Book Description

For decades, Walter Legge (1906-1979) was the dominant figure in the recording of classical music. As music critic of the Manchester Guardian, head of the classical division of EMI/Angel, assistant artistic director at Covent Garden, and founder-owner of the great Philharmonia Orchestra, he was at the very center of international musical life during the mid-twentieth century.

A self-absorbed authoritarian and perfectionist who was either revered or detested by his contemporaries, Legge was passionately devoted to the highest standards of performance. Known as the "autocract of the turntable" or "the pope of music," Legge collaborated with such singers and conductors as Maria Callas, Herbert von Karajan, Sir Thomas Beecham, and Otto Klemperer to produce hundreds of recordings that are still considered the finest ever made in opera, the symphonic literature, chamber music, and especially German Lieder.

In On and Off the Record, the great soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Legge's wife and musical associate for over thirty years, compiles and annotates writings both by and about her late husband to provide a fascinating and rich portrait of this complicated musical genius. Connected by Schwarzkopf's own charming narrative, the collection combines fragments from Legge's unfinished autobiography, his correspondence, and his musical criticism with tributes from colleagues as well as radio and television interviews. The work includes an appreciation by Dorle Soria, cofounder of Angel Records, observations by distinguished musicologist Edward Greenfield on Legge's studio sessions, and a selected discography by Alan Sanders.

On and Off the Record is both a history of a golden age of recording and a lively memoir of the brilliant man who influenced it more than any other single person.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on Legge and the great artists of his time........1999-07-09

This is not just a book about Walter Legge, it covers the history of the Renaissance of Recorded Music as well. Each chapter deals with another of the great artists he worked with. He gives his detailed impressions of the person and the artist. A must is the one on Maria Callas, La Divina. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as editor puts everything in perspective with a preface to each chapter. A wonderful book.

Among opera divas, perhaps no star shines as bright as that of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, arguably the finest Mozart and Strauss soprano in the past 50 years. Though she gave her farewell performance in 1979, her recordings remain enormously popular today. So the revelation of her past connections with the Nazi Party must come as something of a shock to her admirers. In his biography Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Alan Jefferson relies on his extensive research of archival information--including the Party's 2,000-page file on Schwarzkopf--to reveal the full extent of her willing cooperation with the Nazis, a relationship that Schwarzkopf has consistently downplayed in the years following the war.

Although Schwarzkopf's Nazi past is undoubtedly a bombshell to her fans, Jefferson is reluctant to emphasize it more than other aspects of his subject's life. He also explores the complicated relationship between Schwarzkopf and her husband and partner, Walter Legge, as well as her working relations with Europe's greatest conductors. Anyone interested in a balanced, truthful account of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's life and work will find Alan Jefferson's Elisabeth Schwarzkopf fascinating reading.

Book Description

Internationally recognized as the finest Mozart and Strauss soprano since World War II, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was a highly acclaimed performer in both opera and lieder for nearly three decades. In this unauthorized biography of the remarkable diva, Alan Jefferson discusses her unique vocal and interpretive gifts and sheds new light on her life, including her opportunistic membership in the Nazi Party, her personal and professional partnership with maverick impresario Walter Legge, and her working relationships with Europe's leading conductors.

4 out of 5 stars A needed balance for both artist and woman?.......1999-03-13

I've been waiting for three months to write this review, because I didn't fully understand Jefferson's points: on the one hand this biography resembles a cultural history of postWeimar era (he certainly is an expert in that field); on the other, he starts promisingly what seems is going to be a series of unveiled actions and secrets and deeds performed by Schwarzkopf in Berlin and elsewhere. But he doesn't honour his promise. He limits to suggest that she could've been Goebbels' favourite (lover); that she exercised her radiant and ravishing looks to gain the favour of producers, directors in Berlin and Vienna within a rapacious careerism. He doesn't go any further. Jefferson himself has responded to criticism in Amazon.com saying that he wrote about someone who's still alive and his pains with Editor Victor Gollancz, all of which didn't allow him too much room to display the "proof he has in his hands about Schwarzkopf's deeds with the Nazi Party". We all know if we read in Grove that Schwarzkopf was "cleared" by the Allies late in 1947; so I don't think Jefferson is saying nothing new. We also know that her marriage to perfectionist Walter Legge resulted in a master-slave relationship. But to my view, and as an admirer of Schwarzkopf's art, Jefferson's account is more a ratifying document about human frailty, in this case Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's. I hoped I was going to find in this book some sort of balance between John Steane/Alan Sanders' Schwarzkopf: A career on records and Jefferson's book. The formers put Dame Elisabeth under the light of a goddess. Well, I must say that a goddess of magic with words she was, and that she was quite capable of bringing tears to one's eyes when performing with her voice. Jefferson and Steane: The supreme artist and the very earthly creature. Jefferson's book has several merits: one of the strongest is his marvelous way with Schwarzkopf's interpretations. In spite of his tendency to be dry his reviews and metaphors are very good indeed. As formyself I rather keep in my mind, as when I heard her "in the flesh" and turned pages for Geoffrey Parsons, the memory of Dame Elisabeth's quintessence of femininity, of beauty of looks, of beauty of voice and of sounds that cannot be forgotten. THE BALANCE WAS LOST!!!

I found this book a lot like Schwarzkopf's singing: Nice, but not exciting. I'm not sure that I learned much more about the singer or her singing from reading this book.

2 Video Tapes; 190 minutes, England, 1962; Sung in German. Copyright 1984 The Rank Organization. From back cover: " The Rank Organisation and Paul Czinner have created a superb document. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's performance as the Marschallin...is a performance f vivid humor by a great and beautiful singing actress. Sena Jurinac's Octavian...is ardent and marvelously sung. And the plaudits go straight down the cast list: Anneliese Rothenberger's charming Sophie, the tastefully controlled low comedy of Otto Edelmann's Ochs, and the mercurial wit of Erich Kunz's Faninal. A cast that has learned the best thing that Viennese opera represents: the art of ensemble"--Alan Rich, New York Times

A selection of the author's iconoclastic weekly columns in Building Design is now made available, decorated with the author's own extremely bad drawings, to those without access to the benefits of the architectural trade press. Alighting on subjects broadly architectural, Self talks you through a trip on an open-top bus in London, a visit to Barratt Homes and marvels over the ugliness of Cologne. His targets and objects of affection are as diverse as Pictish broughs; the SIPSocracy and autogeddon; the dignity, or otherwise, of labor; and Norman Foster's plane. Will Self takes this opportunity to scratch at the sore places and follies of modern life - the Millennium Dome, the Diana cult, Berlin, the new Getty Center, the Cotswolds; to promote his heroes - J G Ballard, Thomas De Quincey, Julian Jaynes; and to share his observations on topics ranging from Eric Gill's dress sense (and exotic sexual practices) to his own experiences as a hod carrier.

3 out of 5 stars Will Self's New Book is a Site for Sore Eyes.......2000-07-05

Crudely alluring illustrations aside, Will Self remains one of Britain's most keenly astute observers of modern life, a writer for whom satire is never merely a means to an end. Articulate and frequently downright funny, he dissects societies many foibles like a 21st century version of Jonathan Swift, only a bit nastier. In his latest book of non-fiction Sore Sites, a collection of 60 pieces from the weekly trade publication Building Design, Self plunders the breadth of architectural monuments and monstrosities to be found around England and the world, leaving no cobble stone unturned. His knowledge of the `built environment' as he calls it, is strangely compelling and gives a subject that might otherwise be sterile and dull, especially culled from a niche magazine such as Building Design, a new dimension that is both hilarious and insightful. Self, as our slightly demented tour guide, traverses the various Millennium buildings in and around London including the Millennium Dome, a project spearheaded by Tony Blair. We wind our way through the crumbling housing districts of Manchester, while Self muses upon the demise of British cities due to the loss of municipal housing. Expansive public pools, the Thames river, the Tower of London, vernacular architecture in Northern Ireland, all get the once over, and, Self even manages to question the integrity of such egregious structures like Seattle's Space Needle, where an over priced lunch can be had while you spin endlessly, taking in the grand views. Particularly Selfesque obsessions manage to rear their loveable ugly heads as well; preoccupations with scale, made all the more apt when put in the context of architecture, the freeways and roadways around England including the M25 and, of course, drugs, which he manages to argue, quite persuasively, are interconnected with, even predicated upon, the aesthetics of architecture. One of Self's literary heroes, J.G. Ballard even manages to sneak into the collection by way of his novel High Rise, and, well, you can guess the rest. Although not as eclectic, or thoroughly engaging as Self's first collection of journalism, Junk Mail, Sore Sites is a fast, enjoyable read that manages to put architecture in the context of a larger social, cultural landscape. These short pieces allow the reader to ingest the vast history of the `built environment' and understand just how meaningful it is in daily life besides merely being a marvel or an eye sore. So, grab this handy travel sized edition, throw it into the breast pocket of your jacket and take it along with you as you explore the incredible architecture of Rome, or contemplate the desert tray in a spinning restaurant atop Seattle.

                      Book Description

Creating Television brings television and its creators to life, presenting fascinating in-depth interviews with the creators of American TV. Having interviewed more than 100 television professionals over the course of his 15 years of research, Professor Robert Kubey presents here the 40 conversations that provide the most illuminating insights about the industry and the people working in it. These interviews bring television's creators to life, revealing their backgrounds, work, and thoughts about the audience and the television programs they create. Each interview tells a compelling tale of an individual's struggles and successes within a complex collaborative and highly commercial medium, offering readers rare insights on the human component in television's development.

Featured in this volume are actors, agents, writers, directors, producers, and executives, representing television's earliest days through to the present day. Spanning shows from I Love Lucy and The Tonight Show through to Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and The Sopranos, these creators share the stories of how they gained entry to the industry and built their careers, offering readers a rare opportunity to meet, up close, the people involved in creating many of the most famous and successful programs in the medium's history, and linking the creators' personal histories to the television programs they create.

With its unique insights on the people responsible for making television, this volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers in television history, sociology of culture, human creativity, television production, media studies, and mass media ethics. It will also be a popular reader for undergraduate and graduate students in courses addressing television, mass culture, media and society, American Studies, creativity, television history, and media ethics.

This is an utterly fascinating book, written by someone who has been watching television for more than 40 years. In that time, he has interviewed just about EVERYBODY in the business. So, if you're in the business, or want to GET in the business, or just have a fascination with the producers, directors, writers AND stars, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

I'm intrigued by the variety of people Bob Kubey has chosen for this book.

This can be nothing but a valuable resource to all who study media and television.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY books overall are my favorite books to get when I am just starting out on a new program. Everything is so basic, clear, and easy to understand, the way they show it. Highly reccomended to all beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning guide........2005-08-13

I'm a visual person. This is the perfect book for someone like me. Short on unnecessaary copy, long on simple to understand pictures and guides. I would highly recommend this book or any of the "Teach yourself Visually" books.

2 out of 5 stars FLASH-y book, Pretty pictures, sparce technical explanation.......2005-06-09

I am a beginning Flash student and bought this book to compliment my classes at school.

I was initially attracted to this book due the abundant screenshots and arrowed-pointed annotations. However, very often, the technical writing is extremely sparse, basically giving one no more information than what a contextual menu would pop-up in an application's glossary section. The technical writings are no more than blurbs, and often times one really needed to study the screenshots to understand what the blurb was addressing.

The book wastes a alot of pages on some very rudimentry sections on basic Windows 101 practices such as: Opening and saving files, changes colors of the text, and text manipulation. The first 100 pages were basically review and intuitive for anyone with a fundamental computer background; thus making the first one-third of book pretty much a waste.

Speaking of waste, there was a cutesy-picture at the start or each section that might have been more efficently used for technical information or a section objective rather than a cute graphic.

In addition, there are no practices files on a cd or a website to acquire the media assests. I would have to create my own graphics to do the exercises. Thus, my outcomes never looked like the finished exercises in the book. Two-thirds of the way into this book, I was shopping for another Flash MX 2004 book to replace this sad, boring book.

This book is okay for a quick bookshelf reference but do yourself a favor and save your $30.00 for a more substantial technical manual.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for beginners.......2005-04-06

This book taught me Flash MX 2004 very efficiently and quickly. Unlike other books it does not give tedious explanations that tend to tire and confuse the reader. It shows you precisely where and what to do. The illustrations are beautiful and direct, which is absolutely helpful for Flash graphics. This is also a well structured book so you can easily find the topics you want when you need a quick reference. If you want to learn Flash quickly and enjoy it while learning, buy this book.
