A Good, Easy Read.......2005-09-13
If you know someone that is having a hard time adjusting to adverse circumstances get them to read this book. I have a newly adopted son that was having a hard time adjusting to his new family situation. He is not handicapped physically or mentally but the system he was in handicapped him emotionally giving him an entitlement mentality. I read the book in one sitting and then gave it to my son to read. For the last two years I have been trying to find a way to help him see that with hard work and dedication he can become anything that he wants to be. With him being a huge football fan, this book was just the ticket to help show him that he is not the only one that has had it tough. Not only will you enjoy the message of this book, so will your family and friends that need to know someone else has beat the odds and made it, inspite of and because of their difficulties and handi-caps.
Book Description
The first comprehensive treatment of Comstock society to incorporate mining history with the stories of the people who lived it.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent history of Virginia City.......2006-01-15
I am a resident of Nevada and read a lot of history. Recently I have read a lot of books on Nevada history, and I must say this is one of the best. Thoroughly researched and footnoted, it covers almost every aspect of Virginia City history, yet is eminently readable. Some history books are too dry and dusty, and you have to plow through them (or give up), but Mr. James' book holds your interest from beginning to end. If you are interested in the history of VC, this is the one to buy!
THE must read book on the history of the Comstock.......2000-10-18
Mr. James cuts through all of the legends that have grown up around Virginia City and its fabled Comstock Lode to give us a truly outstanding and eminently readable history. He draws together primary and secondary sources, demographic analysis and archaeology to give the reader a broad, yet surprisingly detailed understanding of the Comstock from its humble beginnings, through bonanza and borrasca, and right up to the present day. Highly recommended!!
Of very good historical value.......1999-05-17
Thoroughly enjoyed reading each chapter of Mr.James' book. I would suggest it for anyone having an interest in the old West, the mining periods, and personnae of the same, and perhaps just as importantly to gain some insightful information behind the storefornt facades and adits of Virginia City. The author has provided much background behind the legends, pulled down to earth other "legends" and truly given this "tourist site" it's legitmate and historical due. I am anxious to visit the Lake Tahoe area once again and take that little jaunt over the hill to visit a now-less-mysterious Virginia City.

Understanding and using the innate music we are born with........2001-07-01
THE ROAR OF SILENCE : Healing Powers of Breath, Tone & Music. By Don G. Campbell. 134 pp. Wheaton, Ill.: The Theosophical Publishing House, 1994 (1989).
The human voice is an amazing and beautiful instrument and all of us have one. Sadly most of us are totally unaware of the power and beauty of our own God-given voice. Campbell's book remedies that ignorance. Among other things, it gives us detailed and precise instructions for toning - "the singing of prolonged sounds, usually simple vowels, on a single note" - which anyone can follow, and it takes us very deeply into the mystery that is our voice.
The book contains seven chapters followed by these progressive exercises : 1. Toning the Body; 2. Healing the Listener; 3. Exploring the Depths of Memory; 4. Awakening the Sonic Spectrum; 5. Exploring the Vibratory Centers; 6. Making Overtones; 7. The Roar of Silence.
If you follow his instructions and step-by-step exercises, you will soon be amazed to find yourself producing the most incredible and beautiful sounds. You will also find that it's huge fun, lightens your mood, clears the mind of its usual clutter, and that it can help alleviate certain minor physical problems such as headaches and perhaps even a few major ones. In short, it's great fun and makes you feel GOOD!
The main effects of toning are to balance the mind, emotions, and body, and if you persist in practice you will learn how to direct certain frequencies to different areas of the body where the sustained natural vibrations of your voice can be used to produce a wide range of beneficial effects.
This makes perfect sense because all things, ultimately, are vibration. Modern Physics and Ancient Science both concur in this. The body is a complex and delicately balanced pattern of vibrations and energy flows which can very easily become disturbed, and which need continual fine-tuning and adjustment to be kept in top condition.
I think that's what toning does for us. I also think that is why wolves howl. They don't howl, as some believe, because they are lonely or to announce someone's death. They howl to rebalance the energies in their body and to re-center themselves. In other words, they love to howl because it makes them feel GOOD!
Human beings are gifted with a much finer vocal instrument than God has seen fit to give to wolves, and Campbell is of course not asking you to howl but to tone. My advice would be to give Campbell and toning a try.
Campbell has something very important to teach us. His is one of several good books I've looked at on the subject (a related and excellent book is Jonathan Goldman's 'Healing Sounds'). And I think that if, as I did, you give it a try you'll find toning enormous fun.
Humming and singing are of course unconscious forms of re-centering, though few of us have the ability to sing well. But when it comes to producing not songs but individual notes, you'll be surprised at how well you can do and how good it makes you feel.
So if you are one of those people who think that sound is 'just sound,' you might take a look at Campbell's book. It's one of those books that help put us back in touch with ourselves, and that bring us vitally important knowledge that could greatly benefit anyone.
Your Voice & Breath Can Heal You!! Superb Powerful Book!.......1999-10-13
This is a wonderfully-written, easy-to-read book that is powerfully-inspiring and deep-reaching. As Jean Houston's foreword shares, Don Campbell helps you become aware of and attune to universal sound, and find your resonance within yourself. Don shares his "Journey into Toning" and that he had "always known there are powers in music, sound, and light that are far more potent than the arts themselves..." (pg1) Reading this book lets you share in his journey, and wondrously guides you to enlarge your own journey into a healing, loving self-exploration and sharing of your own creative expression of yourself with yourself and, with the world. He writes: "To sing is not enough. We must tap the powers that lie beneath the consciousness of the song. The song leads down to the chant, the chant leads down to the tone, the tone leads to the energy beneath the sound --- the roar of silence." (pgs75-76) I had the pleasure of working with Don around the time of this book's publication, and the transformation experienced then illumines my work still. Don lives his work and beliefs, and aids you to discover and choose to do the same. With wonderful explanations, exercises, a few illustrations, and an empowering, sharing writing style, Don Campbell helps you share and enjoy yourself through the ROAR OF SILENCE.

Global Television: An Introduction
ASIN: 0198159307 |
Book Description
Latin American Television makes English speakers aware of the dimensions, operation, and significance of the globalization of television in the Spanish-speaking world. Second only in scale to the market for English-language programming, the Spanish-language market embraces not just most nations of South and Central America but also Spain, and even the United States--the sixth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. This intercontinental space is connected physically by satellite communication, and culturally by a common language and heritage which binds it as both a `geolinguistic region' and an `imagined community' which certain media corporations, Latin American and North American, seek to exploit. A similar phenomenon with regard to Brazil and the Portuguese-speaking world is also examined, with special attention to its comparable features and points of exchange with the Spanish-speaking world. The book chronicles and analyses the development and structure of the globalization of these markets as a `Latin world'.

Even though XML is still very much a standard in motion, it is nevertheless freely available for implementation today. Professional Visual Basic 6 XML explains the basics of XML and illustrates how to use the most popular development language, Visual Basic, to drive full-featured XML applications.
This book introduces XML concepts using step-by-step code examples. Don't skip past the first part, since its descriptions of XML basics build a foundation for the rest of the book. An up-to-date snapshot of where the various pieces of the XML puzzle stand in the standardization process, and where the technology is likely to head, greatly aids the reader in understanding the discussion about schemas. For example, it's probably not a good idea to learn the syntax of the XML Schema, because the standard is still rapidly evolving.
The discussion of the Document Object Model, the programming tool for manipulating XML data structures, is excellent, with code examples that turn XML concepts into reality with useful VB utilities for controlling XML trees. As the book progresses, the reader will be directed to build an XML editor and explore distributed objects, data transformation, and much more. All of the sample application code is available from the publisher's Web site. --Stephen W. Plain

Book Description
Professional Visual Basic 6 XML teaches XML theory and application for VB programmers with no previous XML experience. Following a complete introduction to XML concepts and syntax, you'll rapidly discover where and how you can take advantage of XML in your own applications, and how to create new and innovative applications that use XML to achieve powerful results.
The open, extensible and self-describing nature of XML makes it ideal for any situation where complex data is passed from one application or tier to another, or where data needs to be stored in a custom XML format. As a VB programmer you will quickly learn how to integrate XML with VB in a distributed object architecture. This includes storing and retrieving XML from a SQL Server database using a VB front-end, implementing XML linking using a VB component, and the integration of XML and VB applications in a SOAP/BizTalk/Oasis environment. You'll learn how to write your own XML editor in VB and how to transform XML documents to and from HTML and other text formats, including MS Word.
Professional Visual Basic 6 XML is ideal for any VB programmer who wants to learn how to take advantage of XML technology and the available (free-to-use) implementations.

Wrox Press has gone out of business.......2003-10-22
According to an e-mail I recieved from Wiley, "Wrox Press Book Company was liquidated in the Spring and no longer exists. The books were sold to various companies. Wiley acquired only 34 of the over 350 books and the rights to the www.wrox.com website address. You'll find the complete list of books currently available from Wiley/Wrox Press at http://www.wrox.com/misc-pages/booklist.shtml "
This book is not on that list. That means that the publisher no longer provides support for it, and it will probably never be updated.
I bought this book because it was one of the very few books available that covers using XML in Visual Basic. Altho not the easiest book to follow, it does contain a great deal of useful information. Unfortunately, both VB and XML are changing rapidly, and the information is getting out of date fast.
By the way, don't even bother sending in the registration card that comes with this book. Wiley didn't renew the business reply permit, so the card will just bounce back in the mail.
Still a very usefull book.......2003-02-22
Although Microsoft has moved on to VB.net, many developers are still using VB6. It has become increasingly hard to find VB6 XML info on, say, MSDN, so a book like this is essential.
The code examples are clear and practical. The book manages to work well both as a how-to and a reference. If I were to nitpick, there are two things would mention. First, because of when the book was published, it does not cover the most currenrt version MSXML. However, porting the code samples to newer versions of the DLL is quite easy. Second, the book does not come with a CD. An HTML or PDF version of the book, with a searchable index, would be sweet.
Overalll, though, this is a good deal if, like so many, you are still working with VB6.
Big disappointment.......2002-05-17
I purchased this book to learn to do DOM programming, not to use the code provided by the authors. I was hoping for clear examples, instead I got a book that expects me to download their sample code or type it all in (and there is ALOT) in order to easily follow the samples. Typically this would be fine, but a majority of the functions and classes you can download are poorly explained, or not explained at all. This book is more like instructions on how to use a lot of code written by the authors to manipulate XML.
I own two other WROX books, these book were easy to follow and gave just the right amount of code to get me going. This book does neither. Big disappointment.
Hard to follow because poorly written.......2001-08-21
The following is a sentence from page 131 paragraph 1 of this book: "After declaring a generic Node object to serve as the parent node for the new node, and a variable to hold our function response, which we optimistically set to True - which will be changed if our attempt at adding the node fails, we check to see if the node index is within bounds, using IsNodeIndexOK, described just after this function."
The logical flow to the entire book in not much better.
This makes learning anything about XML and VB difficult. I have spent more time attempting to determine what the authors are tring to say than I have learning about XML.
I was able to work with the sample code to some extent. But even the sample code was incomplete and more difficult to follow than necessary.
With a complete rewrite this could possibly be a good book.
Long on Techno Speak, Poor Examples.......2001-07-06
This is has been a disappointment for me. I purchased this book because of a project I am working on. It told me everything I already know and gave terribly laid out examples.
I was never quite sure working through the examples if the code was required or if the Authors were merely showing us what they could do with XML/VB.

Internet Programming With VB
ASIN: 186100222X |
Amazon.com
Visual Basic 6 is ready to take on the Internet with a variety of options for Web development, both on the server and client side. That's the argument of Professional VB6 Web Programming, a wide-ranging tour of the strengths of VB for Internet development on the Microsoft DNA platform. This book provides essential information for intermediate to advanced VB developers who want to make the shift to the Internet/intranet development using their favorite tool.
Professional VB6 Web Programming provides in-depth coverage of an entire spectrum of options for VB development on the Web. For instance, it contains a guide to using Visual Basic to create business objects used with Visual InterDev and the ASP for delivering Web pages on the fly. (When used with MTS, this approach greatly improves scalability within the ASP model.)
While there are a number of books on VB business objects, this one is unique when it turns to using WebClasses for creating ASP-based applications from within VB. (The author's example here--a soup-to-nuts tour of a message board application created with Web classes--is itself probably worth the price of the book.)
Another potential standout, which most developers probably don't think about, is using VB to process CGI scripts. (The authors write a custom class to manage stream I/O, usually missing from VB, to pull this off. They also show how to use regular expressions from within VB.)
Throughout Professional VB6 Web Programming, the team of authors cover virtually every new and emerging technology, such as XML, RDS, and CDONTS (for messaging), but they also manage to cover essential VB Web development techniques in depth. In all, this book shows that VB is ready to take on Web development, including cross-browser solutions. It's all you need to take your existing VB skills to the next level for today's Web. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Internet and Microsoft DNA overview, HTTP and HTML, Visual Basic Web support, WebClasses: intro and advanced features, DHMTL, ActiveX Documents, ASP applications, VBScript, JavaScript, XML, ActiveX Control Pad, custom ActiveX controls, WebBrowser clients, ExecWB commands, VB server-side components, ADO, RDS, MTS, MSMQ, CDONTS and mail messages, CGI and VB.
Book Description
This book looks at the special demands of web programming, as well as its flexibility, and will introduce you to DNA - Microsoft's web development structure. Programming the browser through a variety of techniques - DHTML, scripting and VB components is discussed. Then how you can use VB to incorporate and customize browsers in your traditional VB applications is covered using MTS and MSMQ. From here, combining ASP and VB to produce dynamic web pages and sophisticated business logic processing for your website is discussed . Once the data has been collected, retrieving data through SQL Server and ADO is covered. Finally data transfer across the web with XML and the new web programming mechanism, Web Classes are introduced.
Customer Reviews:
Book was very useful to me professionally. But not perfect........2002-06-15
I rated this 5 stars because it has the most useful writeup on writing Server Components in VB for use with ASP - chapters 9-11. I wanted to do this and had trouble getting working samples and explanations. I feel that industrial strength ASP is very ugly and unweildy if you don't encapsulate the code into components. MSDN has lots of reference material about this but little, if any, useful "how to" stuff that i could find.
This book showed me how to do exactly what i wanted to do.
Other than that, it is a good introduction into a good number of web concepts, old and new. The first 3 chapters were a good overview of Microsoft web concepts and techniques. The writeup on web classes, if you like them, is good. I really liked the CGI case study including how to implement standard input/output via the win32 API.
The relatively free use of various win32 API functions in VB help overcome a general fear of mixing VB and CC++ functionality.
The book was a bit large but was well organized. In general it gave me a much higher opinion of Wrox books.
Very SQL serve-centric.......2001-08-13
If you are just starting to use ASP and have access to a MS SQL server, then this is a good read. However, don't even consider it if you have any previous APS experience or don't have access to a SQL server. In fact, there is no mention of MS Access in the entire book! It is pratically usesless as a reference for ASP and just sits and gathers dust.
Total junk.......2001-06-12
There seems to be a pattern with the books from Wrox. If there is more than one author on the cover, it usually stinks. This book is no exception. They try to cover too much, and end up leaving you mad because you actually spent money on something this bad. This book is nothing more than a door stop!
Not well clearlly writen - too many authors.......2000-08-01
I have 4 years VB programming experience, but after read 7 chapters of this book, I'm still feel confusing. Everything are talked a little bit, but nothing is discussed in detail.
Each chapter is not well connected, this not like a book but like a huge magazine with a bunch of articles -- too many authers can mess up a good name book. They seems never talk to each other before and after writing this book. for examble, in beginning of chapter 9, it says: "By now you have learned how Active Server Page (ASP) use components. In the next two chapters, we will focus on ... (something base on use components)" -- False! I never learned, at least in this book!
In chapter 6 -- DHTML Application. The example application is only working in VB IDE even after making the package. It's either the author's problem or Microsoft's problem.
As a "Professional VB Web programming book", it neither explains how to deploy a Web application well in general, nor teach you programming in detail.
This book turns me to other ASP books.
