From Sea to Shining Sea.......2003-11-28
This book is a treasury of poems, songs, and stories, from the great country of the US :) The songs are traditional, and, if you have a little skill in piano, flute, recorder, or mallet percussion, you can play them with ease.
The poems are okay, and they include Paul Revere's Ride, which is wonderful.
The stories are also interesting, and they probably aren't ones that you've ever heard before; all of them are 'G' rated, except for one that might be a little scary for little kids in the first section about a girl whose fingers were smashed off by her father and brothers (gross).
This book is okay, but it isn't the greatest thing out there.
A great resource for teachers and others........2003-03-14
I've used this book in my work as a substitute teacher in elementary school and as a Scout leader. It reflects the
diversity of American culture - good Native American tales, for example. The continuity of the illustrations - each illustrator does one section - is a nice touch.
wonderful resource for home and classroom educators.......2001-11-02
A beautiful book with a terrific variety of offerings. I homeschool and have used this book repeatedly through the years with a 10 year old and now a 5 year old. This book gives an excellent foundation for each of the subjects covered in its separate chapter. There are stories, poems, brief non-fiction pieces, and songs that include simple but nicely creative piano accompaniment. You'll find everything from scary southern folk tales to "Who's on First" to a brief, accessible and sad report of Isabel's "cleansing" of Spain. The writers and artists are incredibly diverse, and include Norman Finkelstein, Longfellow, and Leo and Diane Dillon. The fact that the above and many others can seamlessly exist is a wonderful testament to the talents of the editors, Cohn and Bang. Perhaps they could compile an equally terrific anthology of world lit for kids; I'd snap it up. My kids love it and will gladly pick it up on their own to pore over the beautiful artwork.
A wonderful treasury for elementary age students........1997-02-07
This is a wonderful book that is full of american folklore. It includes stories, poetry, folk songs, and illustrations. The illustrations are fabulous and are by well-known picture book artists including Marcia Brown, Barbara Cooney, Leo and Diane Dillon, Trina Schart Hyman, Chris Van Allsburg, and Ed Young. The folktale retellings are well-written and are appropriate for reading out loud as well as fourth grade reading level and above. The included folk songs have the musical score as well as the lyrics.
I highly recommend this book for parents and teachers.

insight into oral traditions.......2004-01-19
this book concentrates on anglo-american folklore, and so there is no reference to such characters as paul bunyan or johnny appleseed. still, there are a lot of surprisingly familiar stories that survived and were passed down when europeans settled in america. about half of the book is devoted to tales, including "ancient" tales (with references as far back as norse mythology, as well as robin hood and chaucer), jack tales, "fool irishman" tales, and "tall" tales. the second half is devoted to songs, simultaneously notated in shape as well as traditional notation. this section include ballads (i.e. songs that usually have a narrative), songs, hymns, songs for children, dances (with the choreography explained), and fiddle tunes. the book also includes odds and ends like jokes and riddles as well as a fantastic section of texts from graves from the turn of the century (around the late 1800's). also includes a guide to further reading and nice illustrations by joshua tolford. the stories themselves may feel a little quaint to some, but the colorful local dialect make them engaging and they provide insight into the lives and times of the people who have passed them down.
Americana.......2000-04-10
This is a part of our heritage as Americans. We all have some folklore that helps shape our lives and upbringings. It is the underlying history that does not get placed in the history books. We unfortunately do not teach this stuff in schools. America, being an extraordinary melting pot has a great diversity of tales to be told. This collection includes ballads, tall tales, fiddle tunes, childrens song and hymns. It is a quality overview of American folklore. It will set a yearning in your soul and make you wax nostalgic for lemon-ade and Tom Sawyer. This is a small chunk of what it means to be American.

Book Description
Whirlwind is a Spirit Dancing is an anthology of poems based on traditional Native American songs and stories from different tribes across North America. Collected by the renowned poet, historian, and folklorist Natalia Belting, the poems are rich in vivid imagery, showing how Native Americans creatively interpret the wonders of the natural world. Piquing children’s inherent curiosity, the poems encourage an imaginative exploration of the world around them. The lavish, dramatic illustrations and decorative motifs by Leo and Diane Dillon are perfect complements to the fascinating text. The Dillons are winners of two Caldecott Medals and multiple Boston Globe-Horn Book and Coretta Scott King awards.

Neptune Rising... A Wonderful Tale of the Sea.......2000-10-27
Neptune Rising is one of those fabulous books that fascinates not only children, but adults as well. The stories themselves weave throughout your head until you too want to become one with the sea and swim with the characters. Jane Yolen transcends most authors' stories of the sea, with both new and old fables in this powerful book. I remember as a child being enthralled with her books, sitting on the floor of my public library for hours. As an adult with my own collection of her works, I escape into that same dreamworld whenever I read Neptune Rising again.

Great Resource for Spanish.......2005-03-03
This book is a summary of folklore in relation to children. Some knowledge of Spanish is very helpful as you'd need to know how to pronounce the words to play the games. Some of these games seem rather old-fashioned and I don't think many modern children would like them. Consider those a history and folklore lesson. There is some background given on some of the traditions. This book seems to be extracted or have used the same research as Mexican American Folklore published by August House. This is not a book with quick and easy directions as it is more of a reading book. If you want to teach your children songs and games in Spanish, I'd choose another one. If you're a Spanish student or a native speaker who wants to know about the Latin culture, then this might be a good choice.

Diane goode Book.......2003-05-16
It is a nice book, but it wasn't what was expected. When it said, Folk tales and songs, I thought they would be related and the storeis would be about the songs tht are included. Since that is what I was hoping to get, I was disappointed in that.
The stories are cute, but not really great ones to read aloud to others, in my opinion.
Enough said.

Book Description
Flash MX 2004 Game Design DemystifiedYour comprehensive guide to creating games using Flash MX 2004. It will take you through the process of creating a game in Flash MX 2004. The first several chapters introduce general processes for creating games, while the second section looks at the important concepts for creating realistic games. Such concepts include math, physics, collision detection, and collision reaction. A third section delves into more creative concepts: tile-based worlds, 3D visualization, artificial intelligence, using graphics, and using sound. Later chapters provide an introduction to multiplayer games, creating a high score list for games, and a selection games for which the authors share the development process, including code. The accompanying CD will provide the code for each function discussed in the book as well as working versions of the games.
Customer Reviews:
Technically good, except for one flaw........2007-04-11
Very informative as far as what it teaches, but I noticed it's written for the experienced user...so why does it come with a demo of the software you're being taught? If you're experienced, you already own it, I think.
Decent book with a mixed approach.......2006-12-01
This book does not use the typical approach where various games of increasing complexity and size are used to explain concepts throughout the chapters. Instead, part of the book is dedicated to small games pieces or recipes and another to full games. In any case, there are many areas of Flash game programming that are covered. Some of the topics include game math, level editors, artificial intelligence (AI) and even multiplayer games. Of course not ever topic is covered with as much detail as others. But, plenty of references to both web links and books are provided throughout the chapters and in the appendix for more information on certain topics. The book includes a CD with demo software, game files, PDFs and other various files.
The first chapters (Part I) start with an introduction to gaming, including terminology and genres. Then is a description of Flash's capabilities and limitations. Surprisingly, there is no basic introduction to Flash or ActionScript that is frequently seen in other books. The rest of this section is dedicated to general development issues including game design and planning.
The core material of this book was cover in Part II (Chapter 3-14). Here many of the fundamentals of game programming were explained through small example scripts and incomplete games. Game math is one of the first topics introduced, followed by physics and then collisions (detections and reactions). Following the math and physics related scripts did get a bit difficult at times. However, full understanding is not necessarily required since the many scripts provided can be easily implemented into other games. Also, the PDF files on the CD consisted of some of the equations used in the scripts with the math worked out in pencil. Aside from the math intensive chapters, there was still a lot of useful material in the remaining chapters. The chapters on tile and isometric based games provided good information on how to handle them more easily and efficiently. In addition, the chapter on AI was original, since it covered maze creation and path finding as well as the usual enemy attack/pursuit scripts that many books focus on. There was even a decent, although single and short, chapter on sound, including using it in Flash and creating your own. All the material in these chapters were explained in detail and included numerous images.
The final part of the book concludes with discussion on several full functioning games. There is one game for each of the remaining chapters (15-18). Not all of the code from each game could be discussed, as the chapters from Part II took up the bulk of the book. Nonetheless, the key areas of each game were described in detail and the .fla source files on the CD did include comments. The CD also provided additional source files for a handful of full and incomplete games. Still, the games in these chapters were each complex and large enough to have warranted more coverage. The multiplayer chess game, which used a socket server (Chapter 16), could have definitely benefited from more content. Ultimately there were probably too few pages to fairly discuss the games in the final chapters.
This book is certainly not for a beginner, since it does not have a Flash or ActionScript primer that most of these books would include. On the back cover it is categorized as intermediate to advance and I agree for the most part. It was at least a notch above in difficulty from beginner level books I have read so far. However, with little coverage on object oriented programming (OOP), it probably can not be considered a true advanced book. Some of the examples did use exported class files, but actual discussion on them was limited. In the end, I found the middle part on game pieces to be more helpful. Nevertheless, "Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Game Design Demystified" is still a good book and will work as both a reference and a standard guide.
Rating: 4/5
Not recommended.......2006-11-04
I would suggest any books by Colin Moock or the Robert Penner book "Programming Macromedia Flash MX" over this book. I bought this book because I hoped it would explain some physics applications that I was having trouble with and because it dives into topics like multiplayer games. To be fair, I haven't gotten to the multiplayer games section yet, so it's possible that that part is clear and useful. The physics part is only helpful if you are content to simply copy and paste code into your flash apps. I'd like to really understand the topic at hand and for me this book failed miserably.
1. This book is poorly edited. I know it is difficult to make sure there are no typos when you're reading through code examples, but somehow O'Reilly press gets it done very well. I found several examples in the first few chapters, some of them actually interfering with my comprehension of the text.
2. This book does a very poor job of explaining complicated topics. In some places, the authors suggest readers turn to pdf files on the included cd for further explication. The pdf files I looked at, however, were simply scans of handwritten notes. This would have been acceptable to me, but the notes really didn't explain anything any more than the book or code examples did.
When explaining how to test for collisions between graphic objects, the book attempts to describe a quadratic equation. This appears to be a difficult thing to describe; however, this does not excuse shortcuts such as simply not explaining how/why the authors solve the problem the way that they do. I am particularly frustrated by an example of code in which the variables are named a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j... Yes, the authors need to create a number of temporary variables and perhaps this method was optimized. But for a didactic text? Use variable names that actually mean something, that actually convey what is being done.
Look elsewhere for your flash informationl.
Good Start but lacking details.......2005-09-08
I was hoping that this book would shed some light on how to apply practical mathematics to AS2.0 in order to produce some realistic effects. It provides a good start and even gives good descriptions about the inner workings of some of the concepts.
I took two years of H.S. physics, trig, and calc and I still find the explanations lacking for those of us that require the "why's" to all our questions.
The examples on the CD are extremely helpful IF you understand the code. Sorting through the files to find the code is hard and some of the files seem unfinished.
I would get this used if given the chance to do it all over again.
Great Game Book, Worst ActionScript 2.0 Book.......2005-02-06
I found this book great to learn programming basic game physics but it is certainly one of the worst book to pick if you want to upgrade your ActionScript knowledge from 1.0 to 2.0.
The source codes are ALMOST NO DIFFERENCE from ActionScript 1.0. It is almost as if the arthur thinks that by adding variable declarations, ActionScript 1.0 becomes ActionScript 2.0.
No true Object-Oriented Programming practices (which is the true strength of ActionScript 2.0) at all. The coding style are simply ActionScript 1.0 structure (with variable declarations).
Still, this book is great to pick if you are new to game development. However, be aware that this book is NOT demonstrating how to program in ActionSctip 2.0 properly.

Customer Reviews:
Great shot from Macromedia Press!!!.......2005-09-15
[**this review was made by Roberto Cunha from AIR User Group**]It's not correct to say that it'is a book for beginners. There are, on the first pages, the traditionals lessons about the menus, the stage, how to work with panels. Basic concepts are boarded with the right details levels for the inexperienced.
However, with more than eight hundred pages, this book reaches the most advanced levels, as manipulate applications with audio and video, 3D animation, object-oriented programming and communication with external sources.
The promise of the heading is fulfilled, once that it is possible to find practically all the subjects into the flash MX 2004,since the small ball put into motion (the "hello world" of the flash), even applications for pocket-pcs and options of accessibility. We also find chapters entirely dedicated to the publication techniques (CDs, web sites, relation with search engines), debugging, best programming practices and characteristics of the flash player.
Summarizing: almost nothing was forgotten. Therefore it is an appropriated book as source of information for novices and also for the experienced ones. Moreover, it is a book published in association with Macromedia Press, with the signature of a three authors first class group, five contributors and three technical reviewers.
I wish I could give it 5 stars.......2005-02-08
This book is a must-have Flash book. The only thing that was missing, at least for me, is a chapter where the trio of the best Flash developers out there could have included a real application and deconstructed it in front of our eyes. Let's face it, advanced Flashers, though might stumble over some code, can find a way out without much hassle. Those who are somehow new to Flash (beginners and intermediates) need a hands-on practice. I need a real rich application get dismanteled before my eyes. I don't want to see the code. I want a book to guide me to create my own code. Afterall, this is a book that you'd never regret buying. Oh Yea, worth your savings!
Flash goodness is directly proportional to it's heaviness!.......2004-02-27
All readers will appreciate this clearly written, very detailed book on the latest version of flash. Great for those wanting to learn more about Flash's programming and backend capabilities. Especially handy were the sections on external data, skinning components and 3D.
Definitely a resource worth having!
Well rounded guide to MX 2004.......2004-02-12
If you are new to Flash or you are an intermediate Flash user then this is a great book for you. Rarely do you see a book that manages to touch upon all the aspects of Flash MX 2004 as this book does. The chapters on using the authoring the environment are clear and concise. The chapters on Actionscript give you a good start with practical examples. The specialized chapters on Accessibility, 3D, Math, PocketPC development, etc. don't focus on squeezing in one sample app that may or may not be relevant to you but rather deal with the concepts involved around these topics. All that and the language is easy to read and concepts are quite made quite clear.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone but an advanced Flash developer, giving the reader just enough breadth to see where a concept may be relevant to their needs. Don't expect this to be in depth in any particular topic but rather use this as a starting point to launch into other books with greater depth in the areas you are interested in. You may be surprised what new things you discover about Flash that you hadn't thought of doing before!
Demystified... What a great CONCEPT.......2004-02-06
Being a student in Spain, I found this book a great guide for anyone starting out with Flash. It was easy for me follow and understand (unlike some other flash books out there). Great tutorials, helpful tips and a quick point form reviews of each chapter. A book that answered all my question. Plus a web companion which was a big bonus!
....
Over all, an awsome book written in an English lanuage that anyone can understand. Looking forward to a future second edition.
