THE NASHVILLE NUMBER SYSTEM
In the late 50's, Neil Matthews devised a musical number system for the Jordanaires to use in the studio. Charlie McCoy and fellow studio musicians began adapting Matthews' number system into chord charts. The Nashville Number System has evolved into a complete method of writing chord charts and melodies---combining Nashville shorthand with formal notation standards.
The Nashville Number System is 130 pages with a step by step method of how to write a Nashville number chart for any song. Included with each NNS book in Edition 7 is the cd, "String Of Pearls". This is a 10 song cd of  instrumentals, including, Amazing Grace. I walk you through the details of each song and explain the Number System tools used to write the charts. Now, while listening to the cd, you can see and hear how Nashville number charts work.
THE NASHVILLE NUMBER SYSTEM includes a collection of handwritten number charts for the songs on the cd, String Of Pearls. Each song is charted by hand from the cd by:
  • Charlie McCoy (Hee-Haw)   • David Briggs (Session Keyboardist/Arranger) • Eddie Bayers (Session drummer)   • Jimmy Capps (Studio guitarist, Grand Ole Opry Staff Band) • Brent Rowan (Studio guitarist/Producer) • Lura Foster (Charts for TV shows: Nashville Now, Music City Tonight, Primetime Country) • John Hobbs (Session Keyboardist) • Mike Chapman (Session Bassist) • Biff Watson (Session Guitarist) • Chris Farren (Producer/Guitarist) • Tony Harrell (Session Keyboardist/Studio Owner)
Each of these musicians wrote 5 number charts in his or her style from the String Of Pearls cd.
For example, the song, String Of Pearls, has charts written by: Charlie McCoy, Brent Rowan, John Hobbs, Jimmy Capps and Biff Watson.
The song, Waylon, has charts written by Tony Harrell, Lura Foster, Chris Farren, Biff Watson and Eddie Bayers.
The idea is that you’ll be able to compare, side by side, some of the different styles of notation and symbols you can use to chart the same piece of music. So, as you listen to a song on the cd, you can flip between different charts written of the same song.
These different charts represent the kinds of numbering techniques that you are liable to run into in almost all of the major recording and television studios, clubs, showcases, rehearsal halls, and other situations where music is performed in Nashville.

5 out of 5 stars It's easier than it looks!.......2007-09-23

After reading the book I was a little hesitant about using the number system. The next time I went to the studio to record a new demo of my song I sat with some of Nashville's "A" list players and watched as they quickly and easily charted my song and from reading the book, I was understanding what they were doing. Even they tweeked their first chart of the song
Next time I'll try it myself and let them tweek it if necessary!
Don't be afraid but do get this book and CD to help you understand The Nashville Number System!

The book was accurately described and will prove very helpful to me in my musical pursuits. Just what I was looking for in a book of this type.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for an excellent tool!.......1999-05-29

So, what happens is, you're playin' with a bunch of Nashville dudes, see? They're cuttin' this song, and the big-shot says, "progression is 1, 4, 5 ... the chorus goes: 4, 5, 6minor - three times; fourth time, it goes 4, 5, 1." What do you do? You go, "what key is it in?" 'Course, you should be able to figure that out by a quick listen, and a tap or two on your guitar ... but even if you don't, someone's bound to think you're just lazy, and blurt out, "It's in G, man!" So, okay ... big deal. You can count! You know the song goes G, C, D ... exept in the chorus, which goes C, D, Em - three times, and then C, D, G the fourth time. The cool thing about it, is when the vocalist arrives and he/she can't sing in the key of G! ... it has to be in the key of D! Nothing changes. The progression is still 1, 4, 5, etc. -- only now you're starting from D as #1 and counting. So, now we're gonna play D, G, A ... and the chorus goes G, A, Bm - three times; fourth time is G, A, D. Pretty simple, huh? Everybody can do their private math, quietly, and, in ten minutes when the tape starts to roll, everybody sounds like they knew what was up all the time. The vocalist is very impressed! And, most of all, the guy cutting the checks is smiling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book and "ED"ucational!.......2004-10-03

I read the review by A. A. Cucolo and felt I had to write a rebuttal. I first read this book after checking it out of the library and I so enjoyed the story of Alan Young and Mister Ed that I purchased a personalized copy and later bought someone else a copy.

We both feel the book is true to the title explaining how Alan Young came to work with the horse, of course! It is a thoughtful and insightful look behind the scenes with the people who brought us such a delightful TV show.

Instead of steering you away from the book we suggest you gallop right out, buy a copy and enjoy the ride.

            3 out of 5 stars Horsing around.......2004-04-05

My 9 y.o daughter is a horse fanatic and I always talked about Mr Ed from my childhood days. She seemed half interested but when I got the DVD vol 1 of the series her eyes lit up.I have never seen her so captivated. Even myself with adult wisdom(and the benefits of pause and rewind buttons) marvel at how well that show was done without the aid of animatronics.Being curious about the behind the scenes we purchased Alan Youngs book.It is an easy read covering Alan's life in radio and television and some personal insights (did you know he had a date with Marilyn Munroe)Although I never saw any of Alan's other work he was obviosly a gifted comedian and his syle of writing reflects this. About half the book is devoted to his time with Ed and I guess for most people this is what they are after. There are plenty of photos and information on Ed's life, the cast and trainer and the secrets of his ability to "talk". For the baby boomer generation with its insatiable appetite for the old TV shows this is a must read for all Mister Ed fans.

            5 out of 5 stars HORSE LOVERS - A MUST BUY!.......2004-01-26

I loved this BOOK! I remember watching "Mr. Ed" as a young child when it first came out in the 60's & now in reruns on "TV Land". I oftened wondered how the horse was treated while on the set but after reading this book all of my worries were put to rest. He truely was treated like the star he was. I would recommend this book to anyone who love the show or is just a horse lover in general. I am also glad to see that Alan Young was able to do the things he loved even after the show had ended.

5 out of 5 stars Mister Ed and Me--a funny, charming, rereadable treat!.......2003-11-20

I really loved this book! Having read it 6 or 7 times now, it doesn't lose its' charm or wit. Mr. Young retraces his career from his early days in radio, through the Mister Ed "hay days" and touches briefly on his cartoon voiceovers, most notably that of Scrooge McDuck. His writing style is quite entertaining, and the narrative is hilarious, and touching.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful account that brings tears to your eyes.......1999-09-18

Alan Young, who played Wilbur in the TV series, recounts his years alongside Mister Ed with such passion and light hearted humour that this is my all-time favourite book. It's a wonderful read that brings tears to your eyes. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed this fabulous 60s TV show.

Millions of fans from multiple generations have come to embrace his character of Wilbur Post, and so many still watch his show today. In this wonderful memoir, aside from his classic role, readers will learn details from his personal life such as when he was: cast in films as the all-American boy, even though he was born in England and raised in Canada; handpicked by George Burns to star in Mister Ed; the writer and voice of Scrooge McDuck for Disney s Mickey s Christmas Carol; and was friends with Hollywood elite including Clint Eastwood, Rod Taylor, Mae West and Marilyn Monroe. Throughout my career, strange events have taken place and I ve met some amazing people, says Mr. Young. Through it all, I ve looked back on Mister Ed with the fondest of memories. I hope fans of all ages will do the same.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific New Edition.......2007-07-27

I bought the first version of Mr. Ed and Me when it came out in 1994, but this new expanded version entitled Mr. Ed and Me and More is far superior. With much added text by Alan Young and extensively illustrated with many more rare photographs, this new more elaborate version is well worth the money. This is a quirky and delightful memoir by the man who worked with the world's most famous talking horse, Mister Ed, in one of the most beloved television shows of all time. The book also contains a new section written by actress Connie Hines who played Carol Post, Alan Young's wife on the Mister Ed show. She writes for the first time about her background, life, and, of course, Mister Ed. Alan Young has a charming writing style and it is easy to see the fun and warmth of the show reflected in the man. Full of behind the scenes information about the Mister Ed show, Young also writes about his film roles including the classic film version of H.G. Wells's The Time Machine (1960) directed by George Pal, and his other notable motion pictures such as Mr. Belvedere Goes to College, Androcles and the Lion, Tom Thumb, etc. Young has also provided the voice for Scrooge McDuck for Walt Disney cartoon films. Highly recommended, and a perfect gift book for friends

2 out of 5 stars Good if you want to reinvent the wheel!.......2004-04-25

This book is good if you want to start policy-writing project or want to do PhD in policy writing. In today fast moving world, you want best practices for the most commonly used polices, which you could review and quickly deploy.

I think "Best Practices Information Security Policy Manual" by PacificIS is better choice. It is simple, direct and of right size i.e. 50+ pages, it is ready to use in word format. As you know, if my organization publishes a policy manual of 700 plus pages no one will read. Other very useful resource is Charles Cresson's Information Policy Made Easy with 1300 policies on 725 pages. However, I find it more difficult to select from 1300 polices which are more of academic nature. It also requires lot of editing and customization. I would love to follow it if my company assigns me a project of 3-month just to write a policy.

4 out of 5 stars Not thorough or rigorous, but a good set of secpol topics.......2002-07-21

Security policies are not security, and will not provide any protection. However, as the well-known formulation has it: security is a process. An organization does not "have" security, rather they participate in the process of security. Barnum explains that security policies are a component of the planning aspect of the security process, and as such can provide three advantages. The first is to insure security interoperability across an organization. The second advantage is the visibility given to the policy by management's participation in it, which provides a greater impetus for implementation. The third is to mitigate liability, presumably by the legal value of the policy, and the advantages to security that a policy-driven approach proves. Another reason mentioned is that for some organizations, policy documentation is needed for iso900x compliance. Unstated is the assumption that a security policy might result in greater security. After all, even with all the other purported advantages, a security policy is presumptively about making security better.

At 216 pages, "Writing Information Security Policies" seems just the right size to touch all the bases, but not enough for a home run in the subject area. Good worklike effort, but the diversity of subject matter, and a lack of focus and internal theoretical structure robs the work of providing insightful organizational direction, though it still pays dividends, and is ultimately very worth reading.

The book is divided into three sections. The first is titled "Starting the policy process," and includes such issues as policy needs and roles and responsibilities in the policy process. The second section is writing the security policies in the topical areas. The third is on maintaining policies, including acceptable use and compliance and enforcement. In the first section, the discussion includes such items as:

              1. Identification of assets
              2. Data security
              3. Backups and archives
              4. Intellectual property rights
              5. Incident response and forensics

It is clear from these topics that though the title of the book is Information Security Policies, a more accurate one might be Information and Communication Technology Security Policies, as it is networks and software systems which are the focus throughout.

As far as real-world recommendations and a more serious framework for security policies at highly secured organizations, the reader will have to search elsewhere. However, this book amply suits the need for a series of more conversational approaches to a variety of ICT security policies and subject areas. Also of use are the distinctions between policy, procedure, and implementation, found scattered throughout this book, though unfortunately not strictly adhered to. And though the sample administrative policies found in the appendix are nowhere complete, there are helpful policy formulations throughout. In the second section, the seven major areas of discussion that offer the heart of the book are more of a topical arrangement, than any hierarchical or conceptual approach. They include security policy concerned with the following subject areas:

              1. Physical
              2. Authentication and network
              3. Internet
              4. Email
              5. Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses
              6. Encryption
              7. Software development

There is enough that is badly worded and poorly organized in the book, but it is of real benefit--both on its own merits, and because there is little information of this kind available to practitioners and those managers who might want something that is more than a simple set of forms, but is less than a week-long course in security policy.

5 out of 5 stars Brings best practices to small companies.......2002-07-06

What makes this book an important addition to the IT security body of knowledge is that it makes a case for, and shows how to, create and implement IT security policies in small-to-medium enterprises.

The book itself is a short, somewhat superficial, treatment of IT security policies. It has strengths and weaknesses:

STRENGTHS: It makes a compelling business case for having IT security policies, then leads you through the creation of the more common ones. This material is augmented by the book's accompanying web site that provides all of the sample policies in Appendix C in HTML format (most modern word processing programs, such as MS Word can convert this to their native format without losing any of the embedded styles). Note that the URL given in the book has changed, but it is still active and automatically redirects you to the new URL.

In addition, the book touches on important topics that you may not think of if you're attempting to develop policies on your own. For example, intellectual property rights, law enforcement issues and forensics. These are touched upon, but will raise your awareness of their importance.

WEAKNESSES: The actual development and maintenance of policies is almost an afterthought. Moreover, I thought that a structured approach to threat and vulnerability assessments should have been covered (to be fair, the author discusses major threats on practically every page). I also felt that the policies should have been linked to processes, which is the hallmark of a well written policy, and the importance of clearly defining roles and responsibilities should have been highlighted. I recommend that readers also get a copy of Steve Pages " Achieving 100% Compliance of Policies and Procedures" (ISBN 1929065493) to supplement this book. Page's book is focused solely on policies and procedures development, and will fill in the gaps left in this book.

Overall, this book deserves recognition for raising awareness of the importance of IT security policies to small companies. It also deserves credit for sticking to the fundamentals (cited weaknesses notwithstanding), without overwhelming small enterprise IT professionals who are probably wearing many hats besides IT security. For that audience this book shows the way, and earns my praise.

5 out of 5 stars The right book at the right time.......2002-06-04

Network administration is only 10% of my job, which means the task of creating a security policy for our 40-user systems integration company needed to take a proportional amount of my time and energy. This book provides a lot of helpful examples, and really gives you what you need to get started. The length is appropriate, the language fits both technical and non-technical audiences, and the organization makes sense. It has definitely saved me considerable time and energy.
