Book Description
In this book, Ray Valla shares the insights of a veteran bluegrass mandolinist. This method would best be appreciated by a student with some previous musical experience, as fundamentals of note-reading on the mandolin are not addressed. This is, however, the ideal book for the intermediate to advanced player. It is filled with practical hints to improve your general musicianship and increase the speed of your progress. For example, Ray suggests learning a new tune by mastering its individual "licks" before attempting to assemble the whole. The book's 27 well-known bluegrass tunes are shown in standard notation and tablature with arrows indicating picking direction. Illustrated with photographs, charts and diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite mandolin tune book!.......2007-05-13
The first time I saw this book was 25 years ago, when I was still learning how to play the mandolin. I liked the fact that it had very nice and sometimes unique arrangements of some of the standard Bluegrass/Old Time tunes, printed in large, easy-to-see type, with tabulature, as well as some info about mandolins and music theory. I memorized many of the tunes, and when I played them at jams and gigs, they often stood out as being more jazzy or bluesy arrangements of the old standards. Then, 5 years ago, I gave my old copy to one of my former students, who -- alas -- had landed in prison and wanted to play the mando there to pass the time. Later, I was dismayed that I couldn't find another copy of the book. So, imagine my delight at discovering recently that it had been reprinted with a new cover! Now my new students will be able to enjoy it too.... Check out the "June Apple" and Ragtime Annie."
A GOOD BOOK FOR INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS.......2007-03-10
This book was published in 1974. It starts basically with finger and scale exercises, then it gets straight into old bluegrass standard tunes based around different scales as it goes. It also touches on rythm and chord techniques. The CD (included) is a very handy addition to the book, as it lets you hear the application to the techniques.
A good book for intermediate players interested in bluegrass.
You won't be disapointed.......2004-08-13
I think this book has been out for a number of years so isn't as advanced as the Sam Bush one which is also very good. Also there's the Chris Thile tutorial, on DVD, and a great book with 2 cds by Butch Baldassari on Homespun called 30 Fiddle Tunes for the Mandolin. Along with that book this one by Ray Valla is the one I'd start out with. The tunes are all in much the same style which sort of incorporates both the melody and the rhythm together, and does so quite effectivly. I was surprised because when I bought my first mandolin a few years back I bought this book partly because they had it at the music store where I got the mandolin. I say surprised because I was immediatly able to really start picking tunes with it and still use it now. There's also a good video (on DVD now I'd imagine) by Norman Blake (Homespun) with some nice old time tunes that you won't find anywhere else. Anyway, the Ray Valla book and cd, a somewhat chance buy at the time but a real winner.
Bluegrass Mandolin Method - Another great book from Mel Bay.......2003-12-01
This is a great book for individuals new to the mandolin who'd like to jump right in and learn some bluegrass instrumentals. The arrangements are challenging enough to keep most players interest but not too difficult to discourage those just starting out. The book is written with both tablature and standard notation and the larger print adds to its user friendly format. A CD is now available and his highly recommended so the student can actually hear the tunes played at a performance tempo. The book covers some music theory principles as applied to the mandolin.
I highly recommend this book.
Deluxe Bluegrass Mandolin Method.......2001-08-04
Ray Valla's book Deluxe Bluegrass Mandolin Method is by Mel Bay and it is a cool book and on the cover it has a picture of an F Style Mandolin with the fancier scroll.

Book Description
The authoritative guide that will take shy guys everywhere-from the first date to home plate."Hey baby, what's your sign?" "Come here often?"These lines may work in the movies, but not in real life, and not for the millions of guys too shy to risk their dignity on such flimsy pickup lines. Barry Dutter knows, he used to be a shy guy himself, sitting at home night after night watching television because asking a woman for a date was simply too scary. Not anymore. He's learned dozens of tricks to help shy guys ease into the swing of dating while avoiding humiliating rejections and romantic disasters. Keeping a shy guy's tender ego in mind, he tells guys where to meet women, which ones to approach and which to avoid. Readers will learn what to do with them, and how to act from the first date through commitment time. Filled with hilarious lessons from the pop culture we grew up in, this witty, commonsense guide is a must for everyone who's ever been afraid to try-which means everyone.
Customer Reviews:
valuable advice to the lovelorn.......2007-02-04
Barry Dutter's book Shy Guide to Dating gives valuable advice to the lovelorn. His common sense, no nonsense approach shows how an introverted guy can date and eventually marry a nice girl. I truly appreciated that the author was formerly a "shy" guy who writes from the perspective of a person who has figured out how to meet girls and now what to share with others. The chapter titled, "Best Places to Meet Girls" was probably the most helpful to me. The author has obviously been to hundreds of bars, nightclubs, discos and through trial and error has developed a system to talk to girls. These techniques can save a shy guide from many lonely and dull nights in a bar.
Dutter's many anecdotes about the dating world were both helpful and motivational. Knowing that a fellow shy guide, armed with some proper strategies, could enter the dating world, certainly embolden me. My only suggestion is that, since the book was published before the Internet explosion, an updated version is needed with the author tackling such issues as email, instant messaging and social networking sites such as friendster, myspace and facebook.
Oh Man. Who Greenlighted this Book? It's Simply Awful........2006-02-09
While the premise is decent enough, the material and suggestions offered by the author are dreadful. Why its a mainstay in the dating section of mega bookstores is a bigger mystery than how the Steelers won the Superbowl.
Hopefully guys realize at this stage in the game that 'pickup lines,' no matter how clever or nuanced, simply don't work. Why? Because while giving you a moment's attention, most are either crude or insulting, forcing a woman to respond in a way drenched in irritation. And compliments come off trite or insincere.
Far better to engage people in social settings with a set routine that conveys all the best qualities about you.
If you're looking for great material to approach women, look elsewhere.

Entertaining read but not help at all.......2005-12-05
I read this book hoping to learn some things about getting women but come away just as inept. The book is written with humor making it an easy read but the advice is basically useless. I was also a little upset when I noticed the back cover and the very good looking author that adorns it. The guy is an adonis. He must think we're all fools to try to convice us that he's bad with girls. NO WAY! It's a slap in the face. That guy can get women without even opening his mouth because he's that good looking. I don't care how "bad" he thinks he is with girls. He can tell them he likes lunchmeat and they'll be all over him. Basically what I learned is that you get girls by being born with the skill. No amount of teachings will ever help. So I take with me the knowledge of never purchasing another "How To" book about getting girls because now I'll know better. Hope this helps.
All frosting, no cake............2005-11-03
This stuff is for desperate CHUMPS. There is nothing in here about how to get inside a woman's mind and access her deepest emotions, which is how to appeal to a woman. The saying most definitely applies here---if you do what you've always done, you will get what you've always gotten, which is, REJECTED. This book is filled to the rim with what MOST men have always done---look needy and desperate, belt out cheesy lines, and give her every indication that you are JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF THEM.
Don't even bother with this one. You will NOT find anything of even miniscule value in this jokebook.
OH MY GOD I can't believe it got published........2005-03-07
I don't even know where to begin to describe how worthless this boook is.
It's mainly a bunch of trite dribble that leaves you going "Well, duh!" I mean, this author comes across with this attitude that he has all these dating secrets figured out and he's this enlightened dating master when the fact is that this is very basic stuff that anyone with even minimal social skills has already figured out a long time ago. And if your social skills are so bad that you actually benefit from any of the advice in this book, you can pretty much forget about dating women. Well, forget about dating attractive ones, anyway.
This author writes things that are either already widely-known, worthless, or both, then has the audacity to actually go "There, now you know blah blah whatever it was." What a loser!!
Examples: this guy actually advises you to use the old "Mistaken Identity Ploy", in which you start a conversation with a girl by acting like you recognize her from somewhere. Come on!! Sure, it could work, but that's not the point. The point is I already knew that one!! Everybody does!! If you're selling a book on something, put some original material in it!!
This guy also recommends walking up behind a girl and tapping her on the shoulder. He says it sends a clear message that she's the one you're interested in. Is he serious? I can't think of anything more rude than being tapped on the shoulder, and I've seen idiots in nightclubs do it. EVERY time, the girl turns around, looks at him, realizes she's just been touched by someone she doesn't know, turns back around, and ignores him. You can bet that nothing that guy does for the rest of the night is going to get that girl talking to him.
As a bouncer, I cannot count the times I've been approached by pretty girls and asked to grab some moron by the scruff of the neck and throw him out of the club for doing most of the useless, extremely unadvisable crap in this worthless book. I don't often return books, but this one's going RIGHT back to the store RIGHT NOW.

Customer Reviews:
Good starter book for Excel.......2006-05-30
I was looking around to find a book that does a good introduction to Excel with screenshots that I wanted to suggest for a friend. This is a nice book to read and get to know Excel step by step.
The author takes you through a step by step approach with an example to create a budget excel sheet.
Pros: Very good starter book
Cons: There could have been more examples.
There is a sample chapter available on the publisher's site and example workbooks are available on the author's website.
A good beginning at using Excel.......2005-08-03
I went through this book in a morning, iBook in my lap and book on the arm of the recliner. I am converting from AppleWorks to Excel for my spreadsheet needs and found that the short length, clear screen shots, and availability of the the changing versions of the spreadsheet on the website made this very attractive to me. I feel like I have learned a lot and accomplished a lot, even though I will never make a budget spreadsheet like the example created in the book. I really liked the Mac and Windows screenshots side by side because so many Excel books only present the Windows version.
Why do I always have to have a title here?.......2005-03-13
This book is basic and very easy to follow. I would recommend it to beginners.
