THE LAST HONEST MAN.......2006-12-29
PETE SEEGER WAS MY FIRST POLITICAL HERO. HIS MUSIC RAISED MY CONSCIOUSNESS AND THAT OF MANY OTHERS OF MY GENERATION. MY UNCLE SANG WITH HIM AT FUNDRAISERS AND I MET HIM SEVERAL TIMES. AS AN ADOLESCENT I TOLD HIM ONCE I HAD ALL HIS RECORDS AND HE FROWNED AND SAID, "DON'T BUY THE RECORDS, LEARN THE SONGS, SING THEM, TEACH THEM TO YOUR FRIENDS". THAT WAS ALL HE SAID, AND I DID AND KEPT DOING IT UNTIL ARTHRITIS AND THE LOSS OF MY VOICE STOPPED ME.
I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT PETE ALTHOUGH I DISAGREE WITH MANY OF HIS VIEWS, WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS. I CANNOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES FATHOM HIS CONTINUAL BELIEF IN COMMUNISM, BUT I ALSO HAVE TO ADMIRE, GREATLY, HIS HONESTY, INTEGRITY AND ABILITY TO ALWAYS MAINTAIN HIS VALUES. IS HE A GREAT MAN? YES, WITHOUT A DOUBT, PERHAPS ONE OF OUR GREATEST EVER AND SOME OF HIS VISIONS FOR AN AMERICA OF PEACE, HARMONY AND EQUALITY SHOULD BE HONORED, NOT RIDICULED. THE BOOK IS VERY EVEN IN IT'S TREATMENT OF PETE, BOTH THE POSITIVE AND THE NEGATIVE. IT ALSO GIVES A VERY IMPORTANT IF NOT HORRIFYING LOOK AT THE HATRED, BIGOTRY AND VIOLENCE OF AMERICA THAT PETE BATTLED ALL HIS LIFE. PETE WOULD BE HORRIFIED I'M SURE TO KNOW THAT HE WAS AS MUCH AN HISTORIAN AS HE WAS ORGANIZER, AGITATOR AND PROPHET. BUT LIKE IT OR NOT HE WAS AND IS. THE BOOK SHOULD BE READ BY EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY IF ALL YOU KNOW ABOUT PETE SEEGER ARE THE RIDICULOUS STORIES PUT OUT IN THE 40'S, 50'S AND 60'S BY THOSE WHO HATED HIM.
"Make your own music, write your own books,if you want to keep your soul.".......2006-11-01
"Tell a man what he may not sing, and he is still half free, even all free,. But tell him what he MUST sing if he never wanted to sing, take up his time with it so that his true voice cannot sound even in secret--there,I have seen, is slavery."
Pete was born in 1919,started Harvard in 1936,and because it could not hold his interest,he began a lifetime of Folk Music.
There was nothing more important in his life than making music and singing his songs with other people. With his wife Toshi ,the unsung hero, always by his side and his home and family a foundation of support;Pete and his music could always be found supporting one cause or another.
This book does a marvelous job of showing that Pete fought injustice all his life;no matter whether he found it in a union hall, freedom marches in the south, cotton fields or even the government of the country he so loved.
Pete's whole life can be summed up in one song that is now known and sung all over the world and is a war cry against injustice and in support of freedom.
"If I had a hammer
I'd hammer in the morning,
I'd hammer in the evening,
All over this land.
I'd hammer out a danger,
I'd hammer out a warning,
I'd hammer out of love and between
All of my brothers
All over this land.
If I had a bell...
If I had a song...
Now I have a hammer
And I have a bell
And I have a song to sing
All over this land.
It's the hammer of justice,
It's the bell of freedom,
And a song about love between
All of my brothers
All over this land"
Dunaway writes in an easy flowing style and has done an amazing amount of research to make sense of a life that has been central to the whole Folk Music scene that took off in the 1930's and reached its peak in the 50's and 60's and in one way or another continues till today. All one has to do is to think of,hum or hear "We Shall Overcome", "This Land Is Your Land" ,"Deportees" or any of the hundreds of other songs that Pete and his fellow travellers made so popular;and you know what an impact they made on the music scene in North America and many other parts of the world.
In this book ,if you have been a fan of Pete,Woody Guthrie,Josh White,Allan Lomax,Doc Watson,Burl Ives,Bob Dylan,Mother Maybell ,The Alamacs,The Weavers,The Kingston Trio, and numerous others ;you are going to find all kinds of things that will surprise you and bring back many memories.
The book has many wonderful photos as well as the words to many songs and information behind those songs.Extensive notes on each chapter will provide sources of information that is hard to believe exists.A complete Discography lists all the Pete's recordings ,arranged chronologically and each almum lists each song therein contained.
Some time ago ,I found several copies of "Sing Out" magazine,so often mentioned in this book. These are from the 60's and a treasure trove of photos, articles, words and music to songs, and unbelievable information about and playing Folk Music.I checked and found that it is still being published and copies of old issues can still be purchased.
"Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"
Well, there are many who have left us;but many are still around;including Pete himself now 87. The music was well recorded and we are fortunate to have it ;even though it's seldom on Radio or TV. Folk Festivals still exist and mank Folk singers are still appearing at them .One of my favorites,Jackie Washington, continues to play at various venues in Hamilton,Canada.
While I'm at it,and just for the benefit of anyone who is looking for something wonderful in the Folk Music area;I would highly recommend,"The Folk Songs of North America" by Alan Lomax. It has the words, music and background to hundreds of Folk Songs. Then again, you might want to find some of the Asch recordings.I have the 4-CD set of Woody Guthrie,an absolute treasure of Folk Songs.
Thanks David, you did a wonderful job with this book.
Mr. Dunaway's Book.......2003-09-24
This biography of Pete Seeger's life is an important read in these times. It documents the way the U.S. government can treat an American citizen without regard to our Constitution's promise of freedom of thought and expression. This book is a tale of a folk singer who was imprisoned and blacklisted because of his political beliefs.
Two gifted storytellers.......2001-06-16
Mr. Dunaway's writing is giving me a feel for the 1920s, '30s, 40s, and the parts of the '50s that I don't have my own clear memories of. By telling me the story of Pete Seeger, he's also told me parts of the story of my parents' childhood. I'm half-way through my first reading of this (library) book and have decided to get my very own copy.

Book Description
"I don't make culture, I sell it" Dick Clark once remarked. Indeed, the man who reigned as host of American Bandstand for nearly four decades may not have invented rock 'n' roll, but he sold it to the American public better than anyone before or since. Before Clark, rock 'n' roll was the step child of radio--which took to playing records as a cost-saving measure after television siphoned off radios most lucrative sponsors. But it was network television--and specifically Clarks Bandstand--that ultimately legitimized what was then viewed by most adults as vulgar, low-class music, broadcasting a sanitized vision of rock 'n' roll straight into Americas living rooms five afternoons a week. Here is the first book to tell the full story of what happened in front of--and behind--the cameras on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, providing both a history of this landmark show and of the changing styles of rock 'n' roll over four decades. Based on extensive interviews with music business figures, recording stars, and Clark himself, and featuring dozens of rare or never before published photographs, this is a riveting and uncensored account of a show that managed to survive countless revolutions in popular music. Jackson describes Bandstands humble beginnings in Philadelphias blue collar south side, the sex scandal that scuttled the first host of Bandstand and enabled Clark to launch his career, the glory days when an appearance on Bandstand was one of the most prized gigs in the music business and when teenagers lined up for blocks hoping to enter the studio, and memorable Bandstand appearances by rock 'n' roll royalty from Chubby Checker and Frankie Avalon, to Jerry Lee Lewis and Jefferson Airplane, to Pink Floyd and Madonna. Here as well is a candid look at the backstage financial maneuvering that allowed Clark to launch a video and entertainment empire worth nearly $200 million dollars today. Voted Most Likely To Sell The Brooklyn Bridge by his high school classmates, Clark emerges as a cunning business impresario determined to make millions. Readers learn how Clark decided which eager young singers would appear on the show, how he managed to survive a 1959 Congressional payola investigation that destroyed the careers of many other popular disc jockeys, how much money he earned from his personal financial investments in many of the songs played on Bandstand, and his importance to ABC in its fledgling days as a national television network. As entertaining as it is eye-opening, Dick Clark's American Bandstand will bring back a flood of memories to everyone who lived through that era. It will fascinate everyone interested in popular American culture or in rock 'n' roll history.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive historical and critical study of Bandstand.......2006-05-14
Jackson's book is published by a top-flight academic press, and that should warn off readers hoping for a snappy, picture-laden bit of nostalgic hagiography (for that, see Dick Clark's own book, coauthored with Fred Bronson, replete with pictures and even, as the cover declares, a "Nifty Dance Poster Inside!"). What Jackson gives us is a deeply researched, thoughtful, and judicious history of the show and its implications. There are numerous divergences from common wisdom here-- most notable is Jackson's read on the so-called "integration" of Bandstand, which he treats with nuance and sophistication. References to obscure tunes and performers indicate that Jackson is surely one of those legendary record-collector enthusiasts; it shows in his footnotes but not, blessedly, in the text itself. Instead, the book gives us a closely observed history of the pop music business and one of its most important institutions.
A Must Read For Any Oldies Fan.......2001-07-05
This is the ultimate book on one of the early major Rock n Roll shows. Every detail you could possibly want to know about American Bandstand is in here. From the early days in Philadelphia, to the Dick Clark payola scandal, to the move to California, this book covers it. It also discuss the discrimination that existed, and how the regulars became celebrities. I really enjoyed and would recomend it to any fan of the fifties and sixties
DUH! I know Dick hosted AB many years ago!.......2000-11-15
I don't even watch "American Bandstand," and I know nothing about Dick Clark except:
1. That he hosted the show,
2. That 's also notorious for his "Pyramid" duo, which had been short-lived but is till aired here in New York,
3. And that on every New Years' Eve, he comes to New York to do I-bet-you-know-what.
Musical "Philadelphia Story" Retold in "Bandstand" Bio.......2000-10-07
In his history of Dick Clark and "American Bandstand," John Jackson had his choice of several stories. He could tell of Clark's ascension to the "Bandstand" podium at a strategic time, hooking Clark, his host network (ABC), and host city (Philadelphia) to pop culture prominence. Jackson could chronicle the city's fast-moving music scene, the teen singers, disc jockeys, and businessmen (Clark among them) who exploited the new music. Finally, he could tell the show's own 32-year story, as "Bandstand" led, followed, then rehashed youth culture.
Despite factual errors (putting "All You Need Is Love" on "Sgt. Pepper" shows as much Beatle knowledge as Jackson claimed Clark had) and unneeded 60s-70s rehash, Jackson's biography adddresses its subjects accurately and engagingly. Jackson sees Clark not as money-grubbing villain but driven, opportunistic businessman who "within the bounds of propriety - followed the dollar wherever it took him."
Clark fought to cult!ivate, keep, and wield a pleasant national image to his advantage. Jackson succeeds most in showing how that image served, even saved Clark's career. Clark's soft-spoken, "nice guy" image eased the transition from the scandalous, tragic tenure of original "Bandstand" host Bob Horn. It softened and widened (some said, despite Clark's objections, "whitened") rock and roll's ease into daily life and the youth buying power enjoining it. Mostly, it masked the clear-eyed, hard-charging figure who not only stood up to federal regulators and network bosses, but parlayed his "Bandstand" success into music-related (torn by 1959-60's "payola" scandal, covered in depth here despite little Clark participation), then rebuilt into complete media-based success.
Fans of early rock will enjoy Jackson's musical side trips. He looks at the "Bandstand" dancers' quick fame, the synergy and rivalry between the show, Philadelphia promoters, and disc jockeys, the rise of small record labels whi!ch (with Clark's involvement throughout) recorded national hits (Jackson tells fresh versions of the making of "At The Hop" and "The Twist"), and, finally, Clark's move to California which closed Philly music dominance (and, to believe Jackson, did little for "Bandstand," either). Figures like musician Charlie Gracie, producer Tony Mammarella, and songwriters Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe, today unknown outside Philadelphia music, are remembered either as villain or victim. The last chapters, describing Clark's adjusting the "Bandstand" image to changing musical times, are among the book's most intriguing.
The result makes "American Bandstand" unflinching, unfawning yet high-minded critique that Clark, generally no friend of critics, could support. The epilogue essays Clark's motivations, how he achieved and maintained fame and riches yet still promotes, produces, and hosts. Jackson concludes that it's what Clark enjoys doing and does best. That, and the dearth of harsh word!s for Clark by anyone in the book, makes this an incisive, fun read for pop culture fans.
Tough to get through.......1999-12-28
This is a very tough book to read as the author seems only to list endless, meaningless, facts without organizing them in to an interesting narrative. The role American Bandstand and Dick Clark played in the early days of television and rock 'n roll is a very interesting story. Unfortuneately this book fails to tell it an enjoyable way. Also, the author seems to have an unjustified vendetta against Clark.

"It's got a great beat and you can dance to it...".......2003-07-10
"Dick Clark's American Bandstand" is not just a look back at the popular music show of the pre-MTV generation but at the history of American music and popular culture during the span from 1952-1989 when "American Bandstand" aired. That explains why you will find pictures of Led Zeppelin and the Ayatollah Khomeini in this book despite the fact neither ever performed on Bandstand. With the show playing a pivotal role in the ABC Sunday night family drama "American Dreams," this oversized book provides a relatively detailed look back at the show and the music Dick Clark played while the teenagers of first Philadelphia and then California danced their ways in the livingrooms of America.
Dick Clark became the host of the afternoon dance television show for teenagers in 1956 when he was a youthful 26 (as opposed to the youthful 73 he is currently), and this volume is one of the first opportunities he has taken to reminisce about the series that made him a household name as well as to talk about the artists who appeared on the show. "American Bandstand" was television's longest running and most popular dance program, with the power to make a record an overnight success and Clark's most interesting comments have to do with the early days of rock 'n' roll when "Bandstand" was pivotal in bringing the new music to a mass audience. That is why it is so strange to hear about the studio being picketed by angry teenagers because Clark was replacing Bob Horn as the host of "AB" (which was originally "Bob Horn's Bandstand" on radio) or to think about the show being 3 hours long, airing each afternoon from 2:30 until 5:30 playing 35 records a day. Of course, when the kids rated songs during Record Review the importance of being able to dance to a song was going to move American music away from pop to rock. The strength of this book is that Clark consistently offers insights and analysis of the music and the times instead of simply stringing together a series of anecdotes and memories.
Clark and his co-writer Fred Bronson divide the volume into four chapters, representing the fifties ("Let the Good Times Roll"), sixties ("Hard Day's Night"), seventies ("Disco Fever"), and the end of "American Bandstand" ("We Got the Beat"). The book is illustrated with pictures of memorabilia from each decade and photographs from the "Bandstand" archives with detailed captions, all intended to provide visual counterpoints to Clark's behind-the-scenes recollections and insights. There are also anecdotes about songs and performers, sidebars filled with facts and music trivia (the first record played on the premier network installment of "American Bandstand" was Jerry Lee Lewis's "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On"), and even a full-size poster of "footprint" dance steps. You will get a sense for the history of music and "American Bandstand," especially when the show shifted to California during the British invasion. Whether you watched "American Bandstand" or only know about it as a recognizable brand name of American pop culture, you will find this book informative and insightful.
American Bandstand.......2001-12-28
This book has great information about "American Bandstand" as well as terrific pictures. However, there are parts of the book where I believe the authors got some facts mixed up, but other than that, it's a great book.

History of American Bandstand.......2002-07-12
This review is only for the 'Fifties and 'Sixties chapters of the book.
The pictures from the TV Show, "American Bandstand," and the lists of hits from each decade are the redeeming qualities of this book. The sycophantic Dick-Clark-as-God writing grows intolerable very quickly.
The pictures are wonderful, especially in countering the bogus "Grease" idea of 'Fifties teen clothing. The kids on Bandstand influenced fashions all over the USA in the 1950s and 1960s. The lists of songs at the end of each chapter, devoted to the decade just covered, are wonderful for nostalgia buffs. The text, however, is another matter. I was unable to finish reading the book.

Interesting . . . . . ........2002-01-11
If everybody thinks Dick Clark started "American Bandstand," you're wrong. This book tells about "Bandstand" before Dick Clark became the host. It goes into great detail about the years between 1952 and 1956.
However, the book was slightly disappointing. I bought it in hopes the author would talk a little more about the kids who used to dance on the show (since learning my favorite disc jockey danced on the show in 1953), and it didn't. Can't win 'em all, right? Also there were many spelling and punctuation errors as well. But those can be easilly overlooked. All in all, this was a good book.

Book Description
With InDesign CS2 quickly becoming the industry standard in desktop publishing, there's no shortage of books promising to get you up to speed on it. None, however, does so quite like this book, which keeps the focus right where you, as a designer, want it--on designing! Providing just enough of a conceptual framework to use the program effectively, but omitting the tech-heavy under-the-hood discussions that represent the core of other InDesign tomes, this full-color guide uses gorgeous real-world examples and simple step-by-step instructions to cover InDesign CS2's newest features. The book includes a chapter on workflow techniques using Adobe Bridge, the new hub uniting the Creative Suite 2 applications. There's coverage of layer comps from Photoshop, and more on typography, including a new justification setting as well as drag-and-drop text. As you work through chapters on text and typography, pages and documents, placed images, tables, color, special effects, multimedia, preflighting, and more, you'll quickly master both the InDesign basics you need to get your job done and the advanced techniques that will give your pages that extra flair! A companion CD includes lesson files plus style sheets, templates, graphic libraries, images, and more!
Customer Reviews:
Intermediate focus.......2007-01-09
Being a new InDesign user of two months, the 189-page "How to Wow with InDesign CS2" was a good starting point for me to begin to learn how to more effectively use IDCS2. Written by two of Australia's experts in using InDesign, Wayne Rankin and Mike McHugh, I learned many of the IDCS2 basics and beyond through the text, numerous graphics, text boxes, and accompanying CD. The CD provides raw text and graphic examples from the text as well as templates to practice with and/or see how they changed during the development of the book. Almost every other page has one or more short tips or insights to help you with the topic at hand. The book was written with the beginner to intermediate user in mind although I think it's more toward the latter. The book also covers both MAC and Window applications.
"How To Wow with InDesign CS2" is broken down into nine chapters, a nine-page index, and accompanying CD that includes grayscale and RGB textures, templates, graphics library with custom-made elements; project files; document presets; stroke styles; and a list of keyboard shortcuts.
Chapter 1 covers the basics including your desktop workspace, creating a document, setting defaults, transforming (moving, resizing, and rotating) objects in your new document, how text frames are created and work, acquainting you with Adobe Bridge to work more effectively with other Adobe products, and using color management to name a few topics.
Chapter 2 "Text and Typography" covers the important features of importing, formatting, and positioning text, using grids, using the eyedropper tool to format text, and styles. One topic I noted not there was changing text direction which I'm using currently doing a lot of.
Chapter 3 provides help for converting Quark Express documents, creating templates, imposing document pages, and long document features.
Chapter 4 covers creating, customizing, fills and strokes, images, and more for tables.
Chapter 5 addresses using color, swatches, tints, gradients, and more.
Chapter 6 reviews graphic placing, positioning, and linking as well as PDF Illustrator & Photoshop files and formats, and Photoshop Layer Comps.
Chapters 7, 8, and 9 deal with "transparency, interactive elements, and output of which the former two may be more of an interest to the intermediate user although the output chapter is a must for any user.
My only wish for a future edition would be to interweave the text into the CD more so that the various examples would be better illustrated before, during, and after the finished action and/or product - perhaps a book on CD? I would recommend beginners look for a different book if they are not experienced with INCS2.
Confusing book, lots of errors.......2006-11-13
I would say it's good if you already know how to use InDesign so you can spot the errors.
So far I have spent a whole day going through this for my students for only two of the book's chapters so far!
I wish I had checked out the errors in this book before having my students buy this book.
The fonts that the CD files ask for are TrueType so you have to know how to edit your fonts when opening file one (chapter 2). If you have a Windows operating system you will not have the free dingbats that come on a Mac so just do the best you can by choosing webdings or similar font. Someone needs to update the book's CD files to include Adobe's Open Type.
I had to tell students that page 42 starts with page 2 of the start file that is on your CD, Ch2. The way the illustrations are arranged it is hard to tell which file you are to be working on. The wqay illustrations are arranged is even more confusing. If you have a Windows computer, the RTF will not work as the book indicates.
Page 45 note: The Vertical justification will not work unless you have a new document open and you place the text. It will work if you click on the "Ignore text wrap" option but then the type runs over the other type in that area. If you look at their example in the book, there is no other text on the page. Would a beginner know this? The CS book is correct but the CS2 book has all the same screen captures of the justification choices but they don't match the examples underneath. Students will have to create a new document and place the text and then choose Top, Center, Bottom and Justify. Then you'll see your type positioned like the examples shown in the book.
Page 46 note: If your baseline grid will not show up when you choose view>grids and guides>Show baseline grid, check page 47, 3rd line up. If your view is the default setting of 75% or higher you can see it. So how do you change your view? Lower left area has the % of view size and you can change it there. You can also type in 75% or just zoom in closer.
Note: for some things to work you have to be sure you have the appropriate "A" or the "P" chosen in the control palette. For example, the instructions on page 47 to align to baseline will not work unless you are in the Paragraph palette.
Pages 48-52 note:The text they supply and the text that is in the book is different so the lessons will not work exactly as shown. The end file is even the same as the beginning file so students may not know what they are supposed to do.
Page 53 note: The examples of text they use in the book has punctuation to align. The book's examples are good to show how Open Type works. However, the text they supply on the CD does not really give you an idea of what they are trying to communicate. Better examples are needed.
Page 57 note. Screen capture is wrong for optical kerning. Gee who put this book together?
Page 59 note: To alter the "earthwatch 2004" go to the Master pages in the top right of your screen. Pages can be set there and they will change for all the pages in the document. (Beginners would not know to go to the master pages)
Page 60 note: The word "watch" they try to sample is already the same in the CD files. The book shows a different font to begin with for the two words so you get the idea about formatting with the eyedropper. Beginners would be saying what's this supposed to do?
Now I see the disclaimer about the CD and the "notice of liability" and wish I had not been so trusting of good reviews.
Seems like the authors or Peachpit have had ample time to get the right files and right fonts on the accompanying CD for the CS2 version. Seems like they could place the right images since the book is mostly a redo of the CS book. I really don't find a reason to really buy the CS2 book if the CS version is a bit more accurate.
Lots of nice designs (pretty pictures) but content is much better in other books or the help section of InDesign. Like so many other books this is a redo of CS with negligible changes (for the worse).
Loving this book! Perfect for the classroom........2006-08-09
Just rec'd the book and I must say, I love the Illustrator, How to Wow book, and now I equally appreciate this book. Excellent layout and design, attractive examples (so important, who wants to learn the skills when poor examples are given?), large color graphics, enough detail to complete tasks. Short wide pages with fairly large text and helpful color blocking make it easy to actually use the book as you work if you have enough space to open it next to you. Only 1/2 an inch thick, but close to 200 pages, well-indexed, packed with exactly what you need to know and not a whole lot of extra. The nine chapters are very logically put together, abbreviating a bit, 1-Basics, 2-Text, 3-Pages & Documents, 4-Tables, 5-Using Color, 6-Importing Graphics, 7-Wkg with Transparency, 8-Adding Interactive Elements, and 9-Output. Handsome logical layout, beautiful but practical examples, well written. It zeroes in on exactly what I wanted to know and without glossing over the more intricate aspects, like some books do. I teach this application software at the college. InDesign is a marvelous, user-friendly application. This book helps to make all the possibilities of InDesign apparent. It would make a marvelous text book for teaching.
Great Book.......2005-11-21
This has to be one of if not the best book for InDesign. It goes into detail for various aspects of the design process like preflighting for example. Also this book has very good tips.
Well worth the price.
Everything to get you excited about using InDesign CS.......2005-06-07
I learned QuarkXPress in school ... hated it then, still hate it. Bought the Adobe package one version before CS came out (InDesign 2.0) and didn't care much for ID, so used Illustrator 10 for all my page layout projects.
I have recently discovered ID CS ... with the help of this book. It is clear, to the point, and tells you everything you need to know (the basics to intermediate) to get started using ID CS for everything. It even has a chapter on how to make interactive PDF files out of ID.
Did you know that there is no white swatch? There is only "Paper" ... which you can change the color of to simulate the printed paper color ... but this "background" will not print. Pretty cool, huh? Learn other awesome stuff in this book.
