Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good workbook-style resource.......2007-08-06

I wrote a review of this and several other books for an upcoming article in Classical Singer Magazine. This is a good workbook-style resource for getting a headstart on your theory; goes from basic to early advanced topics. The only thing I would have liked to see in it was more composition exercises, but that's my bias as a composer.

4 out of 5 stars Good for music fundamentals or review.......2007-07-30

I used this to brush up before taking music theory. It's a decent review of the fundamentals of music. If you are completely unfamiliar, you might want something a bit more comprehensive. If you know basic theory, this is probably a waste of your time.

4 out of 5 stars Good practical theory book.......2007-07-13

It was just what I learned in California's Certificate of Merit program. I needed a review, but it was how I learned it the first time. I recommend it to anyone. And I love that it has the listening CD's. The one caveat is that I play viola, and this version doesn't have my clef. But the theory is still the same. It was brand new and delivery was on time.

5 out of 5 stars Music theory.......2007-05-07

Very well done for a quick review of music theory and would also be excellent for complete novices.

3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2007-02-28

It was not what I expected and it is very dry... I guess all music theory is dry. But this book just seems to kill it for me. I don't know how to explain it I guess. I'd recommend going to a store and flipping through it first to see if you would like it, I only got it because someone had it on a list that had other good books.

      5 out of 5 stars Alfred's Essentials of Music.......2007-09-10

      My son needed this book for school and we received in time for school. Great service!

      4 out of 5 stars Good for self-study when you buy another book.......2007-05-25

      This is a good music theory book. It's easy to follow the lessons, and you don't really need a teacher if you have the other book with ear training CDs as well as answers. But the thing is that this guide book costs around $26, and that's more expensive than ths theory book itself. If you want the whole bunch at cheaper price, buy a book that has practice questions and answers together.

      5 out of 5 stars Good value!.......2007-03-09

      This workbook is very easy to use and a great value considering it is a 3 in 1 offering.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Beginngers and Review.......2007-02-21

      I bought this book as a review before starting theory one at the university level. Some of the info was easy everyday stuff but other portions of the book helped me not only in theory but in dictation as well. I would recommend this book for any musician that has never had formal theory training and would like to start. It is by no means complete but it is definitely a solid start.

                    Book Description

                    Knowledge is a product of human social systems and, therefore, the foundations of the knowledge-based economy are social and cultural. Communication is central to knowledge creation and diffusion, and Public Policy in Knowledge-Based Economies highlights specific social and cultural conditions that can enhance the communication, use and creation of knowledge in a society.

                    The purpose of this book is to illustrate how these social and cultural conditions are identified and analyzed through new conceptual frameworks. Such frameworks are necessary to penetrate the surface features of knowledge-based economies - science and technology - and disclose what drives such economies. The authors employ a trans-disciplinary approach to explore the nature of knowledge systems or environments and examine questions regarding the measurement of knowledge. Lessons are drawn from a variety of perspectives, including the history of information policy, philosophy, economic history, sociology, psychology, information economics, complex systems theory, organizational knowledge theory and political science.

                    This book will provide policymakers, analysts and academics with the fundamental tools needed for the development of policy in this little-understood and emerging area.

                    5 out of 5 stars I really liked it........2002-11-27

                    I think some of the people reviewing this book are being overly mean.

                    What are you looking for out of a book on Gundam Wing?

                    Me?

                    I was looking for:

                    Bios of character w/photos - Yep. They're there. One photo's wrong but who cares? That's the artists fault. ;)

                    Bios of Gundams w/photos - they are here too

                    History & Info on Gundam. Yep, that's here. There's a very cool Timeline with great information about all the Gundam series. Colin Liu wrote a really cool story about "20 Years of Gundam". It's over 30 pages long, and tells you about all the Gundam Storylines.

                    Gundam Wing Episode Guide - Got it.

                    Modeling?? - CT Chin has a nice piece on Gundam Modeling with images of models. This is like 15 pages.

                    And there's a lot of other stuff in this book too. The 3D is kind of cheesy, but the rest of the book is fun.

                    1 out of 5 stars Not for the G Wing newbie! Unless you just want the pics.......2002-08-11

                    I bought it mostly for the pics, even though Sally Po really is listed as being Noin in 1 pic with a real Noin pic on the next page. They have lots of typos, incorrect spelling of names & relationships. I think Dorothy is a distant cousin of some sort to Treize & if Dermail was Treize's brother well Dermail's parents must have been very fertile geriatrics to have a son old enough to be Dorothy's grandfather & also be the parents of a 20 to 23 year old man [I forget if Treize was 20, 21 or 23 in the series, but even the older characters were usually in their late teens]. I found Wufei's bio to be very incorrect & the other pilots data wasn't always correct either. If you want accurate Gundam Wing info buy something else or surf fan sites, the fan sites are usually obsessively correct if at all possible. It's a very good thing that they labelled this as an Unofficial GW book, because if this was an official book they could probably be repremanded for falsehoods or something. If you don't expect to much get it, otherwise save your money & get something else on GW instead, the GW: Tech Manual isn't too bad although that has a few goofs too, doesn't anyone know how to correctly spell Tsubarov's name for heaven's sake?!?!

                    1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ISNT WORTH IT!.......2002-07-14

                    Please dont think for a second that you might want this book! Its information is tottally wrong! Names are [messed] up, family relations dont even make sense,the episode guide was 44% wrong, very biast and inncorrect character reveiws. Dont belive the other reviews on this page saying [stuff] like ''I know every character like someone in my family!'' or the really funny one ''this book was really helpfull.'' If you wanna learn something correct and really cool go to some fan sites .... Then you'll find some helpfull info.

                    1 out of 5 stars HAHA..........2002-03-14

                    Easily put, this book IS NOT WORTH ANYTHING!!! All the information is wrong, and they even mistaken Noir's picture with Sally! Umm....EXCUSE ME?!?! Isn't there enough different between the two to realize they're two different people? Everything about this book is ENTIRELY made up!!! The people who wrote this book either never watched the anime or just decided to pick an anime off the top of their heads and start lying about it...Other than that, DO NOT, AND I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!

                    3 out of 5 stars Hahahaha!.......2002-03-06

                    The only reason I got this book is for the many pictures. Most of the information is incorrect as a 12 year old reader from Millbury, OH said. When it says "Unofficial", they really mean "We made this up". The only nice stuff about this book is the pictures from Universal Century and the modeling section written by C.T. (Core) Chin of www.newtype-asylum.com. Definatly a site to check out. Anyways, I am gonna wrap this up with: If your new to Gundam Wing and looking for some great information, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. But if your looking for some nice pictures from UC then I would pick this book up...

                      Book Description

                      Gaussian processes (GPs) provide a principled, practical, probabilistic approach to learning in kernel machines. GPs have received increased attention in the machine-learning community over the past decade, and this book provides a long-needed systematic and unified treatment of theoretical and practical aspects of GPs in machine learning. The treatment is comprehensive and self-contained, targeted at researchers and students in machine learning and applied statistics.

                      The book deals with the supervised-learning problem for both regression and classification, and includes detailed algorithms. A wide variety of covariance (kernel) functions are presented and their properties discussed. Model selection is discussed both from a Bayesian and a classical perspective. Many connections to other well-known techniques from machine learning and statistics are discussed, including support-vector machines, neural networks, splines, regularization networks, relevance vector machines and others. Theoretical issues including learning curves and the PAC-Bayesian framework are treated, and several approximation methods for learning with large datasets are discussed. The book contains illustrative examples and exercises, and code and datasets are available on the Web. Appendixes provide mathematical background and a discussion of Gaussian Markov processes.

                      Book Description

                      Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is a signal-processing method to extract independent sources given only observed data that are mixtures of the unknown sources. Recently, blind source separation by ICA has received considerable attention because of its potential signal-processing applications such as speech enhancement systems, telecommunications, medical signal-processing and several data mining issues.
                      This book presents theories and applications of ICA and includes invaluable examples of several real-world applications. Based on theories in probabilistic models, information theory and artificial neural networks, several unsupervised learning algorithms are presented that can perform ICA. The seemingly different theories such as infomax, maximum likelihood estimation, negentropy maximization, nonlinear PCA, Bussgang algorithm and cumulant-based methods are reviewed and put in an information theoretic framework to unify several lines of ICA research. An algorithm is presented that is able to blindly separate mixed signals with sub- and super-Gaussian source distributions. The learning algorithms can be extended to filter systems, which allows the separation of voices recorded in a real environment (cocktail party problem).
                      The ICA algorithm has been successfully applied to many biomedical signal-processing problems such as the analysis of electroencephalographic data and functional magnetic resonance imaging data. ICA applied to images results in independent image components that can be used as features in pattern classification problems such as visual lip-reading and face recognition systems. The ICA algorithm can furthermore be embedded in an expectation maximization framework for unsupervised classification.
                      Independent Component Analysis: Theory and Applications is the first book to successfully address this fairly new and generally applicable method of blind source separation. It is essential reading for researchers and practitioners with an interest in ICA.

                      4 out of 5 stars What a price ?!.......2002-04-27

                      The first part of the book is the best part, it deals with ICA in the information theoretic framework and shows how the (ML) and (infomax) are closely related. However, it is not for beginners since the background material is abbreviated as well as the mathematical exposition of this book assumes the preknowledge in ICA theory.The overall impression one gets is that the book is too short, knowing that the book is more or less a collection of the author's papers, this should not be surprising at all.

                      I rate it 4/5 because of its expensive price.

                      2 out of 5 stars Great Expectations !!.......2001-07-19

                      This book is not what you expect at all because :

                      (1) It is merely a collection of papers for the same author lacking proper organization;

                      (2) Blank pages are deliberately left between chapters, also figures are placed on separate pages this can tell you a lot regarding the quality you expect;

                      (3) The book is expensive ,I think the author should make it the half or less ;

                      (4) A researcher in this field hardly sees the book as a reference;

                      (5) Other topics are ignored ex:Tensoral methods;ICA is not only about Infomax;

                      (6) The first pages compose the climax of the book ,the rest is just loose and even abscent concepts;

                      (7) Finally,I think that the book was published too early ,it seems a lot of maturity could have been witnessed if the author waited instead.

                      Anyone new will be presented to the name of the subject but not the subject itself .The book by Hyvarinen should be available ... ,go for it.I believe life will be a lot easier .The latter is divided into four parts which clearly puts the reader in the right place to start and are : (I) Mathematical Preliminaries (II) Basic Independent Component Analysis (III) Extensions and related Methods (IV) Applications of ICA ,also after reading the sample chapter and contents I think you will not be disappointed . ....

                      2 out of 5 stars An average book.......2001-07-07

                      If the newcomer is expecting a textbook which gives a thorough and rigorous introduction to the subject, he will not find it here. Essentially, Independent Component Analysis by T. Lee is a compendium of Lee's work on the subject, being, for the most part, a regurgitation of his papers. This in itself is no cause for distress; however, I feel that perhaps some more detail and work could have gone into other researchers' avenues to the problem. For instance, cumulant based methods hardly make it into the book. The derivation of the most important formulas for multiple decorrelation algorithms are omitted. The Fixed-Point Method of Hyvarinen is omitted. A paragraph is given to algorithms which work entirely in the frequency domain. Short shrift is given to JADE.

                      The applications side is dominated nearly entirely by the biomedical applications to which Lee is associated with, with a small foray into the world of feature extraction.

                      The introduction and conclusions are well written, though more detail could have helped. There are a few errata throughout though this is normal for a first book. All in all a book with a rather narrow focus.

                      3 out of 5 stars Very good for a first book in the field.......2000-10-13

                      Presents clearly the problems and the method. The introductory part was helpful in understanding the ICA theoretical model although more detail on kurtosis description would have been beneficial. I liked the infomax algorithm and the way it was presented. On the down side: some minor erroneus explanations found. I have the feeling that ICA is more than just infomax approach and that the title "Independent Component Analysis - an Infomax Approach" would have been more appropiate. On the application section, very good presentation of the signal separation but very succint explanation on natural images for example. Being the first book I see in the field, I think, a thorough presentation would have been helpful.
