Sheet music.......2001-04-26
I'm very disappointed in this item. I was expecting information, not sheet music. There was no written explanation of this product. I would not have boughten it if I knew it was only sheet music. I have liner notes. Also bought the Kirkland book for the same reason. Once again, no explanation of the product. When it came it was some kind of scientific outline, not even a book, but a disclaimer that it was unreturnable.

Book Description
A culture as ancient as India's, as layered and as plural, inevitably rejoices in a fascinatingly rich history of food, feeding and eating. The most ancient scriptures prescribe and proscribe on the subject, life cycle rituals are intricately bound up with it, and the symbolism of food is part of everyday life. Land of Milk and Honey tells the stories of India's food. Rich in detail and discovery, the essays included here range from the rituals of propitiatory meals - from feeding the gods, the priest, the son-in-law or the dead - to the historic symbolism of milk, and from the probable fifteenth century Portuguese origins of the traditional sweets of Bengal to the intricate variety of art connected with food and ritual.
Book Description
Though it’s primarily Punjabi food that’s become known as Indian food in the United States, India is as much an immigrant nation as America, and it has the vast range of cuisines to prove it. In Eating India, award-winning food writer and Bengali food expert Chitrita Banerji takes readers on a marvelous odyssey through a national cuisine formed by generations of arrivals, assimilations, and conquests. With each wave of newcomers—ancient Aryan tribes, Persians, Middle Eastern Jews, Mongols, Arabs, Europeans—have come new innovations in cooking, and new ways to apply India’s rich native spices, poppy seeds, saffron, and mustard to the vegetables, milks, grains, legumes, and fishes that are staples of the Indian kitchen. In this book, Calcutta native and longtime U.S. resident Banerji describes, in lush and mouthwatering prose, her travels through a land blessed with marvelous culinary variety and particularity.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read, even for an Indian reader !.......2007-07-23
You think you know India, but after reading Eating India, you realize how wonderfully rich, tasty, and complex is the "Khichdi" called India. The real melting pot through millenia that has absorbed the waves of Aryans, Huns, Mongols, Greeks, Mughals, Europeans, and many others into its ever changing but unique identity is explored here in this book through the medium of food. The book is more than just a food book. It offers a prismatic look at the people, history, geography, and culture of the various regions of India. I grew up in Gujarat, but after reading the book, my salivary glands are working overtime, and I cannot wait to visit Ahmedabad and check out Agashiye restaurant. For the gastronomically adventurous traveller, especially if she has the digestive immune system that can handle a few choice microbes, the pleasures of eating at a roadside "dhaba" is not to be missed.
A wonderful book for anyone who loves food, travel, and history. Desis and non-desis alike will find it stimulating and appetizing.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent and thorough introduction to quintessential Indian cooking - with easy, failproof recipes.......2007-09-13
Cooking the Indian Way is simply the best introduction to Indian cooking for the novice.
A nice bonus: an easy way to plan and serve well-coordinated dinners which include both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
This delightful little gem will teach you how to make complete Indian dinners, including savory Indian breads, chutneys, yogurt dips, many vegetarian dishes, plus spicey fish, yogurt chicken, and several other treats. The tips will enable you to quickly discover how to use Indian spices to nice effect in creating your own dishes, including your own tea and signature spice blends.
The recipes in Vijay Madavan's Cooking the Indian Way have been so popular with my family and friends that several recipes now number among their favorites -- the ones which are most often and enthusiastically requested. Be sure to make large portions when you serve these to your guests -- the dishes are quite filling, but you will be astonished at how quickly they will disappear!
This title is one in a series, "Cooking the Easy Way," which our local library features in the juvenile/culture section. Studying cuisine is among the best ways to learn about a culture, and so I've happened to try several from this series with my homeschooled daughter. This is the nicest of the Indian cookbooks we've found, in any section: it includes a nice introduction to the regional differences in Indian cooking, and informative cultural information, as well.
We're so glad to be able to create, at home, many dishes we once spent quite a small fortune on, in expensive restaurants. Thanks to Vijay Madavan, my work as amateur chef is gaining a bit of a reputation!
Book Description
The extreme diversity of Indian food culture--including the dizzying array of ingredients and dishes--is made manageable in this groundbreaking reference. India has no national dish or cuisine; however, certain ingredients, dishes, and cooking styles are typical of much of the subcontinent's foodways. There are also common ways of thinking about food. The balanced coverage found herein covers many states ignored by previous food writers. Students will find much of cultural interest here to complement country studies and foodies will discover fresh perspectives. From prehistoric times there has been considerable mixing of cultures and cuisines within India. Today, the endless variations in cuisine reflect religious, community, regional, and economic differences and histories. Sen, a noted author on Indian cuisine, consummately encapsulates the foodways in historical context, including the influence of the British period (the "Raj"). Among the topics covered are the restrictions of various religions and castes and the northern wheat-based vs. the southern rice-based cuisine, with an extensive review of each regional cuisine with typical meals. She characterizes the only-recent restaurant culture, with mention of Indian fare offered abroad. In addition, the Indian sweet tooth so apparent in the dishes made for many festivals and celebrations is highlighted. The roles of diet and health are also explained, with an emphasis on Ayruveda, which is gaining support in Western countries. A plethora of recipes for different regions and occasions complements the text.
Customer Reviews:
A Superlative Insight into a Culinary Heritage.......2005-04-13
As the author says, this is not a recipe book. What this book does is that it meshes together extremely well the relationship between a complex culture and its culinary heritage. Replete with historical tid-bits, cultural trivia, origins of different dishes that we have become used to, this is a simply marvelous piece of work that will satisfy even cynics. Whether you are into food or history, this is a must-read!
A valuable addition to any in-depth section on India.......2004-11-11
Plenty of college-level texts cover Indian history and culture with mention of food - but few focus exclusively on the connections between food and culture as does Colleen Taylor Sen's Food And Culture In India. Using a historical approach, Indian culinary expert Sen provides an analysis of how cultures and cuisines have mixed within India from prehistoric to modern times. There are recipes peppered throughout, but the heart of Food And Culture In India lies in its cultural approach and college-level collections will consider it a valuable addition to any in-depth section on India.

Book Description
The agricultural paradigm is already undergoing a shift in focus from food security towards nutritional quality. Horticultural crops besides improving biological productivity and nutritional standards also have enormous export potential. This group of crops comprising fruits, vegetables, root and tuber crops, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and condiments and ornamental crops, would constitute core of any such agro-economic strategy. In addition to supplementing the economy and national food grid by providing fresh and processed fruits, vegetable, nuts etc., horticultural crops also help to promote diversification. Depletion of plant genetic resources in areas of diversity at a rapid pace is a matter of global concern. This book profiles all scientific management aspects of the horticultural crop genetic resources including their diversity, conservation and sustainable utilization. It also addresses vital concerns regarding management of horticultural crop genetic resources from diverse perspectives and provides recommendations for action in certain areas of research that must be pursued with intensity. The publication would serve as a valuable comprehensive scientific reference for breeders, researchers, teachers, students and policy makers in biology and agriculture.
Product Description
On September 26, 1968, Hawaii Five-O premiered on CBS. The shows exotic locale and quality writing and acting made it a fixture in the networks line-up for the next 12 years. Today the detective series continues to be very popular in syndication. The shows history is covered first, focusing on its development and its stars. Complete casts and credits for all regulars are provided for each season; the episode guide gives the title, original air date, director, producer, guest stars, a detailed synopsis of each show, and information on Honolulu residents who appeared in it.
Customer Reviews:
A mediocre book.......2007-07-15
I've had the hardcover for quite awhile. It reads like a self-published fan book, which it probably is. It lacks real insight into what made the show special. The episode reviews are amateurish. Lots of "fan" comments and observations sprinkled throughout. Very little substance about the history and making of the show. Not recommended. If you want an ep. guide, get one online.
Great companion to the series DVDs (at last!!).......2007-04-22
Now that they are finally releasing the TV series on DVD (faster please!) this book is a great companion-the background stories, trivia and tidbits are terrific. It's fun watching the episodes to look for the things Ms. Rhodes mentions-the "looks", exchanges, dialogue, relationships, the music. It's also interesting to consider, as Ms Rhodes does, the issues that were raised by the series and how characters were treated, given the era and the nature of the show. There are summaries about the trials and tribulations of the series production and scheduling for each season, as well as for some significant episodes.
I remember some of the episodes from my childhood but have not seen the show in decades. I'm looking forward to reading up on the episodes, then watching them as more seasons are released in the future. I enjoyed reading Ms. Rhodes opinions and commentaries and am looking forward to comparing her throughts to mine.
As an episode guide the material is kind of sketchy; there is a very general description of each episode, and sometimes there are spoilers. A careful reader can intuit most of the episode plots, and there is more detailed plot information available elsewhere on-line.
I wish there were more photographs, especially candid ones and better quality reproduction. I would also love more anecdotes from the set (the cast and crew "talk story") and about life in the islands during production. But then maybe someone should write a history of production and pictorial guide; this is not that book. It is an episode-by-episode critical commentary (most a page or less in length), with an introduction to each season, and information about the cast of each episode and the crew for each season.
WORST "episode guide" I HAVE EVER SEEN!.......2006-08-10
Beware! This is NOT an episode guide. It is only commentary on all of the episodes. An episode guide SHOULD give a synopsis, or at least 2 or 3 lines describing the episode. This book lists each episode title with credits. Then it makes commentary on each episode and only in a rare few cases does it describe the episode. It assumes that you already know each episode. Descriptions of most of the episodes just don't exist in this book. What an expensive disappointment! Save your money and use internet episode guides for this great TV series.
A Very Good Effort of Karen Rhodes and we Hawai'i Five-0 fans are grateful.......2006-01-07
I could pick bones with some minor errors in here.
I think I know a bit more than Karen does on some
things, but overall (since I lived in Hawai'i and
attended U/H) it's a very thorough effort. Good
job Karen!
LET'S GET THE EPISODES ON DVD!!.......2004-12-23
Of all the Amazon releases I have been looking for, HAWAII FIVE-O, THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON, is without a doubt, the one DVD set I have been looking for over the years.
WHEN IS IT COMING TO DVD?, IT'S LONG OVERDUE!!
