Beware: This is NOT a "Ray Charles" Collection!.......2006-01-05
This book is, mostly, a collection of the original sheet music of songs Ray Charles performed and recorded. In other words, they are the original versions, NOT the versions that Ray recorded. For example, "Georgia On My Mind" is the original Hoagie Carmichael version from 1930, NOT the ultra-smooth version Brother Ray so cooly laid down. Some of the sheets are useable, like "Crying Time," and "Born to Lose," but almost all are NOT the Ray Charles version. You have been warned!

i'm glad i brought this wonderful addition to the movie. it's a wonderful collectors item. the picture were fabulous and the essays Taylor Hackford, Jamie Foxx and others were wonderful. this movie is a labor of pure love for the legend who will live in all of us who love him. i would like to take time out and thank Taylor Hackford for bring us this beautiful gift of a movie and to Jamie Foxx (i have a crush on you!) for bringing the spirit of Ray Charles to life once again. you guys are fabulous and be proud of what you did because i'm sure am. i love to look at this beautiful book. it's a wonderful coffee table book (it even goes with the decor in my livingroom! ;-) )

A lot of information but too many inaccuracies.......2007-09-03
When I first read this book, I thought it was a well researched biography. Not so. After interviewing several members of Ray Charles' band, including Leroy "Hog" Cooper, David "Fathead" Newman, Ernest Vantrease, Don Peake and Marcus Belgrave, I learned that Michael Lydon did not do sufficient fact checking. The generalities in the book paint the big picture, but the 'devil is in the details' and that's where Lydon goes wrong. After hearing the stories from the musicians, I was disappointed to find that he had not done his homework. Finding out that pieces of the book are not accurate makes me wonder about the rest. I wasn't crazy about "Brother Ray," the cursory memoir of the man who lived such an extraordinary life, but in retrospect, that book is at least closer to the truth, and 'guilt by omission' is a better way to define my disappointment with it.

Can't say enuff 'bout this. There's only 25 to 28 chapters in this book. Blessed I got it on Alibris. This shows the real side of Ray Charles (Robinson) where he's going thru since after the success of his first penned book w/ writer David Ritz (I can't stand the hatred and dissappointment behind this man, ya'll should give him credit instead of not loving him or have a distaste), just finished reading "Brother Ray" and plus the movie "Ray" among certain albums, documentaries and other taped concerts around, this Man deserves it, no matter if u love him or not, he's still bad. Nobody can't take that away from him perhaps touch him. Blessed that his music, voice and legacy will never be forgotten just b/c I was shocked about the news about his death. RIP to a well-known giant in Music who alot of Creativity, Sense, Class, Respect, Love, Pride & Dignity. Long Lives the Genius of Soul, Father of Soul, Right Reverend, High Priest, Righteous Ray (or Reverend Righteous Ray), Reverend Ray, Brother Ray, etc.
Ray Charles Robinson aka Uncle Ray, thank u for all your courage, your time and your hard work between your music, your life, your legacy, your everything. Thank you for a tremendous legacy that'll live on for years to come (1930-2004).

I have never been a Ray Charles fan,and when the movie Ray came
out,I was sadden,that I had missed a great talent.I brought the
DVD version of the movie,and then started reading everything there was about the man. After reading this book,which I enjoyed
I found that I did not like the man. I think that the writer of
the book,told about Ray,being cheap,being a womanizer and the
way he treated people in general.I think that the movie version of his life,glossed and sugar coated his life,his career and his
marriage.I came away feeling very sorry for his wife and his children,as it appears they were truly the victims of Ray Charles
I,for one will not spend any more money on the Ray Charles legend.
Ray: The Music Not the Man.......2005-01-11
I wouldn't say that this is a bad book. It has its good points, but it was missing some of the things that I was more interested in. Like the thoughts of Ray, and the things that went on behind the scenes, through out different occurences in his life. Like when the woman on the side would get pregnant, what type of issues were bought into the Robinson household. The book didn't go into detail with anything. Basically, it just made a statement, "Ray girlfriend has a baby." That's it. That is the debt that was given, in most of the stories. Even during Ray's drug use years, it really didn't give to much insite. I think that the movie gave more detail than this book did, and usually it is the opposite. I think that this book could have eliminated about of 100 of it pages. I found myself, flipping pages trying to get through dead information, like its countless mention of billboard reviews, giving more detail in music charts, than the actual life of "RC." Let me restate that the book does haved it's good points, but it didn't fulfill my need for information.

Suberb, comprehensive and well-written.......2003-09-26
Now, let me disclaim that I am not a big fan of thin books claiming to be "comprehensive". In fact, I was deeply suspicious while getting this "Hacknotes" thing. Was I up for a pleasant surprise!! This book does deliver what it promises. It walks a fine line of being both wide and deep, which I am still amazed about. From risk assessment methodologies to "find / -perm 0400" in just 200 pages is no small feat.
I liked that the book and the entire series have a clearly stated goal, and readers can judge for themselves how well it delivered and there is no confusion as to "what should be there". The book is incredibly useful within those stated goals. Obviously, the book is not optimal for actually learning those methods and technologies, but it is an awesome reference in case you forget a thing or two or want to get an overview of a subject within network security. Unfortunately, the book will also benefit "script kiddies" by helping them to "hack without knowing how".
This includes high-level security principles, risk assessment (covering assets, threats and risks), hacking methodology (same as in "hacking Exposed") with details on all the attack stages (Discover, Scan, Enum, Exploit - split along the platform lines, Escalate, etc), wireless security, incident response (identification and recovery), pen testing and hardening. Amazing, but that is not all. It also covers web application security, social engineering, software flaws overview, war dialing and PBX hacking. Of course, all of the above is covered briefly, but thoroughly. Tools are mentioned where needed, and there is no excessive "tool obsession".
Yet another great component is several checklists. Those are used for incident response, security assessment and system hardening (Win, UNIX with some tips on specific servers - FTP, WWW, DNS, Mail etc). Additionally, the book has even more condensed part, "a reference center" with some handy commands from the worlds of DOS, Windows and UNIX/Linux. I liked a nice "important ports" overview.
Overall, unless you are just starting in infosec, get the book and it will come handy more often that you'd think.

One of the best Unix/Linux security books I own.......2004-01-15
I own a lot of security books and I try to keep up with what his happening. After reading a few reviews I had been wanting to buy this book until I attended a conference where the author was singing books. So I got my signed copy and I have to say I am pretty impressed with the material. As other people have mentioned here, the author's attitude is to get right to the point and to provide useful examples wherever possible. Part 1 seems to be the where most of the material for this book exists, specially chapter 4 "Remote Hacking". I was pleasantly surprised to read the end of chapter 4 where the author describes how to use my favourite Unix tool Zebedee to do remote port forwarding! I had used this tool to do many things but I wasnt aware how it could be used to perform port forwarding tricks. Hacking tips are arranged in the order of ports and so it is easy to look up vulnerabilities. The entire book is very well arranged . If there is ever a 2nd edition to this book, I will buy it.

Got this book after I read a recent review. I found this book to contain some pretty cool attack & penetration techniques. Chapters like the one on NASL and the Zaurus PDA hacking are a nice addition.
Since this is a hacking book, I disagree with the one review on here that complained about it not being complete. As far as the a&p techniques go, this book packs in more info than most 400+ hacking books I own. Saves a lot of desk real estate and also time. I really dont want to read 5 pages telling me what a portscan is, just tell me how to do it. I prefer it over the Hacking Exposed Linux book when I need quick and precise answers. This book helps me with just this. Right to the point, and some very cool techniques!

Too short, too many ommisions.......2003-10-14
While I understand the publisher's goal is to have some shorter, more consise hacking/cracking/security books, at least this book in the series has problems fulfilling that promise. I'd strongly recomend sticking with their Hacking Linux Exposed, Second Edition title, which is much more complete. HN:LUSPR is not portable (it's still 200 some pages) contrary to the title, so what's the point in something that doesn't take time to delve into security in enough depth? Reading just this book will leave huge holes in your security posture.

My favourite section of the book is 'Remote Hacking'which is a good 50 pages long. What I liked about this chapter is that it shows exactly howto use security tools to break into unix and linux servers. The other sections are interesting also. I highly recommend this book.
Short and right to the point.......2003-07-24
There are quite a few secucity related books out there nowdays. But most of them is just way too thick for me, to make matters worse those books are often filled with repeated or unwanted information. However, this book is different; it cuts right to the point and present me just the right amount of information that I wanted to know. At the same time, it is thin enough so I can carry it around with me.
As a unix sysadmin I think this is one of those books that should go right next to the "Unix System Administration Handbook" on bookshelfs.
This is a must have book for people who cares or want to know more about security.

Good information meets a Foundstone commercial.......2003-10-16
Since I am also an I/T Security Consultant, I decided to pick up this book as a good reference or to learn a few tips that I might not have known.
The good:
I'm about halfway through it and there is plenty of great information in it. If you have a good working knowledge of IP networks and (to a lesser degree) associated protocols like DNS, SMTP, HTTP, etc... This will serve as a great reference. It's also good for newer types who want to learn from a very concise author. It approaches a lot of topics from an attack-defend perspective, demonstrating what you would want to accomplish as a hacker vs. what you would want to accomplish as a security conscious sysadmin.
The bad:
It reads like it was published by a combination of Foundstone's marketing department, the author's personal marketing department, and the technical auditor's personal marketing department. Basically every suggestion they have for a tool will benefit one of them with only minor mentions of some of the industry leading applications. I can't really blame them, but I wouldn't suggest taking their tool suggestions directly to heart without doing a little digging on your own.
Concise, relevant, and feature-rich........2003-10-14
With HackNotes(tm) Windows Security, Michael O'Dea has certainly contributed an essential read for those with any exposure to the Windows OS, from the home user to the seasoned network administrator. In clear, easy to follow steps with accompanying screenshots and exact command syntax, the reader is presented first with fundamental concepts and graduates into advanced topics such as "IP Security Policies" and "Active Directory domains".
In this concise and relevant reference book, he offers a refreshing change from the expected tradition of overwhelming the reader with unabridged bibles, if you will, which seem to remain for the most part unread expect for the occasional glance. In just a mere 6" x 1/2" x 9" worth of material (which certainly reads as if its equivalent weight of knowledge is twice that), this is an enjoyable read from cover to cover. Also, in its well organized format with its visual cues and hierarchical headers, it is effortless to quickly find and access any information as you would require from a "portable reference". One of my favorite features is the 32 pages of the
which, as if it was possible, a quick reference for the already concise 230+ page book. For example, listed again are the "Quick Command Lines" and "Command Reference" for the choice of built-in and easily obtainable (and often free) utilities Michael uses to demonstrate his concepts and techniques. Furthermore, he makes an effort to litter the book with treasures of facts which appeal to the trivia buffs such as the explanation about the validity of port 0 during his discussion about port scanning.
BOTTOM-LINE: Do not be dissuaded from the size of this book; what it "lacks" in physical girth is certainly made up for in content with its much appreciated relevancy with discussions about current and significant security concerns.
Pocket Reference Worth Owning.......2003-09-04
For any admin who struggles with the day to day issues of securing their network, this is a must have guide to help you address your holes.
With most guides, you receive only a quick overview of potential problems. With this guide, you not only get the "what's" but the "how's". All this in a compact, well thought out reference.
I would definitely recommend this book for any security conscious administrator.
Now if we could only get the users to read this.

Handy web application security resources.......2006-01-01
In last two months, I conducted a web application security course for professionals and I started to collect relevant course content. A pentest professional recommended me to read this book because it provides many useful tools and explanations of vulnerability exploits and defenses.
Especially, there is a section about Secure Programming, even it is brief, it could cover security reminder various essential components including database, web server, OS, etc. within the web application infrastructure. In addition, it mentioned current three web application languages - Java, PHP and ASP.
The content of reference center are very useful to developers, system/security admininstrator and auditor. Furthermore, the assessment checklist gives us a start to test the application.
At least, this book provides a starting point to people to go further.

This is a great book that introduces the core concepts of web application security for both security professionals and software developers. More security books should be written in this spare the details and cut to the chase format. It's high-level enough for beginners yet contains meat that techies and security veterans can benefit from. This book should be on the bookshelf of anyone wanting to learn the essentials of web application security.

Just as the network security Hacknote (the first in the series), this one delivers what is promises. The book provides a nice well-written, fairly comprehensive review of web application security.
It also manages to balance attacks and defenses, technology and methodology, tools and concepts, breadth and depth (as appropriate for the 180 page book). The book is very useful as a refresher or to move one step further in web security for a busy security professional who already knows the basics. The book obviously won't make you an expert (as likely no book will) and likely won't reveal any novel attacks to "hardened" web security types.
I liked the book, since it came handy when I needed to look up some web security items. The information is available elsewhere, but it was present in this book in a well-packaged form. Hacknotes also contains a nice "reference center" with the summary of web hacking methodology as well as some tricks to try while doing the testing/attacking.
