Book Description

Introduced in 1954 as one of Gretsch's "Guitars of the Future," the White Falcon was an overwhelmingly impressive instrument. The influence of this spectacular new guitar spread to other models and guitar manufacturers. It was the dawn of a half-century of awe-inspiring guitars which are now favored by widely popular artists including Pete Townshend, Tom Petty, Alanis Morisette, Sheryl Crow, John Frusciante, Bo Diddley, and more. This book compiles the best of Gretsch's inventions over the past 50 years and tells the stories of their creation and the men who created them. Includes 100 photos! (8-1/2 inch. x 11 inch., 144 pages)

3 out of 5 stars A nice try.......2007-02-03

The problem with Tony Bacon's book is right there in the title: "50 years of Gretsch Electrics" There really isn't enough room in this book to visually present a large array of the models produced by the Gretsch company, and give a history of the many changes of the Gretsch company. In fact, Bacon omits any discusion or photos of any Gretsch Bass models. While Bacon does do a decent job of documenting the many changes that the Gretsch company has undergone, it's at the expense of having room for more visual examples of many Gretsch guitars. The book is somewhat confusing in that the photographs on many pages do not correspond with the subject of the text. What dissapointed me the most was the limited selection of photographs. Instead of presenting more photos of guitars, Bacon offers a reference section that merely shows black and white body outlines of different models that corrospond with brief discrpitions of the models that used those bodies. Sound confusing? It is.
In the end, there just isn't enough room to both discuss the history of the Gretsch Company as well as offer an extensive visual presentation of the many Gretsch guitars.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Gretsch fans.......2006-06-26

Super book. An easy to read, informative work for anyone wanting to know more about Gretsch guitars and the history of the Gretsch company. Good mix of text and pix with a very helpful identification section towards the end of the book. Especially helpful in trying to identify the many Gretsch models.

Book Description

A fascinating look at how men and women approach competition—both on and off the court. Noted author and lecturer Kathleen J. DeBoer first examines many of the non-physical differences between the sexes (their values and fears, conversation, behavior, psychological adjustment, etc.), then DeBoer helps define these and other variables as they relate to gender differences in both competitive play and competitive work environments. Finally, DeBoer offers detailed suggestions on how men and women can communicate, understand, and ultimately overcome their differences.

A good read for coaches but...
There are so few good life lessons out there for young female athletes trying to establish themselves in the world that when one comes along it is best that the gals can access it.
This book's title portends portentously and so it is likely that most of those who will read it will be coaches, educators and maybe a few parents.
That is the big problem with this book's title.
Kathy's lessons are more valuable than that!
This book should be read by female athletes! ...those female athletes who are trying to establish themselves as athletes and people in our world.
& then if the role models, educators and care givers want to talk it over with their young ladies, so be it.

5 out of 5 stars Gender & Competition: How Men and Women Work and Play Differently.......2005-08-18

For men coaching women (which is happening frequently these days), this is a must read. After watching a disastrous high school male coaching flop that led to humiliation for most of the girls on the team last year, (and having been a former high school standout athlete coached by a woman), the author hits every legitimate point in the difference of the sexes with regard to competitive sports. I really appreciate her honesty in her earlier years thinking that women could be men, and realizing as she matured that women can be as competitive as men, but they are definitely wired differently in their approaches to it. And it's not just about sports. Her observations about work have also helped me deal with my husband and my boss on a whole new level. Vive la difference!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any good manager.......2005-04-21

Great book -- very engaging, full of great anecdotes. Kathy deBoer has thought long and hard and come to very interesting conclusions about the effects of certain gender-related differences in the workplace and on the sports field.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-04-01

Excellent book... a must read for any manager in business or any coach that coaches boys and girls sports teams.

I will use this as a reference for a long time...

                      Book Description

Does television play a positive or negative role in the diffusion of women's culture? What relationship exists between television and women's culture? In this impressive volume, an international team of contributors critically examines the profound role television plays in defining women's culture. Topics addressed include women as audiences, rock videos, feminist criticism of television, and consumerism, to name but a few. As a substantial contribution to both mass communication and women's studies, Television and Women's Culture will be welcomed by faculty, students, and researchers in the fields of popular culture, women's studies, communication studies, and sociology. "Television and Women's Culture represents a welcome addition to the rapidly growing body of literature on television theory as well as to the development of feminist television-based criticism. . . . This research is an unquestionably important intervention in the area of feminist television-based theory for the primary reason that it seriously considers the ways in which popular television genres are intimately imbricated with the everyday lives of a great number of women. . . . I would recommend Television and Women's Culture . . . it represents a significant contribution to the study of popular culture, mass communication, and women's studies. . . . This collection provides an important forum for debate around the issues of audiences, women's culture, and television theory, and, as such, deserves close and critical reading." --Canadian Journal of Communication "The individual authors represent a fine range of international perspectives and address topics that range from traditionally women-identified genres of television, such as soap operas and game shows, to a surprisingly fresh inquiry into women's reception of a male-identified television spectacle, Australian-rules football. . . . All 12 essays fulfill the promise of the cultural studies mission to isolate and elevate subcultural resistance strategies. . . . The book includes an excellent, extensive bibliography of current research in cultural studies and women audiences. . . . Television and Women's Culture is a significant collection. It challenges and expands research agendas in media studies and foregrounds voices and subcultural communities formerly silenced both by dominant culture and in our own research. As a supplemental text in media courses or a reference source for researchers, it could function to stimulate fresh questions about the multiple dimensions of the relationship between television and its viewers, especially the gendered dimensions of our media habits." --Quarterly Journal of Speech "There are sophisticated, persuasive chapters which apply contemporary theorizing to popular culture. . . .The essays hang together as convincing demonstration of how women, while still functioning within the dominant economic and social order, can and sometimes do appropriate television texts for their own affective and political purposes." --Journalism Quarterly "Though [the contributors] recognize that television frequently distorts and oppresses women's experience, the authors eschew a simplistic manipulative view of the media. Instead they show how and why such different genres as game shows, police fiction and soap opera offer women opportunities for negotiation of their own meanings and their own aesthetic appreciation." --Gender & Mass Media "[One] of four important titles . . . advancing insights on contemporary issues. . . . Probing and critical." --The Bookwatch "A refreshing collection of theoretical and critical works examining the impact of women and women's culture on television. . . . An excellent guide to promote critical thinking and new approaches to the study of television and women's culture. . . . A good classroom resource for the study of women and media . . . and . . . a good addition to the body of research needed for the inclusion of multicultural education in the curriculum." --Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media "Well-written and well-conceptualized. . . . Those interested in the feminist perspective in media studies will find this volume valuable. The essays are highly readable. The ideas presented are challenging and offer refreshing insights." --Et Cetera: Journal of General Semantics "An engaging, informative collection of essays . . . fresh, original. . . . The book provides food for thought on how to produce as well as consume television content without perpetuating gender inequities." --Women and Language "Useful to undergraduate and graduate students of women's studies, mass communications, and cultural studies. The introduction provides a succinct explanation of the theoretical groundings of this growing body of research. Clear definitions of terminology are found throughout the volume, making this book accessible to those unschooled in feminist theory. . . . Provides much-needed examples of feminist television content analysis." --Choice "Brown incisively frames these essays with a lucid and straightforward introduction and conclusion. . . . Provocative reading for anyone interested in what is going on in cultural studies . . . the essays work together quite coherently." --Contemporary Sociology

                          Book Description

The years following World War I in Germany saw the simultaneous emergence of radio as a public medium entering the private sphere of the home and the large-scale emergence of women entering the public sphere of politics and production. In Feminine Frequencies, Kate Lacey examines the mutual implications of these important developments and provides a distinctive analysis of radio in the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich which not only restores women to the history of radio, but identifies and investigates the impact of gender politics on the development of German broadcasting.
At the heart of the book is an exploration of radio programming for women from the mid-1920s to the end of World War II. Largely through the Frauenfunk, radio transformed women's domestic life, mediated women's experience of modernity and war, and worked to integrate women into the modern consumer culture, the national economy, and eventually the "national community" of the Volksgemeinschaft. At the same time, decisions about how that programming was to operate influenced the way radio was conceived as a broadcast rather than an interactive technology.
Ultimately, the cultural practice and propaganda of the Third Reich were anticipated in and enabled by the legacy of broadcasting in the Weimar Republic. Feminine Frequencies confronts the consequences of a missed opportunity to harness the democratic potential of a new medium of communication.
Based on original archival research, and interdisciplinary in approach, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars in German studies, women's studies, and media studies.
Kate Lacey is Lecturer in Media Studies, School of European Studies, University of Sussex.

                            Book Description

This timely collection brings feminist critique to bear on contemporary postfeminist mass media culture, analyzing phenomena ranging from action films featuring violent heroines to the “girling” of aging women in productions such as the movie Something’s Gotta Give and the British television series 10 Years Younger. Broadly defined, “postfeminism” encompasses a set of assumptions that feminism has accomplished its goals and is now a thing of the past. It presumes that women are unsatisfied with their (taken for granted) legal and social equality and can find fulfillment only through practices of transformation and empowerment. Postfeminism is defined by class, age, and racial exclusions; it is youth-obsessed and white and middle-class by default. Anchored in consumption as a strategy and leisure as a site for the production of the self, postfeminist mass media assumes that the pleasures and lifestyles with which it is associated are somehow universally shared and, perhaps more significantly, universally accessible.

Essays by feminist film, media, and literature scholars based in the United States and United Kingdom provide an array of perspectives on the social and political implications of postfeminism. Examining magazines, mainstream and independent cinema, popular music, and broadcast genres from primetime drama to reality television, contributors consider how postfeminism informs self-fashioning through makeovers and cosmetic surgery, the “metrosexual” male, the “black chick flick,” and more. Interrogating Postfeminism demonstrates not only the viability of, but also the necessity for, a powerful feminist critique of contemporary popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars Clear, well illustrated useful manual.......2006-12-30

I am definitely part of the target audience for JMP - a scientist who uses statistics frequently in my everyday work but not a statistician who lives in the numbers. I need powerful tools that are quick and easy to use and provide reliable answers to statistical questions. But, as powerful as JMP is, it is far from intuitive. The system for data input is a leftover from the thinking of card punch days. The software manual is abysmal and the menus are a complete confusion, especially if you use (and think) Excel.

This book comes to the rescue. The first author of this book, John Sall is a co-founder of SAS Institute and the creator of JMP - he knows the program. It was his idea to provide such a program for scientists who did not need SAS's complete arsenal of statistical tools. Most laudable.

The book starts by explaining the system behind the analysis tools in JMP. It then explains the data entry system. I had already figured this out on my own before I got the book but it took an entire afternoon. The book would have reduced the process to 30 minutes - that alone is worth the price. One section is even called "The Personality of JMP." The program definitely has a personality and this book explains even that quickly and well.

From here the book launches into the various tools in JMP, from categorical models, to regression analysis to linear fitting. There are sections on experimental design and statistical quality control. While there is a worthy section called "What are Statistics" and there is considerable discussion of the limits of statistical knowledge, I would not recommend that you buy this book as a statistics text. JMP and this book assume that you are already well grounded in statistics.

The style is technical but light and accessible to advanced undergraduates. The illustrations of the menus, options and graphs within JMP are faithful to the program. The explanations are clear and illuminating. My edition came with a disk full of data examples that follow the text. If you find yourself confronted with JMP and have not got a clue how to start - order this book and have it shipped express.

1 out of 5 stars Buy with caution.......2006-12-01

I bought this book in order to learn how to use the software. As a health care provider & scientist, i have some statistical background. I found the book less than helpful. The JMP software itself is already less than intuitive. The book now sits on a shelf and would qualify as - used - almost new - hardly used - category.

                              5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2002-05-17

If you use JMP and need something to fill in the statistical details omitted in the user manuals, then this is the book for you.

I have used JMP for a while, and with a basic knowledge of statistics it is a useful tool. It got to the stage where I knew that JMP was capable of doing alot more analysis than my limited knowledge of statistics would let me understand. I could get the software to carry out all manner of analyses, I just didn't always understand what the output was telling me. The book "JMP Start Statistics" starts right at the beginning and takes you all the way through to things such as multiple regression, design of experiments and statistical quality control, all the while explaining the statistics in a clear and concise manner. This book will definitely help you get more out of JMP than just the manuals, which tend to assume you already have a statistics background, would.
