Book Description
Rita Mae Brown and her inseparable co-author, that fabulous feline Sneaky Pie Brown, are together again in this triple-threat collection of mystery and manners, southern-style. In fact, the first three novels in the Browns' Mrs. Murphy bestselling mystery series are reprinted here in their entirety. Whether you are already familiar with the detective work of postmistress Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen and her tiger cat Mrs. Murphy or are new to the team, you are sure to be intrigued by their unique approach. It's murder with a touch of whimsy, all set in the cozy hamlet of Crozet, Virginia. Meet Harry's friends, neighbors...and suspects--folks like notorious society vamp Boom Boom Craycroft in Rest in Pieces, or the nice Miranda Hogendobber in Murder at Monticello, and get a good taste of Brown's wickedly observant take on manners below the Mason-Dixon line. Cat lovers, mystery aficionados, and anyone who might like an armchair visit to a delightful old town down South, is sure to enjoy these witty, cleverly-plotted tales of suspense.
Customer Reviews:
Great book! I especially like the animal communication........2007-05-21
This is a great book. Well written and an easy read. I think this book would be great for all ages, teen and up, who likes a good mystery. The animals communicate with each other and with other animals throughout the stories. You definately want to read the books in order, though. One story refers to the ones before it. All in all, I'm glad I bought them and am looking forward to finishing this one and getting the next book of 3 stories in the series.

3 Great Books Together!.......2006-06-03
In "Wish You Were Here", we meet Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) and Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat) and Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi). Harry is recently divorced and a postmistress in Crozet, Virginia a very small town. She has grown up there, and finds it difficult adjusting to life as a divorcee' in such a small town. Half of the town is on her side, the other half on the side of her ex, Fair Haristeen, a beloved local vet. It also doesn't help that Harry is constantly seeing Boom Boom Craycroft, the other woman who broke up her marriage. But working in the town's post office with her pets each day does offer its own diversions. One such diversion is reading post cards...something Harry has always done. When 2 prominent business people are killed after receiving graveyard postcards reading "wish you were here", Harry realizes there is a pattern to the killing. And when a good friend receives one, Harry springs into action to stop the killer in his/her tracks.
In "Rest In Pieces", the animals once again play a huge role in solving a murder. The main character, Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry), along with her two animal friends Mrs. Murphy (a gray tiger cat) and Tucker (a corgi) lead the way. When newcomer, Blair Bainbridge, rolls into town a lot of folks in Crozet, Virginia believe that trouble rolled in with him. The handsome bachelor turns many female heads, and Harry tries to convince herself that she has sworn off men since her divorce. When pieces of a dead body are found on Blair's property, tongues start to wag. And when more pieces of the body are discovered during the Harvest Ball, a tragic event from Blair's past comes back to haunt him. Has this "Yankee" brought murder to this sleepy small-town?
Having just finished reading the first book in the series, I admit it was much easier for me to follow the dialogue between the animals in this second installment. At first, I had a difficult time following the discussions between the animals, as it adds to the already large cast of characters. However, I adore the way the animals speak to one another! Their antics are charming, and I find that it adds a lot to this great series.
The mystery had me guessing until the end. Normally, I am able to figure out the mysteries pretty quickly (as many cozies give a lot of clues), but I was surprised at the ending. This is a great series, and I look forward to reading the extensive collection of books by this author (and Sneaky Pie, of course!).
In "Murder at Monticello", a body has been discovered in the slave quarters of the home of Thomas Jefferson. Since Jefferson has been dead for 170 years, it is impossible to question him about the man found dead from a blow to the dead. And when another recently murdered body is discovered, it becomes apparent that someone wants the secrets that have been buried with the body to remain so. Coming into question is the practice of slavery, and the descendants of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson had been rumored to have fathered a child by one of his slaves, and it appears that the man found murdered may have been also been involved with one of the slaves. The citizens of Crozet band together to prove that their beloved Jefferson had nothing to do with the murder or cover-up, and while doing so they unearth secrets that have been hidden in the town for over a century.
I have become a big fan of this series, and enjoy the banter between the animals. The relationships between the members of the town have been evolving, and I like the way that Harry is loved and embraced by the people who have known her all of her life. She works hard, cares for her animals, and genuinely cares for the town and its residents. I look forward to future books in the series, and am hopeful to see more of Blair as a potential love interest for Harry.
If you like the KoKo and Yum Yum series by Lilian Jackson Braun, give this book a try. Enjoy!
Lighthearted and fun!.......2004-08-15
This is a great introduction to the Sneaky Pie Brown series, especially if you are like me and absolutely HAVE to read a series in order. These are really fun, quick reads. The cats and dog have some serious attitude, and the citizens of Crozet, VA are people you would want for neighbors and friends, other than the odd murderer inhabiting the tiny town. To a certain extent, these stories are similar to that old show Murder, She Wrote, because you just wonder how Harry constantly becomes involved in murder investigations in an otherwise peaceful town. You would think people would start avoiding her to save their own lives. I only gave it four stars because the mysteries are too easy to figure out!
On my top ten list!.......2004-08-06
Oh gosh, I don't even know how to start. I picked up Claws and Effect, a later book in the series, at my school's library last year and within minutes of starting it I was gobbling it up! I mean, murder, southern gentry, small-town gossip, and talking animals!!!! HOW GREAT CAN LIFE GET!? AND the dog is a CORGI *I am a considerably HUGE corgi fan* Written with wit and whimsy, Rita Mae Brown is my third favorite author. I am currently finishing "Murder She Meowed" (I read them all out of order) and it is my favorite Mrs. Murphy mystery yet!!! Hilarious! A MUST READ!!!

A Decent Jewel in My Collection.......2007-04-24
I loved Jewel's album, "Pieces of You". I grew up listening to it. The songs range from relaxing, to eye-opening, to uplifting. Now I am a little more grown up and have learned how to play the piano. Now, you have to remember I know close to nothing about guitars. I'm assuming that this songbook was most likely designed with guitar players in mind since that was what Jewel primarily featured on her album.
The transcriptions, however, are fairly simple. Good for a novice, but I strive for more of a challenge. For example, "Foolish Games" begins sounding alot like the original piano part recorded, but soon enough, it begins to rely too heavily on the melody. It nearly ignores the original piano part.
I do like having this songbook in my collection, but it doesn't stand out. It's just a jumble of washed out melodies to me. However, I still will give everyone the benefit of the doubt and give it 3 stars because I still play the songs regardless.
Book Description
This book allows you to make complicated blocks without cutting shapes ahead of time and you will not have to do any inset piecing and you can make blocks with curves by sewing straight lines. On top of that, your points will be pointy, not flat. Some of the blocks in this book are simple to do, so you may want to start out making those. But, some are more complex and have many pieces. Just take your time, follow the piecing diagram and refer to the color block pattern in the book. You will then end up with beautiful blocks that "you never dreamed you could paper piece."

Don't leave home without this valuable source.......1998-04-24
A passport is a really necessary item -- most of the time -- but as this book shows, you don't need one all the time. And, for certain places, a passport is not needed at all. But, how far can you go without one? This book gives you details on that and more. It will make your passport even more valuable, and, significantly, it will give you the lowdown on where you should go -- passport or not. Highly recommended.

Ten years later.......2005-07-09
This is a great little book for anyone in the greiving process. It has been ten years since i lost my husband and son 4 months apart. I read this book about a year after this happened but I was still in a fog at that time. I have been stuck in certain stages of my grief and can't seem to move on. Reading this again, makes me want to order several copies for my family and friends. The pain I felt reading it again was worth it because I now see where I was a victim of how society wanted me to behave after the deaths. I did everything wrong, my friends and family did everything wrong and now I hope to be able to start the long road back to some kind of decent life.
Great book.......2004-02-10
This is a great book for anyone who has suffered a loss of any kind. It helps you understand what you are going through and those around you.

Book Description
The "femininity" of colonized territories and subjects has provided Orientalist narrative with its most abiding metaphor for the exoticism of the East, and rape has served as the most enduring paradigmatic trope for colonial relations. Revathi Krishnaswamy argues, however, that this ravishment is often more about emasculating a male than about possessing a female. She suggests that the real goal of this feminization of colonized territory is actually effeminization--a process in which colonizing men use women and womanhood to delegitimize, discredit, and disempower colonized men. Uncovering an intricate nexus of race, caste, class, gender, sexuality, nation, moral legitimacy, and economic/political power--a nexus Krishnaswamy terms "effeminism" -- this study establishes the homosocial dynamics of colonial desire.
A fascinating study of "the inevitable intimacy between colonizer and colonized," Effeminism: The Economy of Colonial Desire attempts to chart the flow of colonial desire by examining the complex encodings of fears, fascinations, and anxieties in the works of British writers in India. The author examines the works of Flora Annie Steel, Rudyard Kipling, and E. M. Forster, and finds their works to be deeply implicated in the politics of colonial rule and anticolonial resistance. Krishnaswamy refuses to characterize the colonial encounter in terms of unchanging and monolithic Manichean oppositions, repeatedly drawing attention to fissures, contradictions, and slippages that attend the production of English manliness and Indian effeminacy. By restoring both the political in the unconscious and the unconscious in the political, the book proposes to understand colonialism in terms of historical failure, ideological inadequacy, and political contention.
Revathi Krishnaswamy teaches in the Department of English, San Jose State University.
Customer Reviews:
a must for any NYPD Blue fan.......2000-04-03
If you love the T.V. show NYPD Blue this is the book to read. It is full of infmoration about the show & the crimes they use to get the story lines from. Very interesting & easy to read.
Excellence - Bill Clark and David Milch!!.......1999-03-05
Bill Clark, former NYPD detective of numerous years, gives personal insight and beyond to how his real-life occurrences on the job inspired the creation of the series. David Milch explains how the storylines were developed upon Bill Clark's career experiences. You learn about Bill Clark's NYPD job experiences and how he and David Milch collaborated together to submit the fine drama we are pleasured to witness every week. Learn why a "skell" is called a "skell". Find out which favorite episodes are based on certain cases Bill Clark broke during his NYPD tenure. Thankyou gentlemen for the great six seasons so far, here's to many more!! If you are a Blue fan - THIS IS A MUST READ!
Essential for any true NYPD Blue fan.......1998-07-08
While many names pop up in the writing and production credits of every episode of "NYPD Blue," the show is essentially the work of two men: screenwriter Milch and ex-cop Clark. To truly understand the way they think and how that translates into Emmy-winning drama, this book is a must. It alternates between behind-the-scenes information from Milch -- with a heavy emphasis on Milch's feud with former star David Caruso during the first season -- and anecdotes from Clark's 25-year career as an NYPD cop and homicide detective. If you've never watched Blue and are only interested in the true-crime aspects, this probably isn't the book for you. And devout fans of Caruso should probably stay far away, as the book paints a very unflattering (and some would say unfair) portrait of the red-haired actor.
Great for Fans of Cop Shows!.......1997-05-13
If you love NYPD Blue, you must get this book.
David Milch explains the story behind most of
NYPD Blue's storylines, and how characters and
events were based on some of (former) Detective
Bill Clark's experiences. Though this may not
be as interesting to non-fans, it is a great insight
into how television works, and how most times real
life is more interesting than fiction.
Book Description
This introduction to spiking neurons can be used in advanced-level courses in computational neuroscience, theoretical biology, neural modeling, biophysics, or neural networks. It focuses on phenomenological approaches rather than detailed models in order to provide the reader with a conceptual framework. The authors formulate the theoretical concepts clearly without many mathematical details. While the book contains standard material for courses in computational neuroscience, neural modeling, or neural networks, it also provides an entry to current research. No prior knowledge beyond undergraduate mathematics is required.
Download Description
Neurons in the brain communicate by short electrical pulses, the so-called action potentials or spikes. How can we understand the process of spike generation? How can we understand information transmission by neurons? What happens if thousands of neurons are coupled together in a seemingly random network? How does the network connectivity determine the activity patterns? And, vice versa, how does the spike activity influence the connectivity pattern? These questions are addressed in this introduction to spiking neurons aimed at those taking courses in computational neuroscience, theoretical biology, biophysics, or neural networks. The approach will suit students of physics, mathematics, or computer science; it will also be useful for biologists who are interested in mathematical modelling. The text is enhanced by many worked examples and illustrations. There are no mathematical prerequisites beyond what the audience would meet as undergraduates: more advanced techniques are introduced in an elementary, concrete fashion when needed.
Customer Reviews:
Impressive book.......2004-08-31
This is a very impressive book. It covers in a systematic manner a broad portion of the field of theoretical neuroscience. It covers topics from models of single spiking neurons, through networks of interconnected neurons and up to neuronal plasticity. This book is also written very well. The style of this book reflects the background of the authors as Physicists; it therefore strives for simplicity wherever possible.
I used chapters from this book as a basis for some of my lectures in a course I teach: Introduction to Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience, a graduate level course. I especially liked the systematic approach they have adopted for describing various simplifications of the Hodgkin-Huxley equations.
All you ever wanted to know about spiking neuron models.......2004-08-19
I have used this book as an introduction and reference book for modeling neurons since I started my thesis work in computational neuroscience two years ago. It covers various types of spiking neuron models (e.g. Hodgkin-Huxley, Morris-Lecar, Integrate&Fire, Spike-Response-Model), noise in neuron models, population models, and plasticity/learning.
It is a very useful book, clearly written and comprehensive, providing sufficient detail and background information. Derivations of the equations are clearly presented and understandable to anyone with a decent knowledge of mathematics. A degree in physics is not required in order to read this book ;-) With this book and some programming skills, one has a solid foundation for modeling neurons on various levels.
I also like the literature recommendations at the end of each chapter, they give a good overview over important original papers and further reviews.
I would strongly recommend this book to undergraduate and PhD-students in computational neuroscience, as well as to anyone interested in modeling neurons.
