                  Book Description

Los Angeles. A city that is synonymous with celebrity and mass-market culture, is also, according to David James, synonymous with social alienation and dispersal. In the communities of Los Angeles, artists, cultural institutions and activities exist in ways that are often concealed from sight, obscured by the powerful presence of Hollywood and its machinations.

In this significant collection of original essays, The Sons and Daughters of Los reconstructs the city of Los Angeles with new cultural connections. Explored here are the communities that offer alternatives to the picture of L..A. as a conglomeration of studios and mass media. Each essay examines a particular piece of, or place in, Los Angeles cultural life: from the Beyond Baroque Poetry Foundation, the Woman's Building, to Highways, and LACE, as well as the achievements of these grassroots initiatives. Also included is critical commentary on important artists, including Harry Gamboa, Jr., and others whose work have done much to shape popular culture in L.A. The cumulative effect of reading this book is to see a very different city take shape, one whose cultural landscape is far more innovative and reflective of the diversity of the city's people than mainstream notions of it suggest.

The Sons and Daughters of Los offers a substantive and complicated picture of the way culture plays itself it out on the smallest scale—in one of the largest metropolises on earth—contributing to a richer, more textured understanding of the vibrancy of urban life and art.

In the late '50s and early '60s, the most subversive show ever to hit the airwaves enchanted millions of American grade-schoolers. The kiddies tuned in to watch Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocket J. Squirrel of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, indulge in cartoon acrobatics and rattle off a series of unbelievable puns. This encyclopedic volume details their every adventure, from chasing the wailing whale Maybe Dick to joining the football team at Wossamotta U. The sinister Pottsylvanian spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale sneak into a goodly share of the pages, along with Dudley Do-Right, the square-jawed Mountie; Snidely Whiplash, the luxuriantly mustachioed villain; Mr. Peabody, the beagle who knows everything; and his boy Sherman. It's a loving, cleverly-illustrated tribute to these saviors of the free world and an admiring paean to the twisted, hilarious genius of Jay Ward, their modest creator, who set the standard for TV animation for generations to come.

5 out of 5 stars a bit of good nostalgia.......2001-07-13

                  Yes it's me again.

I have received my copy of the Rocky and Bullwinkle book and I have loadsa words to describe it: FABULOUS, MARVELLOUS, MAGNIFIQUE, WONDERFUL, FUNNY, WITTY and all that.

The creators of our favourite cartoon heroes and villains obviously had a great time making the series, were well respected by young and old alike. The talent was outstanding. I particularly liked the comments of Matt Groening, (he of Simpsoms fame) and the respect that was well earned over the years.

Louis Chunovic certainly did his homework well in producing this gem of a book. I thought it was a great tribute to Jay and all the crew who made these characters possible, and I wish the British were more aware of them.

Rocky, Bullwinkle, Mr Peabody, Dudley, Aesop & son, Sherman, Cloyd and Gidney, as well as those no-goodniks Boris, Natasha and Fearless Leader (or Mr Big, as he's often known as) have gone down in the cartoon hall of fame along with Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, and the Warner Bros characters.

I say to you brothers and sisters, if you don't know of the moose and squirrel then where've you been the last 40 years?

Cartoon lovers, little and big kids should rush themselves this book and WALLOW!!!!

A great read and great fun!!! GO BUY! NOW!!!

                  Bye bye for now.

To begin with, if you are a R&B fan (as I am), you have to have this book. It is beautifully done physically and worth the price just for the plot synopsis of all the hundreds of episodes. The lack of five stars is due to the fact that it could have been so much better. There is remarkably little text in the book, which is disguised by very large type and great amounts of white space. I was able to read it all in little more than an hour. Then what text there is is devoted almost exclusively to the eccentricities of Jay Ward and his outlandish promotional stunts for the show. This is interesting but I would like to have learned more about the creation and development of the series. Why a moose and squirrel, for example? Then, as the author freely admits at the end there is almost nothing about the other denizens of the R&B world, Sherman & Peabody, Aesop, Dudley Do-Right, etc. Even the plot synopsis was lacking in that it was mainly just a recitation of the continuing plotline which was probably the least humorous thing about the episodes. It would have been better to follow the model used by the Simpsons episode guides (although admittedly, these came out AFTER this book was published) and give classic lines, contemporary references, things the viewer may have missed, etc. In conclusion, this book, like Prohibition, is a noble but failed experiment.

Long in retirement, our old pals Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. By striking a deal with Hollywood, all three have broken free of cartoon conventions and are now real, live bad guys! And, of course, they are planning to take over the world. But not before FBI Agent Karen Sympathy plucks Rocky and Bullwinkle out of retirement and sets them on a zany and hilarious ride from cartoon reruns to a brave, new live-action world!

5 out of 5 stars Really Bad Television.......2001-12-21

Hi yes I'm back, the 46 year old Rocky and Bullwinkle fan.

I have read this book and found it great fun. I went to see the movie no fewer than 5 TIMES!!!! Yes I love Moose and Squirrel that much!!!

I was 10 when the cartoon was on television here in England, and still have fond memories of it.

I loved the plot, Fearless Leader, Boris and Natasha breaking out of Cartoon Land and wreaking havoc through a hypnotic television to take over the planet.

HELP, WHO CAN STOP THEM!!!? Why Rocky and Bullwinkle of course, with the help of a beautiful FBI agent, Karen Sympathy (Piper Perabo). The stars: Rocket J Squirrel and Bullwinkle J Moose, together with Robert de Niro as Fearless Leader (very meanly played) Jason Alexander (a wicked Boris Badenov) and Rene Rousso (a mean Natasha Fatale).

All three played their cartoon counterparts really good and Rocky was his usual heroic self along with the world's coolest moose, Bullwinkle who proved to us never to underestimate his antlers.

Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars The Adventures Of Rocky and Bullwinkle: The Movie.......2000-06-17

If You loved the cartoon, you WILL love the book! The Plot is: Fearless leader, Boris and Natasha Beak into the real world, and the only way to get Rocky and Bullwinkle into the real world, is to green light the movie. So as the evil treo would say: " Moose And Squerl" are off to get the evil treo, before Fearless leader hipnotyzes everybody through his Television Station, RBTV(Really bad telivison) so he can be elected. It's Better than it sounds! Will Rocky and Bullwinkle make it in time? READ THIS AND GO SEE THE MOVIE...! And Go to the movie's web site!...

It's cute, it's clever. You can just hear Bullwinkle's voice as you turn the pages and lift the flaps. My only wish is that the book had ben bigger and longer.

I'd read all the reviews prior to this book. Seemed pretty promising, although I wasn't sure how easy it would be for beginners, but I thought I'd take a chance. The book itself was great with the descriptions and the photos to accompany them up until it came time to rig Morfi. Steps were skipped, though I'm not sure if the author simply assumed the reader would know what to do, or if he accidentally left them out. Certain sections tell you to copy and paste multiple times, but don't tell you what to do what the items you've just pasted, and bam!; Instantly you're at a new section, with a detailed summary of what the previous section should have looked like, without showing you how to get there. I haven't even started animating yet, let alone started the more complex model in the second section of the book. If you're looking to model low poly characters, and are somewhat of a beginner, the book is great! For Rigging/Animation I would recommend purchasing a second, more detailed/complete book.

Just finnished reading this book from A to Z. I have to tell you that even do I've been working with LW for some time, I still learned some great tips and tricks.
I highly recommand this Book to anyone who's thinking about 3D animation. I hope that Volume 2 will bring me the same value but I strongly belief that I will love that Book even more.

5 out of 5 stars The is the best Character Creation book I've found........2006-07-05

The book, 1Cartoon Character Creation Volume 1 & 2, has straightforward techniques approach to Learning Advanced LightWave Skills and Knowledge. I purchased Timothy Albee's Lightwave 3D, "Getting Started Guide" which came with my purchase of the program, LightWave from Newtek. The Book got me started back in 2005. (A general skills book covers a broad range of LightWave. But does not get too deep, which is good for beginners.)

I was very interested in and loved cartooning and character creation in 3D. So I purchased Jonny Gorden's "Cartoon Character Creation-Volume 2". If ya don't know and wanna learn Rigging right, get this book. Jonny be getting off with his techniques in this bad boy. Loved the book.

(Jonny's book covers A through Z in Rigging and Animation mostly plus overviews on general knowledge stuff as well. But since I already learned the basics with "Getting Started" I was able to get deep into Jonny's techniques.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to creating your own toons!.......2005-08-04

I brought this book when I was initially learning LightWave and had zero experience. I recommend buying 'Essential Lightwave 3D 8 ' prior or with this book if you are just beginning as this book assumes at least a basic understanding of what the tools are, what they do and where they are located.

I found the book itself to be great. It de-mystifies the entire process of creating a cartoon character from bulbous head to stubby toe. The sections on texturing were particularly nice, going over all the ins and outs of UV mapping, when, where and how.

Now here is the thing that makes this book great. When I purchased this book I was deciding whether to upgrade my LightWave to version 8 or buy SoftImage|XSI. I ended up going with SoftImage and I used this book several times to model entire characters in SoftImage. This made it apparent to me how clear and concise the steps by step processes and detailed images are. I later upgraded LightWave just to model the pig-boy toon featured inside, among other things.

While much of the lessons covered can be found in online tutorials or videos about character modeling, this book is an invaluable reference. I highly recommend it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great must-have book!.......2005-03-28

This book is a great one to have in your Lightwave library, and even if you use another software package you will be able to follow his techniques to help you master the fascinating and technical aspects of animation. Jonny does assume you have basic knowledge of Lightwave 3D and have the ability to move around and understand it's interface. What I loved about this book is that doesn't tell you to do this and do that, He actually explains why! This is from setting up the interface to why he works the way he does. this book goes into great detail explaining how to create a character (and why you create it in a certain way) and how to texture it in a realistic way. I bought also his companion book Volume Two,because as he explains, there is just so much information you NEED to know!
It's great reading and chock full of information, includes a disc with all the files and screen shots to help you along the way.

This is full of great inormation however why these book publishers only use back and white imagaes confuses me. This is an artist book ususally meaning we are VISUAL people. So why every image is on flat black and white is horrible for a Graphic computer book. HUGE TURN OFF!

Other than that the text is informative but thats it!

I hink most people read Maya books because they are on nice Glossy Full Colored pages. When you pay 35.00-75.00 for a book you expect some colored imgaes if not all.

Wait for the next revision that might cover LW9's nodal texture system.
Apparently someone with talent and an understanding beyond the newbie basics will be taking over that version so just wait until then.

4 out of 5 stars good not great.......2006-05-18

I got this book because I was very impressed by Leighs texturing tutorial she has on her website. On the positive side she does cover the basic concepts of shader settings and does so in a way that you can apply it to any 3D app youre using (Lightwave is old and obsolete 3D app, infact Leigh doesnt use Lightwave anymore). But I was a tad bit disappointed that it didnt go more into photoshop painting technics for creating textures (that might be an unfair critisism since this book is part of a Lightwave series). But the thing that really annoyed me about the book is that it was that the pics were all in B&W, and so color copys of the pics are included on the CD to be viewed on a computer. I mean why not just make this book an ebook and eliminate passing between a book and computer altogether? That is pretty cheap of the publisher to not print this book in color.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to my Lightwave library.......2006-05-09

Despite "Dan Blocker's" conspiracy theory, I found this book to be just what I needed for Lightwave texturing. The LW manual is of limited help and several other books, while great in their own ways (sorry, Dan and Tim), left me wanting a bit more info dressing up my models (especially with regards to UV mapping).
For the record, I have been to the boards Leigh moderates but I have never spoken or otherwise corresponded with her. I don't always agree with her views but I can say that this book delivered for me.
I also encourage you to visit her web site. Leigh is one of those people who give and give to the 3D community and for her efforts sometimes gets bashed in the process.

                              2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-01-07

I really have mixed emotions about this book. I ordered this online but wish I had the opportunity to see it before making the decision to buy it. It does a good job covering basics but a good web search will yield as good or superior tutorials. The included files are quite mediocre and and just reinforces the impression that the author possesses an adequate level of skills in the 2DCG realm.
After reading through the other reviews here it is quite apparent the author has enlisted her industry and web friends to blast anyone who presents an honest review. This book will work for beginners just fine so I give it an honest 2 stars with one of those stars for effort, not execution. For the intermediate and above crowd, look elsewhere for help.

John Jordan's review is an good example of the market segment that this book might help, the 3D newbie. Leigh's weak abilities in the artistic department are far eclipsed by the magnitude of her shameless self promotional plugs and pathetic attempts to appear selfless. CGTalk has turned into a shell of its former self thanks to the efforts of book promoters such as Leigh Van duh Bile and her ilk.
