This is a very good book for players who like Ozzy's music and the styles of his guitarist. Note that this book does not show you complete songs but the highlights. The one of the best feature is the CD, they put the guitar on the right side of your stereo and the backup band on the left so you can turn down the guitar and play with the CD, very cool. Also the instruction is great and easy to follow and if you are not a strong reader of tablature (TAB) it has some helpfull definitions in the back. It will be tough for a first time guitar player to buy this and try and keep up, but I wouldn't underestimate the drive of a future guitar hero. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Oz & the family.......2005-12-06

20+ years ago I learned the solo to Bark at the Moon. Recently my 12-going-on-13 year old son took an interest in vintage Ozzy. I couldn't be happier! I bought this book for him, but when it arrived I found myself obsessed with each page and audio track. It brought back memories of youth, inspiration, and musical bliss! I learned a few songs that have been long forgotten. I learned a few songs that I've never played before. And, I gained the priceless moments of teaching them to my son. Guitar is great! The Oz is great. His choice of guitarists is eternally great.

Book Description

The 'death of literature' and the rise of post-structuralist theory has breached the traditional opposition between the literary canon and popular culture, both in principle and in academic practice. When first published in 1992, The Critical and Cultural Theory Reader served the growing need for a collection of essays and extracts for the study of both high and popular culture together. Now, the second and expanded edition of this highly successful reader reflects the growing diversity of the field and includes thirteen new essays. Divided into six thematic sections - semiology, ideology, subjectivity, difference, gender and race, and postmodernism - the reader features an editors' introduction to the volume, introductions to each of the thematic sections, as well as invaluable summaries of each of the extracts.

The second edition includes excerpts from essential works of cultural theorists Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard, Homi K. Bhabha, Judith Butler, Hélène Cixous, Simone de Beauvoir, Ferdinand de Saussure, Jacques Derrida, Umberto Eco, Frederick Engels, Franz Fanon, Michel Foucault, Sigmund Freud, Julia Kristeva, Jacques Lacan, Jean-François Lyotard, Colin MacCabe, Pierre Macherey, Karl Marx, Kobena Mercer, Laura Mulvey, Rajeswari Sunder Rajan, Edward Said, and Slavoj Žižek. It will prove indispensable to students of critical and cultural theory, as well as communications and popular culture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to contemporary theory.......1999-07-21

Despite the rather tongue-in-cheek review by the student from Boston, this is a well-edited and thoughtful collection. It provides context for selections from Marx, Saussure, Barthes, Foucault, Freud and others. As a professor who has taught widely about critical theory, I highly recommend this intelligent book.

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide to academic tomfoolery........1999-04-11

When this book popped up on my list of textbooks for a seminar class I was taking, I gave it nary a thought. I simply purchased the book, like the diligent student that I am, and went on my merry way. As the course picked up, we spent more and more time discussing the contents of this little collection of thoughts. Deconstructing to our hearts content, we flew through the pages. Our fabulously postmodern, poststructuralist ideas overflowed from the container that was our classroom. Swimming in the discursive bliss that is this book, we lapped up the sweet elixir of its signifiers. Yet, always lurking in the back of our minds were threats of delegitimation. Where were we to go? What were we to do--plagued in this postmodern, capitalist utopia we like to call the United States of America, wallowing in one of its academic institutions no less? Clutching our readers we walk the streets, the strong winds of the anti-revolution revolution beating against our frail student bodies. Weaving our way through the carceral network of our lives, accumulating a gaunt identity of pastiche we walk smack into the inevitable wall--the wall that is our own knowledge limited; the wall that is truth or its abscene. And so, we turn back, open our reader, and meditate.

    Book Description

An elegant introduction to Bataille's major concepts and concerns, Bataille: A Critical Reader underlines the powerful impact his work has had, in different ways, on an entire generation of thinkers. It reveals a fascinating genealogy, marking Bataille's pivotal position for theorists whose own work has enabled the transformation of literary and cultural studies in the Anglo-American academy in the last twenty years. The Critical Reader thus redresses what has been a gaping oversight in the reception of French thought since the 1960s. Keying their selections to The Bataille Reader, the editors provide students and general readers of both volumes with an essential and consistently clear source of reference and elucidation. Chapters included are by: Jean Baudrillard, Maurice Blanchot, Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Jean-Joseph Goux, Denis Hollier, Jurgen Habermas, Philippe Sollers, with an extensive introduction by the editors.

Sean Connery's tuxedo, Ursula Andress' bikini, Oddjob's bowler hat, and Q's gadgets are just a few defining features of the 007 world examined in The James Bond Phenomenon. Drawn from the fields of literary, film, music, and cultural studies, the essays in this collection range from revitalized readings of Ian Fleming's original spy novels to the analysis of Pussy Galore's lesbianism, Miss Moneypenny's filmic feminism, and Pierce Brosnan's techno-fetishism. Together, the essays not only consider the James Bond novels and films in relation to their historical, political, and social contexts from the cold-war period forward, but also examine the classic Bond canon from an array of theoretical perspectives.

2 out of 5 stars Various Theses on Various Themes.......2000-06-05

This book consists of theses, written by researchers in various fields, on various themes such as hyperreality, fashion, capitalism, postmodernism, and feminism. Therefore, I think that there are some theses in which Baudrillardfs thoughts are not understood at all. The constitution of this book is not so good because each researcher mention freely to various notions without big theme that combines each thesis. It is disappointing that discussions on Baudrillard do not develop between each thesis. If each thesis were complementary to each other, this book would be more interesting and more controversial.

2 out of 5 stars Fear & Loathing (and a little affection) in Academia.......2000-04-22

Editor Kellner is a big Baudrillard 'expert' and an eminently clever chap who, therefore, needs to take everything terribly seriously, particularly when he's putting his name to "truly balanced assessment of Baudrillard's contributions to contemporary thought". In his introduction, we are warned that "Baudrillard loves to shock and outrage. Some of his antics are highly amusing and provide a level entertainment rarely found in social theory and criticism. Some of his provocations are silly and offensive ..." Antics? Performing dog Baudrillard is not, though it's convenient for academia to treat him as if he were, and as much of this critical collection does: po-facedly analysing his 'tricks', dully pointing out the 'inconsistencies'. "Silly and offensive ..." Oh right - and the world isn't? Aah, who cares.

Where Kellner is right, though, is that Baudrillard's original writings are often very funny and horribly prescient and - if you just go with the flow of the bombast and generalization and accept it as Baudrillard's peculiar manifestation of the 'ecstasy of communication' - eye-opening. So pass on this desperately grave nonsense and enjoy the originals that spawn it.

The work of Jacques Derrida has transformed our understanding of a range of disciplines in the humanities through its questioning of some of the basic tenets of western metaphysics. This volume is a trans-disciplinary collection dedicated to his work. The assembled contributions--on law, literature, ethics, gender, politics and psychoanalysis--constitute an investigation of the role of Derrida's work in the humanities, present and future. The volume is distinguished by work on some of his most recent writings, and contains Derrida's own address on "the future of the humanities".

The volume presents the most sustained examples yet of what deconstruction is in its current phase - as well as what its possible future may be.

Essays by noted theorists such as Drucilla Cornell, Nancy Fraser, Peter Goodrich, and Gayatri Spivak provide a bridge between critical cultural studies in the humanities and the Critical Legal Studies movement demonstrating the transdisciplinary nature of both fields.

This book is an inaugural integration of Contemporary Cultural Studies and Critical Legal Studies that sets the question of "justice" at the fore of postmodern critical theory. Opening with introductory-level discussions of key theoretical models in postmodern thought, the collection culminates in a series of radical critiques of existing modes of cultural and legal theory. Contributors to this volume include David S. Caudill, Marie Ashe, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Nancy Fraser, Costas Douzinas and Ronnie Warrington, Drucilla Cornell, Eugene D. Genovese, Peter Goodrich, Teresa L. Ebert, and Jerry D. Leonard.

                Book Description

Before 1973, the Loud family of Santa Barbara, California, lived in the privacy of their own home. With the airing of the documentary An American Family, that "privacy" extended to every American home that had a television in it-and there was no going back to the happy land of Beaver, Donna Reed, and Father Knows Best. This book is the first to offer a close, sustained look at An American Family-the documentary that blurred conventions, stirred passions among viewers and reviewers, revised impressions of family life and definitions of private and public, and began the breakdown of distinctions between reality and spectacle that culminated in cultural phenomena from The Oprah Winfrey Show to Survivor.

While placing Craig Gilbert's innovative series in the context of 1970s nonfiction film and television, Jeffrey Ruoff tells the story behind An American Family from conception to broadcast, from reception to long-term impact. He reintroduces us to the Louds as intimate details of their daily lives, from one child's dance recital to another's gay lifestyle to the parents' divorce proceedings, unfold first before the camera and then before American viewers, challenging audiences to think seriously about family, marital relations, sexuality, affluence, and the American dream. In the documentary's immediate impact-on both producers and viewers of media-Ruoff uncovers the roots of new nonfiction forms including confessional talk shows like Oprah, first-person documentary films like Ross McElwee's acclaimed Sherman's March, and reality TV programs such as The Real World, Survivor, and Big Brother.

A comprehensive production and reception study, Ruoff's work restores An American Family to its rightful, pioneering place in the history of American television.

Jeffrey Ruoff is a film historian, documentary filmmaker, and assistant professor of film and television studies at Dartmouth College. He is co-author (with Kenneth Ruoff) of The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1998). Visible Evidence Series, volume 11

5 out of 5 stars The comprehensive guide to this groundbreaking series.......2002-04-20

Now that "reality" television is a dominant format for mainstream television (from the fourth--and counting-- installment of "Survivor" to "The Bachelor" and on and on), it makes sense to go back to the original.

"An American Family" was a surprise success when it was first broadcast in 1973: a 12-part series on PBS with very few voice-overs and what now seem like long shots of an affluent California family (two divorcing parents and five kids) doing things like playing guitar and discussing mundane topics and cleaning out their backyard pool (there were more engaging moments than that, but they were not the majority of shots).

What accounted for this series' success? How did it get made? How was it edited, and what was kept in and left out? Why is it still so compelling despite the passage of time and the declining attention spans of Americans in the past 30 years? Could it get made today?

This ultimate book about "An American Family" answers many of these questions and more: probing the origins of the series, and analyzing the final product and the widespread reaction to it in well-researched and precise detail.

The filmmakers were very lucky (in the sense of being able to create compelling TV) to have chanced upon the Loud family, in which the parents were about to get divorced and in which the eldest son Lance (who died in 2002, sadly) provided such a usable storyline (hanging out with Warhol's crowd in New York, etc). The book debunks the widely-held belief that Lance "came out" during the series. He never explicitly says he's gay on the show. However, of course he was, and it was much of America's first exposure to an openly gay man on TV, week after week.

If you've never seen this series but are still intrigued by it, also buy the book! Reading it will give you a great sense of the program, and will allow you to visualize it. (The still illustrations also help, as do accompanying material like press-release photos and ads from the time).

I only wish the series itself was for sale somewhere! Unfortunately, WNET in New York no longer seems to own the rights.
