Book Description

Every day, thousands of forward-thinking Christians are making a difference in eternity by being relevant to their culture. Their kind has been called "roaring lambs," those who infiltrate and impact their world with their faith. We call them relevant.

I AM RELEVANT profiles a wide range of people ages 18-34 who in some way break the walls of tradition in fulfilling the Great Commission. You'll find a profile of a famous rock star; flip the page and read about a prize-winning cage fighter, an environmentalist or an MTV staffer. Each story is a statement of faith and a testimony of grace. These people are making a difference, and this book shares their stories. In its pages, you'll find inspiration to make your own.

Book Description

If you ever thought there must be better ways of organizing society, or capturing the innate creativity of citizens, then this is the book for you! An encyclopedia like no other, The World's Greatest Ideas is the most exciting collection of schemes, plans and proposals you'll ever come across.

The ideas come from world experts, inspired amateurs, and from the world's press. Practical, brilliant, quirky, and inspired, they are social innovations-new and imaginative ways of tackling social problems or improving the quality of life-collected by the Institute for Social Inventions. The Institute has acted as an International Suggestions Box, gathering ideas from ordinary people around the world since 1985 through its network of correspondents and members, and through its Global Ideas Bank on the web which gets over three million hits a year.

Here you'll find ideas for the future - today. Ammunition for dinner party conversations. For example:
a "gender tax" to pay for male crime;
allowing only golf buggies in inner cities;
woodland burials;
making proper energy behavior a kindergarten social skill; or
ensuring an adequate intake of Vitamin T-the tribal vitamin

A tribute to the fertility of human imagination, this book will interest anyone with an inventive flair-from students in all the fields from life to death that the book covers, to armchair readers who like to be titillated by the new, the unusual, and even the occasionally weird.

5 out of 5 stars I'm the first?!?.......2002-10-19

I just knew someone had beat me to the punch in reviewing this book.

Check this out. Are you interested in taking over the world one block at a time? Are you interested in thinking out of the box in doing so (no pablum like "we need to start our own businesses" or "we need to elect people we really really trust")?

Pick this book up. Trust me. I'm willing to bet that there is at least ONE social invention in this book that would change your life if you just tried it with a few friends.

For quick, reliable coverage of women's issues in developing countries, here is a concise reference work written by a team of more than 80 international experts. The Encyclopedia comprises 68 essays that cover the entire Third World, from Africa to Asia, from the Near East to South and Central America, from the South Pacific to the Caribbean. The women authors are acknowledged experts from Harvard University, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the University of Nairobi, the International Labor Organization, and other institutions, who summarize the most recent scholarship on a wide range of important subjects. Thoroughly indexed and cross-referenced, the Encyclopedia is an ideal starting point for in-depth research in such areas as:
recent developments in the prevention of violence against women * the conditions of women's lives across regions and countries * women's participation in government, science, and technology * hidden curriculum issues in higher education * an overview of women's experiences as small-scale entrepreneurs

A feminist viewpoint enhances the coverage
Informed throughout by a feminist perspective, the Encyclopedia focuses on traditional women's concerns, such as political participation, human rights, nutrition, housework, the family, equality, health, and more. But the coverage also extends to such issues as domestic and sexual violence, creation of women-friendly cities, patriarchal ideologies as religious beliefs, the needs of older women, new jobs and exploitation in industrial production, AIDS, the gender consequences of ecological devastation, movements for change, and other areas of increasing awareness. Geographical entries cover all the major regions and countries and discuss conditions and issues in each area.

Spotlights the newest and best sources
The Encyclopedia brings together information that has been widely scattered in sources from many disciplines. An introduction by the editor illuminates the most important issues faced by Third World women today and analyzes the drastically changed global situation and how the changes impacted on the material presented in the Encyclopedia.

    Book Description

This revised edition of A First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy offers the common core of knowledge children should have by the end of grade school. E. D. Hirsch, author of the best-selling Cultural Literacy and co-author of The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, has updated his popular children's version for a generation that needs not only a solid grounding in the arts and sciences but a clear understanding of the world around them - from world geography to the World Wide Web. Inviting and informative, the book is organized by subject, including mythology, history, religion and philosophy, music, art, geography, medicine, technology, and many more. No other book gives children so much of the world, from ancient history to current technology, in one engaging volume.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't get past page 52.......2002-09-30

I had hoped to give this book to my 11-year old daughter to use as a jumping-off point for many of the subjects we would be studying in our home school. I decided to review it myself first and was surprised to find on page 52 that Mr. Hirsch credits Harriet Beecher Stowe instead of Julia Ward Howe with writing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Instead of continuing through the book with a red pencil, I decided to throw it away and start somewhere else.

1 out of 5 stars Errors of fact to a point of comedy.......2001-11-20

Serious students -- even young ones -- will find laughable errors in this poorly edited reference. Three examples follow:

My fifth grade students, who routinely measure angles in radians to solve school problems, were amused that, on page 185, the author insists that "angles are always measured in degrees."

In science class, the students learned (on page 214) that plants and animals are different organisms. Then, they learned (same page) that "a carnivor is an animal that..." and immediately found a highlighted section that says "Some plants, such as the Venus flytrap, are carnivors." This cracked up the kids who have just had an introduction to simple logic.

Our favorite lesson came when the author taught us that light travels much farther in a minute than it does in a year! This we learned by comparing page 202 ("A light year is the distance light travels in a year, about six million miles.") with page 205 ("Light travels at about 186,000 miles per second..."). It didn't take the smartest fifth-grader to multiply 186,000 by 60 and report that light travels more than eleven million miles in a minute, but only six million miles in an E.D. Hirsch year (page 202).

In fact, other errors abound, and the main use of this book in my classes has been to warn youngsters that "it ain't necessarily so" and to fuel our running contest to see who can find other errors in "What Children Need to Know."

5 out of 5 stars Praise and glory be to E.D. Hirsch.......2001-10-10

Before E.D. Hirsch came along we were wallowing in the dark wasteland of ignorance. The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy is somewhat of a Bible to me and my kinfolk. When ever I need practical help I can always turn to Hirsch's words of wisdom and they guide me towards the essential truths...
Basically this is everything you need to know and everything your child needs to know all together in one book. In fact, you can throw away every book you've ever read- this has EVERYTHING. Forget anything else you've ever read, that isn't important.
The world according to E.D. Hirsch is the world according to me.
Hopefully public educators will see E.D. Hirsch for the visionary genius that he is and force all children to follow his path to higher wisdom.

4 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Cultural Literacy is quick reference for all.......2001-04-28

As an "over-fifty" college graduate with occasional lapses (or suspicions of such lapses)the children's version of E.D.Hirsch, Jr.'s A FIRST DICTIONARY OF CULTURAL LITERACY is an excellent reference to confirm facts quickly and accurately. It is not a substitute for encyclopedias or scholarly references but does fairly accurately and succinctly confirm facts that comprise a fund of knowledge common to all Americans. Although it was originally purchased for use by our elementary age children, it is a reference that I turn to for quick confirmation.

    1 out of 5 stars Opinionated Propaganda!.......1999-09-07

This book promulgates disinformation about the "separation of church and state". On page 340, this ideology is defined as "required by the first Amendment to the United States Constitution". This idea of "separation" was a quote from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson regarding a single denomination and is taken out of context when applied to school issues of prayer, etc. Nowhere does the constitution refer to any such mandate. What is more disgraceful, the co-author, Joseph F. Kent is a professor of History. come on, professor, do your homework - try reading the constitution for once.

          Book Description

This volume provides information on the history and operation of major foundations located outside the United States. Unlike statistical directories covering foreign foundations, this book treats the most important foundations in thirty-one different countries and provides historical essays often written by the respective officers themselves. As one of the very few book-length accounts of international foundations in English, the volume offers not only essential data on individual organizations, but a platform for comparing the structure and function of various foundations as well. The book is made up of 146 historical sketches of the most significant foundations in thirty-one countries, categorized by type as independent, corporation-sponsored, community, or operating. Approximately half of the sketches were provided by persons within the foundations, while the remaining ones were derived from histories and reports, correspondence, interviews, and other research. Each sketch contains basic information on the founding, purpose, activities, financing, governance, and location of a foundation, to the extent that it was available. Also included are three appendices, which provide topical and chronological listings of the institutions. In addition, bibliographical references to sources utilized and references for further reading are supplied at the end of each sketch. The volume will be a valuable reference source for foundations throughout the world, government agencies and college and university administrators, and public and academic libraries. It will also be relevant to courses in the history of philanthropy and intellectual and social history.

This is a specialist collection of considerable depth which documents the theoretical, methodological and substantive developments in the sociological study of education into the next century.

The International Encyclopedia of Sociology of Education is recommended reading for students, teachers and academics, researchers and policy makers within the field of sociology of education as well as scholars from outside the field. The Encyclopedia not only provides and informative introduction to the aspects of sociology that seriously influence education, but the content of the entries and the extensive bibliographies also make the Encyclopedia essential reading for scholars already well versed in these fields.

                  Book Description

Al-Jazeera, the independent, all-Arab television news network based in Qatar, has emerged as a political player in the events following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and the ensuing war being waged in Afghanistan. More than an agency reporting the news as it happens, Al-Jazeera (Arabic for "the island") has access to the Arab World and is "scooping" the western media conglomerates. It has emerged as a political actor on the world stage with its exclusive access to Osama Bin Laden and members of the Taliban. Its reputation is burnishing quickly through its daily exposure on CNN in the U.S., even as it strives to maintain its independence as an international free press news network.

The objective of this book is to shed light on the background of the Al-Jazeera network, how it started, how it operates, the kinds of programs it broadcasts, its effects on Arab viewers, the reactions of the West and Arab states, and its implications for the future of news broadcasting in the Middle East and its struggle for public opinion in the Arab world.

5 out of 5 stars It is not easy.......2006-10-19

Al Jazeera is giving us a vivid and moving picture of a New Arab World in the making. There is no way to go back in times. This media channel is succeeding to keep one step ahead of many others advancing, foreign or local, TVs.
Live transmissions are notably courageous in their way struggling so hard to persuade local (and influential) governments to let them work into the `heart' of the stories being anchored, against the background of petty local political bickering and futility.
It is not easy, but the beauty about it is that it is also challenging, and a source of pride to millions of Arabs

                  5 out of 5 stars Very enlightening.......2003-01-25

Al-Jazeera is the all-Arabic TV news channel which burst on to the international scene in the wake of September 11 and the war in Afghanistan. Its unfettered access to that country during the war and its showing of the bin Laden tapes made it an automatic force on the world stage.Based in the Gulf state of Qatar, it came from the remnants of the BBC Arabic TV service. With the help of startup money from the Emir of Qatar, Al-Jazeera was to have complete editorial independence. In a part of the world where the press is usually government controlled, Al-Jazeera is not afraid to get specific and name names. At one time or another, it has been criticized or condemned by seemingly every government in the Arab world, for broadcasting things that the local government would prefer not be broadcast. Every local editorial of condemnation and every denial of press credentials to Al-Jazeera reporters just increases its audience all over the world by satellite. One of the things that Al-Jazeera is most known for is its talk shows, especially a nightly, two-hour show called The Opposite Direction. Two guests appear on the show, with totally opposite opinions on a certain issue, and with help from live phone calls, the sparks fly. Even by American TV standards, things get pretty loud and lively. Arab governments have noticed, and have begun imitating the format on their tame and boring government TV channels.Even though Al-Jazeera is an Arab TV channel, it has tried very hard to be impartial, hosting members of the Bush Administration, after September 11, and government officials from Israel. For those who want to decide for themselves if Al-Jazeera is a legitimate news broadcaster or a terrorist mouthpiece, this book is highly recommended. It's comprehensive, clearly written and is quite enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars Raving Reviews Accurate.......2002-09-10

All the reviews I've read for this book have been unequivocally complimentary. One newspaper said it should be required reading for Bush's entire cabinet! Quite bold, but rightly so. After reading this book, I came to the realization that everything Al-Jazeera is courageous enough to air, my own country's media is petrified of. I wonder why our government is so afraid of a democratic Arab world? While the dozens of titles coming out on the Middle East are regurgitating the same history and concepts, this book is a refreshing new look at a MODERN Middle East, not a primitive and orientalized one.

5 out of 5 stars A modern, independent, entirely Arab television news network.......2002-06-06

Collaboratively written by Egyptian born Middle East journalist Mohammed El-Nawawy and Middle East media expert Adel Iskandar, Al-Jazeera: How The Free Arab News Network Scooped The World And Changed The Middle East is a fascinating and informed history. This is a superbly presented account of Al-Jazeera, a modern, independent, entirely Arab television news network based in Qatar, which since the September 11 attacks, gained high profile prominence through daily exposure on CNN. This is also the compelling story of Al-Jazeera's struggle to keep its independence as an international news network, beholden to none. Overall, Al-Jazeera is an engaging, unique, detailed study of the origin of the Al-Jazeera network, its broadcasts, its effect on Arab viewers, and its struggle for a free press. Al-Jazeera is very highly recommended for Journalism Studies and Mideast Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Review from one of Al-Jazeera's audiences.......2002-05-12

This is a great book and I highly recommend it for everyone striving to know about the Arab media from an objective perspective. The book will inform you about the Arabs' struggle for freedom of speech through an unbiased Arab network that is not subject to the control of any government. The authors have succesfully portrayed the true picture of the Arab media scene through Arab eyes.

                    Book Description

Three MINDSTORMS experts have joined with the maintainer of the legOS HOWTO to produce the book that all advanced users of LEGO MINDSTORMS have been waiting for. Each author has written material based on his specialty. Dave Baum shows you how to take NQC to its limits. Ralph Hempel explains the ins and outs of pbForth. Michael Gasperi teaches you how to build numerous custom sensors with simple, systematic instructions. Luis Villa show you how (and when) to upgrade MINDSTORMS' built-in operating system to take advantage of the extra power of legOS, a complete C environment for the RCX.

Extreme MINDSTORMS: An Advanced Guide to LEGO MINDSTORMS starts with an overview of the RCX firmware and includes a whole chapter on the new RCX 2.0 firmware. Next, the book concentrates on the steps needed to build Seeker, a Light-Seeking Robot, and to program it in NQC. Later chapters extend Seeker's functionality using pbForth and legOS. The book concludes with two chapters on building both custom passive and custom powered sensors. These sensors can take LEGO MINDSTORMS to levels impossible to achieve with just the parts supplied in the box or available through normal channels.

You will not only see more NQC programming, but pbForth as well, and an excellent section on constructing your own sensors. 4 out of 5 stars Good and not too extreme.......2000-11-28

I don't know if I like the "Extreme" in the title. In many ways this book just covers the basics. In some ways I like this book better than Baum's "Defintive Guide to LEGO Mindstorms", because it's not so NQC centric. In other ways I prefer the DGLM because it had more info on structural issues. There is a knack to making good LEGO structures, and a few tips really come in handy. I would have to say that I find the DGLM more extreme as far as the variety and originality of the projects.
