    5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read!.......2000-12-26

If you're a piper, Irish, Scottish, or just love the Celtic culture, "The Book of the Bagpipe" is a great book to own! It's full of information about the history of the great Highland bagpipes, bagpipe music, and bagpipers. This book also contains information on other types of bagpipes, but keeps the Highland bagpipe as it's main focus. The pictures and illustrations in "The Book of the Bagpipe" are excellent, a great portrayal of Celtic culture. The bibliography can be found at the back of the book, and the resources are absolutely amazing. Overall, "The Book of the Bagpipe" is full of great poetry and pictures and is put together by Hugh Cheape in such a delightful manner that I rate it as one fantastic read!

This pretty, little gem of a book is a great gift for the piper or Scot-o-file in your family, especially if that person is you. Cheape delivers a basic FAQ on pipes and piping, but it's the lavish illustrations that make the book special. Cheape gives ample space to pipes from other parts of the world besides the British Isles. If you ever visit Glasgow, Scotland, visit the museum at the Piping Centre. Cheape designed and installed this museum.

    5 out of 5 stars SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-22

I LOVED this book! It is so realistic and exciting! In this book, Nancy Goes to Scotland after she finds a small bomb in her mailbox, and a few minutes later someone crashes into her parked car on purpose. She hears of a person named Mr. Dewar, and finds a note in the drawer of her room, but it is in symbols, and she can't read it. She has many adventures there, and it tells alot about Scotland, she even gets to go in an old castle. It is VERY good. BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars A Ridiculously Written Piece Of Garbage.......2003-10-11

Nancy, Bess, George and Mr. Drew go to Scotland so that Nancy can find a valuable heirloom that was to be given to her by her great-grandmother, but is now missing. Also, Nancy investigates a gang that is stealing sheep. This is one of the dumbest written books in this series. To start with, Bess submits a photo of Nancy, with a magnifying glass looking at some footprints, to a photography magazine contest and wins first prize. Please! Out of all of the entries that would be received for this type of contest a picture of Nancy wins first prize. You've got to be joking. Second, the winning photo gets published in the magazine and for the rest of the book, people, not only in the River Heights, but in Scotland as well, are recognizing Nancy from the photo. Come on! This is a photography magazine. Only people seriously interested in photography would be seeing this picture, not the whole world. Also, the heirloom that Nancy was supposed to receive was her great-grandmother's most prized possession, if that's the case why wouldn't the great-grandmother give it to someone to whom she is closer, instead of Nancy whom she's never met. It makes no sense. If Nancy has been able to fly off everwhere else, why hasn't she been able to see her great-grandmother before this. The mystery is just boring and unsuspenceful and comes complete with the usual "exciting" warning received by the end of the second chapter. Anyone with half a brain could have written this piece of trash. It's a waste of time.

    5 out of 5 stars Nancy's car.......2003-02-25

I happen to be reading this book right now, I am only into it about twenty pages, but it is already exciting! Nancy's car has been wrecked, she's got her mystery, and someone stole some money from and innocent little boy! Nancy's friends are already involved and soon they are going to leave on a trip to scotland! This is making me more excited, I am going to read it right now!

This is a great mystery book , but it is not the best writen. The main characters are Nancy Drew, because this is a Nancy Drew book, and her two friends Bess and George. They are going to take a trip to Scotland becaure Nancys Great Grandmother has lost the heirloom she was going to give to Nancy, but Nancy thinks it may have been stolen. Odly anough she starts to get warnings not to go. An example is a note anonamisly sent saying she will regret going to Sotland. She and her brave friends decide to go on with the trip. They love the scenery there, but there are some realy odd things there, and odd people. One guy tries to run them off the road. Somewon ells tries to push George off of a cliff. What was at first a trip to relaxs and to have fun had turned into a trip for solveing a mystery. Nancy ,Bess and George figure out who has caused these things to happen and who took the heirloom. You will never guess who it is!! If you are looking for a quick exciting adventure you will love this book, but if you want something that is realy well writen, the kind you won,t forget , then go look for another book!

5 out of 5 stars Nancy sleuths in the highlands of Scotland........2002-06-03

Nancy finds mystery in every thing she does. That's only one of the draws that kept children as well as adults reading the tales of our heroine well into the millennium. Author Mildred Wirst Benson died at the age of 96 this past week. She leaves behind a legacy of mysteries and a strong female character for the changing times.

Nancy flies into Scotland on family business with her dad and friends, Bess and George. She is in search of a Morgan family heirloom that is missing. There is plenty of excitement, danger, and lots of mystery as she hunts for more than just an heirloom.

Nancy exudes strength of character and an independency that rang out long before it was politically correct. This author was a woman with ideas that reached far beyond her time. She leaves behind a series that will live on long into the future. Kelsana 6/2/02

The music booklet was stapled upside down, and it was not possible to viiew two-page songs without taking the whole booklet apart. I feel that I paid too much for what I received. My son found the music helpful, but we had to put each song in a binder in order to use it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great sequel!.......2007-06-20

For those of you who have read and enjoyed "Mystery of the Waterloo Bagpipes," be advised that the saga continues with the recently published sequel "The Secret of Lightning Ridge." This new novel, set two years later admidst a treasure hunt, re-introduces the original characters and brings the story to an exciting and unexpectedly gruesome conclusion. A "must read" for those who enjoyed the original tale. Also, consider for your summer reading "Calvin Hemingway's Diary - A Novel" by the same author. It's a story about a young thirteen year old boy who is torn between being an author like his famous namesake or a small-town funeral home embalmer like his father. "Hysterical. Like reading Holden Caulfield on a sugar-high."The Secret of Lightning Ridge Calvin Hemingway's Diary: A Novel

5 out of 5 stars Small town setting like "Stand By Me".......2003-05-18

Just finished reading this book. Really enjoyed it. Brought back warm, personal memories of good friends and growing up in a small, rural town back in the fifties. I had a dog just like MacKenzie. Reminded me of the movie "Stand By Me." Loved the stuff about bagpipes. Very interesting. Would definitely recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Would make a great movie!.......2001-11-27

My daughter is thirteen years old. For the past two days she's been talking about this book she just read. To see what all the excitement was about I picked it up and began reading. I'm glad I did. It's been a long time since I read a "young adult" book, but this "Mystery of the Waterloo Bagpipes" really kept me interested all the way through to the exciting end. I really liked the story line about the old pipes, and being a history buff, was fascinated with the description of the events surrounding the battle at Waterloo. The small town, set in late summer, gave the story a warm, cozy feeling as did the friendship between the kids. Having a daughter, I was very glad to see the character "Spike" interact so well with her friends and ultimately take a stand and demonstrate her bravery, along with the boys, during the final confrontation with the evil Simon Gein. And the dog MacKenzie. . .I loved her! She gives new meaning to the word "spunk". This is really a great read for kids as well as adults. A wonderful ending. It has the word "movie" written all over it.

5 out of 5 stars Back to great family values.......2001-08-18

This book could have been written in the 50's - it is so filled with great family values. The children are truly engaging and the relationship they have with their parents is exemplary, and the friendship they have with each other leaves one longing for the days before school-age violence. Don's descriptive writing allows one to see the environs quite beautifully, and I found myself wanting to purchase a home on their street, where I could be one of the neighbors, and enjoy the fair with them. I laughed and I cried with this book - the mystery itself was a great "yarn," as it ends with the "good guys" winning. Thanks. Don for the great read - get back to that desk now, and give us a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Great summer reading.......2001-08-12

As the great heat of summer continues to drag on I was looking for something to read that would allow me to just sit back and be entertained and not have to concern myself with whiny social issues or involved character sketches. "Mystery of the Waterloo Bagpipes" is just what the doctor ordrerd. A straight forward, no-nonsense tale that promises nothing more than entertainment. And that it does on one big scale. I really enjoyed it. The characters were great (I could see a lot of myself as a kid in Norman) and the dog MacKenzie was one tough little beagle. I liked the bagpiping stuff (who doesn't at least find them interesting?) and the historical military aspects were fascinating. A question that is still sticking in my mind after reading this great little story is, "Where are the MacKay pipes now? Do they actually exist somewhere?" The author doesn't say (maybe an addendum would have been a nice addition.) Be that as it may, the story does not suffer from lack of information, interest or excitement. If you're looking for some great summer reading that does what it sets out to do (i.e. entertain), this is the book. Once it gets rolling, it's difficult to put down. Take my word, you will not be disappointed.

Each page inspired enthusiastic conversation with my nephew, who has listened to the story so many times that he can almost read it himself. He loves to shout out the big bold sounds on the pages, like ""Poof!" and "Woosh!" and the bagpipe's "Blahruuuuuuuuuuuh!" I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next Power Families adventure!

          Book Description

This work explores the development of English sport during the eight centuries preceding the industrial era. Focusing on outdoor activities that involved intergroup competition among adults, Thomas Henricks demonstrates that sport was a sophisticated and "rational" experience, connected to society in many subtle yet important ways. Accessible to readers in many disciplines and on many levels, the book charts the changes in sport preceding the modern era, serves as an introduction to the historical literature on English sport, traces the relationship between sport and shifting social patterns, and develops an original thesis of sport as an identity ceremony for its participants. The work begins with a detailed introduction to English sport and the historians, and continues with Henrick's thesis of sporting events as identity ceremonies. The next of five chapters trace the development of sport and society through five periods of English history: the feudal society of the early Middle Ages; the decay of feudalism and the later Middle Ages; the centralized administration and middle-class appeal of the Tudor era; the elitist nostalgia and French influence of the Stuart era, followed by the Puritan Revolution; and the celebration of private property and mixture of snobbery and social mingling of Georgian England. Each chapter is organized in a similar manner, beginning with a brief introduction to the social life of the times, followed by presentations of patterns within individual sports and a summary of dominant themes in sport during that era. A concluding chapter considers some sociological aspects of sport and society. Disputed Pleasures will be an important resource for courses in English social history, sociology, and the history of sport, as well as a significant addition to public and academic libraries.

Most people know the work of theater director Julie Taymor, if they know it at all, from her hit adaptation of Walt Disney's The Lion King for the Broadway stage. But this gorgeous book, a pictorial history of the artist's career, demonstrates that for the past 25 years Taymor has been creating original works of theater that combine a stunning visual sense with an extensive knowledge of the performance styles of many countries outside the West. Theater critic and scholar Eileen Blumenthal has followed the work of Taymor almost since its very beginnings, and her lengthy critical assessment of this inspired artist's work combines interviews with the director with a cogent analysis of her intellectual development and cultural sources.

From her days as a teenager studying the people and theater of Bali to her travels in Japan, Europe, and then back to New York, Taymor has reveled in the cross-fertilization of different images and ideas from a wide variety of countries. Her critically lauded piece The Transposed Heads, for example, was adapted from a Thomas Mann novella that was itself based on an ancient Indian folktale. Unlike most directors, Taymor came from the world of the designer, and it was her exquisite work creating costumes, masks, and puppets that first launched her into work in the theater. But gradually she gained the respect of actors as well, and now is regarded as a director of uncommon sensitivity, who can pull performances from a cast that match in intensity her phenomenal visual eye.

Lavishly illustrated with color and black and white photographs, this is a fitting tribute to a woman who, still in her 40s, is nothing short of a theatrical prodigy. As Taymor moves further into the world of commercial theater and film (her upcoming cinematic production of Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange and adapted from her own stage production of Titus Andronicus, opens soon), more audiences than ever will be treated to her extraordinary work. --John Longenbaugh

          5 out of 5 stars A Rare Book for a Rare Artist.......2001-10-27

I bought this book after looking at a friend's copy, and I can say that this was one of the finest investments in my Theatre Arts library that I have ever made. This book is filled with brilliant pictures and vivid writing that will keep many in awe and almost child-like wonder at the genious of Ms. Taymore. This isn't just a book for those that appreciate theatre - I suggest it for anyone who is interested in puppetry or film, not to mention anyone who can appreciate art in general.

5 out of 5 stars Playing With Fire proves Julie Taymor's extreme brilliance!.......2000-04-27

I have been in love with theatre for a long time. Many musicals I see and enjoy, buy the CD and just listen to that. Others blow me away. Those that have that capacity I tend to investigate and become obsessed with. The Lion King was one of them. I soon became fascinated and extremely appreciative of Julie Taymor's work and pure brilliance in musical theatre, opera, and film. This book highlights every show that Julie has been involved with for her 20 years in the performing arts business. This wonderful book illustrates what true theatre is! Julie is too amazing for any human language too describe; even emotion can't portray my love and idolism for this excruciatingly wonderful woman! Anybody who loves theatre, whether it is film, opera, musical or non-musical, you will be able to love and appreciate this book for all eternity.

I love this book so much that I would dare to give it infinite stars. Now imagine this, if there were such a number, I'd give the music from these shows infinitely infinite stars!

Now, more to the book. It starts out with a quick overview of her work. Then we get into the real meat. There are pictures (both of the show and backstage!) from each and every single of her shows. Included are some original sketches of costumes, masks, and puppets. Along with the pictures are writings by both Julie Taymor and Eileen Blumenthal. This is an extravagant work of art in itself that all should have their eyes glued onto...buy it now! Also buy everything you can find that relates to Ms. Taymor. You will be fascinated! The only regret I now have is that I didn't live in Europe and Asia to see her other fascinating shows...

Hail Taymor! I will look forward to all of your work in the future!

Lastly, if anyone finds the film Fool's Fire (by Taymor), PLEASE! E-mail me at Cepheus9@aol.com...I want to buy it SO badly!

A facinating insight into the mind of one of the great contempary designers. A must have for all theatrically minded people. The book takes you through the creative process to achieving such powerful and passionfilled productions such as The Lion King. Disney would have flopped without Julie Taymor.

To a mainstream theater world startled by the design and staging brilliance of The Lion King, Julie Taymor seems to have landed like a meteor. But as this handsome coffee-table volume attests, she's been a master of masks and puppets for 20 years, spending most of that time creating idiosyncratic visions in fringe theaters. But all of the elements have been brewing: the mythic puppets in Way of Snow, grotesque masks in The King's Stag, and the human/animal connection in Juan Darien are all evidence of Taymor's talent. Consider Playing with Fire to be her playbook for future endeavors.

5 out of 5 stars The AMAZING Taymor!.......1999-12-03

I had always understood poetry to be an experience involving words, but even experiencing the frozen images of Julie Taybor's work was an indescribably moving experience. I could absolutely understand by the images how much more ALIVE her creations would be when manipulated on the stage. Being exposed to the work of Julie Taymor has been one of the most important experiences of my year.

I've just finished 'The Lion King, on Broadway' book. That's just whet my appetite to go out and 'put on a show'. This book was my next step and boy, I wasn't disappointed! 'Playing with Fire' is a truly splendid book, chronicalling the vocational, personal and thoroughly creative life of Ms.Taymor. The photos are dramatic as well as detailed and along with her conceptual costume sketches, the book is perfect for reference, inspiration and motivation for all you wannabe designers out there. I really admire this woman, what she has done with her life, the belief in herself and of how she surpasses herself with each new project. This book is a must for anyone who needs that extra motivational push once in a while when they are struggling as a designer, actor, or any vocation that involves loving what you do.

A big book overflowing with big ideas as conceived and breathed life into by America's most unique theatre artist. This is a volume to read, to reread, to spark your imagination and to put on your coffee table to look at the cool pictures. The only thing more you could wish for is if Julie herself could make a home visit when you bought the book

Thanks, Mr. Perry, for giving me the tools to learn enough about Windows to stay one step ahead of my two little ones!

Your writing is always friendly and speaks to me. I first bought your rent house book (ISBN: 0761525319) because I needed help with rent house nightmares and you solved them... you can solve computer problems also! You're well-rounded!!!!! Thanks again.

Unlike most of the Dummies books, I've always been partial to these 24 hours books by Sams Publishing.

This one continues to set the standard as a marvel in simplicity while still teaching us what we need to know.

I had not expected to like this because I already know a lot about Windows but I try to complete my Windows book collection.

                  I learned a lot!

One of the most insightful chapters is the one on installing and removing software. How many times have we been told to "run Setup.exe" and it just doesn't work out?? What's going on? What if a program (or driver) doesn't have a setup.exe file? Arrrgh!

Well, Perry (the author) goes into great detail but keeps his typical layman's wording (and humor) and explains it all to me.

I appreciate this book very much. I have not yet been disappointed with a 24 Hours book, although sure some are better than others. This one is an example of the cream of the crop.

4 out of 5 stars WIN XP Review.......2003-12-09

Book Review ? Sam?s teach yourself - Win XP ? Computer Basics ?
Srinivasan Prasanna (North West Ohio .NET User?s Group)

I found this book useful while sitting in front of my computer than off my computer. The author?s included in each chapter a summary, which was crisp and highlighted all the important points from the chapter. I really like this feature in the book. Mr. Perry by profession is a computer instructor and his writing style enhances that fact. He writes as if you are in the same room with him. I suggest keeping some paper nearby to jot down the summaries and your notes - I had about 29 'Post-it' notes plastered all over my monitor by the end of chapter - GIVING WINDOWS A TUNE-UP.

The book is fairly comprehensive. Mr. Perry covers both Home and Professional editions, but definitely is geared more toward the Home edition user. The first 10 chapters cover the basic look and feel of Microsoft's latest operating system. Subjects include Windows Explorer, the Help and Support Center (HSC), active desktop synchronization (active desktop is turned off by default), and installing new programs. The next 10 chapters delve into the various bundled programs. The latest Internet Explorer 6.0 and MSN Messenger come installed by default.

Mr. Perry's book also includes information about the built in firewall and how to network other computers, even those not running Windows XP. I found this information extremely useful after the So Big WORM virus I got infected this fall.
A significant number of households now contain two or more computers and the ability to share files, peripherals, and modem connections easily is a big perk, if not necessary. Good information on the hardware and computer communication peripherals was found in this book. Mr. Perry also covers the email program Outlook Express, another Microsoft program bundled in XP. He also talks about MSN messenger and its advantages - although I hate the Instant Messenger's personally. I did not pay too much attention into this part of the book because of my lack of interest.

I learned quite a bit on Dr.Watson - which is really cool. This program is included with Windows XP, as Mr. Perry points out, but cannot be found under the start menu.
Clicking on Run and entering Drwtsn32.exe into the dialog prompt and clicking OK can easily activate it. Dr. Watson basically helps experts and tech support personnel diagnose severe system or application errors. It keeps a log of computer memory and other settings up to the time when the errors occur. For the majority of users, Dr. Watson will never have to be summoned, but it's nice to know how it works nonetheless. The book dedicates an entire chapter to 'Tinkering With the Advance System Tools', of which Dr. Watson is one.

In the last four chapters of the book, Mr. Perry looks at the fun stuff of XP. No, not FreeCell and Solitaire. I'm referring to Windows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker. By following the steps in the book, you can learn how to manipulate images and video clips with music and sound files into a movie that can be saved on a CD or attached to an email. The last chapter is dedicated to Advance Windows XP tips, like creating a startup disk and Internet Explorer and Outlook Express shortcuts.

My personal favorite in this book is the summary for chapter 3 - HEALTH CARE FOR PCS. The topics dealing with archiving your files, de fragmenting the Hard Drive, Cleaning the disk, protecting the machine against computer viruses. I learned about using System Restore and Disk and Drive Dilemmas and found it useful too. Chapter 13 - ?Exploring Your Hardware Interface?, which dealt with exploring the Hardware Interfaces was an interesting chapter. Because not many books talk with this much detail into the hardware and I liked this.

Overall this book is very well written and if used as suggested, will teach beginning XP users most of the knowledge they need to perform a variety of tasks and tools to use if something goes wrong. If you recently upgraded to XP from 98 or ME, you probably should consider buying this book. If you recently purchased a new computer with XP already installed, this book should be required reading.
