Book Description

African American Music: An Introduction is a collection of thirty essays by leading scholars which survey major African American musical genres, both sacred and secular, from slavery to the present. It is the most comprehensive study of African American music currently available, with sixteen essays on major genres of African American music, as well as lengthy sections on the music industry, gender, and music as resistance. The work brings together, in a single volume, treatments of African American music that have existed largely independent of each other. The research is based in large part on ethnographic fieldwork, which privileges the voices of the music-makers themselves, while interpreting their narratives through a richly textured mosaic of history and culture. The book is replete with references to seminal recordings and recording artists, musical transcriptions, photographs, and illustrations that bring the music to life as expressions of human beings. At the same time, it includes the kind of musical specificity that brings clarity to the structural, melodic, and rhythmic characteristics that both distinguish and unify the music of African Americans.

    Book Description

Theomusicology is musicology as a theologically informed discipline. Borrowing thought and method from anthropology, sociology, psychology, and philosophy, it has as its subject the myriad cultural worlds of ethical, religious, and mythological belief. Theomusicological research into cultural/intercultural reflections on the ethical, the religious, and the mythological involves the study of music in the domain or communities of the sacred, the secular, and the profane. By examining the depths of sacrality, secularity, and profanity in the music of civilization's many cultures, the theomusicologist can increasingly discern how particular peoples perceive the universal mysteries that circumscribe their mortal existence, and how the ethics, theologies, and mythologies to which they subscribe shape their worlds. To accomplish his goal, Spencer divides his book into two parts. Part One, "The Domain of Theomusicology," functions as a methodological exposition to Part Two. It defines the meaning of and suggested method for theomusicology and delineates the theomusicologist's best and broadest possible perspective on the world. Part Two, "The Discourses of Theomusicology," illustrates how theomusicology can, and at its best does, involve dialogue with different disciplines as well as a gamut of historical epochs and movements. Each chapter is divided into sections based on the particular text theomusicology has read and interacted with. Spencer's work establishes theomusicology as a scholarly discipline and a valid research approach to studying world religious, mythological, and ethical beliefs via music. It is essential reading for historical musicologists, ethnomusicologists, and scholars of sacred music.

    4 out of 5 stars Great work........2000-11-10

I am currently a student of Earl Stewart's at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and we are using his book in his class. The book is full of great information about the history of African-American music. I can only make one negative remark and that is that the book at times required the reader to have some knowledge and background in reading music. If one can look past this problem, they will find that is book is very interesting and great for anyone interested in learning more about the African-American musical history and style.

                  Book Description

Ruthless murderer Lizzie Borden, deadly dancer Mata Hari, and all-American outlaw Bonnie Parker are women not just bad or evil, but downright wicked. In this fascinating look at these larger-than-life legends, along with a posse of eight others, The Devil Inside Her explores the allure of these wicked women and how their exploits have taken on a life of their own. It also looks at how they continue to thrive as pop culture icons.

The murderous deeds of these women — both real and imagined — have become legendary, leaving us both enthralled and terrified. From bandits to killer queens, from spies to gunslingers, the women profiled here come from all walks of life and include bandit queen Phoolan Devi, Countess Dracula Erzsebet Bathory, voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, pirate of the Caribbean Anne Bonney, the Dragon Lady of China Cixi, wild west rebel Belle Starr, the black widow Lucrezia Borga, and the bloody despot Mary Tudor. Many died violent deaths; some just slipped out of history's grasp. Few were understood in their time or even after their deaths, but all are unforgettable. The Devil Inside Her captures the mystique of these misunderstood, transgressive and world's most wicked women.

                  3 out of 5 stars So-so........1999-02-22

It has a complete episode guide, but some info is wrong or missing. It's an okay book, but there's not enough backround info, and too many interviews. The color photos are nice, as are the bios of Al and Sam.

4 out of 5 stars Excerlant value for money worth buying........1998-07-19

As i am a serious Quantum Leap fan, it was nice to see some good photography and also an interverview with Dean Stockwell, he is very hard to get an interview with. I feel that there could have been a bit more of an indeapth view of the show it's self. I think if you want a good buy and also a good read then buy this book, it is one that time after time you will pick up and read again and again. Also well done to the auther and publisher, i would like to see more on the show and novels aswell.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but flawed.......1998-06-28

Chunovic did a great job collecting many interesting pictures for the book, but there are some errors, and the last season isn't included. Overall, it was worth the money.

                  4 out of 5 stars A little out-of-date.......1997-02-14

Thre usual Boxtree "behind-the-scenes" fare here. Lots of pictures, interviews etc, but it doesn't go up to the end of the show's 5 years, and so feels a little weird when you read it. But the pictures of the Ziggy set and some of the props we hardly see on the show are quite nice. Worth a look.

2 out of 5 stars Quantum LAPSE is a bit closer.......1996-08-09

This book is filled with errors. The interviews and a day on the set sections are interesting, but I can't say as much for the rest of it. If you are a serious fan of the telvision series, you might want to consider this book. Anyone else should skip it. If you want a good Quantum Leap reference, read "Quantum Leap: A to Z"

3 out of 5 stars Good book in some ways but also very odd.......2007-08-10

This book is quite odd in that if flicks between what sounds like a dotcom consulting company pre-2000 and then to a univeristy academic and then back again quite regularly. I'm sure the academic content of the theory is flawless but it's like the author is pretending to work in in industry when in fact he's never seen outside a university. This is perhaps unfair as there's a limited amount of the ESP/CEP literature out there but don't be fooled into believing this book will be of practical use to you if you're a developer in industry being pressured into one ESP/CEP system or another, though it should cerainly be food for thought if you'd like to consider more deeply past some of the commerical implementations of ESP/CEP. If you're a software architect with no deliverables this is probably right up your street.

1 out of 5 stars Surprisingly boring to read.......2005-07-13

I tried to read this book. I have it on my book shelf and I can see it right now, but I really couldn't get past the introduction. For a supposedly technical book, the first chapter reads like a 1995 introduction to the 'information superhighway' and about how wonderful it will be. This sentence on page 9:
"Another example is automated trading Web sites, or "eMarketplaces" as they are called."

Then followed by the word "global eCommerce Web". It just reads like a bad commercial from IBM or BEA telling you how to 'accelerate your eCommerce to web speed'.

In theory the book should be good, but this kind of treatment really offends my technical sensibilities.

4 out of 5 stars Finally an IT book with Meat!.......2002-12-11

If you are like me and you are frustrated after picking up an IT book and only getting superficial platitudes rather than keen insights, then you may be pleasantly surprised by this book because it really reveals, as the title states, the "Power of Events." The book starts off establishing the author's grounding in Enterprise Architectures (and their shortcomings), and then proceeds to build an intuitive foundation to seduce the reader into the world of events that they may not have realized was so much a part of distributed systems. While the formal notation used in the book may appear daunting, it is easily mastered and the subtle rules and mechanism are exposed through many thoughtful examples. I will say the second half of the book is a slower read than the 1st part, but the book should leave you with some confidence that there really are some breakthroughs in software technology that will have a positive impact on distributed IT System quality and the complex event processing shows that potential.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Easy to Read.......2002-06-10

As IT infrastructure weaves itself into every aspect of a business, managing these systems becomes an imperative. The Lines of Business demand complete and the real time visibility into the IT infrastructure. Most systems developed do not allow the IT departments to manage at these levels. Dr Luckhams book propose a framework for managing this complexity. He puts forth, in a simple and readable manner how do manage systems by observing the "Cloud of Events" and how to build systems that are easier to manage.

It is the first book that I have come across that deals with the topic of IT management at a level that is not too abstract or complete focused on existing tools, instead Dr Luckham takes the reader much closer to a solution to the problem by getting them to think about the problem in the right way. He puts years of Stanford research into a readable form for the ordinary mortal. Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking, Heavyweight, Must-Have.......2002-05-21

It is seldom that one comes across a software engineering book that is free of hype and doesn't cut corners when it comes to providing details. This book is a must-have for every software professional. You don't have to be working on a cutting edge project to benefit from this book. What this book teaches is a new way of critically thinking about complex software design and architecture. The book is masterfully written and as its Preface states, is the result of over a decade of hard-core research into event pattern matching conducted at Stanford University. This is a book that one can put to use right away, using tools and systems that are available today.
