Product Description
This collection addresses the audition process for orchestral oboists, by one of the world's finest oboist. John Ferillo, Principal Oboist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, knows the agony, the angst, and the anticipation of the audition arena. His overview of his own experiences and his advice is fascinating reading. The oboe solo parts are faithfully reproduced in the most-often-used editions.
Book Description
From her debut recital at Carnegie Hall to performing with the orchestras of Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, oboist Blair Tindall has been playing classical music professionally for twenty-five years. She's also lived the secret life of musicians who survive hand to mouth, trading sex and drugs for low-paying gigs and the promise of winning a rare symphony position or a lucrative solo recording contract. In Mozart in the Jungle, Tindall describes her graduation from the North Carolina School of the Arts to the backbiting New York classical music scene, a world where Tindall and her fellow classical musicians often play drunk, high, or hopelessly hung-over, live in decrepit apartments, and perform in hazardous conditions. (In the cramped confines of a Broadway pit, the decibel level of one instrument is equal to the sound of a chain saw.)
Mozart in the Jungle offers a stark contrast between the rarefied experiences of overpaid classical musician superstars and those of the working-class musicians. For lovers of classical music, Mozart in the Jungle is the first true, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on backstage and in the Broadway pit.

Important book for those who need it.......2007-07-31
This book is important beyond its obvious criticisms. For one thing, it is a rather rich chronicle of a particular time and place in the New York performing arts world. It is also a cautionary tale about the choices you make as a performing artist, and so it is important for younger artists to read. If you have an intuitive sense that you have something more to say, as a musician, than to be a minor cog in the large wheel of the music business, then realize it early and find a path for yourself that doesn't constrict you.
On a larger scale, to read the statistics and view the panorama of the American classical music world over many decades is an instruction all to itself. It's not been parsed this way by any other writer, and this particular author has an insight into it that has a depth that is missed by journalists who are not invested in the mission of the music itself.
There's no spin in this story, and that is invaluable.
Judging the writer's personal life and the choices to "out" people by name? That's an individual thing, but it's fascinating all the same. She doesn't out anyone without also outing herself. Take it or leave it.
Required Reading.......2007-05-28
As a former music performance major, I strongly recommend this book to all performing musicians. I wish this book had been published before entering the musical world on a far more serious level. These days if you are not a Joshua Bell or Rostropovich than you will not make it in the professional performing world.
This book is a serious eye-opener to the suspicions and thoughts I had only mused upon.
What Happened To Classical Music In America And Why........2007-03-05
When I first began reading this book I almost put it down after a few chapters. Not that it's badly written, it isn't, but the stories of what goes on behind the scenes in the classical music world as experienced by the author didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know about life in the arts in general so it came as no big surprise. Then I read Chapter 12 titled appropriately TWILIGHT OF THE GODS and from that point on got the background on what happened to classical music in America and how it went from something once valued as a cultural necessity to becoming a commercial commodity to an ever decreasing audience. As someone who has spent over 20 years in public radio trying to bring classical music to a wider audience, it was eyeopening and depressing to see how it happened from someone on the inside who experienced it firsthand. I won't go into details here, you'll have to read the book for that but anyone who loves or cares about classical music in America owes it to themselves to check this book out to see what happened and hopefully what can be done about it. The autobiographical parts are sometimes offputting in their verisimilitude as Tindall doesn't hesitate to call a spade a spade especially concerning herself but the observations she makes based on experience and solid research cannot easily be dismissed or ignored. Classical music will never hold the place it once did in American society as there are just too many alternatives coupled with poor public education for that to be the case. However after reading this book you'll be in a much better position to understand why and just what can be done to keep it from disappearing altogether. The situation is bleak but far from hopeless if specific issues can be acknowledged and addressed. Knowledge is power and this book is an excellent place to start. Tindall's story is like a microcosm of the classical music industry. If she can overcome her problems (she did) then so can it.
Classical Musicians: Supply and Demand.......2007-01-11
Once you get past the titilating surface attraction, the sad message reads loud and clear: The supply of gifted and talented musicians is so much greater than the demand. We either need to find ways to increase the demand for "classical" music, or perhaps close lots of music schools for lack of future employment. Aside from the narration of her personal experiences, Ms. Tindall explores various components of the classical music business which support those experiences. 'Tis a sad and moving tale, but from my experience is all too true. Without more education of potential audiences for classical music so people understand what they are hearing (,,,like sports spectators can recognize the rules of the game, and the beauty of well-executed plays...)classical music will increasingly become marginalized.
I am actively recommending this book to many of my colleagues in the arts biz.
Educational about a life style I never imagined........2007-01-10
The writing makes it obvious that Blair moved to a field other than classical music. At times the writing is to detailed, as if she wrote of her experiences immediately after experiencing them. Maybe she was keeping a journal of her life.
The book is very enlightining about the behind the scenes world of, I am sure, the arts in general, not just classical music.

Oboe Method Review.......2007-02-22
This is a great book for teaching musicians phrasing. We're using it in our flute masterclasses.
Completely Great!.......2006-07-08
Awesome service! The book was delivered quickly and the price was lower than I had seen anywhere else. Thank you so very much.
The Most Important Book You Will Ever Own.......2003-05-19
If there is a required text for the oboist, the Barret Method is it. The etude studies are a standard part of the repertoire for students of all levels, and have been reproduced in other method books as well. I do not know of an oboist who has not worked from this book. Every student has their own favorite exercise and etude, and all learn to live with the yellow volume. While it can seem oppressive at times, the preparation it provides is second to none. It is a must-have for an obosits at any level.
Book Description
Perform timeless Oboe works with Erik Nielsen, piano! Perfect for practice, rehearsal, auditions, contest solos, performances, and more! Joseph Robinson of The Double Reed says of Elaine Douvas in this recording: "Eschewing overt expression in favor of implication and subtlety, she offers performances that are stylish and full of passion and conviction to be sure, but which, like all great art, withstand and reward the most careful scrutiny
.Expert phrasing and articulation by Elaine Douvas in this album demonstrate persuasively that the pieces she has chosen are sufficient to challenge the finest player's imagination, discipline and instrumental skill." This album is a delight for any oboist and again contains a rich collection of music from many periods, from Telemann to Hindemith.
Includes a complete music score printed on high-quality ivory paper, annotated with performance suggestions and a compact disc with complete versions (with soloist) followed by piano accompaniments to each piece, minus the soloist.

Book Description
After getting suspended from school, Ethan Oppenheimer is uprooted from his comfortable suburban life in Pennsylvania and sent to live in Washington, D.C., with grandparents he hardly knows. At Parker Junior High, he stands out as the only white student. Making friends there is difficult; fitting in, impossible. It doesn't help that his overprotective grandparents expect him to live their old-fashioned, frugal lifestyle.
As he tries to find his way in this new world, Ethan also struggles with issues from the world he left behind -- guilt about the events surrounding his suspension, anxiety about his parents' separation, loneliness for the company of his family and friends.
Slowly, Ethan adjusts. He makes a few friends; he joins the jazz band and learns a new instrument; he even gets used to dried-out dinners at 4:30 pm. Along the way he learns a lot about prejudice and acceptance -- and about himself and his changing family situation.

Encore! Encore!.......2007-06-30
The world needs more books like Ethan Suspended, where today's real kids wrestle with today's real problems. After a series of unfortunate events in his suburban middle school, Ethan is left hanging, high and dry, in his grandparents' neighborhood of Washington, D. C. Like an immigrant from another planet, he has to adapt to survive. Some kids might try to blend in. Ethan knows that's not an option. Instead he becomes a standout as the first ever jazz oboist at Parker Middle School. Ehrenberg unflinchingly lays bare the challenges that middle school kids face every day. Ethan, Sherita, Daron, Felix, Diego - each is a real ordinary kid who might be just like the kid sitting next to you on the bus. Each has a story worth telling. This story will give kids plenty to talk about as they compare the people and problems in the book to people and problems they encounter every day. Readers who like Ethan Suspended might also enjoy Danger, Long Division where another real kid growing up in the shadow of our nation's capital struggles with school problems and absent parents. Also, coming soon, Finch Goes Wild tells the adventures of another middle school musician just across the river from Ethan's neighborhood.
Customer Reviews:
This is a GREAT book!.......1998-12-31
If - like me - you have struggled for years trying to make decent reeds (american scrape), this is the book for you! The authors guide you painlessly through their step-by-step method. NOTHING is left out, and the chapters are carefully arranged so that you can quickly find what you need. My VERY FIRST reed using this method was performance quality!
The book is spiral bound so it stays open at the page you need while you're scraping - a simple but neat idea. Some highlights:
* How to sharpen your knife
* How to crow CORRECTLY (and understand what you hear!)
* Tying on without cracks or leaks
* Get a working reed from the crow alone
this book is worth every shekel!

Customer Reviews:
A must-have for players of baroque wind instruments.......2003-03-01
This compact volume (73 pp) gives a wonderful introduction to the practice of playing the baroque flute, recorder or oboe. Although coments on fingerings may not apply to instruments produced today, all remarks on tounging and ornamentaion are very valuable. It is a easily accesible authentic document from the beginning of the 18th century.

"A yellow cover slapped on a lukewarm regurgitation of common Office tasks."
The Dummies Quick Reference series is the only good Dummies series knockoff, and with good reason: The books fill a necessary void. They look and smell like Dummies books, but they contain concentrated bits of how-to information. At least that's what the covers promise.
The most revealing thing about this book is that it's "revised" by Bjoern-Erik Hartsfvang, which is the most interesting name I've typed this year. (Well, next to Sanky Winkervan.) The book doesn't exactly explain what was revised, so I was eager to determine whether any of Doug Lowe's familiar and clever writing snuck through Hartsfvang's revision. Apparently, and to my regret, none of it did.
Honestly, there's nothing obscenely wrong with this book. It documents most of the major things you can do with the popular Office 2000 components: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Publisher. There's a general introduction chapter that explains many of the common Office activities. Then the book breaks out into chapters covering each Office application. Still there's nothing special. It's just average information bobbing in a sea of mediocrity.
The topics aren't covered in real depth, which makes sense given the book's teensy size. There are step-by-step lists, but no inside hints, tips, or tricks. Often a table is presented as a solution without a real explanation of what the problem is. So, this book is more of a regurgitated manual than the kind of information I would expect to find. Despite the promise of Doug Lowe's name, this book is a disappointment. --Dan Gookin
