Book Description
Mozartiana is a surprising, eccentric, and enchanting testament to the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Artist Joseph Solman has gathered opinions, remembrances, letters, and more-from Albert Einstein, Virginia Woolf, Friedrich Nietzsche, Leonard Bernstein, Maurice Sendak, and some 200 others-and blended them with his own sketches and drawings of the great composer. The result is a glorious celebration of Mozart's life and art, and a unique gift to music lovers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice little book........2003-02-26
Very nice to read about some famous people's opinions of Mozart. Especially interesting are the opinions of people closer to his time. Some of the reading was full of hot air and a little boring. "Too many words" to describe how they felt about Mozart. A nice book to have in your Mozart collection, if you can get it for just a few bucks. Four stars for the older recollections in the book.
If you like Mozart, you'll love this........2002-04-01
Short, pithy, collected quotes from a wide variety of writers, thinkers, and even musicians on Mozart. Easy to read, useful for collecting impressions from a wide range of authors. As an amatuer musician, I know it is true--Mozart is too easy for beginners, too hard for professionals. Should inspire casual readers to seek out other works on his life.
Words about one of the greatest composers.......2000-08-21
this short collection of quotes helped me learn a lot about mozart and opinion of him, but there weren't too many memorable lines. still, if you are a fan of mozart's this is an interesting collection.

Book Description
Scholars, educators, health professionals, and activists from a variety of fields have struggled with one of the most significant questions of contemporary life: How do we rescue the experience of death and dying from the mire of fear, denial, and secrecy that it has been associated with for the better part of a century? In When Death Goes Pop, Charlton D. McIlwain describes a striking emerging shift in the way that death is represented in such omnipresent forms of media as television-a shift that seems to be moving the American discourse on death and dying from the private sphere to the public. The book surveys the past thirty years of death-related television programming, from daytime soaps to prime-time dramas, focusing primarily on Home Box Office's Six Feet Under and its innovative approach to the subject, and from the Sci-Fi Channel's Crossing Over to the genre of paranormal programming as a whole. This book also discusses the increasing use of multimedia and the Internet in the funeral industry and how the new technologies change the way that we remember the dead as they create and sustain what we might call a "virtual community of death."

Worth the money.......2007-02-25
I was so impressed by this book when I checked it out from the library I realized I had to have a copy of my own for those times when problems crop up that drive me toward the deep end. This book does what it claims. Though it won't answer all of your problems (what book would), it's easy to understand and can provide simple solutions to what seem like complex problems. It also gives the reader various references and free helpful programs on-line. I highly recommend it.
Not a technical manual.......2007-02-03
OK for the nontechnical XP users. Most of these hints have been published elsewhere but it is a nice collection.
Would recommend this book.......2006-08-15
I love the format Steve Bass uses while writing
about computer annoyances. Many of the tips and solutions
can save you frustrations that are always there even in
a minor way because you may not know how to fix them.
Very Practical,Funny,To the Point........2006-07-17
After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.
PC Annoyances.......2006-02-28
This is not the usual boring computer book. Just the opposite.
I'm reading it the second time with a felt tip marker. After reading a chapter I go to my computer, explore, and make changes. I've learned more reading this book than any other computer book I've purchased. And it's written so the average computer user like me can understand.
Book Description
Operating a personal computer requires more than just dealing with the PC itself. As anyone with even a modicum of computer experience can attest, there are all types of hardware devices which you must become familiar with disk drives, printers, monitors, and sound cards, just to name a few. And, naturally, each is fraught with its own set of bugs and snares. PC Hardware Annoyances, the latest installment of O'Reilly's highly successful Annoyances series, aims to optimize these peripheral systems by offering easy fixes to their most annoying traits. With over 40 titles to his credit, author Stephen Bigelow identifies all those annoyances that make you cringe in frustration. Then, through the use of snappy, entertaining, and practical solutions, he shows you how to clear each obstacle one step at a time. After that, the rest is up to you. Designed for PC users of all levels, this handy guide doesn't bore you with long dissertations on the workings of the technology at hand. Instead, it offers straightforward, easy-to-understand troubleshooting solutions. For maximum ease of use, PC Hardware Annoyances is broken up into several broad hardware categories. They include desktops, laptops and PDAs, graphics, sound, hard drives, CD/DVD drives, network, and printers and scanners. And while you may not use each of these accessories currently, chances are it's only a matter of time before you'll need their technological services whether it's for work or recreation. What makes PC Hardware Annoyances especially timely is the growing trend among computer owners to simply upgrade their PCs as they age, rather than replacing them altogether. With peripheral devices becoming increasingly affordable, there's no reason not to. But as with any do-it-yourself project, trouble lurks around the corner if you don't have the right guide. Having difficulty setting up your color inkjet printer? Trying to burn a music CD? Is your modem misbehaving? The remedy: PC Hardware Annoyances, of course!
Customer Reviews:
resource-full book, but little for the average computer user.......2007-04-28
Do you know how to get to Mouse Properties in the control panel without instructions? If not, then you might not be able to follow half the material in this book.
Examples of Annoyances addressed in this book:
"I replaced my CMOS backup battery just a few months ago, but I still see occasional CMOS battery errors..."
"I updated my BIOS and need to clear the CMOS RAM, but my motherboard lacks the proper jumper..."
"I want to overclock my PC..."
"Will my system crash if two PCI devices share the same IRQ line?"
"I tried to install DDR333 DIMMs along with my existing DDR400 DIMMs... I thought the modules were compatible..."
"I ran the System File Checker for Windows XP and got a DLL cache error."
There are a few easier topics that an average computer user like me can find useful and understandable ("My CD-RW drive refuses to eject my audio CD."), but the examples above are typical of the difficulty level of the content.
I'm a big fan of the Annoyances series, and this is a book meant for those who are keenly interested in computers, so I'll make sure to go back and read it after I've accumulated more knowledge. In the meantime, it'll serve as a standby reference to consult if a particular hardware problem comes up.
Awesome.......2006-06-29
This is one of the most useful books I have ever bought. I had three particular problems in mind, and I wasn't buying this book specifically for them; it was more for reference. But I opened it up and it had clear, concise, and easy instructions for doing what I needed- much better than the information I had gotten through hours of internet searches into the problems.
This is a must own for any PC owner, ESPECIALLY if you have Windows.
Interesting resource for hardware hackers.......2005-05-02
I liked this book, but that's easy because it's a topic that interests me. If hardware hacking is something that you enjoy you will probably find a lot to like in this book. Because in general it's all about the tips and tricks.
That being said this book, like all of the Annoyances books, is not a complete reference. You won't find the list of PC cards, but you will find tips on how to fix flaky USB connections and the like.
A great book to have around "just in case"..........2005-01-31
O'Reilly has a series of Annoyances books on the market, and I recently had a chance to review the PC Hardware Annoyances book by Stephen J. Bigelow. It's a really good book with an enormous number of tips and tricks to fix misbehaving computer components.

Index
As you can see, Bigelow covers a lot of ground in the book. I almost view this as a combination between a Hacks book and a compilation of questions asked by readers. And in fact, the compilation angle is pretty accurate. O'Reilly solicits annoyances from a number of sources, and these submissions make up a large part of what the author writes about. The questions can range anywhere from pretty basic ("my cursor skips all over the screen, and the mouse doesn't seem to be controlling it very well") to pretty advanced ("I get an HPF9XDR0 error whenever I try to print to my HP printer"), and Bigelow covers all of them with complete and often humorous information. In between the annoyance/fix entries, you will find a number of warnings, tips, and tools that will make your interactions with your hardware much more error-free.
The "bad" thing about a book like this is that *your* particular annoyance may not be covered. Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do about that. But the breath of questions covered should give you some insights that can be applied to your problem if it isn't answered directly. This is a book you probably want to have around your bookshelf "just in case" something goes wrong. Very well done.
Book Description
Windows Vista may be the next big thing, but it still contains enough quirks and unaccountable behaviors to vex anyone. This unique guide not only discusses the most irritating features of the latest Microsoft operating system and how to get around them, but also explains how to improve Windows and do more with the software than Microsoft intended. You'll find information on setup, installation, upgrade from other Windows versions, the revamped interface, new security features, user accounts, troubleshooting, and the markedly improved Internet Explorer 7. Other chapters cover a wide range of key topics:
- Media Center - tips on photos, videos, music, TV tuners, HD, and the media center engine
- The Registry - explains the background and tools for working with Windows' database of settings
- Tinkering Techniques - offers hacking-style customization and problem-solving topics
- Networking and Wireless - includes LAN setup, WiFi sniffers and access points, connection sharing, firewalls, routers, and FTP
- Scripting and Automation - introduces simple programming using the Windows Scripting Host for automating repetitive tasks
No other book takes our patented cranky, solutions-oriented approach. Our collection of tips, tools and techniques will improve your experience with Windows Vista, so you can control the OS -- rather than the other way around.

Worth Every Penny.......2006-03-17
This book is written in a very easy to understand language. The hints are pratical and should help everyone in some way. Microsoft will not tell you much of how to make your operating system work the way YOU want it to. Steve Bass takes care of that. It is a valuable resource for anyone who has a PC, novice or experienced. I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about computers and I even learned a few new tricks.
A sanity saver.......2004-08-24
I am still pretty much a neophite where computers are concerned, so I bought this book hoping that it could get me out of the "messes" I'm always getting into. It really DOES help! Thank you!!! Steve Bass, I'm now searching for other books you have written.
Concise, excellent, usable tips.......2004-07-14
I've read many computer books, and I have to say this is one of the most informative. More important, Steve provides hundreds of tips to overcome the small (and large) problems of Windows. It's nice to konw that even a well-known computer columnist experiences the same frustrations we ordinary users do. Happily, he willing to share the solutions he's found.
In my first reading, I discovered the answers to at least 7 windows annoyances I've encountered.
And instead of including a cost-raising CD, the publisher has made 100 utility programs available online, a better solution that including them on a quickly outdated disk.
A useful, and often amusing book.
You need it!
A readable computer book!.......2004-07-04
This is the first computer book I actually said down and read, cover to cover. It holds your interest, and each tip gets you excited for the one to follow. I call it my AHA book. All the time you read it, you go "Aha! That's the problem!" or "Aha! That's how to get rid of that!". Can't recommend it highly enough.
Helps me, helps my friends... which in turn helps me too!.......2004-06-29
I bought three copies of your book at Amazon and gave them as party gifts during private receptions. They were greatly appreciated. It was in fact a very selfish gift: I have hopes that your book will help these people and stop them from calling me each time their system has a hiccup. My friends overseas unfortunately are not fluent enough in English, their version of Windows is either French or German, otherwise I would already have shipped a couple of cases of your excellent book to get some peace in my Inbox.
