Fun for Beginning Guitar Players.......2005-07-06
It's all here, if you can play the notes........2003-04-11
I had an early video of his "Rust Never Sleeps" concert, in which Neil Young sat down by himself at a piano and played, note for note, the song "After the Gold Rush" as it appears on pages 54-57 of this book. The last page is mainly devoted to singing the line, "Flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun" twice, after "All in a dream, all in a dream the loading had begun." I realized that it would take a lot of preparation to get that far, but the time which I devoted to reaching that destination was some of the most worthwhile musical efforts that I have ever attempted.
There are 35 songs in NEIL YOUNG ~ DECADE. Fans of particular concerts, like WELD, might consider most of these songs very early in Neil Young's career. The book is copyright 1978, Weld didn't come along until 1991, and only includes "Cinnamon Girl," "Cortez the Killer," "Like a Hurricane," and "Tonight's the Night": only four of the 35 songs in this book. Fans of Buffalo Springfield might appreciate "Expecting To Fly," and people who sing harmony might see if matching the notes in the book is easier than trying to pick parts off the recorded version. The piano introduction for the song "Cinnamon Girl" has the kind of bass line that I find most interesting in the written music, jumping around slightly before it becomes the melody, and a vocal harmony is also provided. This book helped me learn how much is going on in music besides the melody. The complications for the song "Southern Man" take pages 58-61, while "Helpless" fits on pages 62-63 fine. I have a tendency to like songs called "I Believe in You," and the song on pages 64-66 asks the question like he is really worried about "Am I lying to you when I say that I believe in you?" "Oh, oh" coincides with "la la la la" after that.
Then we get "Heart of Gold" on pages 71-73, "Ohio" on pages 74-75, "Old Man" on pages 78-81, "Harvest" on pages 90-94, "The Needle and the Damage Done" on pages 96-99, and I already mentioned some of the more recent numbers. The last song in the book is "Long May You Run" from 1976, suggested for Bright Country Style. You might have heard a few of the other songs in the book, but these are the ones I think you ought to play, if you want to learn something. I hope you can play them better than I can.

Korean Anthropology: Contemporary Korean Culture in Flux (Anthology of Korean Studies Vol. 3) (Anthology of Korean Studies)
Manufacturer: Hollym International Corporation ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 156591175X Release Date: 2003-07-01 |
Product Description
This is Volume III in the Anthology of Korean Studies. Korean anthropology holds a unique position in the field of anthropology, having first developed with native scholars studying native culture under the prevalent influence of cultural and social anthropology, rather than with the past western practice of studying the Other. Since the 1980s, several attempts have been made to examine Korean culture from different points of view, such as political economy and area studies. This trend is visible in the articles contributed to the Korea Journal over the past forty years. While the early articles focus mainly on Korean shamanism and folklore, the emphasis shifts in the latter half to more diverse subjects such as Koreans abroad and changes in Korean communities under the social, economic, and political influences of the modern times. This volume, Korean Anthropology: Contemporary Korean Culture in Flux, presents 30 original articles carefully selected from the Korea Journal covering all aspects of Korean culture seen through the distinct viewpoints of anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, geographers, architects, folklorists, and psychiatrists. The articles, chosen under the guidance of Professor Han Kyung-Koo, are arranged along five major themes. Articles in Part I discuss different ways of understanding Korean culture including traditional conceptualization and utilization of nature and living space, and representations abroad. Part II looks at the changes and continuities in Korean communities and beliefs under the social and political influences of modern Korea, ranging from Saemaeul Movement, religious conflicts, and marriage customs. Part III focuses on Korean women in "patriarchal" Korean society and the male-female relationship in contemporary Korea. Among featured subjects are women on Jeju-do island, female workers in multinational corporations, and family relations. Shamanistic rituals and fortunetelling, the main theme of Part IV, are still prevalent in Korea alongside modern medicine and cutting-edge technology despite the conflicts and confusion brought on by the rapid industrialization and westernization of Korean society. While some traditions have been discarded, other have been retained in a different or compromised form. This brings us to the final Part V which explores how various social relationships are formed and maintained within modern Korean society: men and women continue to rely on kinship and social ties to survive in a highly competitive and centralized society. Intended to be an introductory yet comprehensive collection of readings on Korean culture, we hope this volume will stimulate further debates and discussions on Korean culture and society.

Application of Inertial Sensors and Flux-Gate Magnetometer to Real-Time Human Body Motion Capture
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423574656 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A024223. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Human body tracking for synthetic environment interface has become a significant human- computer interface challenge. There are several different types of motion capture systems currently available. Inherent problems, most resulting from the use of artificially-generated source signals, plague these systems. A proposed motion capture system is being developed at the Naval Postgraduate School which utilizes a combination of inertial sensors to overcome these difficulties. However, the current design exhibits azimuth drift errors resulting from the use of inertial sensors. This thesis proposes a new method of compensating for azimuth drift using a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer. The magnetometer capable of azimuth drift compensation since its sensitive axis is not collinear with the local vertical. This thesis includes a program for simulating the operation of a fluxgate magnetometer in C++. The included C++ code simulates a fluxgate magnetometer and provides an estimate of azimuth based on the magnetometer's output which is typically within five degrees of the actual azimuth. Real magnetometer data for testing and verification was accomplished by bench testing a real fluxgate magnetometer.

Book Description
This collection of essays examines the dynamic cultural world of Russia's lower classes during the last decades of the prerevolutionary order.Download Description
The popular culture of urban and rural tsarist Russia revealed a dynamic and troubled world. Stephen Frank and Mark Steinberg have gathered here a diverse collection of essays by Western and Russian scholars who question conventional interpretations and recall neglected stories about popular behavior, politics, and culture. What emerges is a new picture of lower-class life, in which traditions and innovations intermingled and social boundaries and identities were battered and reconstructed. The authors vividly convey the vitality as well as the contradictions of social life in old regime Russia, while also confronting problems of interpretation, methodology, and cultural theory. They tell of peasant death rites and religious beliefs, family relationships and brutalities, defiant peasant women, folk songs, urban amusement parks, expressions of popular patriotism, the penny press, workers' notions of the self, street hooliganism, and attempts by educated Russians to transform popular festivities. Together, the authors portray popular culture not as a static, separate world, but as the dynamic means through which lower-class Russians engaged the world around them. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume are Daniel R. Brower, Barbara Alpern Engel, Hubertus F. Jahn, Al'bin M. Konechnyi, Boris N. Mironov, Joan Neuberger, Robert A. Rothstein, and Christine D. Worobec.

The Gitksan Potlatch: Population Flux, Resource Ownership and Reciprocity (Cultures and Communities: A Series of Monographs)
Manufacturer: Holt, Rinehart and Winston of Canada ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0039280721 |
Product Description
Potlatching is the giving away of food and money at feasts in return for recognition of social status. Unlike most of the studies of potlatching written in the past few years, this book has drawn upon first-hand observation in the field, made possible by the lifting of the ban on the ritual in 1951. This book not only provides much greater detail on the exact sums contributed and received at potlatch feasts, but it also shows how the sums of money are linked to the positions of the participants in their society. What emerges is a system of claims to the use of resources and the conflicts which are generated by the shifting stengths of numbers of each group of claimants. The Natives' own view of the system is one of "breaking even" and the author has asked what ends this elaborate and time-consuming ritual serves. Recent theories are examined at length in the light of new data and another theory proposed: namely, that tthe potlatch fosters a more even and orderly distribution of peopel to resources. Ethnographic data from many other societies are discussed briefly to show the similar effectrs of many different kinds of social forms which, until recently, had been thought to play no particular role in the adaptation of peoples to their environment.

New Approaches to Theodor Fontane: Cultural Codes in Flux (Studies in German Literature Linguistics and Culture)
Manufacturer: Camden House ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1571131434 |
Book Description
This collection of essays offers eight incisive perspectives on the novels and essays of Theodor Fontane (1819-1898). While Fontane scholarship has primarily focused on the 'objective' portrayal of 19th-century German/Prussian culture and on the authenticity with which his work supposedly mirrors social reality, this collection investigates rhetorical and communicative patterns in the works that call this mirroring effect into question, emphasizing the difficulty - and ultimate impossibility - of 'realist' representation. Here 19th-century German realism is re-evaluated as a set of normative conventions - one which, at crucial points in Fontane's narratives, breaks down. But it is precisely at these points of breakdown where some of the most repressed and excluded aspects of Fontane's culture can be uncovered. Each of the essays reads the textual unconscious in a different way: as patterns of cultural disturbance, as the unmasking of male hysteria, as essayistic gaps, as gender prejudice. The authors present readings of Fontane that attempt to give an account of the multi-layered interplay of cultural codes and rhetorical conventions present in his time with reference to some of the most recent advances in literary, psychoanalytical, and media theory. Marion Doebeling holds a Ph.D. in German literature from the Univeristy of California, Davis.

Ending the Affair: The Decline of Television Current Affairs in Australia
Graeme Turner Manufacturer: UNSW Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0868408646 |
Book Description
Ending the Affair examines the state of current affairs television in Australia today by pondering its future, while drawing lessons from the past. The book questions the social and political value of what we now think of as current affairs journalism. Underpinning this approach is the conviction that TV current affairs serves functions which are important to a civilized democracy. If the contemporary version of television current affairs is not serving that function--and if there is nothing else which is--then Ending the Affair suggests this is cause for concern.Along the way, the book provides fresh insight into key components of the history of Australian television current affairs. It deals with the earliest programs as well as with the most contemporary versions; with commercial free-to-air programs, as well as the ABC, SBS and pay TV. Finally, the analysis is placed within the industrial and regulatory conditions in which Australian TV current affairs are produced and consumed.
