Sarah McLachlan fan, I'd still recommend this book! Sarah and her tour chef have created a lovely collection of recipes that are fun to make and delicious to eat. The book itself is beautiful and that is worth the price alone!
Fine food, workable recipes.......2001-02-06
I purchased this cookbook because I cook and because there is a major Sarah McLachlan fan in my house. Okay, I like her, too. Anyway, the cook here is very happy with this book which relies on easy to prepare Mediterranean style recipes. The recipes are courtesy of the chef who catered Sarah's band on the Lilith Fair tour out of a tiny mobile kitchen. If he can do it, so can those of us with real kitchens. Many recipes are vegetarian with the occasional dairy or fish ingredient. Many are also low-fat. All are gorgeous, satisfying and should suit most tastes. I am envious of the fact that Sarah was backstage eating this great food while I was in the audience, restricted from 3 p.m. until midnight to eating what was sold "in the venue." Note to future festival organizers: some of us don't do fries, nachos with orange cheese, hotdogs and funnel cakes (I attended Lilith in central Pennsylvania). Some of us like vegetables, just like Sarah.

Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2005-02-25
Unfortunately, this book does not do justice to Sarah McLachlan's music. I love her music but this book was really disappointing. You can barely recognize any of the songs when you play from this book. In my opinion, the arrangements are very poor. Granted this is easy piano, but I have played other similar books and they sound much better. I highly recommend NOT to buy this book. As a matter of fact, I will be more than happy to send you my copy. I rated this book with two stars because of the nice cover.
The Sarah McLachlan Collection.......2004-12-03
Includes some of Sarah's songs from Touch, Solace, FTE, and Surfacing.
At times, the "easy piano" of this can get slightly irritating, but that is easily remedied by the purchase of the other Sarah McLachlan Collection, which is slightly more on the mark. However, this collection is perfect for when you want to sit down and PLAY something-you know the times: you need to relax, you're waiting for someone or something, et cetera, et cetera. These are songs you can just sit down and plink out-it's a bit of a relief.
This is definitely a Sarah collection worth getting. Just plop down on the bench, sight-read a few of her totally amazing songs, and feel good about yourself. Cheap thrills, I know, but it really does work.

Will Barnet
ASIN: 091120959X |
Book Description
"My interest has been in developing further the plastic convictions that have been evolving in my abstract paintings; so that a portrait, while remaining a portrait, becomes in this sense an abstraction: the idea of a person in its most intense and essential aspect." Will Barnet, 1962
Will Barnet (1911-), much like Chuck Close and Alex Katz, has approached painting through sustained exploration of the relationship between abstract, geometric forms and the processes of perception. In this book, which accompanied an exhibition of the same name at the Palmer Museum of Art and the Alexandre Gallery, Patrick J. McGrady examines the paintings, drawings, and prints Barnet made in the 1960s, the decade when Barnet portrayed his family and renegotiated his commitment to pure abstraction.
As McGrady traces work during this decisive period in Barnet's career, he shows how drawing became increasingly important in the evolution of such major paintings as Mother and Child, The Blue Robe, and Eden. In addition, McGrady provides a richly documented discussion of critics' responses to the profound changes in Barnet's art and Barnet's own commentary on his goals as an abstract artist.
Will Barnet illustrates many of the forty-nine works in the 2003 exhibi-tion and includes a checklist of the exhibition as well as reproductions of comparative works.
Patrick J. McGrady is Charles V. Hallman Curator at the Palmer Museum of Art and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Art History at Penn State University.

Love the book - would love to listen to the Chieftans "Song without End" - Patrick and Marty's music - if I could find it. Miss these characters on One Life to Live.

I enjoyed the book and the tape. I would hope that patrick would return but I understand that that won't happen. I wish you luck and happiness.
Telling of an immortal love...perfect for Valentine's Day........1997-02-14
Seldom, in one's all too mundane existence, does so utterly sublime a tome as Patrick's Notebook fall into the
humbly outstretched hands of the ever-optimistic reviewer.
This book is a gift from the goddess. The reviewer's patience has been magnificently rewarded.
In his own words, our own courageous, selfless, devoted, and poetical Patrick Thornhart lays bare before us his
noble soul, writing movingly of his eternal love for the bewitching but troubled Margaret Saybrooke, who became
the love of his lonely life the instant he lay his eyes, not to mention his lips, on hers.
The story of how Patrick and Margaret met on the enchanted Irish isle of Inish Crag sets the stage for the timeless
romance with which the author spellbinds his readers in these pages. Not only is this tale mesmerizing on its own
terms - a captivating story of lovers equally as captivating - but Thornhart gifts us with many lyrical poems that
reflect on his feelings for Miss Saybrooke - and that also offer a welcome opportunity for the reader to reacquaint
herself with some of the world's most senstive love poetry.
Some of the immortal poems included in Patrick's Notebook are the Shakespeare sonnet 116 ("Let me not to the
marriage of true minds admit impediments..."), A Thing of Beauty, by John Keats, How Clear She Shines, by Emily
Brontë, She Walks in Beauty, by Lord Byron, Miles From Home, by Thorsten Kaye, and Longing by Matthew
Arnold. Each of these poems, and all the others here besides, enhance Thornhart's true story of love, heartbreak,
turmoil, and determination, and his own words suffer not by comparison...
We have in Patrick Thornhart an instinctive, articulate, and irresistible writer of the first rank, and we have in
Patrick's Notebook that rare maiden effort that is destined to become a classic. Incredibly, the book comes
packaged with an audiocassette of Thornhart's own recital, in his deep, warm, velvety Celtic-tinged voice, of
several of the poems found in the book. His rendering of Sonnet 116 is especially heartfelt, and you'll hear his
ringing Mother Ocean in your dreams for many nights to come.

good vision -- bad follow-through.......2005-12-06
I'm just now finishing up a semester teaching a CS0 class from this text. In a nutshell, I am teaching the same course next term, and I will not use this book again. Let me add a few useful things for the reader before I explain why.
First, there are essentially two classes of texts out there for CS0 classes: (1) surveys of computer science qua science and (2) surveys of the information technology field. Snyder's book most definitely falls in the second category, although there are several chapters devoted to JavaScript.
Second, if you're going to use this text, make sure you get the online resources, especially the prepared labs and the 6-page PDF reference for JavaScript. The labs are detailed, deep and very useful, and the reference is well-organized and easy to use.
In fact, I did not have a chance to review this text before I adopted it for my course, and it was the labs (along with a solid-looking table of contents, credentials from the National Research Council, and a single 5-star review here) that convinced me to use it. I do hope this review will discourage others from doing the same.
My problem with this text is, in a word, depth. Or rather the breathtaking lack thereof. It is organized coherently enough, but time and time again throughout this term, I found the treatment of various topics in the book so shallow that I had to spend almost double time filling in enough details to make things coherent to my students.
The result was an absolutely enormous amount of work on my part, finding supplementary readings, putting extra care into lectures, writing extensive tutorial materials for the assignments, and so on. At every step of the way, I felt that I was fighting the text, rather than drawing from it.
Some of the worst habits in the book's writing include:
*_Long_, drawn-out analogies for ideas that are never given any other explanation, so that the "analogies" are completely devoid of context, and hence pointless. Invariably, such things serve only to muddy already-murky waters.
*Gross over-simplification of many concepts, so much so that it is nearly impossible for a student to develop any sense of the real-world ideas that made a technology worth adapting. Perhaps the most egregious example of this is in the chapter on encryption, which in its presentation of RSA pretends that only one public key (3, 55) is ever generated, and but then proceeds to give a "formula" for computing the private key, before devolving into the spectacular silliness of a quotation of Euler's Theorem that by this point might as well be in the original german for all the good it would do a student.
*Absolutely _awful_ problem sets. The few "exercises" that aren't just fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice review consist of short-answer problems that alternated between the trivial and the pointless, or combinations of the two. The "test banks" are no better. With almost no exceptions, they were questions I would consider insulting to a six-grader, let alone a classroom of college students.
The really strange thing about this is that the website for Snyder's own version of the course looks quite well organized and rigorous. In fact, the look of his class from that site was one of the reasons I selected this text. Some of this is the use of those lab assignments I mentioned above, which are quite nice. And Snyder's work with the NRC clearly indicates a fair amount of thought went into the design of this work.
The only explanation I can offer for the disconnect is that he has simply been unsuccessful in putting into writing some of the apparent magic of the course from which this text arose.
But the book does not pull it off, all my self-consciousness about armchair-quarterbacking aside. Good work with NRC report, but the book from that effort is still to be written.
broad scope across all of IT.......2005-09-23
The scope of Snyder's book is ambitious. It offers a grand sweep of teaching the basics of information technology. To a reader that will not major in this field. In other words, if this is a required text for one of your courses, then it may well be the last text in IT that some of you will ever use. Realistically, you will probably in later years have computer books, about whatever new hardware or software comes up. But those will usually be books far narrower in scope.
So there is a big responsibility here. Luckily, Snyder carries it off well. This is not a book about how to turn on your PC or Mac, or how to navigate in a windowing system. He reasonably assumes that you've already learnt this by now. This frees him to discuss higher level topics. Like just what is the World Wide Web? What are the implications of a pervasive global network of computers? Whose reach is expanding daily. Naturally, pretty early in the text, we meet the Web. An entire chapter is devoted to HTML, due to its universal importance. This chapter is fairly low level detail. Most of you won't write HTML.
Later on are perhaps broader topics. Like how to find information on the Web. This is more than just blithely typing a query into Google. He warns that there is far more to effective searching than that. You need to develop some feeling for which websites and other information sources are reliable.
If you thought HTML is low level, he goes deeper. In simple terms, he tries to explain the innards of a computer. To demystify what must surely be inexplicable to some. He also does this with algorithms.
Social issues are also extensively dealt with. The privacy you might have in an electronic world, and how this might come under attack through viruses and other malware. Or even by phishing. It is a good sign of the updated nature of this text that he gives an explanation of this recent scourge. And how you might avoid it. Though the suggestions he offers are all manual, and not programmatic. Which still exposes the unwary to phishing. But in this year 2005, that is indeed the state of the art in antiphishing.
