Book Description
Seasoned piano educator Gail Smith offers this beginning-level piano method employing gospel, Christmas and sacred tunes. This volume begins with an introduction to elementary note reading on the piano. A brief dictionary of musical terms and basic piano chord encyclopedia are included. Carefully sequenced exercises and arrangements allow the student to progress gradually from simple arrangements to more elaborate settings, gradually incorporating right and left hand fills and patterns. In order to illustrate various arranging concepts, some tunes are shown in two settings-one simple, the other more complex. This is a great book to be used with or without lessons to learn the art of piano improvisation. On the 99-track CD (sold separate or in a book/cd set), the author talks and plays through the entire book. The author's goal is to encourage students to create their own gospel piano arrangements.

can be of help.......2007-02-11
Tries to cover a lot in a short time. Not clear why the teaching is unique to gospel. Plenty of sheet music but short on lyrics. Binding makes the book quite difficult to keep open on the music stand. Still, I go to it now and then for a bit of different practice.

Book Description
Since 1945, Britain's political and cultural landscape has been transformed by social movements campaigning on issues of gender, race, disability, sexuality, the environment, and peace. Yet until now there has been no systematic attempt to chart the histories of these movements alongside one another. From early attempts to decriminalize gay sex to the movement against globalization, this book gives fresh insights into a neglected side of British history.
Book Description
They were some of rock 'n' roll's brightest stars and greatest innovators. Now the records, the photos, and the memories are all that remain.
Name any kind of tragedy and someone in the rock cannon has lived through it -- or not. This encyclopedic collection delivers the full story behind the untimely ends, freak accidents, psychotic fans, deaadly concerts, hard drugs, hard time, and other calamitous events that have sent rock's royalty down in flames.
Chronicling the demise of legends including Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Karen Carpenter, Marvin Gaye, and Buddy Holly, Causalties of Rock also records more obscure catastrophes: from the disappearance of a member of the Yardbirds singer Keith Relf. Investigating "curses" that plague the Beach Boys, the Grateful Dead, the Pretenders, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, this unique book explores the impact of countless horrendous happenings in the history of rock, and pays trubute to the stars who burned too brightly for too short a time. Packed with photos and fatal facts, it is an essential read for any music fan.
Customer Reviews:
Is the book as bad as the description?.......2006-07-22
Would it be too much to expect MTV/VH1 to proofread their editorial copy before they upload it to Amazon? In the first paragraph, the phrase they're looking for is "rock canon", not "rock cannon"; and a simple spellcheck would have flagged "deaadly". In the next paragraph, they manage to work three embarrassing errors into a single sentence. First, they misspell the title of the book as "Causalties of Rock". Second, while they doubtless intended to say that Yardbirds member Keith Relf disappeared, the absence of the comma that should follow "Yardbirds" means that what they actually say is that one of Keith Relf's members disappeared. Third, it's obvious that the entire second part of the sentence is missing -- we get the first half of a from/to construction, "from the disappearance of a member of the Yardbirds singer Keith Relf", but not the "to [whatever]" second half that should complete it. This is bad. Normally, the sales copy gets more scrutiny than almost any other text pertaining to a book. Seeing this kind of sloppiness does not make me feel confident about the overall quality of the work.
Good Book.......2004-02-24
This book explains in detail not only the deaths of some of the greatest rock musicians, but also of their successes. It was very sad to hear how these great musical genuises met their ends. I only had one problem with this book. I was thinking since this book was named "The Casualties of ROCK" that it would only include rock musicians. However, I found a few rap artists, such as Tupac Shakur. I'm not saying that this disappointed me, it just mislead me. But this was a very helpful book, and it provided me with information that I had been searching for.
interesting.......2002-10-25
This book is great for people who are interested in rock and roll history. I learned, unfortunately, how tragically some musicians lost their lives. Some committed suicide or were murdered; others were killed by car or plane crashes; for others drug and alcohol took over their lives. This is a quick read. And, I admit there are some names that I believe shoudn't have been left out- e.g. R&B legends- Donny Hathaway and Phyllis Hyman. But, I still highly recommend this book! You will probably learn some interesting facts that you never knew!

From the supplier: Marine inland insurance underwriters nationwide must assay their exposure to earthquake losses because earthquakes are not limited to California. In fact the most severe occurred in New Madrid, MO, in 1811 and 1812. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates that the greater Boston area has the potential for a 7.6 Richter-scale shaker. A 6.2 alone would cause $2-10 billion in property damage. Risk evaluation parameters are examined.

Customer Reviews:
Intense, comprehensive.......2007-03-09
This is an intense and comprehensive manual, not for the faint of heart. Without a good working knowledge of Windows XP Pro under your belt you could easily, from time to time, get lost as you comb through its pages.
A little too formal.......2006-01-26
This is an excellent book on quality security, let there be no doubt. But what it didn't provide to me was an ability to reel that security back to something manageable for myself. There is information on all of the security threats we face. And it's all arranged in bulleted lists. But there is no prioritization in it. No sense of; we would do this first, or these three things are critical and the rest are nice to have.
I think this book was written for me, in everyday words and pictures........2006-01-26
I am a novice at internet security, and never realized my computer was of interest to anyone other than myself. I was one of the 90% infested with everything imaginable. Thanks to the Author this is no longer the case.

PC security isn't an option any more, it's a necessity..........2006-01-18
Securing your PC is not an option any more... it's a "must do" task. And while Windows XP has gotten marginally better in securing your environment by default, it's still not adequate. You need to take additional steps, and it's really not as hard as you might think. I recently got a review copy of PC Magazine Windows XP Security Solutions by Dan DiNicolo, and I'm impressed...

DiNicolo is very comprehensive in his coverage of all the areas that need to be taken into consideration. You can't just stop at virus scanners and think you have it covered. The writing is at a level that most PC users can follow without getting totally lost, while not talking down to people who have been using computers for years. Add in a number of screen shots and such, and you have a great guide to implementing security in all the areas that are waiting to be exploited. I appreciated his effort to look at both built-in and 3rd party tools in his analysis. For instance, XP has a firewall, but there are also various 3rd party firewall packages that are very solid (and free for personal use). He also highlights utilities that can be used to scan your system for weaknesses that could bite you. For instance, he shows how the TweakUI utility can be used to make your logon screen more secure than it is by default. It's a security opening I hadn't thought of. Or there's IE-SPYAD2, a tool that adds dangerous sites to your IE Restricted zone setting to make sure you don't get clobbered by visiting a site that can harm your system.
I definitely learned a few things that I need to implement on my systems to make them more secure. Obviously, I'm not going to tell you what they are. :) But suffice it to say that most everyone who reads this book will come away with a to-do list for hardening their systems. A very good book...
A must for users.......2006-01-08
This is a fabulous book! As tech support for an ISP, I see my customers struggle every day with the issues dealt with in PC Magazine Windows XP Security Solutions. I am glad to be able to recommend a book that is written clearly and correctly, that any of my customers can use without difficulty.
