The Beatles Are Coming!: The Birth of Beatlemania in America
ASIN: 0966264959 |
Book Description
"The Beatles Solo on Apple Records" is the companion piece to Bruce Spizer's critically acclaimed "The Beatles on Apple Records." This book details the solo records released by John, Paul, George and Ringo on their own Apple label in America, starting with the December, 1968, release of George's "Wonderwall Music" album and ending with the December, 1975, release of George's single "This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying)." All solo projects are covered, including all of the albums and singles released by John & Yoko and Paul McCartney & Wings, as well as classic albums such as "Imagine," "Band On The Run," "All Things Must Pass" and "Ringo." The book provides complete session and chart information and shows all picture sleeves, album covers and label variations, along with many of the promotional posters, displays and trade magazine ads. The book is hard cover and printed on heavy weight glossy paper. It has over 900 images (all in full color or original black & white) spread throughout the book's 358 pages.

THE BEATLES SOLO ON APPLE RECORDS.......2007-02-10
For the completest. Bruce Spizers' second Beatles Apple publication dissects and represents the many international incarnations of the individual output of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr whilst they were still associated with Apple Records. Sadly much of this output was merely associated with Apple due to contractractual obligations. In some cases under protest. But in those heady days beginning just prior to the saddest breakup in Rock history.. all up to the late seventies, the solo Beatles material from the four ex Beatles are among some of the most popular albums in musical history. McCartney, John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band, Ram, Imagine, Band On The Run, All Things Must Pass, Venus & Mars and Ringo, all contain a wealth of popular hits, that were less conspicuous in the later solo Apple years. There are a few omissions, such as the Australian release of J.L. & The Plastic Ono Band (which had a unique Black & White label on Apple), but generally the material collected and presented by Mr Spizer presents an unbelieveable array of variable releases of the same albums throughout the world. It's a fascinating look at a unique era in music & memorabilia. If you love the detailed background of Beatles history, as I do. You'll read this book over and over again.
Take a Bite into the Apple .......2007-01-10
The followup to Spizer's book on The Beatles' group efforts on Apple, this goes through all of the band's solo Apple releases. Again, there's so much information here! And again, if you're not interested in all of the deep information on the various pressings, label copy, etc., you can skip it. Although you'll find that the Beatles had a lot of fun with what they did with Apple on their solo releases, and there's plenty of photos of various labels, album and singles covers, etc. I don't know where Spizer got the energy to do this 5 times (he's got 4 other similar books on Beatles releases), but I'm glad he did.
A long and winding road.......2006-03-20
The Beatles 2nd UK lp (that became America's 1st) was released Nov. 22, 1963. The White album was released on Nov. 22, 1968. What tremendous growth in 5 years! They grew together and apart...this book will clue you in on every nuance of the solo years. Keep saying over and over, "it was only a band..."
Another Great Entry in Series, A Tiny Bit Less of a "Must-Own".......2005-08-07
Bruce Spizer has now put together five books in this series of looks at the Beatles (and with this latest volume, the solo years on Apple in the early-mid 70's) and their relationships with record labels Vee-Jay, Capitol, and Apple.
As fans of these books know, much of each book covers very detailed, minute bits of information about the release of each LP, Single, EP, etc. The cost of the books is probably due in large part to each book being printed in complete full color on every page. A large percentage of the pages are covered with every label variation of every release. If you're not a hardcore collector intensely interested in what are usually very, very minute label differences (mostly different fonts, different perimenter print on the labels), then I have to say that some of the wow factor is missing.
What has made the other entries in this series must-have books for any Beatles scholar, even if they are not interested in label variations, is the detailed history Spizer uncovers behind the Beatles' relationship with their labels. Spizer uncovers long-forgotten or never-known stories behind how the labels devised albums or singles, and many other interesting details. His book on the Vee-Jay label's relationship with the Beatles was a complete revelation that completely changed scholars' perception of the relationship between the group and Vee-Jay, and would have been a must-have for Beatles scholars even without any pictures or illustrations of any kind.
There are interesting pictures in all of the volumes, including the "Solo Beatles on Apple" other than label variations. Pictures of alternate album covers and other artwork, as well as promotional items all adorn the pages.
"The Solo Beatles on Apple..." is perhaps a tiny bit less indispensable as compared to Spizer's other books only because it doesn't have as much revelatory information as the previous entries (particularly the Vee-Jay book and the Capitol books). All of the books contain Spizer's own reviews of the music itself, as well as basic information on the background of the songs and albums. This is the only information in Spizer's books which isn't indispensible. It's all well-written, it just doesn't offer any new information. Because the "Solo Beatles" book has a bit less of the new, wow-factor type of facts that made the Vee-Jay and Capitol books so interesting, the "Solo Beatles" book doesn't have quite as much to offer in terms of the text. Spizer admits that he came into writing the book with the opinion that the Beatles' solo work doesn't hold up well to the group's output. Listening to the albums apparently did change is mind to some degree, but I do see just a bit less enthusiasm behind the writing of this book as compared to the other group entries.
Still, between the ample color artwork and still plenty of interesting details uncovered by Spizer, this book is still a must-own for Beatles scholars and record collectors. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.
A depth unequalled by competing, lighter Beatles coverage's.......2005-08-06
Avid Beatles collectors who already have all the collector's guides to Apple Records may imagine they already have all they need - until they confront The Beatles Solo On Apple Records: The Stories Behind The Entire Beatles Solo Catalog On Apple Records Including Imagine, Band On The Run, All Things Must Pass And Ringo. Packed with black and white and color photos of records, vintage posters, ad illustrations and more, The Beatles Solo On Apple Records supplements extensive illustrations with meticulous background details for each recording's origins. In using the recordings to ground background history, The Beatles Solo produces a depth unequalled by competing, lighter Beatles coverage's - and insights simply unavailable in price guides alone. Not for the casual readers who seeks a light history, but perfect for the avid Beatles fan who needs to know everything about the group, it's individual members, and their recordings.

Exceptional reference guide to Apple Records.......2007-02-02
This is a reference guide to the products, mostly recordings, put out in the US and Canada by Apple Records, the Beatles' own record label. The Apple label began operations in 1968 that continue to this day. This well-illustrated book covers not just Beatles on Apple and solo Beatles on Apple; ALL artists released on Apple get equal and thorough coverage. (Even some unreleased, like Richard Brautigan and Delaney and Bonnie.)
If you are a collector of Apple Records materials, this is a must-have. If you are not a collector, it will be of lesser interest.
The "Special Interest" and "Apple Corps" sections in particular contain info that is hard to come by otherwise. The bonus CD contains material of interest to completists.
Compared to an earlier edition of AppleLog that I have, the images of the record labels are far superior in this new edition.
I have two main quibbles with this book:
1) not every label variation is well-covered
2) the estimated prices listed by the author differ from what I see in record stores and at on-line auctions. They are significantly inflated in this guide, both at the VG and NM levels, in my opinion.
If not for those issues, I would give it 5 stars.
If you read this book plus Bruce Spizer's books on Apple Records, you are well on the way to knowing much of what there is to be known about Apple Records products, advertisements, etc. I recommend all three books.
If you want to read a history of Apple Records, "Apple to the Core" and "The World's Longest Cocktail Party" are titles to look for.

Review.......2007-07-21
This is a fantastic book. I don't know where to begin. It tells the whole story of Apple and gives us a lot of info on the business/Apple side of the group. It is presented as interesting stories, and there are a lot of quotes from those involved. I have read a few hundred Beatle books, and this is in my top 5. If you want to hear about the music, though, the book will not be of much interest to you. This is about the business of Apple.
Required Reading for Fab Fanatics.......2007-01-29
This is a fantastic book. Detailed, well-researched and filled with the kind of arcana that this life-long Beatle fan loves. This is a history of the Apple Organization from its inception to today. It follows the careers of Apple employees, the few artists that were signed to the Apple record label, those signed to Apple music publishing and, of course, Beatles are found throughout. Based on research, but the author also conducted interviews with still living Apple staffers, artists, etc. Fascinating.

Beatles Nerds Unite!.......2007-01-10
Amazing book, massive amounts of information on all of the band's Apple releases (from Hey Jude on). This is for the HARDCORE collector, with info on label copy, different pressings, etc. You can skip through a lot of that if it doesn't matter to you, but there's a ton of great info in here. After I bought this one and read through it I had to buy Spizer's other Beatles books. Good lord they're heavy... And absolutely necessary.
wow, what an indepth book!!.......2005-05-14
I love this book. I met Bruce twice. hes very insightful and knows what hes talking about. Fabulous book, if you want a real deep education in the later 60's beatles albums and conflicts. Once, i thaught i would sit and read it for 5 minutes and i was so caught up in the book, an hour had passed by, didn't even know it. great book. get this!!!
Must Have for Any Beatles Collector.......2003-09-03
I could not put this book down. It was like reading a mystery novel. Strange thing to say about a "coffee table" book. It not only covers the tiniest details for the avid collector (such as record number, label typeface, and pressing location), but also covers details about when and how the music was made (such as what recording studio was used, the dates the recordings were made, who was in the studio, who played what, etc.). I was lucky to have met Bruce Spizer and get an autographed copy. I look forward to reading his other books.
Can't wait for Apple volume 2.......2003-08-17
I'll keep this simple. If you are a Beatles collector and you don't have everthing Bruce Spizer publishes on them, you are missing the best books on the subject matter. Period. With full color beautiful reproduction on every page, it's just like having the real item in front of you. Informative and essential text too, don't think twice, get them while you can.
E IS FOR EXCELLENT, EXHAUSTIVE & ENJOYABLE!.......2003-07-19
I received this book a couple of days ago with it's Vee-Jay companion (see my seperate review of that one). Like his other books including the Capitol Volumes, Bruce Spizer takes us where no one has gone before. You get a real history lesson with his works. This particular volume answers a lot of questions. The "Hey Jude" LP's release was always mystery especially as it was released here in Australia as part of The Beatles regular catalogue. I've wondered why 1964's "Can't Buy Me Love" & "I Should Have Known Better" had been included as they seemed out of place on that LP next to the other 8 tracks as those recordings came from 1966-69 era and particularly at the expense of "The Inner Light" & "Get Back". Bruce answers that question and so many more. The depictions of the originally planned "Get Back" covers are wonderful and it's kind of a pity that that cover wasn't retained when "Let It Be" was released eventually. Skipping ahead to the Anthology stuff and while I'm glad I bought CD & the vinyl 45's of "Free As A Bird" & "Real Love", I now wish I'd done the same with the Anthology LP's instead of just buying the CD's. I'll have to hunt around now. Overall Bruce Spizer has outdone himself yet again especially with his massive attention to detail which is never an issue with this author. However Bruce, how about a section somewhere (or even another book!) on the Capitol/Parlophone compilations of the 70's & 80's after Apple was suspended/ceased in 1976 - Namely "Rock 'n' Roll Music", "Love Songs", The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" (though this was probably covered in the Capitol Albums book) "Rarities" (US Version), "Reel Music", "Beatles Ballads" & "20 Greatest Hits". These particular albums probably merit something of a mention in their own right. In the meantime I really look forward to his "Apple - The Solo Years Book" in 2004. As I've said elsewhere, if you're a diehard Beatles fan or a just a collector of great Rock Music books, then you should have this one gracing your collection.

Book Description
Through exclusive photos and personal stories, former US manager of Apple Records and Grammy Award winning producer Ken Mansfield offers a compelling memoir that delves into his life in the 1960s and '70s and his unique partnership with the Beatles and other musicians who orbited their world. As observer, friend, and colleague, Mansfield sat in their recording sessions, partied in their swimming pools, took their irate calls, and publicized their successes. Entertaining, historically accurate, and illuminating a side of the Fab Four known only to a few like Mansfield,
The White Book shines fresh light on the true characters behind the cultural phenomena that revolutionized a generation. As the former Head of Apple Records International, Jack Oliver, has said of Ken,
"He is one of the few insiders left that bore witness to the highs and lows of those insane days when we ruled the world."

my new love..........2006-08-29
i have never read anything by henry rollins before i purchased this book. and i fell in love w/ his writing. i have now bought almost every book by him and in the process of reading them. his books touch me in a way, and help too. its hard for me to find a book, let alone an author that i like as much as henry rollins and his books
Very few touched me as this..........2005-11-06
this is the most honest, heartbreaking work I've read. It puts your personal misery into perspective, reminding you what it means to live life. Even after you lose those that make you whole.
Honest Writing.......2003-09-18
There is so much farcity in the world today that it's so good to come across a writer like Henry who's willing to show everyone what he thinks, how he feels, what his life is like and how he perceives the world around him.
This book is very brutal and honest, which I think always makes for good writing. He has a very clear perception of the people around him and how they think, which lets him view the world from all sides including his own. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to open their eyes to someone else's reality.
The world's most powerful book.......2002-03-03
7 years ago, a friend of mine read me a poem from "Now Watch Him Die" (They were seperate books back then). It's the one on page 164 of this volume, the one that starts with "I love you and you'll never know." Since then, I have not gone anywhere without a copy of these books close at hand. They are an all-encompassing chronicle of one man's solipsism, isolation, desperation and depression. This may not sound fascinating, but that man happens to be Henry Rollins, who has a talent for intensity and a command of words rivaled by no one of this era. Not since Bukowski has someone used so little to say so much. If you are ready for a descent into a maelstrom of anger, violence and pure, blinding pain, then this is the book for you. If you're looking for something sappy, sweet and redemptive, then try Oprah's Book Club instead.
An excellent albeit depressing work.......2001-08-18
I bought this book on a whim one day from a local bookstore and wasn't able to put it down. It's a brutally honest rendition of a life filled with tragedy, depression, doubt and one unsuccesful relationship after another. It's one of the more depressing books I've read, but I pick it up even when I'm feeling down. The intense emotion is almost palpable, you'll feel every bit of rage, heart-ache and frustration, loneliness and confusion. See a Grown Man Cry is worth every penny you pay, every minute you read and every pang of grief you feel for the suffering Mr. Rollins. If you ever by a book by Henry Rollins it should be this one.

Book Description
Conventional wisdom holds that television was a co-conspirator in the repressions of Cold War America, that it was a facilitator to the blacklist and handmaiden to McCarthyism. But Thomas Doherty argues that, through the influence of television, America actually became a more open and tolerant place. Although many books have been written about this period, Cold War, Cool Medium is the only one to examine it through the lens of television programming.
To the unjaded viewership of Cold War America, the television set was not a harbinger of intellectual degradation and moral decay, but a thrilling new household appliance capable of bringing the wonders of the world directly into the home. The "cool medium" permeated the lives of every American, quickly becoming one of the most powerful cultural forces of the twentieth century. While television has frequently been blamed for spurring the rise of Senator Joseph McCarthy, it was also the national stage upon which America witnessed -- and ultimately welcomed -- his downfall. In this provocative and nuanced cultural history, Doherty chronicles some of the most fascinating and ideologically charged episodes in television history: the warm-hearted Jewish sitcom The Goldbergs; the subversive threat from I Love Lucy; the sermons of Fulton J. Sheen on Life Is Worth Living; the anticommunist series I Led 3 Lives; the legendary jousts between Edward R. Murrow and Joseph McCarthy on See It Now; and the hypnotic, 188-hour political spectacle that was the Army-McCarthy hearings.
By rerunning the programs, freezing the frames, and reading between the lines, Cold War, Cool Medium paints a picture of Cold War America that belies many black-and-white clichés. Doherty not only details how the blacklist operated within the television industry but also how the shows themselves struggled to defy it, arguing that television was preprogrammed to reinforce the very freedoms that McCarthyism attempted to curtail.

Superior Socio-Cultural History.......2006-05-22
The author should take a bow. He has written a wonderfully balanced, anecdotal-rich account of the simultaneous evolution of the Cold War, TV and political culture in the Age of McCarthy (which is, in all too many ways, an age we are still in.) That the junior senator from the cheeshead state was a craven opportunist is as well known now as it was even then, but what he exploited via the new electronic medium was the pervasive fear that subversion lurked behind every vacuum tube as well as behind every State Department desk.
Terrific.......2004-05-18
Cold War, Cool Medium is a terrific and compulsively readable study of McCarthyism in the context of the early history of television. Doherty astutely establishes the way televison worked in its formative days. Then he shows how its weaknesses aided in the rise of McCarthy and how both its strengths and weaknesses aided in his fall. Superb and easiy to read history.

Review of Complete Digital Photography.......2007-09-26
There is no doubt, this is the most informative and well written book on digital photography. The book is well worth the price.
Review.......2007-08-14
A little bit long winded, but very complete and good for a fairly early starter in digital photography. Some added tutorials on disc which are quite handy, since its a very visual topic.

Book Description
The fourth edition of this perennial bestseller reflects the continuing rapid advances and new technologies in image processing. While this edition retains its emphasis on image measurement, new and revamped material highlights recent changes in solid state cameras, compression methods, and printing innovations. It also features new information on image restoration, fuzzy logic in image processing, and biological applications. Virtually every chapter has been updated, many quite extensively, and new images further enhance the presentation. The fourth edition of this standard-setting reference will undoubtedly reign as the premier resource for the field of image processing.
Customer Reviews:
great book focusing on concepts rather than math.......2007-08-17
I am a biologist with a little background in math. Using this book and matlab I could quickly implement basic feature recognition tools to analyze microscope images. The book focuses on concepts and explains them in intuitive language rather than in mathematical terms. Overall, it worked perfectly for me, but could be over-simplying for people with technical background.
A seminal and essential addition.......2007-05-08
Image processing is used to improve the visual appearance and transmission of images to a the human eye. It also concerns the preparation of images with respect to measuring an image's features and structures. Now in a newly updated and significantly expanded fifth edition, "The Image Processing Handbook" by academician John C. Russ (Materials Science and Engineering Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina) "The Image Processing Handbook" features an informative chapter explaining which visual cues elicit a response from the viewer; descriptions of the latest hardware and software for image acquisition and printing including digital cameras; multichannel images and an analysis of their principle components; the issues of deconvolution, extended dynamic range images, and image enlargement and interpolation, and so much more. Enhanced with more than 2000 illustrations, and with the availability of a companion CD-ROM, "The Image Processing Handbook" is a seminal and essential addition to professional and academic library Computer Science and Electrical Engineering reference collections.
New 5th edition continues its tradition as a valuable tool.......2007-03-10
John Russ' book on image processing was never intended to be a textbook on how to understand and write your own image processing algorithms, as you might believe by looking through the table of contents. It does cover just about everything you would see in such a textbook, but from a user's standpoint of these operations, not as an author of image processing code who needs to understand the algorithms behind these operations. Instead, Russ explains all of the operations, their value in various applications, and provides many illustrations showing before and after pictures of what each operation does. There are no algorithms, pseudocode, or mathematics in this book.
The jewel in the crown of this book is the companion CD. It contains over 200 Photoshop plug-ins for performing the operations mentioned in this book. These plug-ins work on 8-bit grayscale and 24 bit RGB images and are divided into the categories of image adjustment, color manipulation, image math, boolean operations, Fourier processing, morphological operations, neighborhood processing, distance-map operations, thresholding, feature measurement, calibration, stereology, and surface rendering. The bad news is that you have to obtain the CD separately. If you need to understand the detailed mathematics behind such operations, you might consult Digital Image Processing by Gonzalez and Woods, and then come back to this book for the tools to accomplish the operations explained in that book. The updates to this fifth edition include an additional chapter on human vision and how it ties into image processing. Also, the author has updated his sections on image acquisition hardware and software to describe the latest tools available. Finally, the topic of tomographic imaging has been expanded and given its own chapter and the chapter on 3-D image acquisition has been deleted.
This is an excellent book on image processing from a systems engineering and user standpoint. You will be disappointed if you expect to learn the algorithms behind the techniques demonstrated in this book.
Suitable as Text or Reference.......2007-03-08
This, the fifth edition of this industry standard reference book on image processing has been significantly expanded. There are some 600 new and revised images. A major feature of the new edition is to describe the new advances that have come about in hardware for image capture and printing. This includes both new versions of traditional equipment and new emerging technologies. The text has been expanded in areas like deconvolution, extended-dynamic-range images and multichannel imaging including principal-components analysis.
In general this book does not cover the background mathematics that enables image processing. Those are left to specialty books on the subject. Instead this book is intended to be used in conjunction with hands-on equipment where the reader is encouraged to experiment with different methods to determine what is needed for the particular job.
While suitable for use as a text, this book is really a handbook for technical users. The book is more oriented to what the various tools availavle to help actually do.
Nearly perfect.......2006-07-28
As others have stated, this book comes as close as you'll ever get to a single-source reference on image processing. But if I were ever going to shoot anything down in it, I'd say that a little more mathematical background on some topics (and maybe pseudocoded examples) would help. For example, in the satellite geometric correction section, only a very high level view is given yet this is a challenging topic that could use more depth. Geometric transformations in general could use more depth, e.g. camera calibrations or image warping/morphing/mapping to other projections for example. Another example would be the need for a little more depth on how to make slow algorithms fast ...like convolution multiplications for example. Sure, you could write out the multiplies and spot commonalities, then re-use results that appear in more than one subsequent equation and what not, but some exploration of matrix math and how to make it efficient would be nice. But again ...I'm picking at small things here, and if John's book covered everything that I'd like it to, then it would become 2 books, not one ...hey! Now THERE's an idea! A 2+ book set by John Russ that covers a broader range of topics and does so in greater depth! That's something that I'd pay for (and much better to read than Ballard & Brown)
