Interesting stuff to develop over a long time.......2006-02-24
Great book. Very interesting stuff that you've heard Simon Phillips, Vinnie Collaiuta, and the like do forever. this takes the "mystery" out of some elusive concepts and gives you a systematic way to develop the tools. It's kind of like the Chaffee material in that it is very well laid out, systematized, and organized to go through all (or most) of the permutations. Especially great if you're disciplined enough to go through it a little bit at a time b/c it's not easy stuff. It can give you a bit of a headache. Once the concepts, feel of the displacements and modulations, and application of the material within a musical context are together, you're going to impress a lot of people.
IT'S ALL AN ILLUSION !.......2000-06-11
WOW! Now here is a Great book, I've often been Puzzled by some of the Rhythms I've heard in either Modern Music or some of the Jazz or Fusion Music I've been listening to and I've not been able to figure them out, But finaly here is a book that Explaines much of it, and it's funny that some of these Illusions are quite simple actualy, that is in theory, But in practise they can be very difficult, at least some of them.
This Book is for the drumset, I don't play the drumset but bought it anyway because these Rhythm concept can be applied to any instrument.
The Book deals with many Rhythm concept like Beat displacement, Modulation, Rhythmic scales and Polyrhythm, ther's a lot of Material here and I must agree with Bill Bruford in his Foreword to the book "I've got Work to Do".
Other good books that deal with some of these things are "Rhythm and Meter Patterns By Gary Chaffee" and "Polyrhythms by Peter Magadini".
Great drum book.......2000-04-28
This book showed me so much about what can be done on the drums. It explains things that one might never think of or might have ideas about but never be bale to put them on paper. Also comes with a brilliant CD that will make your head spin!
Book Description
Japanese schoolgirl fashions and subcultures have sprung up, burned out, mutated, and evolved into a pop culture phenomenon gone global from Gwen Stefani's "Harajuku Girls" to Gothic Lolita-fueled manga and the deadly schoolgirl in Kill Bill, it's no wonder that international fashion designers look to the streets of Tokyo for fresh inspiration. This playful and thoroughly researched handbook examines the key styles and subcultures past and present: sailor-suited gangsters, Pippi Longstockings risen from the dead, girls in blackface, teens sporting giant hamster costumes, and more. Each fashion profile is packed with photos and illustrations, history, ideal boyfriends, and must-have items. Also included are a gatefold evolutionary fashion chart, resources, and makeup tips. At last, an in-depth guide to what the girls are wearing and why on earth they're wearing it.

The most entertaining book about the subject (that isn't in Japanese) .......2007-09-03
Although I'm not an English native speaker (I speak Spanish), I could understand almost everything, and since it has many pictures and drawings, it's very amusing to read. I'm very into japanese fashion now and this book helped me know more about it, it's very informative (I didn't know anything about Takenokozoku, Sukeban nor Nagomu gals...I barely knew about Lolita and Manba, which I used to mix up with Gonguro.)
I just wish this book contained more information about lolita fashion in general, not only gothic lolita. Anyway, I really recommend this book, five stars!
Hilarious, yet informative........2007-09-02
Filled with photos, interviews, etc. It's very informative and gives you the facts, but also adds some humor to it.
Highly recommended ! .......2007-08-25
This was such a fun read, I couldn't put it down.
Anybody who has any interest in Japanese subcultures would be doing themselves a major disservice in not owning this book. ^_^
Fun, but for kids.......2007-08-12
I really enjoyed flipping through this and it would make a great gift, but keep in mind it really reads like a teen a vogue and is really intended for ages 12-17.
Fun, informative book.......2007-08-12
Japan is home to anime, sushi, samurai, and girls wearing giant hamster suits? Yes, it's bizarre, but true. Kigurumin (girls who wear cheap cloth costumes of characters like Hamtaro, Pikachu, and Winnie the Pooh) are only one of a dozen fashion subcultures that Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno features. From ogals, who rarely bathe, to gothlolis, who manage to be both cute and creepy at the same time, to lady's, who were the "biker chicks" of Japan, Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno covers them all.
The book is broken into sections, each covering a specific fashion or subculture. Each section contains a history of the fashion, fashion profiles, must-have items, and ideal boyfriends. The book also contains make-up tips, interviews, a look at the evolution of the Japanese school uniforms, and a fun little test where you are sorted into a fashion subculture.
As some of the other reviewers have said, the binding is not the best. The book is only available in paperback, unfortunately. I would recommend handling the book with caution, and not leaving it face down on any tables (that's a surefire way to destroy paperback books).
Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno is a must-have for anyone interested in fashion or Japanese culture, especially fans of manga and anime. Of course, the handbook can also be enjoyed by people who know nothing about either fashion or Japanese culture; after all, who can keep a straight face while reading about "fashionable" girls wearing giant hamster costumes?

Fine scholarship, but a poorly made book.......2004-11-03
Michael Ashkenazi's Handbook of Japanese Mythology is a fine work of scholarship. Classical and modern myths of the Japanese people are presented comprehensively and with evident care. Associated references are listed at the end of articles where appropriate, and suggested reading notations are often appended. The index and bibliography are generous and well presented. Overall the book is a wonderful addition to any library of Japanese studies.
However, I must point out that the quality of the paper, binding and illustrations is POOR. For a book that sells for more than twenty cents per page of text, the quality of the materials is an insult to the purchaser. This book deserves a new edition on fine paper, with a fine binding, and with the illustrations presented as they deserve to be. It is a shame to see such a fine work of scholarship treated so badly by it's publisher.

Book Description
The Handbook of Japanese Popular Culture provides a convenient and efficient guide to the prevalent ways of life, recreations, and artistic creations of contemporary Japan. Designed for the general reader as well as the specialist in Japanese culture. The areas explored are those that have proven to be of durable interest to the Japanese, such as sports, science fiction, and popular music, as well as passing fads and fancies. The extremely readable essays, contributed by specialists in the field, provide a wealth of interesting information, including a survey of the historical development of the topic under discussion, with special attention paid to the most useful published works in the field, followed by a guide to the research collections and reference works that should be consulted by those wishing to deepen their knowledge of the subject. Exploring the most salient aspects of Japanese popular culture, the chapters include such topics as popular architecture, new religions, popular performing arts, film, television, comics, and mystery literature. The editor's introduction suggests that the study of popular culture as a discipline with its own unique subject matter and methodology represents a form of protest against the concept of culture as a selective tradition consisting of the best that has been thought and said. This comprehensive survey of Japanese popular culture will be an essential additon to all libraries and a useful resource in the study of popular culture, sociology, Japanese history and culture, humanities, communications, and journalism.

Customer Reviews:
If you liked ASIAN CULT CINEMA (which I did), then..............2002-03-13
Being fairly uninformed about Japanese cinema (the vast cultural differences often make me shy away from it), I did not notice the errors (aside from the occasional typo) mentioned by other reviewers. Nor did I detect any racism or misogyny, as alleged by others.
This review guide, along with the critically-maligned ASIAN CULT CINEMA, also by Weisser, is just plain fun reading. It introduces the reader to many heretofore unheard-of films. The reviews are spirited, and the ever-popular 4-star rating system augments them. Whether one agrees with the stated opinions or not is of course entirely personal.
I must say though: Shame on the author for giving the masterpiece WOMAN IN THE DUNES (1964) only 3 and 1/2 stars.
Completist, but a little shallow.......1999-12-24
For an introduction to the odder end of Japanese cinema this is pretty good. There are a lot of films covered, though the descriptions are somewhat sparse, and in certain cases downright misleading (ie 'Bounce Ko Gals' is described as "a respectable sex film"). Also a lot of typos and internal consistencies, and some startling omissions ('Kamikaze Taxi' and 'Tokyo Decadence' for exammple). This seems to be more of a catalogue for Weisser's own semi-legi 'Video Search of Miami' business. Also, it misses out on a lot of films which are covered in his other books, but once you've got one of these books, you're not going to want them all. The writing style is somewhat 'head-in-the-trough' and sensationalist. Similarly it is poorly laid out, though if all this sounds a little negative, it is the only conclusive coverage of Japanese cinema at its price range.
From The Author Of Asian Cult Cinema.......1999-08-28
Althogh the author professes to be a lover of this kind of moviemaking, there are racist undertones. He continually makes fun of Asian men in his books and reduces the women to the level of objects. Also, you have to wonder about a man who has actually WATCHED most of those movies....
Although it's not perfect - definitive a "MUST HAVE".......1999-02-09
Great enziclopedia for the movie-interested Japanophiles - but Tom has a strange taste and also his translations of the titles and of the directors are a bit funny!( but... you find nearly every film you 're looking for !) Never mind - definitive a MUST HAVE !
'Survey' would be a better title, sometimes inaccurate........1999-01-02
There is _alot_ in this book that can (and will!) captivate you about Japanese cinema. While the Weissers, like most critics dwell a lot on their personal favorites, the bulk of the book is left with brief 2 and 3- paragraph summaries I found all too brief for the movie(s) in question.
Occasionally I also ran into outright errors.
Here's one of those that I would not expect in a 4th edition. Example: Entry for NIGHTHEAD: Actor Toyokawa Etsushi's name is misspelled, the summary and analysis are _totally_ wrong. NIGHTHEAD: The Trial was a sequel/conclusion to the TV series, NOT re-edited snippets as they say in the review. The brothers are NOT therapists, they are working with the research group that trained them and fighting a corporation that wants to enslave psychics, the girl is not retarded, et cetera). I would have to say that 10% of the book contains these 'drive by' reviews that have very little to do with the movie in question, or that contain significant translation/spelling errors. I have to wonder if this book really is a 4th edition, or if it is the fourth time that it went to press....
Second beef: If you pick up this book, and then obtain one of the Weissers' 'Japanese Cinema Encyclopedias,' be prepared for redundancy. Basically, the movie reviews found in _Essential_ copied and pasted verbatim. (I found this to be true in the JCE of Horror, Fantasy, and SF).
Errors (when present) and all.
To be fair though this book does cover a lot of ground, and for those of us who are either first timers or old hands, it is great for introducing movies that would perhaps remain unseen to the general (non-Japanese-speaking) public. However, in my humble opinion the title should have been 'A Survey of Japanese Cinema.' For the sheer volume of movies surveyed, this book is (probably) unique, and worth a look.
Book Description
Providing compelling insight into each thrilling episode of the acclaimed Fox television show 24, this book reveals all the plot twists and turns of the show's fast-paced second season in which FBI agent Jack Bauer leads the investigation to determine how and why L.A. has been targeted and bombed by a group of terrorists. A detailed profile of each character and actor is provided along with an in-depth discussion of the show's production. Production trivia is included, such as numbers from incoming calls on Jack's mobile phone, and loose plot lines from the first season are explained.
Book Description
Right now terrorists are planning to assassinate a presidential candidate. My wife and daughter have been kidnapped. And the people I work with may be involved in both. I'm Federal Agent Jack Bauer. And this is the longest day of my life." Have you ever had one of those days...? 24 has been nothing short of a television industry phenomena on both sides of the Atlantic. We've never seen anything quite like this before. A series told in 24 episodes, and in real-time. It spans one day in the life of a US Federal Agent attempting to stop a determined and complex cabal of terrorists from assassinating a presidential candidate. At the same time, he must try to find, and free, his kidnapped wife and daughter. This, then, is A Day in the Life. Of Jack Bauer, that is. Bauer, as played stoically, though with occasional moments of ultraviolence, by the magnificent Kiefer Sutherland, is the key to 24's ultimate success. An everyman-yet-superman flawed hero, facing insurmountable odds and determined and well-resourced foes. Someone with only his wits, his integrity, his plethora of Bondian gadgets and his abilities as a one-man killing machine to keep him going. 24 has literally everything that a perfect modernist thriller should. Conspiracy theory, political intrigue, dysfunctional family values, occasional flashes of very black humour, fashionable Los Angeles locations and testosterone coming out of its nostrils. 24is extraordinary, dangerous, high-octane, sexy television, cleverly put together to maximise the breathlessly clock-watching structure of its format. It's Die Hard meets James Bond meets JFK. It features elements from everybody's favourite TV shows and movies of the last couple of decades and more twists and turns than a day at the Grand Prix. To say that 24 had its audience on the edge of its seat for over six months is, for once, not a case of TV-industry hyperbole.

A Welcome Second "Guide To 24" Title.......2003-06-06
This book is more of a traditional episode guide (it's about Season One) than "24: The House Special Subcommittee's Findings at CTU" was, but very well done. It's comprehensive, with excellent nitpicky observations and inconsistencies offered without overdoing the snark, and lots of fun facts as well. The author's obvious enjoyment of the show and periodic bursts of British phraseology were both easily digested and much appreciated. I'd consider it a must-have for those "24" fans whose fascination with Season One remains.

Book Description
This book follows each episode in the first season of the acclaimed Fox television show 24, which stars Kiefer Sutherland as FBI Agent Jack Bauer. The action, plot twists, and surprises in each show are described, and a detailed profile of each character is provided. Discussion is included on the potential flaws, unanswered questions, and various loose ends that resulted after the show's first season. A special trivia section details such facts as Bauer's mobile phone number and his daughter's birthday.
Customer Reviews:
Slightly flawed but soild guide to 24's first season.......2003-07-15
Although this book doesn't have much to say about the making of 24 or what happens behind the scenes, it is a very good summary of the plot and events of the fantastic first season of 24. Each day is covered in detail, and the book raises good points and questions about the show. It asks reasonable things about possible plot holes without becoming too whiny, and it's clear that the writer actually enjoys the show himself. This book isn't essiential to a 24 fan, but it's definitely a good read.

Designing Active Server Pages provides an important tool for often-overworked ASP programmers: a set of techniques for making the wisest use of the technology in a production environment. Targeting an audience of readers who already are seasoned in ASP, author Scott Mitchell explores techniques for producing "reusable and robust ASP applications."
Presentation and example compose the approach here, with concise tables of information and descriptions that make the book a fast read. Mitchell explores the benefits of the VBScript 5.0 scripting engine, and illustrates how to exploit the new RegExp object fully and build object-oriented code by using VBScript classes--another welcome addition to the coding platform. ASP programmers will find techniques for which they've been longing, such as centralized error-handling pages and reusable database administration forms.
Creation of and best practices for implementing COM components, useful standard components (like the Content Linker and AdRotator), and third-party components (such as ASPEncrypt and SA-FileUp) are discussed. Designing Active Server Pages doesn't stop with mere descriptions of these components, but also provides solutions for common needs, such as uploading files to binary fields in Microsoft SQL Server and sending encrypted e-mail.
With its advanced techniques and practical perspective, this book is perfect for those who look to stay on the cutting edge of ASP programming. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered:
- Choosing a server-side scripting language
- Exception handling
- Regular expressions
- Building reusable forms
- Reusable database administration pages
- COM overview
- Lesser-known Microsoft COM components
- Important third-party COM components
Book Description
Developers of Active Server Pages often reinvent the wheel. Their background in web design, with its separate HTML page for each viewable web page on a site, leads many ASP developers to create a distinct ASP page each time they think they need one. Often times, these pages are functionally similar. With intelligent planning, an ASP developer stands to save a great deal of time by creating reusable ASP pages. Designing Active Server Pages is tailor-made for these developers. There is currently a plethora of Active Server Pages books. However, the vast majority of these books are either technical references or how-to books for beginners. Designing Active Server Pages is written for the intermediate to advanced user. Furthermore, nearly every other book on ASP focuses on using VBScript, even though ASP supports an array of scripting languages, including JScript and PerlScript. Designing Active Server Pages shows how to start using these other languages. The latest version of the scripting engines (Version 5.1 for VBScript) adds new features not available before the 5.0 release. These features include class support for VBScript, and Regular Expression searching through the use of a COM object. Designing Active Server Pages explains why using classes in VBScript is beneficial, and demonstrates the power of regular expression searching. This book shows how to simplify the process by only requiring one ASP page to handle ALL of the Forms throughout a web site, thus reducing the amount of code one has to write. Topics include:
- Using various Microsoft and third-party components to enhance ASP pages
- Creating components using VB and/or VC++
- Sample code for performing routine ASP tasks
- Techniques to allow for reusable database scripts on the database system and on ASP pages
- How to obtain and register third-party components, thus saving massive amounts of time by reusing someone else's code
Designing Active Server Pages is for developers who have already mastered the basics of ASP application development and are ready to take the next logical step. It is sure to become an indispensable part of every web developer's library.

Excellent Book.......2005-05-17
This book is very helpful if you want to learn advanced ASP programming techniques. After I bought a basic ASP programming book with discount through couponsky.com, I also bought this book. I found this book teach reader a lot of ASP programming tricks. It is very useful if you want to learn some advanced ASP techniques. I recommend this book to people who already has some basic ASP knowledge.
Disappointing.......2004-01-04
I am sorry. In my opinion this book is a waste of paper. I have
tried to find some answers to simple questions
about ASP in this book. Things concerning little
things one might forget and you want to look up.
After a few times using the book in this way it's clear this book tells us little useful things. Even free (digital/psd) manuals on ASP are a lot more useful. After
buying this book from amazon it went quite quickly to a dump shop, sorry...
Excellent Book.......2002-12-10
Scott Mitchell is an excellent author. I love his articeles on 4GuysFromRolla.com. I am freelance internet consultant and have used most of the examples in this book in one form or another.
Highly recommended for up and coming "Advanced" ASP developers.
Excellent work, but please organize the sample code.......2002-07-10
This VERY young author has done something seasoned technical writers twice his age have not often done: written an extremely useful, information and well thought out book, with plenty of implementable examples, and all in a book of less than 350 pages. It so often seems that these kinds of books suffer from "mission creep", and hence bloat into the 1500-page monsters we so often see. Because he was able to keep the scope of his task clearly in mind, he also provides a thorough "Further Reading" section at the end of each chapter, where he provides links to a number of on-line articles. (Yes, you could find these yourself, but how great that a professional in the field has taken the time to find them seek them out for you -- and I was glad all that extra stuff wasn't in the book itself.)
The one complaint I have is that the source code for this book, which you can download from the O'Reilly site, is a chaotic, inextricable mess of files with arbitrary names that are impossible to link to any specific examples in the book (I wouldn't mind that the file names are arbitrary, if he told you in the book which file a given example was associated with -- but no luck there). Really inexcusable.
Program Design for ASP.......2002-02-24
I have around 20 titles in my personal library which focus directly or indirectly on ASP. This is simply the best. It isn't an introduction to the language -- there are several good ones for that -- it is more about using sound program design methodology to accomplish some of the more complex tasks facing ASP programmers, such as content management systems, reusable forms, and eCommerce.
If you have any programming experience in other languages and are moving to ASP, get this book. If you are just learning what an Active Server Page is, then it is not for you, but if you plan to do anything more than fairly simple pages in ASP, get it, even if you don't think you're ready for advanced stuff.
Scott gives good examples, clear explanations, and lays out methodology that will help you no matter what your level of experience. It's one of the best bargains out there in technical books.

Misleading book title.......2006-03-29
this book isn't that bad as describe by the others readers who rated 1 star. In fact, it is elaborate some of the in-depth concept pretty well. unfortunately, this book doesn't surve the purpose of designing a real world applications. it's merely teach very fundamental of Asp.Net and doesn't really teach how to design an efficient and scalable asp.net application. I would rate more star if the title is Asp.Net in a nutshell
Poorly written.......2005-09-26
I got a used one so don't feel that bad. The explanation and the code samples are very poor. I would not recommend buying this one.
Just didn't like it........2004-11-24
I read this book just after reading a really good C# book. This one paled in comparison. The writing is weak and hard to follow. I only made it about half way before I got bored and moved on.
Absolutely Awful.......2004-03-29
If you're thinking about buying this book, don't. Go with a reputable publisher who puts out quality work like O'Reilly or Wrox. This book is a piece of trash. The only "interesting perspective" it provides is the nearly half of the book that is dedicated to praising what a wonderous achievement the .NET platform is. The author just can't get enough of telling people who already bought the book that .NET is better than Java and actually is an original idea. Well, he does a lot of this and very little of teaching the language. There are very few examples, and those that are there aren't useful at all. The index is also terrible, making this book also worthless as a reference book. I really can't find any redeeming qualities about this book except that it's printed on fairly high quality paper. Far better than it deserves. If you're completely new to this, it might be useful as an introduction, but there are better books for that as well.
