Book Description
Bach's spectacular Goldberg Variations represent a high point in the repertory of keyboard music, particularly for the harpsichord. This book takes a detailed look at how these variations originated, especially in relation to all Bach's ClavierÜbung volumes and late keyboard works, what their exceptionally intricate plan is, what kind of impact they have had, and how their mysterious beauty has been created. This guide to what was at the time the largest and most carefully conceived single work of keyboard music will appeal to students, performers and listeners.
Download Description
Many listeners and players are fascinated by Bach's Goldberg Variations. In this wideranging and searching study, Professor Williams, one of the leading Bach scholars of our time, helps them probe its depths and understand its uniqueness. He considers the work's historical origins, especially in relation to all Bach's Clavier¸bung volumes and late keyboard works, its musical agenda and its formal shape, and discusses significant performance issues. In the course of the book he poses a number of key questions. Why should such a work be written? Does the work have both a conceptual and a perceptual shape? What other music is likely to have influenced the Goldberg and to what extent is it trying to be encyclopedic? What is the canonic vocabulary? How have contemporaries or musicians from Beethoven to the present day seen this work and, above all, how has its mysterious beauty been created?

lessons in Bach and Baroque music.......2005-05-30
The legendary-like story behind Bach's immortal "Goldberg Variations" is told accompanied with fancy, often baroque-like illustrations with golden touches. The musically-talented orphan Johann Gottlieb Goldberg was taken in by a German Count. The Count directs him to play something new for him each week; and then later calls on him to do a "piece filled with dances and difficult runs...canons and something quite new...[and] a surprise that will trick me." To meet this demanding challenge, Johann has to turn to his mentor Bach, whose composition in answer to the Count's demand later came to be named after the orphan. The orphan Johann remains the focus of the tale, with Bach giving him musical information and guidance so that readers learn something about the technicalities and style of the "Goldberg Variations." Ages 4-7.
Book Description
According to legend, this monument of keyboard literature was written for 1 of Bach's students, who played it to soothe and entertain his insomniac master. Starting the theme with a stately Aria, the "Goldbergs" travel through 30 variations, exploring thematic possibilities while showcasing the composer's brilliant sense of motivic possibilities.

This just bored me to no end........2006-04-25
I am a student of philosophy and rhetoric and have spent many hours of my life buried in complicated and dense reading. But this book just takes the cake!
It is not complicated. It is not dense. It is just boring.
The idea is interesting, but Hanley spends too much time on basic philosophy and too little on the relationship of Star Trek and its philosophy. However I am sure a few undergraduates would be comfortably induced into an introductory class with this title.
If you really want to read the book, read it out loud as though it were being presented as a series of lectures. It is much easier to follow.
3 Stars is generous only because I'm a Trekker, and thus, generous.......2005-07-21
Get "The Ethics of Star Trek" instead (and tell author Darling about this better choice for his list!). With this book: wrong question, wrong answer. Data is not a human "being," of course, but he is certainly, as portrayed, a human PERSON. And the real issue regarding Data is not artificial intelligence, but the nature-nurture debate. Data only blossomed in the care of people who loved him. For heaven's sake, can anyone watch "Iin Man" and not be moved?
And all sentient beings should have civil rights. How can that even be questioned? Wasn't this something important that Rodenberry wanted to stress? Of course it was. Star Trek is science, but it is also soul. (And Data could make ya cry with that fiddle of his! And not just by copying!! And that was the point. And Mr. Spiner should think about donning that dang spacesuit again because the fans want him! Is it so annoying to be beloved? And, Data did not overstay his welcome. He is welcome!)
Nuff said,
RM
I want to Burn This book.......2005-03-02
This book is horrible. If I didn't have to read this book for class, I would burn it right now. It is arguing fiction with nonfiction. I think we all know machines aren't human! Don't waste your money unless you idolize Star Trek.
A mixed bag........2002-06-23
First of all, I agree with Murray Moffat that the first part of this book, which dicusses the criteria of personhood (a moral concept) is boring. This is because it is too loosely written. Hanley's discussion seems unfocused; sometimes one paragraph does not seem to follow from another. I still have not figured out what precisely the author concludes about organisms that display linguistic behavior, for instance. His comments on this issue are scattered, and, I believe, are never satisfactorily brought together. Chapters 4 and 5 of Part II constitute by far the best part of the work. In these chapters, Hanley discusses personal identity over time, i.e. synchronic identity, in opposition to diachronic identity, or identity at an instant, discussed in the first part. The first part of the book asks, "How can we identify a person?" and the first two chapters of the second part ask, "How can we identify the SAME person at two different times?" Hanley makes a compelling case (though, ultimately, I cannot agree) in the second part that continuity of psychology or pscychological states must be our guide in determining who is the same person as whom. The final chapter, chapter 6, seems somewhat disconnected from the rest of the book in discussing time travel, though this topic obviously fits with the general theme of the book. It is a satisfying discussion, though not as lively as that in the preceding two chapters. The epilogue seems preachy and entirely out of place, but only comprises a few pages. So, the rating for this book breaks down as follows:
Part I (chapters 1-3): 3 stars
Chapters 4 and 5: 5 stars
Chapter 6: 4 stars
Epilogue: 1 star
Averaging, but discounting the epilogue (since it is so short), we arrive at the rating of 4 stars for the book overall.
Interesting in parts..........2000-08-29
If you're interested in Star Trek _and_ philosophy then this is the book for you! However if you like Star Trek but aren't too fussed about philosophy then you might want to give this one a miss.
I found the first half of this book, discussing what constitutes intelligence and what is "a person", fairly boring. Things picked up a bit when the author moved on to transporters and time travel, but I've got to question some of the authors technical knowledge. He may know lots about philosophy but his physics is a bit shaky at times.
Of course philosophy being such a "hairy-fairy" science (some people don't even class it as a "real" science) it's very hard to argue with the authors conclusions. It's not like you can _prove_ anything, is it?
A much better read are Lawrence Krauss' books "The Physics of Star Trek" and "Beyond Star Trek".

I Hated Star Trek.......2001-01-05
...until I read Richard Hanley's book. I read this book while taking Hanley's Philosophy 102 class and it really helped me understand the basic philosophical questions we were tackling. It also helped me understand why people are so obsessed with the Star Trek shows. It reminded me of Sophie's World-both books teach you about philosophy and get you thinking without boring you to death.
A challenging lecture!.......1998-02-01
Don't be misled by the title: even people who haven't seen the series will really enjoy the contents of this book. The Star Trek universe is used in a very agile way by Hanley to analize quite an interesting number of subjects, offering his point of view, and opening the door for hours of stimulating discussion.
Richard Hanley challenges the reader to reconsider (or perhaps consider seriously for the first time) a number of philosophical issues concerning our existence: what are the basic elements of our human nature (or our personhood); life after death; mind over matter...
Hanley uses the plots of different chapters of ST to make the reader think. It does not matter if the depicted scenarios are not possible with today's technology, because what really is important is the analysis of situations. For instance, as a very small sample of what you will be discussing:
- Willl androids eventually become life forms, with rights of their own?
- Is it possible to alter the past? Is it possible to alter the future?
Finally, a personal contribution for more philosophical discussion. In the episode of Unnatural Selection, we are put face to face with the Fountain of Eternal Youth: the transporter!
It's so simple to use: you store all the physical identity of yourself, say at age 20 (better make some backups too, just in case!), when you have excellent health. Any time in the future, say 20 years after (or every year, suit yourself!), you put yourself in the transporter, and they beam you somewhere (inside the same ship will do just as well!). The only thing that you have to do is ask the operator to rematerialize you using the physical information of yourself at age 20. Voilá!
A very stimulating book indeed!

MCSE Training Kit: Designing Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Security.......2006-07-04
Exactly the info I needed and saved me a ton of money
Excellent Content.......2003-09-21
I think this book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Windows 2000 security. The book is well written, and more detailed than some of the other books that I have seen, and it can easily be used as both a study guide and a desk reference. I passed the exam with real world experience and this book, and I would recommend it to anyone.
Great study guide, but perhaps not the best one!.......2003-01-04
Windows 2000 is a much more secure product than most competing operating systems - if configured right. (Unfortunately, more networks out there are being managed by admins from the "point-and-click" school of systems/network administration.)
This book is a good study guide. However - and this is a trait of many MS Press Study Guides, particularly for the Design tests - they don't have detailed case studies, the kind you see on the real tests.
Coverage of some topics like SMB Signing, Firewalls, etc. is adequate for the test. Proxy Server coverage is overkill - it's a redundant product, and I didn't see its relevance to the test. Being a MS Press book for a MS test, the book is not obiviously not critical of MS products - need to pick up a book like "Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed" - [Joel Scambray & Stuart McClure, ISBN: 0072192623, Osborne McGrawHill] to get that perspective.
Overall, a good book (and a good test - 70-220) to complete your MCSE with and get a more-or-less Microsoft-centric view of Windows 2000 network security. Does give a good overview of most Windows 2000 security features.

Great Book!.......2002-08-25
This is a very easy book to read. The information contained within is very good and the case studies are great too.
Windows 2000 Security is a big topic - and this book covers most of it well. Good enough for the exam.
Buy it!
A must read - even if not planning to take 70-220!!.......2001-11-16
I did not take the exam for 70-220 due to a change in Microsoft policy that upgraded me to W2K MCSE status. However since I already had the book and find security very interesting and important I read it a couple of times. I found it extremely informative, well organized, and understandable. This book is much more than a step by step how to with screen shots manual that so many of the "core four" books seem to be - and you will need to look elsewhere if that is what you need, you will not learn how to install Certificate Services here. Each chapter starts with a network design scenario, presents you the theory/options and ends with the solution. Security relates to almost every action one takes on a W2K network. The first half of the book dealt with the more mundane security topics that most should already know by the time they are preparing for design exams - active directory design, group policies, dns, security groups, and file permissions. However the last half is where you learn the good stuff - ipsec, rras policies and authentication, public key infrastructure including certificate services, internet access, vpn, and securing an extranet with firewalls. I read three different books on 70-216, but this book still taught me a lot, especially about ssl and pki. The explanation of, and how to implement certificate services and smart cards was great. It also explained thoroughly about when to use a private versus public and standalone verus enterprise certificate server. I finally have a good understanding of when to use pptp versus l2tp for a vpn. Ipsec had a whole 50 page chapter devoted to it explaining in detail how to implement it. Page 413 has an excellent explanation on what goes on between a web client and a web server during ssl when logging into a secure website, and page 485 has a terrific and concise table showing all the remote access authentication protocols from Pap to Ms-ChapV2 to Eap-Tls and how to determine which to use for a particular condition and why. The chapter on securing an extranet was loaded with helpful diagrams and charts showing specific protocol/port/address/action settings for a particular firewall setup. Throughout the book there were LOTS of helpful charts and diagrams to accompany the text. I find the "making the decision" tables to be an extremely helpful learning tool - an exam cram type of summary of what was just covered. One side of the table lists what you want to accomplish while the other side lists your options. The end of chapter questions are all challenging "fill in the blank" type based on a mini case study. The answers with an explanation are at the end of the book. I was very impressed with the book. Since security is such an important core concept of networking I highly recommend this study guide to anyone wanting to learn more about Windows 2000 network security.
