This is a great source to have! It is easy to read and covers everything all the major music history text books cover. Overall it is a faster, eaiser, and more interesting read than other texts. World history is also linked with music history to help the reader understand what actually happened. I strongly suggest this book for Graduate students reviewing for comprehensive exams!

This is an excellent chronological overview of the art, music and architecture of the Western world. It's well written and the color illustrations are well chosen and helpful. All in all, it's a good way to brush up on a few thousand years of cultural history in a short time.

Do you know when the music's Baroque Period begins? And when does it finish? And the Romantic Period? And which are the most important composers in these and other Periods? Is J.S. Bach a Baroque composer, or a Classic composer? Which are the styles and techniques in the different Musical Periods? These and other informations you will find them in this well structured book that covers from the music of the old western cultures, until our days. Recommended for all those that want to have a concrete chronology of the events and features in the Music's History.
Great book for review and supplemental information!.......2000-04-22
This book is written in a consise easy-to-follow format and went along perfectly with a music history college class I was taking. I found it half way through the course and used it to review and consolidate information I was confused about and then aced the final! Topics are addressed clearly and musicians and their countries are linked for easy reference and understanding. Fun to read and the lay out makes sense. Good reading.

Obviously, it's a textbook... so what can one say?
The book is definitely one of the prettier ones that sits on my shelf. And if you're a music major (which I assume you would be if you had to buy this book), it's THE definitive music history textbook.

This time is my 3rd time to purchase new edition of A History of Western Music. I studied from 5th edition. This new edition is more easy to study. Fully recommended~
Lots of facts, no analysis.......2006-07-22
When I found what I believe to be the first edition (from 1960) in a thrift store for $1, I had no idea that this was considered the pre-eminent music history textbook. Consequently, I approached it as "pleasure" rather than assigned classroom reading. And I am in full agreement with the assessment that the writing is dry in the extreme - and I admit that I skimmed certain sections rather than reading them all the way through. Compared to the writing of critics such as Donald Tovey, Norman Lebrecht, Alex Ross, Jonathan Saville, or August Kleinzahler, Grout is not "entertaining;" as I explain below, he does not even meet the definition of "critic."
My own systematic introduction to Western art music began with the Baroque period, with a brief mention that there was something called "Gregorian Chant" which preceded it. Grout's treatment is the polar opposite of this approach; he begins with Greek antiquity and proceeds forward through the medieval and renaissance periods in such detail that Bach is not encountered until the book's halfway point. Yet despite this inclusiveness, there is no mention of Hildegard von Bingen, who I had assumed to be a major early Renaissance composer. As an introduction to the field, this may not be the most useful approach; the neophyte may wish for greater concentration on the composers he is more likely to hear. Sensibly, Grout limits his presentation of the 20th century to the giants (Stravinsky, Schoenberg) whose significance was apparent at the halfway point, with brief mentions of others; he may be forgiven his extensive section on Hindemith, who may have appeared more important in the 1950s than he has since become. Nevertheless, I give the book five stars for inclusiveness.
I must temper this position by awarding three stars for the nearly complete absence of any context within which the music took form. Grout not only neglects any discussion of the historical events surrounding the composers; there is no mention of events within the composers' own lives that may have affected their creativity. It is as if the music took form within a vacuum, with no relation to anything except the music that came before it, whether in continued development or opposition. The timeline in the appendix is woefully inadequate in this regard, a mere chronology with no relation other than temporal to the events noted.
It is a modern convention that art is more properly understood through historiographical analysis; that some relationship exists between artistic creativity and the society within which it is created. It goes without saying that an artist's work also springs from his own life experiences. Shostakovich cannot be understood without the awareness that his music was an expression of his opposition to Soviet Communism; it is of interest to note Mozart's complete subservience to his own political environment. If it is unfair to criticize this edition of Grout for not exploring pathways which to us seem obvious, then by the same token, the book is itself subject to historiographic deconstruction. It is valuable not so much as a resource for information on Western art music composers, but as a snapshot of the academic attitude toward those composers current in the 1950s. As I have not read any later editions, I can't comment on whether this deficit has been corrected - but this would have required a complete reorientation of the author's philosophy.
Most inexcusably, Grout concludes with a brief observation of the rift between the public and classical music composers (especially the modern ones), with no thoughts as to the implications this may have on the future of this art form. Again, the music is viewed as existing in a vacuum, unrelated to the world at large and the lives of the composers who created it. This bespeaks the astonishing opinion that Western art music has no importance for anyone outside the small circle of specialists directly concerned with it. It was, and is this very attitude that to a large extent is responsible for the peripheral place this great tradition has in society today, and the risk of its continued marginalization in the future.

A weird and fascinating sociology textbook from 1970.......2007-02-19
`Mixed Bag" is a fascinating memento from 1970, a year in which the Peace and Love vibe of the 60's began to exchange places with the neuroses and disillusionment of the 70s. Its subtitle of "Artifacts from the contemporary culture" is reflected in its contents, which cover really `heavy' themes of Family, Race, Violence, Death etc. The McLuhan-esque fascination with `media studies' peculiar to the early 70s, and its preoccupation with the use of different formats of print media, are embodied in `Mixed Bag'. Each of these chapters incorporates pop culture detritus of one sort or another- comic strips, illustrations, short stories, poems, and essays. Some of the represented authors are well-known (Flannery O'Connor, Randall Jarrell, Philip Wylie, D. H. Lawrence). Baby Boomers looking for nostalgia might be more than a little disconcerted by the strangeness of this book; much of the material is definitely politically incorrect by contemporary standards. For all that, `Mixed Bag' has a sort of warped honesty that is refreshing in this era of bland textbooks that are carefully designed to avoid the slightest chance of provocation.
It's difficult to parse out what curriculum or class "Mixed Bag" was intended for. Author Helene Hutchinson was evidently a faculty member at Kendall College, which could be any one of a number of small liberal arts colleges listed in Google with this name. I suspect the book could have been used for introductory Sociology or Literature or (gasp) that great 70's chestnut "Media Studies".
Only in something from the 1970s could a social studies textbook conclude with a chapter on `Tigers' (?!). That's right; advertisements depicting tigers, a painting of a tiger, a natural history essay on tigers. What the (stoned ) inspiration was for this peculiar coda I can't fathom. But somehow it seems quite in tune with the overall deranged flavor of `Mixed Bag'. If you have a copies of `Sex American Style' and `The Ice Storm' on your bookshelf and maybe The Guess Who, or Blood, Sweat and Tears on your iPod, well, then `Mixed Bag' will be right at home alongside them !

Who really cares what the Times has to say?.......2001-03-03
I can't believe they reissued this book. The first one was full of errors, looked horrible, printed on cheap paper, had horribly hand-drawn charicatures, and was obviously done just to capitalize on the show's popularity. This newer version isn't any better. The real problem is that the pieces are windy, insubstantial, and tepidly boring. If fans want to really immerse themselves in the world of the Sopranos, and get some fantastic writing and insight into the characters -- and the actors who play them -- and get the whole story of the Sopranos, then buy the official companion by Allen Rucker. It's awesome, worth every penny, and it looks like David Chase really had a hand in ensuring that the quality is every bit as good as his show.
Pretty good, but could use more editing.......2000-09-14
It's somewhat obvious that the publisher rushed this book in attempts to capitalize on the incredible popularity of this series.
There are spelling and context errors, and a few general factual errors, that should have been caught in the first editing.
Overall, the information is germane, concise, and pretty well organized. I read the book through and through, and keep it around for when people have questions concerning the show.
A good read for Soprano heads, probably irrelavent to everyone else.
Disappointing.......2000-06-23
Though I respect the NY Times for their cerebral and informative reviews and commentaries, this is not a book that is going to enthrall fans of the show. Bad production value, and it seems like they just put this out to capitalize on the show's prominence. Sure, it's fine to wax poetic about the themes of the show, and its success, but when is David Chase and/or HBO going to come up with a REAL companion book that will satisfy the fans of the show, instead of this limp collection of newspaper clips? My advice -- wait for the official companion, no matter how long it takes to show up in bookstores.

This book is geared toward the both the user and the Tier I & II helpdesk support person who needs immediate familiarity with Windows 2000. It's not for Server Administrators or Developers, nor is it the ultimate reference for troubleshooting. This is a great book to read cover to cover to learn where Microsoft has relocated all of the NT4 functions & services and get the low down on the new bells & whistles they've added to 2000. Most readers could get through 4 or 5 chapters a night because how well it is written and the helpful screen shots Mr. Desmond has included, instead of wading through techno-lingo in a Microsoft manual. The CD is a nice bonus of shareware / freeware.
For Beginners Only.......2000-03-27
The back cover says this book is for the beginner to advanced user. I strongly disagree. It has practically nothing to offer for the intermediate to advanced user. It concentrates too much on the similarities between Windows 2000 and Windows 95/98. Too much time is spent on navigation and use of basic applets and programs; Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are already familiar to most people who have used Windows 95/98 for any length of time, just to mention a couple of examples. The book mentions virtually nothing about one of the most compelling reasons to use Windows 2000 Professional, security. File security and group permissions are glossed over; the functions of the various local groups is completely ignored. New features, such as file encryption and quota management are given no coverage. Installation isn't even covered until Chapter 23, and what is presented is very shallow. If you want to know what is different about Windows 2000 from Windows 95/98 then this book is not for you.

This is the first time I have read a book on an operating system that is actually readable. Well written, informative, packed with useful information.
