Deciding on freelance teaching as a music career, Larry received his degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1979. Since graduating from college, Larry has taught over 30,000 private music lessons. An experienced blues guitarist, he played in the Gulf Coast Blues Band, wrote a Living Blues magazine column called "Blues Box," and is currently on the nominating committee for the annual W. There may be an error in the product description - I don't think Larry McCabe was involved in this book. That aside, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! Authors John McClellan and Deyan Bratic have crafted an amazing resource, featuring transcriptions ranging from Chet's earliest arrangements to his (in our opinion) best work in his final 2-CD set Chet Atkins - Solo Sessions

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, informative, and well put together........2007-03-15

If you are a Chet fan these transcriptions are a must have. Thorough and concise transcriptions of many of his lesser known pieces are included, as well as insight from the people with whom he collaborated throughout his long and versatile career. I highly reccommend Vol. 1 of this pairing as well. Buy them both, you won't be disappointed!

Book Description

This book explains the secret ingredients needed to obtain the very best tonal qualities when building acoustic string instruments. It includes an exploration of the tools and equipment needed, the methods to excite tones in the instrument, how to make the necessary changes, and how to achieve consistency and repeatability. The text focuses on tap tuning as it relates to mandolins, guitars, banjos, violins, ukuleles, dulcimers, pianos, and more. The DVD includes demonstrations of the acoustic phenomena described in the text.

3 out of 5 stars black art?.......2007-09-28

After much research and consultation with professional guitar and violin makers, I have concluded that the jury is still out on the benefits of tap tuning for guitar making. One issue is that, unlike the violin world (where there is an acknoweldged standard and good physics for excellent tone) no such standard exists in the guitar world. Indeed, different guitars are supposed to sound different and excellent tone is highly subjective. Some builders I know use tap tuning or other complex methods to try for tonal perfection, others simply tap the plates and listen for a "good" tone. I am not convinced the hair-raising complexity and expensive equipment needed to use Siminoff's method are worth while. Besides, whatever resonant frequencies the components have seperately change completely once the guitar is glued together.

World class guitarist Ed Gerhard made a CD (House of Guitars) on which he used a bunch of junky guitars bought at pawn shops and discount outlets. He didn't even change the strings. Yet the sounds are gorgeous. I think this proves that the skill of the perfomer (given a bascially sound guitar) totally overwhelms whatever contributions high tech plate tuning methods make.

4 out of 5 stars Must Have for Luthiers.......2007-08-24

Another great book for luthiers by Mr. Siminoff. It's a bit techy, but if you want to build great guitars (or any other acoustic stringed instrument), this is the stuff you need to go to the next level. The book will dispel the idea that tap tuning is a "black art" that only the gifted can practice, and put it squarely in the realm of possibility.

4 out of 5 stars Musical instrument construction.......2007-01-20

Good for those of us who build but for whom the application of tap tuning is largely a mystery. Good science foundation by a proven master of the technique.

5 out of 5 stars The "magic" explained........2007-01-16

This tutorial is a great resource for anyone who has ever had less than optimal results building a musical instrument. The "magic" of getting the best sound possible out of an instrument is explained in simple, easy to follow (and easy to repeat) steps. I wish I'd had this information many years ago. Even if you're not a builder, this book explains many things about how instruments "work". I would recommend this volume to anyone interested in understanding how the various parts of an instrument work together, to produce what we hear. This book will undoubtedly have a very positive impact on many instruments over the coming years. Well done Mr. Siminoff!

    2 out of 5 stars TOO SPECIFIC!.......2005-04-28

I bought this book thinking it would be a great coffee-table book for my theatrical home. I even thought I could use it for trivia games with my theatre students. But it only focuses on 10 movies - one for each chapter. And the trivia questions are for people who are obsessed with that particular film. I was hoping for a book full of fun, random questions about a wide array of movie musicals, but this book is not that. However, if you've watched Wizard of Oz 50 times, this would be the perfect book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Review from 4 Front Magazine, Vol. 1, No. 19 May 1996.......1998-05-10

It's here. The perfect gift book for anyone who likes a good movie musical. This isn't the weird, obscure, only-a-show-queen-would-know stage musical or the fluff "name the year of blah blah blah" trivia. This is complete coverage; from stats through awards, to fun dirt on ten of everyone's favorite movies. Kurtti just picked his personal favorites to delve into, but who doesn't love "Mary Poppins" and want to know more?

The trivia begins with the MGM Musicals of "The Wizard of Oz" and "Singin' in the Rain" and covers the spectrum from "My Fair Lady" to "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," to "Hello, Dolly!" and even to the animated "Beauty and the Beast." Each of the ten musicals has questions divided into three categories. The easiest questions are about the story and the characters, followed by the medium, not so easy questions, concerning actors, artists, and others. Finally, the hard category, with no easy stuff, Kurtti appropriately labels the minutia and obscuria. While the book is set up to be read as simple Q and A, the fun comes with Jeff's researched follow-up stories after the answer. The questions are used as springboards to delicious little secrets about stars, sets, Munchkins, and mistakes. An example of a brief but interesting medium rated question and answer for "The Wizard of Oz," reads as follows:

Q: Who was originally cast as the Wicked Witch? A: An early casting memo shows both Edna Mae Oliver and Fanny Brice as potential "witches" (their ethical orientation is not discussed, wicked or otherwise, but it's not hard to guess the casting). Finally, on August 20, 1938, Gale Sondergaard was announced for the role-a beautiful villain in the style of the evil queen in Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (q.v.) She did tests for the picture during the last weeks of September 1938, but left by mutual agreement with the producers in early October,! when it was decided that the beautiful witch was not acceptable and attempts to hide Sondergaard's beauty in "ugly" make-up seemed ridiculous. The next year she would have the part of Tylette the Cat in "The Blue Bird."

The stories range from brief paragraphs to full pages of bizarre information that Kurtti has uncovered through years of curious collecting and inside information at major studios. The book ignores all the obvious and targets the truly tasty fresh facts one can't resist. Juice combined with Jeff's witty personal commentary, make the book a great summer dessert sprinkled with photographs. This becomes the only drawback of the book, beginning with the colorful candy cover, it grabs you and you can't quit nibbling.

This movie musical trivia book has a delightful introduction by Shirley Jones, who sums up the book nicely: "If you're a fan of the celluloid musical, got ready you are about to have one terrific time.' -- William Christopher

5 out of 5 stars Review from Show Music Magazine, Summer 1996.......1998-05-10

Jeff Kurtti's "The Great Movie Musical Trivia Book" perhaps surprisingly doesn't include "The Sound of Music," but does feature chapters about "The Wizard of Oz," "Singin' in the Rain," "Guys and Dolls," "My Fair Lady," "Mary Poppins," "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "The Music Man," "Hello, Dolly!," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," and "Beauty and the Beast," each a classic in its own right.

Each chapter opens with brief paragraphs about the featured film, followed by three difficulty levels of questions and answers. Kurtti deserves credit for not making the first level, "The Easy Stuff," either condescending or too easy, such as the "Mary Poppins" question, "Who 'gets stuck with the children with no nanny in the 'ouse!'," The answer (no, I'm not going to tell) includes a career rundown of the performer who played the character that made the statement in the film, imparting information beyond just answering the question. "Not So Easy" and "No Easy Stuff" questions test the reader's knowledge, such as who was the associate producer of "Hello, Dolly!" and who is the famous father of the animator of The Beast. These too lead into mini-essays, providing interesting facts with which trivia buffs will be able to astound their friends. Each chapter includes an assortment of photos related to the film covered, and concludes with its screen credits. Highly entertaining, the book may well provide new information even for those who think they already know all the answers.

This is another excellent songbook published by Hal Leonard, featuring 54 songs from Hollywood's 54 greatest musicals. In addition to the piano notation, the vocal and guitar chords are also supplied.

All the best songs from the greatest musicals by Movieland's greatest songwriters : from "Our Love is Here to Stay" (Gershwin) , "They Can't take That Away from Me" (Berlin), "You do something to me" (Porter) straight down the musical path to Kander & Ebb's "Money,Money" from 'Cabaret'.

This book is a jazz pianist and vocalist's dream, but you'll also get hours of entertainment from it if you just love showtunes.

As noted in the description and other reviews this is an older product and may not be an easy install for Windows XP since it was originally made for Win 95/98. If you're technically inclined it's very likely you'll get it to work, but one of our purchasers said they couldn't install it on XP (we haven't tried that). That said it seems to be well liked and does have some nice features that make it sort of unique.

4 out of 5 stars The Enterprise, inside and out.......2005-07-12

Basically an interactive CD-ROM version of the hardcopy (trade paperback) edition written by ST:TNG designers Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda with a few extras, the Enterprise-D Interactive Technical Manual is definitely a must-have addition for the NextGen tech head with a PC, a CD-ROM drive, and a Windows 95 or newer OS. Although it's several years old, I enjoy looking through the info compiled in this disk from time to time.

One big advantage that the CD-ROM version has over the hardcopy is that you can actually 'tour' the ship, and look in several different areas, including engineering, bridge, and crew quarters. You can either do this on your own or have Number One lead the way. I usually prefer the Riker tour myself, although his little anecdotes and remembrances get a bit too maudlin and sentimental at times. Methinks Number One may be a bit TOO attached to the Enterprise!

My only problem with the Interactive Tech Manual is that parts of it depict some fairly complex concepts about how the starship's doohickeys work. Although none of stuff inside this CD-ROM approaches the complexity of, say, quantum physics equations, it can sometimes be a bit too daunting for the Star Trek layman to enjoy. So if you're not really big on the technical aspects and jargonese that makes up NextGen technobabble, this item probably won't be your cup of tea. As for myself, I've just managed to synthesize some tritanium, and am now starting work on the warp core articulation frame. If I follow the specs in the Interactive Tech Manual to the letter, and put in all my free time on the project, I'll have my own Enterprise-D up and ready to go by the twenty-fifth century. Just in time for it to be obsolete! Heh...

I agree with the other reviewer. This CD was released in 1994 and pixelated, but still holds up well. Recorded in 640x480x256 colors, this CD allows you to explore the Next Generation Enterprise through digitized Quicktime videos, pictures, and voice-overs from Majel-Barrett-Roddenberry (computer/Troi's mother) and Jonathon Frakes (Commander Riker). In addition it includes hundreds of pages describing the history, technology, and behind-the-scenes info about the show! Worth buying if you're a Trekkie/Trekker.

                5 out of 5 stars Impressive..........2000-10-02

The views inside all the major sets were spectacular. Why hasn't the 360degree technology been used on something similar for Voyager or DS9 - it's just brilliant!. Combined with the technical manual book as well as the later blueprints, the Enterprise-D really lives! Well done.

You can start learning Windows XP right from here.. This book really lead you step-by-step to the top of exploring Windows XP. The Interactive CD is a very helpfull attachement, made by very down-to-earth language, NO TECHNICAL statements, all what you hear is written on the left pane. I do have the desire to purchase the whole groub of Customguide Traning Courses starting Windows XP Personal Trainer, and now I booked Word and Access, after I will take PowerPoint, Outlook, Project and Computer Basics. One by one, this will help to read every course slowly and be a power user of Microsoft Office Family.

If you are looking at becoming a certified network engineer, then this book is not for you.
If you are someone who is quite familiar with Windows but want to learn how to do a lot of the cool things you hear about, then this is the book for you. I've searched around a lot, and this is the only easy to understand Windows book that talks about Wi-Fi.
There is also a really cool chapter about multimedia.
The feature that makes this book the most unique is the interactive CD ROM that comes with it.
My mom is the most computer illiterate person in the world so I gave her the CD that came with the book.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for the right audience..........2005-01-16

O'Reilly has a series of books by CustomGuide called the Personal Trainer series. I had the chance to review the Windows XP Personal Trainer volume, and given the right audience, it's pretty good...

Chapter List: The Fundamentals; Working with a Window; Working with a Windows Program; Working with Files and Folders; Customizing the Taskbar and Desktop; Customizing Windows; The Free Programs; Working with Pictures and Multimedia; Optimizing and Maintaining Your Computer; Exploring the Internet; Passwords, Logons, and User Accounts; Networking with Windows XP; Setting Up a Network; Index

The Personal Trainer series uses a comic book superhero motif in the design. In some of the other titles, the theme plays out a little more strongly. Once you get past the cover on this book, you probably won't even notice it. Each chapter has a series of lessons that cover material related to the topic. Each lesson is well illustrated and broken down into a step-by-step process. To wrap up the lesson, there's a "quick reference" sidebar that recaps the particular command that was just covered. The entire chapter wraps up with a summary, a quiz (yes, there are answers provided!), and some "homework" to stretch your understanding a bit. Very readable and non-intimidating...

Now, I mentioned the "right audience" to open the review. This isn't the type of book that you'd give to an IT professional or long-time computer user. The material starts with some fundamental Windows basics, and builds from there. If you've been using computers for years, you'll know this stuff anyway. But think about your parents who just got a computer for the first time. Think about your kid who just got his first computer. This is the type of book that a computer neophyte could open up and not be scared off within five minutes. And even if they've conquered the basics already, the material on multimedia and setting up a home network may be information they've never ventured into.

If you're looking for an entry level book on Windows XP for someone who needs to learn the fundamentals, I'd suggest taking a look at this one. It could work out well for them...

                4 out of 5 stars Serious contents.......2004-12-13

O'Reilly has been experimenting with several series of books. Most in a sombre, serious format. But we also has the vivid Personal Trainer series, which includes this book on XP. It's targeting a new user. New to both XP and computers in general.

So there is a lot of attention paid to basic operations in any operating system with a GUI. Like opening, moving, resizing and closing a window. And how to graphically navigate through the filesystem, using the metaphor of folders.

Experienced users will have internalised this a long time ago, as automatic. But it's important to realise that it is not so obvious to new users. You have to start somewhere. The book is suitable as a guide to the XP newcomer. Oh, as for the cartoon aspect of the cover. It really isn't used inside to any great extent. (As contrasted to the Head First series.) In spite of the cover, the contents have a serious demeanour.
