Makes a great stocking stuffer for the holidays!.......2006-11-04

Learn that you can do more with an iPod(tm) Shuffle than just uploading songs and listening randomly. If you have a Shuffle, you might want to start with this little 90 page soft-bound book. It is compact (5.9 x 6") and beautifully designed. There are all color images or screenshots on almost every page. One feature that I found very handy was the color coded chapter tags on the left hand side of the pages. On the right side listed the chapter you were in making finding things easier.The red part of the cover is actually a separate piece and I found myself using the ends as a bookmark. No big deal but nonetheless a useful feature.

The book handles all the basics in an easy to understand manner. The chapters range from getting started, all about iTunes, playlists, using your Shuffle as a Pocket USB Drive, cool stuff for your Shuffle and Troubleshooting. Extras include how to make CD covers in iTunes, burning playlists to CD or DVD, making celebrity (or different moods) playlists, and publishing your own playlists in iMix in iTunes.

You do receive a little 29 page (paper) User Guide with your Shuffle that walks you through the basics quite adequately but if you want to know and do more, then this inexpensive iPod Shuffle Fan Book is for you. The chapter on iTunes and the music store was very comprehensive, as was the listing of Apple's and various other web sites about iPods. It gives a new owner a good place to start. I was totally blown away at the power in the little Shuffle. I was equally impressed with this little book. Many aspects of the book will still be relevant if you upgrade to a Nano or larger iPod. Buy the book...it's cheap at $9.95 and makes good quick reading so you don't have to wade through pages and pages to get an answer. Information is presented in a comprehensive and fun manner! I recommend it heartily.

I've owned the iPod Shuffle for about a year, and find it's the best model for people who want to use their iPods while they jog or work out. It has enough memory (even at the low 1/2 gig end) to store a days worth of music, and can either play songs in order or do the whole shuffle random thing. Controls are very intuitive, and it's easy to operate. This book is great for people who need instructions. The actual manual that comes with the Shuffle is short and not too in-depth, and this book is a good replacement for new Shuffle users who are unfamiliar with the product. But people looking for some "Shuffle secrets" like how to jump to the beginning or end of a playlist by a couple of button moves won't find these hacks here. That's my only gripe. The book is cheap, cute, but really doesn't go in to the secret world of all the little tricks this thing can do. You'll have to search the Web for that part.

A lot, with suggestions from this little book published by O'Reilly Media. Suggestions for third-party hardware, freeware and shareware programs to make the most of the iPod, and a lot more. At $14.95, this is the basic book for iPod users to have on their bookshelf.

Great little book!.......2005-05-14

I'm kind of on a mission to read all of the iPod books, seeing as how I'm enjoying the heck out of playing with my iPod. Just finished reading this one, and I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised.

At first glance, I wasn't too optimistic. I mean, how could anything this small cover things that weren't covered in the other books and in more detail? Boy, was I surprised in the value I found here.

While I wouldn't recommend it as a start to finish manual for the iPod, it was a terrific addendum to whatever you might choose as your full manual. Full of great little tidbits of info and tips on how to do lots of very fun and useful iPod tricks. Plus, it sourced several software tools that the other books seem to have missed.

I would definitely recommend this book. Just don't expect it to be the ultimate manual on everything you can do with an iPod or with full and detailed instructions for everything. It does make some assumptions that you have at least some experience with an iPod. However, once you have gotten the basics, this book can definitely help you to expand your usage of the iPod.

This very nice looking book, very well done content. There's a few tips and tricks for experienced users.

But for the most part, this is a great book for a replacement manual. The included "manual" that comes with the iPod is pretty lacking, and this would be a great additional purchase for your first iPod.

If I were to buy my techno-phobe mom an iPod, I'd also buy this book to go along with it, and she'd be teaching me things in days.

A little more style than substance in this good book.......2005-03-07

The first impression you get of O'Reillys iPod Fan Book is of the packaging. A small volume (about the same height as the iPod and twice the width) it comes with a half-height wrap that has the title and author on the front and the bar code, price and a short contents on the back. Take this off and you have a full-size cover with all the simple elegance of the white iPod itself. The front features the wheel of a 4G iPod and the back has just the Apple logo and "iPod" in Apple's distinctive typeface below it. Remove this second cover and you have a book with a simple design of grey with a white border, the back is blank and the front has the title and the subtitle "Go everywhere with iPod" in small type.

This concentration on design flows through the rest of the book. It is visually stunning; at the same time, effort has been made to make the design useful. The pages are visually tabbed to make it easy to navigate the seven chapters. Each chapter is tabbed in a different color reflected through use of that color within the chapter. Full color pictures and screen dumps add to the legibility and usability of the book.

This book is also full of useful information for the newcomer to the iPod. A small amount is covered in the documentation you get with the iPod, but a great deal is not. Apart from a useful chapter on accessories, the book focuses on methods of getting the best from an iPod and how to organise your music.

To sum up this book: it is a little more style than substance and falls short of being the ideal book for all newcomers to the iPod (and even less for experienced users). On the other hand, the style makes the information that is provided readily accessible for all. I'd say this is the perfect companion to an iPod for a teen-age girl and if my 12-year-old daughter was getting the mini she has been hinting for, a copy of this would be included. (I expect that anyone who spent more than ten minutes deciding on the colour of their mini would probably love the elegance and style of this thin volume.) The low price makes it a great impulse buy or stocking stuffer.

Ipodesque Design is Perfect.......2004-11-27

Apple claims to have sold more than 6 million iPods to date and based on its trademark ease of use, 6 million is surely just the beginning. This cute, little book is a perfect companion to the phenomenon in that it presents a wealth of iPod information from downloading and ripping songs to managing playlists and much more all in the same funky Mac/iPoddy style that will appeal to users. Its tabby, buttonny page layouts are perfectly in sync with the design of the product it's describing. If you're buying somebody an iPod as a gift, this would be a perfect additional "throw-in" to introduce them to the "iPod lifestyle" as well.

Cute Story.......2007-07-26

This is a very cute story about a frog who wants to "feel like" a prince. He tries to convince various animals to kiss him, and they each tell him no in a way that imitates their sound and makes it fun to read. For example, the cow says "Who? You? No! Go!". There are only two questionable things for young children. In one passage, the frog calls one of the animals a "spoilsport". It rhymes, but models name calling. We read it in a playful way and it isn't that bad. Then the snake tries to bite the frog saying, "take this!". He misses, but it is a bit of a violent reaction to a request for a kiss from a playful frog. Near the end of the book, a princess makes the leap that the frog will 'become' a prince, and kisses him several times. When she laments that he hasn't become a prince, the frog says, "No, but I FEEL like a prince!". It's a joke that is totally lost on my 4 year old, but she still loves the book.

I just ordered a copy of 'Snog' last week, and to say the least, even before 'reading' it I wondered just what I was getting myself into. At first glance you too may wonder So, is this like a tamer version of Madonna's 1992 book Sex?

Perhaps. Rankin's introduction gives us as readers words of wisdom regarding snogging ("Snogging is not low brow...snogging is innocent..erotic...expressive. Something like that.) which I loved. At first looking through the photos here might make the reader feel something of a voyeur, but as the book goes on and the reader sees snogs from young and old, friends and lovers, the intimacy of the snog is revealed in a manner that only this book can portray.

Surely you remember what it was like. Let this book help you to more fully appreciate the innocence, expressiveness, affection and intimacy of snogging.

Preparing for the practical portion of the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) examination, in which you have to configure and troubleshoot networks on Cisco equipment in a testing lab, can be scary. There's simply so much the test proctor can throw at you, and you have to be prepared for it all. CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I does a fantastic job of preparing you for much of what you can expect to see on the first day of your CCIE lab exam (when you build a system to specifications). Karl Solie, a CCIE himself, first approaches each subject on the CCIE syllabus with a quick academic overview ("Here's what frame relay is for," for instance, "and here's how Cisco equipment thinks of it"). That gives way to a series of examples ("Here's a typical set of customer requirements, and here are the IOS commands and configuration files that satisfy them"). Finally, a series of subject-specific lab exercises (which are shorter than a typical day-long CCIE assignment) drill you on the Cisco skills related to the technology at hand. Solie explains how he'd solve the lab--in wonderful detail--immediately after the pages that describe these small lab tasks.

At the end of the book, you'll find five full-scale CCIE labs, very similar to the ones you'll have to complete in 8.5 hours on test day. There are instructions on how to prestage your equipment (as the exam proctor would normally do), and what you need to accomplish. You can time yourself on these labs and get a very good idea of your preparedness. Solie could make the next edition of this book better by devoting even more discussion to the troubleshooting techniques appropriate to different kinds of systems. Problems inevitably crop up in CCIE configurations, and there's rarely time to start over in the lab. A great resource - but use with MUCH caution!.......2006-02-03

CiscoPress's "CCIE Practical Studies - Volume 1" by Solie is a difficult book to assess. On one hand, the book does an excellent job at covering half of the topics that you will see on the CCIE lab at the time of the book's printing. On the other hand, the book is riddled with errors. Every page, almost every config needs to be examined, reexamined and then, perhaps, discussed on GroupStudy to verify. It is hard to trust such a book but at the same time impossible to ignore.

Some of the typos/editorial mistakes are:
* Page 344 - For Cisco LMI " LMI status information is sent on DLCI 0." Not true - Cisco LMI is sent on 1023. And then the opposite with ANSI LMI right below Cisco LMI.
* Page 518 - 2nd paragraph - "...snapshot routing can be used only with link-state protocols..." Not true - snapshot routing is used only with distance-vector protocols (like RIP).
* Page 705 - 1st line - "For autosummarization to work properly, discontinuous subnets..." I believe the proper term is discontiguous.
* Page 776 - When discussing what must match for an OSPF neighbor relationship to form, the book is missing that the stub area flag and MTU must also match.
* Between 937 & 939 - completely ignore how they document NetBios and SNAP SAPs. This error is repeated throughout the book but can be verified on Cisco's website.

And so on... But have written this, I will be surprised if many CCIE candidates don't have this book on their shelf. Chapter 2, on LAN protocols is very good (and not document elsewhere). Also, the chapter on ISDN is both of use in the lab and a good tool to use in the real world.

A must read for CCIE lab candidates.......2005-10-15

This book is a very good source of information for setting up practice internet works for the CCIE hands on lab. I went into it as a possible study source for the written portion of the exam. I was able to glean some useful information from it but nothing I couldn't find in other books. It will definitely come in handy when I start setting up test equipment for the lab.

The material is presented in a very understandable format. I especially liked the fact that the practice labs were grouped by technology. Starting with the basics, in chapter one, it builds up steam as it progresses through the different technologies. Each chapter provides a background and a lot of helpful information on how to accomplish the lab scenario. There are also pertinent troubleshooting commands when things just don't go the way they should. After each lab scenario the author provides a walkthrough of how to accomplish the lab.

All this reading, lab setups and practice labs culminate in chapter 18. Chapter 18 is a series of labs that a CCIE candidate might face in the actual live CCIE lab. Each of the 5 labs goes over an equipment list, a pre-staging section then followed by the rules and the timed section. Answers are not provided for these labs but a link to a CiscoPress website is provided for you to check your work.

I compared these labs with other lab workbooks on the internet and found that there is not much difference between the lab scenarios. Whereas the workbooks have close to 30 labs they can cost up to several hundred dollars. The labs to be found in CCIE Practical Studies Vols I & II will cost you much less and most likely get you to the same level of competence to attempt the live CCIE lab.

While some of the material is dated, in reference to the current lab exam, it still is a helpful reference guide. Hopefully it will be updated to bring it more inline with the current exam and emerging technology, like the upcoming Routing TCP/IP book

An absolute Star outstanding.......2004-01-20

This is an outstanding book. In fact the part 2 is also a winner. The examples and the explanations are outstanding. This book and together with the part 2 is an art by itself . I think some of the materials are from Cisco website but yet the explanations are very down to earth and well written. I consider Jeff and Karl to be my Gurus and hope I will meet them some day.

OK book, but very lacking in detail..........2003-12-05

I got my CCIE a few years ago, so when asked I reviewed this book at the request of co-workers for content and validity. I was not impressed, as there are too many errors and verbose language. The book is OK to use as a rough guide, but I suggest if you buy this book you better also look at buying a few other books to fill in all the gaps. I think this book can assist in Lab Preparation, but you will need so much more...

Solie's book is a standard for CCIE prep. Like all technical books, this one is not perfect either, but they do publish corrections and do provide configuration solutions on ciscopress.com.
