Book Description
Designed for courses in Music, this established text introduces the contrapuntal style of 17th and 18th century music through analysis and writing. While a limited understanding of contrapuntal elements may be gained through analysis alone, these elements are grasped in a more intimate way through the actual writing of contrapuntal examples. Also, by linking the study of counterpoint to music of a specific period, the text provides a clear model for students to emulate and a definite basis for the criticism of student work.
Customer Reviews:
Errata: musical example.......2007-06-27
The first musical example for Chapter 3 should be an excerpt from Bach's Two-Part Invention, No.11. It is not, as the reader will quickly discover when the text talks about a "lower voice" that simply doesn't exist! This is not a huge problem, since the correct measures are shown soon after (in Example 5). But it could be confusing at first.
Classic work on counterpoint.......2005-10-28
George Oldroyd's book The Technique and Spirit of Fugue is the best book on fugue composition but it's out of print and VERY expensive. So, by default, Kent Kennan's book is the best reference book a composer can buy for a basic overview of counterpoint. If you already have a year or two of music theory (you know about modulations, sonata forms, and basic part-writing) you can, literally, just start working from this book with Bach as a companion text and start teaching yourself how to write fugues.
Kennan's book is helpful because while mostly covering Baroque counterpoint he covers the topic in a way that lets a student expand on the contrapuntal principles into other styles. If you're going to get just one book on counterpoint make this the book.
Still the best basic counterpoint text.......2005-03-08
Having taught counterpoint for about twenty years, I can honestly say this is still the best textbook available on the subject. Along the way I tried a number of "newer" texts, but my classes always met with more success using Kennan. The workbook that accompanies this book is a must for anyone who wants to master the art of eighteenth-century counterpoint. To be honest, you also need a teacher to evaluate your progress.
recommended.......1999-03-28
This is the most practical and efficient counterpoint textbook for class room use, the textbook I would use if I were to teach counterpoint in the class room. It is clear and concise and to the point. To gain a broader understanding of counterpoint, I recommend this work be supplemented with Walter Piston's COUNTERPOINT. I also recommend PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

Intuitive and Systematic.......2004-03-15
This book isn't aimed at teaching music theory. Is about learning to sight sing and acquiring all the skills associated with that (pitch recognition, music dictation, etc.). The step by step approach is systematic. It starts with recognising and singing simple patterns first in major then in minor keys. The recognition of pitch is covered in tandem with learning to cope with increasingly complex rhythms. I've tried a few books and I find that the approached used here is the most intuitive I've come across. It's possible that different systems appeal to different people. I'm a choral singer with a basic grounding in music theory but my sight singing skills were poor. I don't think you need much music expertise to use this book other than the ability to read notes and key signatures. Ideally I would like to see this published in a workbook format (instead of a hard bound book) which could be left open easily on a music stand or at the piano.
As a music theory book, I wouldn't recommend it..........2001-07-20
Since I live in a rural area, this was the only book on theory in the local bookstore. I bought without knowing much theory. Now I know a great deal more theory, but not because of this book. It's definitely not a book to read through and expect to learn anything. The material is very condensed, and seems like it is only meant to be a guide to an instructor. Now that I know some theory, the first half makes sense, but I couldn't have learned theory from the book without someone walking me through it. The solfege exercises look like they would be good, but I didn't buy it for them at all. I only wanted a basic book on theory that I could work through myself. Obviously, this wasn't the book.
Book Description
Designed as an introductory text for upper-level undergraduates and beginning graduate students, Analysis of Tonal Music: A Schenkerian Approach explains the fundamental principles of Schenkerian analysis by focusing on the music itself. Intended for use in one- or two-semester courses on Schenkerian theory, this text will also appeal to individuals interested in Schenker's work. The book assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, but it does require a background in harmony and voice leading; a familiarity with species counterpoint is also desirable. The authors develop Schenkerian techniques through the practical analysis of specific compositions, an approach that parallels the evolution of Schenker's work. The book explains structural principles in actual composition rather than through models and formulas, and teaches students how to think about and critically examine compositions in ways that will inform their understanding and performance of great compositions of Western art music. The first part of the volume provides the foundation for the analysis of complete pieces and includes chapters on melody, bass-line structures, linear techniques, and the essential properties of the Ursatz and its basic elaborations; the presentation of complete compositions in Part II is organized by formal category. The concluding chapter summarizes the main theoretical issues of Schenker's approach. The book includes over 200 analytical graphs, musical examples, and a bibliography. Analysis of Tonal Music: A Schenkerian Approach provides a unique and accessible introduction to Schenkerian analytical ideas and shows how they can be applied toward a better understanding of tonal music.
Customer Reviews:
Best introduction to Schenkarian Analysis.......2005-09-01
I agree whole hearted with Perry's review, but give this book 5 Stars as it really is the best introduction to this subject. The book is clear and well laid out but it could benefit with more details on larger forms and completed analyses. That being said you should be able to tackle Schenker's books and analyse, and get into Salzer's Structrual Hearing and Forte's work after completing this book.
I honest felt I had a better understanding of music form and structure after using this book, and this of course is the point of Schenkarian Analysis, it's not just a thoery, it is supposed to be useful in understanding musical form and structure; which is easily forgotten with other books on the subject.
Schenkerian analysis text strong on presentation, conten.......1998-07-28
This text is intended for graduate students in music (and perhaps for advanced undergraduates as well). It replaces Allen Forte and Steven Gilbert's Schenker text of ca. 1979 as an authoritative introduction to the themes and tools of Schenker's way of looking at the music of the Western Classical tradition. Long considered a "secret code" impenetrable to outsiders, Schenkerian analysis has at last been accepted as defining the mainstream of music theory in this country, thanks to the widespread availability since the '80s of English translations of his most important books, _Harmonielehre_, _Kontrapunkte_, the _Five Graphic Analyses_, and Schenker's late summary of his techniques and theories, _Der Freie Satz_. Cadwallader and Gagne succeed where Forte and Gilbert failed to find a clear, uncluttered style of presentation and a tone that is suited to the level of preparation one is likely to find among the target student population. A good test of this boo! k's success is that it is _almost_ usable by students with little or no prior specialized background; it succeeds to a remarkable degree in making Schenkerian theory a tool for musicians at large, rather than for specialists. A glossary of specialized terms would have been useful, as well as more extensive treatment of certain topics such as mixture about which Schenker had quite idiosyncratic ideas, but all in all this is a teacher-friendly, student-friendly contribution to the study of music theory which should be known to everyone in the discipline.
Customer Reviews:
worth the effort.......2000-06-19
This is a patient but tremendously technical introduction to a very complex musical tradition. The author studied with and quotes several fine and well-known Ghanaian drummers; the text is overwhelmed with detailed and difficult musical examples (performed on the enclosed CD). With time and effort, the lessons can form the foundation for a very rewarding African drumming experience.

The Man Comes Around: The Spiritual Journey of Johnny Cash
ASIN: 156025629X |
Book Description
The boxed set Unearthed, released shortly after Johnny Cash’s death in September 2003, contains a version of Cash’s classic song “The Caretaker” in which he asks, “Who’s gonna cry when old John dies?” The answer to that question is the millions of fans, admirers, and fellow musicians who have felt the power of Cash’s words and voice for the past six decades. His many recordings rank among the best in country music history. Up to the days preceding his death, Cash continued to write and record. Hundreds of his songs, including “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues” are among the bedrock of the country music canon. Cash’s songs tell stories of hope, despair, vengeance, lust, God, greed, violence, repentance, and love. His late recordings garnered him two Grammys and an MTV Music Award, and his final studio album went gold. His collaboration with Rick Rubin and American Records built bridges between generations and musical styles: working with singers like Nick Cave, Fiona Apple, and Joe Strummer, and covering songs by Nine Inch Nails, Glen Danzig, and Soundgarden, Cash’s last records found thousands of young, loyal listeners who wouldn’t otherwise consider themselves fans of country music.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners...........2006-05-06
I bought this because I'm starting to learn to play an acoustic guitar. This music is written for organs, pianos and electric keyboards but it's so easy to read, I can use the same notes. It has all the lyrics of the songs too. This song book would be great for people who have a hard time seeing notes.... these are nice and big. I love Johnny Cash and June Carter's music and to be about to start with something so simple like this, is great.
Nice collection, but make sure you know what you're buying........2006-02-03
This item's description is ambiguous, so I want to point to people that it is NOT a book-length analysis or appreciation of Cash's songs, it is merely a COLLECTION OF HIS LYRICS, categorised by the editor. The introduction is interesting and well-written, but can be read easily with Amazon's preview feature without purchasing.

African Rhythm and African Sensibility: Aesthetics and Social Action in African Musical Idioms
ASIN: 0521616018 |
Book Description
In this detailed study Simha Arom takes a new and original approach to the understanding of the complex and sophisticated patterns of polyphony and polyrhythm that characterise African music. Considering in particular the harp, sanza, xylophone and percussion music of Central Africa, Simha Arom develops a rigorous method for the analysis of the music and for the recording and deciphering of the many strands of polyphony and polyrhythm. Through a systematic breakdown of the many layers of apparently improvised rhythm he reveals the essential structure which underlies this rich and complex music. Inspired also by linguistic techniques, Professor Arom regards the music very much as a grammatical system.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough and multifaceted coverage of a fascinating topic.......2000-03-28
Arom's treatment of African music is fantastic. The reader will benefit from Arom's direct experiences with African music in many ways. Not only does he provide musical transcriptions, but also discusses the equipment and techniques used for recording. He also discusses the social aspects of the music, which are inseparable from it. There is a large section in which he shares the results of his musical analysis--specifically, the ways in which he categorizes African music based on their rhythmic activity. He creates his own analytical methdologies and creates very specific terminology to describe the rhythmic structures found in African music. As a graduate student in music theory I found this book very helpful in my research and analysis of composers who try to emulate the rhythmic structures and phenomena found in African music. It's a terrific resource.

Book Description
The knowledge that finales are by tradition (and perhaps also necessarily) 'different' from other movements has been around a long time, but this is the first time that the special nature of finales in instrumental music has been examined comprehensively and in detail. Three main types of finale, labelled 'relaxant', 'summative', and 'valedictory', are identified. Each type is studied closely, with a wealth of illustration and analytical commentary covering the entire period from the Renaissance to the present day. The history of finales in five important genres -- suite, sonata, string quartet, symphony, and concerto -- is traced, and the parallels and divergences between these traditions are identified. Several wider issues are mentioned, including narrativity, musical rounding, inter-movement relationships, and the nature of codas. The book ends with a look at the finales of all Shostakovich's string quartets, in which examples of most of the types may be found.

The average working American has very little time or opportunity to express his/her views regarding the events that occur daily. Only exceptional writers, sports figures, actors and politicians are asked to express their opinions regarding subjects of interest to the public. Little attention is paid to the unknown and knowledgeable people who do not have access to the media or to the politicians who frequently ignore the average American and his/her views. As an educator, I feel that it is my responsibility to express opinions that are shared by many other people who have been and continue to be stifled by their own circumstances and/or limitations.

Book Description
Most of us remember Rose Marie as the wisecracking Sally Rogers on The Dick Van Dyke Show, or recognize her from her perch in the top middle square on Hollywood Squares, but her career in show business has spanned almost seventy years.
At the tender age of three Rose Marie Mazzetta was entered in an amateur contest at New York City's Mecca Theatre. Her rendition of "What Can I Say Dear, After I Say I'm Sorry?" won, and her career was launched. She stayed "Baby Rose Marie" until she was well into her teens, singing in nightclubs, on vaudeville stages, on the radio, and in the movies.
It was a glamorous but difficult lifeshe worked side by side with legends such as Al Jolson, Milton Berle, and W.C. Fields, and was watched over by "Uncle" Al Capone and his associatesbut her father managed her career and personal life with an iron fist, gambling her earnings away and abusing her and any boy foolish enough to show an interest in the family meal ticket.
Rose Marie married trumpeter Bobby Guy in 1946 and continued as a singer and nightclub entertainer. She soon established a second career on the small screen, most prominently as Sally on the legendary Dick Van Dyke Show, a groundbreaking role for which she earned three Emmy nominations and which continues to gather new fans from reruns on TV Land. Her fourteen years on Hollywood Squares and recent guest spots on such hit shows as Murphy Brown and Caroline in the City have kept her in the spotlight.
With candor and humor, Rose Marie tells of her many years in the entertainment world. Her behind-the-scenes look at show business is replete with intimate stories of household names from Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Broadway.

Hold The Roses---The Best Book I Have Ever Read!!!.......2007-06-14
This book is great! I have read many books and this is one of the best! I highly recommend it to any Rose Marie fan! I had only seen her in "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and had no idea so many things had happened to her before that!! Rose Marie tells an entertaining story that always has a joke to keep you very entertained! Great Job Rose Marie!!!!
Pleasing "thank you note" to her fans.......2006-02-07
Rose Marie did a great job writing her memoirs. I heard rumors that this book would be bitter, but it's actually a sweet thank you note to her fans. But, I wish there was a way to find a cd of her singing in the thirties.
Highly Recommend this Page Turner!.......2003-10-31
From beginning to end this is one of those books that is difficult to put down. It was great to learn about Rose Marie's life and career before and after she played the part she is best known for (to me anyway), "Sally Rogers" on "The Dick Van Dyke Show". The love story between her and her beloved husband was magical and could she be any more proud of her daughter?! Reading and learning about the various celebrities (including the notorious ones) with whom she worked and was acquainted was quite interesting. Like some others have mentioned, I would have liked to read more about her time with the DVD show, but maybe she will favor us with a second book based on that experience!
Semi-enjoyable.......2003-08-04
Interesting book for the most part although more time should have been spent about "The Dick Van Dyke Show". I was very disappointed with the way she ended the book however. To keep everyone guessing about the black bow and then to say it is a secret is disgraceful.
Couldn't put this book down!.......2003-06-17
I am an avid biography/autobiography reader. This book was a delight to read. Rose Marie tells about the many aspects of her life. Her childhood and her years as a nightclub singer were especially interesting. This book is a must for any Dick Van Dyke Show fan. I wish this book would be more heavily promoted and available to readers. It's the best autobiography I've read in a long time.

Good love story set in Key West.......2003-09-23
Meg and Don Duncan are two lawyers from Washington, DC. But when Meg's beloved Uncle Win dies unexepectedly, and leaves them his houseboat in Key West, the Duncans, intrigued, decide to pack up their careers and move there.
In Key West, they meet several exciting new people, including a little girl, Calliope, whose wealthy parents don't seem to pay much attention to her. Don is happy to have retired from the law, and begins to develop a new interest in local horticulture. But Meg misses being a lawyer, and wonders how she can ease back into being an attorney with their new lifestyle. Also, Calliope's presence awakens the childless Duncans to the possibility of becoming parents themselves. How will they resolve their issues?
I really enjoyed this book! The colorful background of Key West added a special element to this story. It makes me want to visit this city. Although I thought the dialogue was a little slick in places, ("Right on the bell for snacktime"), I still think this book has a lot going for it. Highly recommended.

Beautiful romance set in Venice.......2003-09-27
Clark and Maddy Whelan married practically out of high school, and have spent most of their marriage paying off his late father's business debts. Clark runs a struggling greenhouse, while Maddy sells a line of natural cosmetics and housecleaners. They also have twin daughters to support, but their family life is happy. Maddy's hobby of entering contests is an interesting sideline.
Then, Maddy wins a contest by writing a slogan for an aluminum foil product --and the first prize is half a million dollars and a trip to Venice. Suddenly, the Whelans are freed from debt, and all their dreams become possible. They fly to Venice, and meet fascinating and glamorous people. But the worry that their new lifestyle will corrupt their wholesome values begins to surface. Will they overcome this fear?
I thought this story was enjoyable. The Venice background is beautiful and opulent. Clark and Maddy discover that you can meet good people in the most unexpected of places. This leads into a surprise for their family -- something Maddy had not seriously considered before-- and a heartwarming conclusion. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Great book on JMS.......2004-10-08
I've been working with WebSphere for over 5 years (since the beginning) and this was still worth reading. Great book full of examples, step-by-step "labs". This is focused on WebSphere and MQ, but will be very helpful to those who wants to use MQ with any other J2EE server. If you are not MQ and not WebSphere user - this still will be helpful since it has great deal of JMS basics, but you will have to use your vendor's tutorials and examples instead of those in the book. Concepts are still the same.
Decent book for JMS.......2004-09-25
This is a very decent book for JMS. It works out well to learn the basics. It goes into good depth on the basics. After the basics your pretty much on your own for getting too advanced.
An excellent way to learn JMS!.......2004-07-31
This book makes the process of learning JMS easy for all skill levels. Dr. Yusuf provides real-world examples in a language that is down to earth. He has assembled its content into sections for someone just learning JMS while providing code samples for the seasoned developer. I found the "how to" diagrams extremely helpful when configuring Enterprise JMS in WebSphere. This is a must have for anyone interested in JMS and how it's applied in an IBM WebSphere environment. This is an excellent book!
An extremely useful, practical and well-written book on JMS.......2004-07-24
I found this book extremely useful. It is practical, well-written and provides the necessary ancillary information required to understand the topics. The author builds up nicely from messaging, to JMS basics, advanced JMS topics, IBM JMS offerings, hands-on scenarios(which bring it all together, especially for people who learn by doing), and deployment. In addition, throughout the book, the author provides implementation considerations, recommendations and best practices, which will be of great value to designers and developers alike.
Awesome comprehensive work !!.......2004-07-23
Dr Yusuf has done a great job in pulling together many areas of technology into a comprehensive work addressing JMS as well as the role of messaging in a WebSphere/WAS environment. I have been working with WAS as well as WebSphere MQ for a number of years and this book is a must buy for developers looking to integrate applications with JMS or exploring/developing with the messaging features of WAS. Well done!!!
