I've read a number of books about Bill Monroe over the years and this is the best. It is written by one who wore "the hat" and toured and recorded with Big Mon for two years. The reader benefits from an insider's perspective of what it was really like being around Monroe, not only working with him on the road and in the studio but even on his farm, mending fences and such. Bob Black is a good writer, serious and humorous at times and well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Book that takes you to the heart of the 50s "Beat" scene........1998-03-24

This is a wonderful book filled with images of the beat coffeehouse hangouts in Greenwich village circa 50s and 60s. It is great to actually be able to view a photo of a poetry reading as it took place in one of these bohemian haunts. We are lucky that the author had the foresight to take photos in the smoke-filled coffeehouses and beat pads. I have a coffeehouse and the book is a great reference to utilize when trying to recapture the spirit and styling of the 50s coffeehouse.

5 out of 5 stars "Beat Generation" worthy addition to any Beat collection.......1996-12-31

McDarrah's photograpic work evokes what it must have been like to frequent the bohemian scene of the late '50s and early '60's. Anyone who is greatly interested in the literature of this genre, but too young to have actual remembrances of this era, will find this work fascinating. Many of the photos have never been published before, and thus are a refreshing change from the standard photos of Kerouac, Ginsberg, and crew that have been served up so many times elsewhere. McDarrah, who I believe worked for the Village Voice at that time, has done a fine job in selecting the photos in this collection. My favorites are one of Diane DiPrima, perched on a piano reciting her poetry, and Herbert Huncke visiting Allen Ginsberg and attempting to fix the latter's broken TV. I also enjoyed the many pics of other accomplished, but lesser known figures of the era, and the establishments they frequented, such as the Cedars Bar & Grill

5 out of 5 stars Best Java Security Book for J2EE and Web Services........2007-09-23

This is a great book - by far the best security design book for Java and J2EE (including Java SE 6 and Java EE 5) I have read to date. When I first heard about my coworkers talking about this book, I thought "oh great, another J2EE book!" Much to my surprise, this book is not just a how-to security API or patterns recipe book but much more than that - I see it as a collection of valuable suggestions and examples on how to choose security mechanisms and use them in J2EE applications and web services. Moreover, it tells you what the bestpractices, pitfalls and tradeoffs are for each design pattern option you take. Particularly, You will find this book as an ideal companion for CORE J2EE PATTERNS - Deepak Alur et al, which is my favorite for designing J2EE applications.

This book is as close to size of a pillow and I do understand why the authors gave only code snippets for selected examples instead of full implementation. The case study is just right, it discusses the scenario and how to incorporate the patterns right in to the application design..which is just right for a Java developer who is involved with Java enterprise applications and web services. The best practices and security checklist detailed in this book - helps a lot during development and when you want to deploy a J2EE application/web service in production.

Having said that, I prefer this book as a must-have for any serious Java developer/designer/architect who wants to build Security from understanding basics of WHAT and know WHY you should architect your J2EE system in a particular way using best practices (a long list) and not just HOW. Ultimately you will find this book as an onestop reference for building security in J2EE applications and web services.

4 out of 5 stars Java security made easy. Excellent title worth investing on........2007-09-18

If you ever want to understand about security and its role in the development of J2EE enterprise-level applications, then you should consider buying this book from your local bookstore.

The authors have done an excellent job in explaining the basics of security as it applies to the most common business practices, as well as deliver intricate details on the inner workings of the Java platform security architecture. Even though this book covers in its majority Java technologies, you don't have to be a Java developer or architect to appreciate it.

The book is divided in 7 major parts:

Part 1: Introduction and Basics of Security

Part 2: Java Security Architecture and Technologies

Part 3: Web Services Security and Identity Management

Part 4: Security Design Methodology, Patterns, and Reality Checks

Part 5: Design Strategies and Best Practices

Part 6: Putting it all together

Part 7: Personal Identification using Smart Cards and Biometrics

Parts 1-5 provide reams of detail about the fundamentals of security, the J2EE security architecture, and the technologies used to enable Web services security. In addition, there is a comprehensive explanation of patterns and practices for J2EE developers, as well as design strategies and best practices for securing J2EE Web components and web-based applications.

Web developers might want to pay special attention to Part 3 of the book because it gives an insight on fortifying Web services, authenticating and authorizing end users, and applying the latest cryptographic techniques. XML is described in detail as the encoding for messages between parties using a Web Service.

Note that this book does not explain the specific JAVA APIs needed for basic J2EE application development. Twenty-three proven security architectural patterns are discussed and presented through several realistic scenarios, covering architecture and implementation and presenting detailed sample code.

Part 6 of the book describes how to use this newly acquired knowledge in the implementation of real-world security scenarios.

Finally, we found the last part of this book as the most intriguing. It provides an in-depth coverage on Personal Identification using Smart Cards and Biometrics, their role in physical and logical access control, and the different technologies used in their implementation. Best practices and common pitfalls that might arise when implementing security using smart cards and biometrics are also discussed.

Overall we believe this is excellent book for the security enthusiast who wants to build robust end-to-end security into J2EE enterprise applications.

5 out of 5 stars Excellenet book for Java Security architects.......2007-07-22

Like any Sun core book, this "reference" manual is cut above the rest. Personally I use it more as a reference manual helping me to understand and design security requirements for a project.

5 out of 5 stars The reference book of the java security.......2007-07-19

A fantastic book that each java developer should have. Today, the security is becoming a real requirement of each java based enterprise application, and this book, in my opinion, represents the best reference. It is a very exhaustive and complete book for both beginner and advanced levels.

3 out of 5 stars I don't think this is an awesome book.......2007-05-09

I am amazed by the 5 star ratings everybody has given this book! And I have implemented several enterprise level security implementations/integrations supporting hundres of thousands of users.

In my opinion, this book is really feeding the buzzwords frenzy of security domain. It certainly "talks the talk", but can it "walk the talk"?

I can think of numerous glaring examples where the book falls short. To name a few:
                        - Smart Cards (lots of power point and management level sales fluff here)
                        - JAAS (I have seen it being described much better in fewer words)
                        - SAML (huh?)

I think the book does a below average job of providing practical information. Even the content does not flow very smoothly and coherently.

                        Book Description

When creating complex Java enterprise applications, do you spend a lot of time thumbing through a myriad of books and other resources searching for what you hope will be the API that's right for the project at hand? Java Database Best Practices rescues you from having to wade through books on each of the various APIs before figuring out which method to use! This comprehensive guide introduces each of the dominant APIs (Enterprise JavaBeans, Java Data Objects, the Java Database Connectivity API (JDBC) as well as other, lesser-known options), explores the methodology and design components that use those APIs, and then offers practices most appropriate for different types and makes of databases, as well as different types of applications. Java Database Practices also examines database design, from table and database architecture to normalization, and offers a number of best practices for handling these tasks as well. Learn how to move through the various forms of normalization, understand when to denormalize, and even get detailed instructions on optimizing your SQL queries to make the best use of your database structure. Through it all, this book focuses on practical application of these techniques, giving you information that can immediately be applied to your own enterprise projects. Enterprise applications in today's world are about data-- whether it be information about a product to buy, a user's credit card information, or the color that a customer prefers for their auto purchases. And just as data has grown in importance, the task of accessing that data has grown in complexity. Until now, you have been left on your own to determine which model best suits your application, and how best to use your chosen API. Java Database Practices is the one stop reference book to help you determine what's appropriate for your specific project at hand. Whether it's choosing between an alphabet soup of APIs and technologies--EJB, JDO, JDBC, SQL, RDBMS, OODBMS, and more on the horizon, this book is an indispensable resource you can't do without.

                        3 out of 5 stars Mixed.......2004-09-18

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I really liked the discussion of persistence models using J2EE. It was a great tutorial on the various options a J2EE developer has when dealing with databases. On the other hand, I'm disappointed that there wasn't more lower level type discussions. I ended the book feeling as if the "best practice" in Java database development is to avoid direct database development altogether and let an application server deal with it for me.

I develop standalone client/server type database applications more than anything else. I very rarely touch an application server. And unfortunately, only 2 or 3 chapters in this book were useful to me. Everything else was application server specific.

If you're doing straight JDBC development, skip this book and go for a pure JDBC book, as you'll not really get anything new or useful here. If you develop web applications, this book is definitely right up your alley.

                        3 out of 5 stars Has a rushed-to-press feel.......2003-12-15

This book has the potential to become a "must have" book in a future edition. But the current edition has the feel of a book that was rushed to press without really being ready. Some of the best practices are not well explained or even explained at all. Occasionally, they are not worded carefully enough or even seem to contradict each other. The syntax errors (which are more common in the tutorial chapters) highlight this rushed feel.

Overall, though, I think the book has useful content, and I learned some neat stuff from it. I'm hoping that another, more carefully written and reviewed edition gets published.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been called "Review and Comparison of Java ...".......2003-09-10

This book barely scratches the surface of the persistence domain.
There is a review and brief comparison of different approaches but by no means an in-depth account for each.

Still searching for that perfect book...

                        5 out of 5 stars A good choice.......2003-08-16

I really like reading this book. This book discusses a lot of database concepts. The author talks about how to use the javax.sql libraries. I found the book easy to read. I found the snippets of code useful. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn advanced concepts on databases with JAVA.

5 out of 5 stars A good source of advised best pracitce.......2003-08-12

I have just seriously reading the chapters about EJB, JDBC, Servlet and JSP, I found that there are some tricks I have used but I have not stated the reason, this book provides some short and brief reasoning for each tips to clarify why I need to do and not to do. It is very handy to me, even I explained that to my associate consultants, I don't need a long conversation. I believe the author does not mean we need to follow the best practice but hope that developers/architect can outline a set of standard/practice for the development. It is the main reason for us to read. If you have your own standard, programmer A has his/her own style, then it is hard to trace and maintain the system.

                        Book Description

Java developers typically go through four "stages" in mastering Java. In the first stage, they learn the language itself. In the second stage, they study the APIs. In the third stage, they become proficient in the environment. It is in the fourth stage --"the expert stage"-- where things really get interesting, and Java Enterprise Best Practices is the tangible compendium of experience that developers need to breeze through this fourth and final stage of Enterprise Java mastery. Crammed with tips and tricks, Java Enterprise Best Practices distills years of solid experience from eleven experts in the J2EE environment into a practical, to-the-point guide to J2EE. Java Enterprise Best Practices gives developers the unvarnished, expert-tested advice that the man pages don't provide--what areas of the APIs should be used frequently (and which are better avoided); elegant solutions to problems you face that other developers have already discovered; what things you should always do, what things you should consider doing, and what things you should never do--even if the documentation says it's ok. Until Java Enterprise Best Practices, Java developers in the fourth stage of mastery relied on the advice of a loose-knit community of fellow developers, time-consuming online searches for examples or suggestions for the immediate problem they faced, and tedious trial-and-error. But Java has grown to include a huge number of APIs, classes, and methods. Now it is simply too large for even the most intrepid developer to know it all. The need for a written compendium of J2EE Best Practices has never been greater. Java Enterprise Best Practices focuses on the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) APIs. The J2EE APIs include such alphabet soup acronyms as EJB, JDBC, RMI, XML, and JMX.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty solid book with a lot of breadth and fair bit of depth.......2006-07-14

This book tries to be a compendium of best practices across a lot of Enterprise Java (JMX, Servlets, JSPs, XML, EJB etc.) and it does succeed quite well. With different authors writing different chapters you get quite an expert view into each area.
Nothing earth shattering here - a good book for those making the transition from programmer to developer or senior developer: stuff you really should know as you write and design your own modules.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered !!.......2004-03-24

An appetizer that leaves you hungry for more.

Patterns and best practices have been around for a long time. They solve problem domains not directly addressed by the language itself ie., repeatable solutions to family of application development issues -- be it architecture, deployment or testing. For a complex platform like J2EE, use of best practices can make or break a project.

Just what the doctor ordered - Java Enterprise Best Practices is a collection nuggets of wisdoms. It is a compendium of idioms classified based on various enterprise Java areas written the most acclaimed authors in the field (Jason Hunter, Bret McLaughlin, Hans Bergsten et al). Ranging from most widely used EJBs to the latest additions such as JMX and JSTL, each chapter presents the reader with most widely accepted norms of using technologies such as - EJB, Servlets, JDBC, XML, RMI, JMX, Internationalization, JSP, JavaMail. Chapters on XML and RMI are the best of the lot.

I was surprised to note the omission of JMS, given that its popularity when compared with other things such as JMX or JSTL. The last chapter on performance tuning lacks depth and reads more like hastily scribbled notes.

Can best practices be argued? Absolutely! The first chapter of the book says just that. It is important to bear that in mind while you read through the chapters.

While a seasoned J2EE developer idioms may find a few things trivial, it is quite a good reference to keep handy if you are developing real-life applications.

Jason Hunter has done it again. His servlet chapter is simply awesome. He offers some really juicy bytes of information. Give the man more chapters. The other chapters are good too. I would give the book five stars but the Performance chapter is worthless. That came as a surprise because I enjoyed Jack Shirazi performance book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent source when time is not on your side.......2003-06-11

This book assumes you have prior knowledge of jsp/java. It's an excellent book especially for someone who needs to have some questions answered while developing an app, i.e how to perform connection pooling using JDBC 3.0. The information is short but precise ; at this level of development, this is what I need. Again, if you're looking for a detailed java book, get a different book. But if you're developing your first app and need a book that 'look over your shoulder', this is definitely the book.

This book unlike other most books is made by Java
experts in their own field. the book assumes prior
knowledge of the topics and does not intend to take
a beginner from ignorance to knowledge.

this book is intended not for beginners but some
experts in the Java domain designing enterprise
level systems or even maintaining them for system
                        performance and ehancements.

The book is well written and all the potential
gotchas and the mistakes commonly done in application
design and development are outlined with appropriate
                        alternate solutions.

The book covers all aspects of java and ejb application
                        development and their best practices.

Overall, this a good book to have and will be used
by experienced java developers and the not so
                        experienced.
