Book Description
Two large-scale symphonic masterworks — one powerfully portraying a day in the mountains, the other Strauss's day-to-day life at home with his wife Pauline. Eine Alpensinfonie is a magnificent showcase for Strauss's sumptuous orchestration while The Symphonia Domestica has more of the intimate chamber work feel.

Dover scores again!.......2002-06-19
Dover scores another fantastic bargain with this coupling of two of Richard Strauss's orchestral works, Eine Alpensinfonie and Symphonia Domestica. Why these works are paired is a mystery--Symphonia Domestica's natural companion piece is Ein Heldenleben, but Dover already published that with Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche and Also Sprach Zarathustra. The draw for this collection, though, is surely the Alpine Symphony, and that anything else at all is included is a pure bonus. Another bonus for the language-challenged among us is the English translations for the titles of sections and the musical terms. Dover's implementation of these translations is somewhat awkward, though, as the section titles are listed at the beginning of each piece, but the musical terms are all bunched together at the end of the volume, forcing you to flip repeatedly through it at least once.
These two works date from a time and place now past when a respected composer could literally write for any orchestral forces he desired. Eine Alpensinfonie is scored for a huge orchestra (150 instruments, by one count--although not 150 different instrumental parts) and includes hecklephone, windmachine, thundermachine, tenor tubas, and 20(!) French horns--12 are offstage and play only in 21 measures of the piece, for less than one minute. Symphonia Domestica is not quite as gargantuan (as the name indicates) but is still scored for a quite large ensemble, with oboe d'amore and 4 saxophones--soprano, alto, baritone, and the very rare bass saxophone added to the large wind section. These scores are bibles of orchestration--Strauss is a master of handling huge forces, surpassed only by Gustav Mahler, and that arguably. Students of orchestration can learn much about writing for large, professional orchestras from careful study of these pieces; but they are also full of important details that will be helpful for those using smaller ensembles.
Beyond the orchestration, however, lies deep and powerful music. Strauss has been criticized for being overly programmatic and literal, writing trivial music and being derivative of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. But whatever truth these criticisms hold, the fact remains that Wagner, Mahler and Strauss revolutionized music. Aside from their already well-known harmonic innovations and orchestral mastery, they freed melody from its primarily vocal conception, which had limited it from its origin. Where most composers before them would follow a large leap with motion in the opposite direction, thereby restricting the melodic line in musical space, these three composed great soaring lines in which a large leap might well be followed by another leap or stepwise motion in the same direction. The resulting themes often surpass the range of a single instrument; a given melody might, for example, begin in the tuba doubled with bassoon, celli and contrabasses, move to French horns and finally end in the upper registers of flutes, oboes, and violins. Orchestration becomes not simply an assigning of instruments to particular lines, but an inseparable part of the composition of a piece. Whatever flaws Strauss's music might have (and I have to admit that the Storm Scene in the Alpine Symphony, with its wind and thunder machines and the portrayal of raindrops in the pizzicato strings is too cliched for my taste), its glories far surpass them.
Reading the score can also help determine which recording of a work is particularly good. Strauss's layers of counterpoint and his textural conceptions can suffer at the hands of an overenthusiastic brass section (this is the man who said, "Never look encouragingly at the trombones.") or an insufficiently aware conductor. To supplement this score, I enthusiastically recommend Andre Previn's rendition of Eine Alpensinfonie with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, released on Telarc and also available here at Amazon.com.

Book Description
Manny Ibay, a Los Angeles trial attorney, tells how he applied the Robbins' principles, step by step, to remake his life. Actual excerpts from Mr. Ibay's success journal chronicle his ten-year experience with Robbins' books, tapes and live seminars to move from a $1,000 per month job he hated to designing his dream life and become master of his own destiny. A lifestyle, which enabled him to go on thirty-six vacations in the past five years as well, as operate his own business. Unlike many books on personal development, this is told in storybook form--of how one underachiever was able to follow a well known and widely available success program and use it to his great benefit. This book answers the questions that Tony Robbins fans and skeptics ask after viewing his infomercial. Do the tapes really work? And how can they work for me?

PTSD: Pathways Through the Secret Door
Interesting but a bit flat..........2007-08-28
Manny tells his story about how Tony Robbins helped him change his life.
I was expecting more out of this book and bought it out of curiosity.
There really isn't much meat in it.
I would give this book 6 stars.......2005-09-20
It's the similarity of the author's goals to mine - to do what I want, when I want - that drew me to the book. As also, the essence of Tony Robbins' principles that Manny Ibay has captured so well. Based on the title and subtitle, on an impulse, I ordered the book from Amazon, and it has proven to the best purchase to date I have made.
I am a huge fan of Tony Robbins, but the immense volume of his work makes it difficult to satisfactorily get one's hands around it all, in its entirety. The conciseness of this book, tightly summarizing the distilled wisdom of Tony, makes it a gem. It might sound exaggerated but, truly, I consider this book a jewel in the crown of my library of Tony's books and tapes. The author meticulously records the details of how he applied Tony's advice to his life. He lays bare his own failure/aspirations, provides simple but valuable illustrations from his success journals, outlines the action steps he took, and tracks his progress. His story rings true and convincing. Cynics might say he has not conquered the earth by following his dreams (Becoming a lawyer ...traveling extensively ... acquiring a ritzy convertible, etc) but, in a manner of speaking, he has: what better a world to conquer than the one of your dreams, whatever they may be!
I am particularly appreciative of the moments of doubt/failure that he chose to reveal. It's those instances that made his narrative very real to me, and had me convinced that Tony's success formula does indeed work. That even if it takes a decade, Tony's advice works, if sincerely ACTED UPON. That lofty goals of an Agassi or Mandela are not the only ones worthy of consideration - even breaking out of a dead-end job, yes, is lofty enough for many of us. In fact, it's the very "smallness" of everyday challenges that has most of us, stymied. It's when I can't seem to follow through on even a simple resolve (... like waking up earlier to work on my goals!) that makes me wonder, how the heck do doer's get so much accomplished. The manner in which Manny Ibay, an average Joe, as he calls himself, pulled himself out of his rut has me inspired. It makes me go, yesss, it's possible - and this is how. Thank you, Manny, for sharing your success.
It has been insightful for me to follow the thought processes and actions behind the transformation of a so-called average person - coz' I am average. I have no gut-wrenching handicaps to overcome, or incredibly dazzling heights to reach. I'm yet another dreamer, seeking, amongst other things, a fulfilling, paying, career that will afford me money, flexibility, and leisure - to travel. That's where this book comes in, and scores. It's an excellent model and motivational tool for an "average" person. It's not theoretical pep talk, but a practical, how-to manual -- a step by step, real life example -- on which to base one's own plans for change. I read this book almost every day, to fire me up. I overwrite sections of its workbook/journal with my own "success" entries and/or "failure", which has helped to give form to my own dreams and designs for living. So, how would I rate this book ? 6 stars -- on a scale of Amazon's 1 to 5.
Thank You, Manny Ibay!!!.......2004-01-21
Great read! If you have read a Tony Robbins book, listened to a tape, or have seen him live, then this book is for you! Manny shows how he started with just a great attitude and a belief system to having everything he has ever wanted. Hard work, dedication, and a persistence to accomplishing what you want is what lies ahead for the reader. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Ibay's work. To think, this book started as a thank you note to Tony Robbins. A job well done.
Thank you, Tony Robbins.......2003-11-10
Twice I have read this book from cover to cover, its very inspiring. I have been a tony robbins fan for a number of years and this book gives you a detailed account how Manny Ibay used tony's materials to bring a dramatic change in life. This book is must read if you are struggling and want to change for the better.

Very timely,very helpful-but too late for Clinton & Currie........1998-12-17
DeMars is practical, practical, practical. She tackles the most confudling dilemmas at work and provides an ethical compass to resolve them. You can always quit, but why not resolve the dilemmas and keep your job, too? I didn't always agree with her, but DeMars got me talking to my coworkers and my boss about what was the best solution-which was exactly DeMars' purpose for writing the book in the first place, I suspect. Yes, sometimes good employees do bad things--so here's what you do when it happens.
Very practical guide to resolving ethical dilemmas at work........1998-09-21
Bettie Currie, Fawn Hall, and Rosemary Woods needed this book. So did I. Lots of us face ethical choices that keep us up at night, or cause us to wince inside. DeMars uses lots of real-life examples to help us resolve the common dilemmas we find every day at work -- dilemmas about confidentiality, loyalty, office romance, harassment, information manipulation -- it's all here.
She also coaches us about how to get the ethics discussion going -- without losing our jobs.
My favorite chapters were on lying (only very little lies told for social convention and very large lies told to save lives are OK) and "the trouble with the boss" (here's how to talk to him about his profanity, disrespect, lies, thievery, harassment, whatever). DeMars says high ethics boosts productivity and retention of customers and employees, then shows us how to have those long-overdue conversations about how we treat each other. A great book, period. I am so clear now about where I need to draw "that line" between what I will and will not do, and I am so confident about how to do it.

Excellent reference.......2005-07-28
Nan was ahead of her time in providing guidelines for frontline employees struggling with ethical dilemmas. She offers real-world examples of how workers are expected to go along to get along--and how that can jeopardize their careers and make them vulnerable to legal action. The book is very readable and the average person can easily relate to the stories she tells. Most important, she offers usable advice for handling touchy situations. I interviewed Nan several years ago and continue to use her book as a reference when writing about business ethics. I hope she'll consider writing an encore--especially in light of the recently publicized corporate scandals.
Very Useful.......2000-11-24
I got this book at a discount table and almost put it down when I realized it was geared toward office professionals ( I work in social services) and I am so glad I decided to risk it. The scenarios she uses, as well as the tips she gives, fit for all sorts of people in a variety of fields. The book is well written and easy to read and understand.
More useful than $5,000 worth of ethics seminars........1997-07-02
This is the only book on business ethics I've found that skips the preaching and focuses on the practical. Office romance, confidentiality, loyalty, harassment, deception, games -- it's all here. This is, I think, the missing link between the lofty-sounding corporate values statements and the day-to-day behaviors that affect customers, vendors, and coworkers. DeMars says that doing the right thing on a personal level is the smartest, shortest path to a more profitable enterprise. She shares more than 100 true-life scenarios from her consulting experiences to support her points. For example, she tackles the tough questions of when is it OK to lie, when and how do you hold someone accountable for his/her behavior, and how can managers and subordinates recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas. Managers need this book as much as office assistants. Finally, I found the style of writing very readable and credible. I've attended a half-dozen expensive seminars for senior managers that lauded ethical business practices, but they were too long on theory and overlooked the implementation at the office level. The devil really is in the details when it comes to making decisions about behaviors, says DeMars. She gets it right, right away. This book would have saved -- and will save me -- lots of money and time. A very solid piece of work

Ruby is a Gem!.......2006-10-05
I was interested in the other reviews of this book--and surprised at their lukewarm and even hostile attitudes. It would seem you either like Ruby Wax's wild and outrageous sense of humor or you don't. And if you're American, which I am, you might take offense at some of her well thought-out potshots at the USA, but only if you takes things so personally that you can't laugh at your own country. In which case, steer clear of Ruby.
I read this book in one sitting--it was something I regretted ending. There are passages that are so funny (like her excursion to Disneyland) that I was in physical pain from laughing so much. There are also sadder passages recounting the loss and difficulty she went through in coming to terms with the abusive upbringing she had at the hands of her eccentric but mad parents. What comes through is that she came through all of it, on a different continent, fulfilling her dreams to act (despite all the ugly things her parents told her about her lack of talent). For that reason this book is ultimately uplifting and positive. It is a sometimes raucously funny account of one very talented person's survival at the hands of utterly insane parents. Well done!
And in regards to Girls on Top, I think it is fantastic--not the same as AbFab, but quite spot on. I cross my fingers that we will see more of Ruby in the future.
Ruby Wax is entertaining; this book, not so much........2005-11-08
I bought "How Do You Want Me?" after hearing a hilarious and touching interview with Wax on Terry Gross's "Fresh Air." A die hard Ab Fab fan (of which Wax is the script editor) I knew Wax only from her camero appearances on that show and her role in the not-so-funny Girls on Top.
She's not much of a writer and the book itself is mostly a series of short statements with very little reflection or insight. As a speaker, she's hilarious and gives a lot of character to what she's written, but the book itself is pretty dry.
Her experiences are varied and interesting and there are some fun moments, so buy the book if you already like her and you can find the book used for cheap.
Behind the mask.......2004-07-24
I've been a Ruby Wax fan for many years but it wasn't until I read this book that I began to understood the wellspring of her often aggressive humour.
Like so many clowns, her mask conceals a troubled soul. It took her many years to realise she needed help. I suspect writing this book was part of the therapy.
The book is a mixture of laughter and sadness, and as we share her journey towards self understanding, the latter emotion becomes dominant. Nevertheless, it was well worth reading and I particularly recommend it to anyone who has suffered at the hands of overbearing and deprecating parents.
Good in parts, but ultimately very disappointing.......2004-07-01
Ruby Wax, who is she? An American actress who became famous in Britain for being a loud-mouth American actress. As an actress, she was of little account: background wench in RSC productions and so forth. As a loud-mouthed American broad on UK TV - specialises in celebrity interviews with the likes of Pamela Anderson - she keeps the Brits entertained: vulgarity upon vulgarity. This book is good (even very funny in parts) where Wax deals with her bizarre US upbringing, with monstrous parents whom she mocks and lambasts and serves up to the readers as if they are freaks in a side-show. This is funny, up to a point. The point being that one starts to think she is exploiting mom and dad. As for Ruby the adult, nothing much to say. She is a hopeless attention-seeker of little talent. It's the family story that is memorable because she lays into mom and dad with such gusto. Despite all she writes, dad has the last laugh, though. He can never quite believe that his nutty, runty daughter has been a success in Britain; for no one has heard of her in the US. Finally on a visit to London one of Ruby's celebrity Brit pals proves to dad that she is a hit, saying she has done x, y and z. His wonderful deadpan reply (paraphrased): "Well, what do they know in Britain, anyway? They haven't got any real celebrities to measure Ruby against. In America, we've got Sinatra." Well, quite.

Great Help.......2007-01-11
Having no knowledge of code, this book was great. I created my whole site with code...rather than having dreamweaver create it for me! I would recommend it to anyone just learning about website creation.
Great for the beginner!.......2007-01-04
I purchased this book for an Introduction to Web course and found it to be an excellent resource. Some chapters are more detailed than others but overall, it was extremely helpful. There are lots of examples throughout the book as well as excellent chapter reviews. I would highly recommend this book to anyone just starting out learning HTML.
The best!!!.......2004-06-04
Nothing better than that book. I wasn't able to understand how frames work but within couple of hours of reading chapter 10, frames became a piece of cake!!!!
Thanks for the excellent work!
NOT for the Beginner.......2004-01-03
I have just finished the first two modules and let me tell you that if you are a pure beginner to HTML, DO NOT get this book. Module two is very confusing with very few examples for the beginner. I have been designing pretty decent web pages (www.pacificlittleleague.org) with MS Frontpage 2002 and wanted to learn HTML so I could advance to using javascript & flash. This book was a mistake purchase. It is not for the beginner. I have read all of the other comments that convinced me to buy this book, and all I can say is that maybe this would be a good book if you have already dabbled in some HTML. If you look at some of the test questions at the end of module 2, such as #9 which asks about the proper XHTML format for closing the hr tag, you will find that she hasn't even covered the tag hr yet. In # 11 it asks to rewrite "the text below" so that it doesn't show up on a web page - and then there is no text shown that could be rewritten. The author really needs to get in a frame of mind to that of a true beginner if she is going to sell this book as a beginner book.
A Masterpiece.......2003-11-21
I needed a relatively quick way to learn how to construct a custom web page for my Computer-Help website, and this book did not disappoint.
I just finished the book today, and I can now use basic Javascript, tables, frames (don't use them!), and basic CGI scripts.
All the information you need to go from beginner to intermediate is here. I highly recommend this book as the most painless means of acquiring a working knowledge of HTML.
Some things this book does not cover are ASP, PHP, and the like, which is understandable. There are only so many pages available.
