Let the BUYER BEWARE!!!.......2006-10-28
While Dover's many scores represent an amazing value across the musical repertoire, their collection and reprint of the Litolff Edition of the Beethoven Symphonies was a mistake. For the casual buyer they are workable, but not for serious use in performance, as they are riddled with editorial mistakes and problems. Purchaser would be better advised to find a set of the miniature (octavo-sized) Bärenreiter critical scores. They are bound just as nicely and the paper is of excellent quality. I use the full-size Bärenreiter set when I conduct my orchestra.

I appreciate the Dover edition of these works because the large format makes for easier reading and provides room for making notes while you are studying. For example, you might want to make something special or unique to one recording so that when you listen to another you can compare the two.
And if you don't read music very well, these symphonies are a good place to start. You can listen to the music and what the shapes go by. And eventually you will get used to the link between the sound and what you see. These scores are not as dense as, say Mahler or Strauss or works with huge orchestras. So, the classics make a great way to get into the pool, so to speak. Honestly, even if you can't read the notes, you will notice things after a few listenings that you had not heard before because you see the `shape' in the score.
The Dover editions are also very durable and will last for many years of use. These editions are nice and clear and easy on the eyes because the contrast between the dark ink and light paper is very good, but not blinding.
Recommended. Expand your horizons!
Worth Having.......2001-12-29
These scores (as well as those of the other symphonies) are worth having. Serious students of music can take invaluable lessons from Beethoven's knowledge of counterpoint, orchestration, dynamics, melody, harmony, and form. Additionally these are great listening aids, pointing out "Nebenstimmen" ("secondary voices") that might not be noticed at first listen. This way one can learn to enjoy Beethoven (and other music) as many melodies intertwining into a larger fabric.

This edition of the first four symphonies followed me through my conservatory training, including some extremely frightening conducting lessons in front of a bored orchestra. There are no errors in the score that I have ever found, and the music is clear and easy to read. The best edition of a necessary score for any orchestral musician.

Among the things I look for in a score is the readability of the music itself. The larger the better, though smaller print is acceptable in most classical and earlier pieces and a few Romantic pieces. Not so in Mahler's gigantic symphonies. I feel that the score should be the full size of some of scores of his later symphonies (Dover). There were times where I had to squint or look twice to see the score properly.
That is my only problem with the score. These are two wonderful works and, unlike other composers, Mahler isn't beginning but nearing the peak of his symphonic powers with these "early" works.
This is score is wonderful for music lovers and students alike for it's accessibility and low price.
Mahler at his best!.......2000-04-04
The early symphonies of Gustav Mahler show the heavy influence of the works of Richard Wagner. The pastorale first movement of the Symphony No.1 in D Major, the Titan, is particularly noteworthy in the way Mahler paints with music. The movement slowly builds to a thunderous climax when the brass enter with resplendent glory. This is followed by two movements that are reminiscient of folk melodies--including the inverted, minor-mode theme from Frère Jacques. It is concluded with a thunderous finale. The second symphony in c minor continues a powerful motif that now adds the power of the human voice. The thunderous finale of this symphony brings together a massive orchestra with chorus. Imagine 10 French horns, 8 trumpets, 4 trombones and a tuba proclaiming a glorius finish. Definitely a wonderful buy!

Great for Young Musicians to Study From!.......2003-07-17
Hi,
I heard the San Francisco Symphony preform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Opus 17, Little Russian, recently and instantly fell in love with it.Though the shortest of Tchaikovsky's symphonies this is not a " Little Russian" symphony as distinct from a big one. The nickname refers to Little Russsia, an affectionate name for Ukraine. Anyways, after hearing it, I had a great interest to see the music to see how it was like and just to study it, so I bought at Amazon. com. It is really great: it has large unabridged,full score, Dover republication of the first three symphonies of Tchaikovsky.It's measures 9 3/8 x 12 1/4 which makes it really quite easy to read. I suggest that anyone serious in studying music should buy this because it's a great book to learn from!Nice cover artwork ,too! = )

For a Dover score, this is standard. You get what you pay for--it's a reprint, which means the quality is only as good as the original was. For a student like me, it works very well as a study score. If you want to be picky, it is a pain to have to remember which line is which instrument (and what key the instruments are in, e.g. Trumpet in F in #1) since the instruments are only given on the first page of each movement (with a few exceptions throughout the score).

I read this book from cover to cover today at work and being an "Andy of Mayberry" fan (and I love to cook, too), I found it delightful and typed 4 of the 'choicest' recipes. I'd love to own it and to give it to some special friends for Christmas, too.

I bought the book thinking it was just a little "Andy Griffith" nostalgia, but was pleasantly surprised when the recipes were actually great! As a mother of 6, my family welcomed some new ideas for dinner (I welcomed that they were simple to make)! Also get "Aunt Bea's Delightful Desserts."
The Good Old Days!.......2000-04-22
I took a walk down memory lane with Aunt Bee, Andy and Barney along with many other cast members! The wonderfully basic old-fashioned recipes brought back memories of simple times. The book is packed with black/white and color photos along with lots of dialog from the show which made me laugh and caused me to remember the episodes that I thought were long forgotten. The book has a table of contents each for Episodes and Recipes which made it easy to find whatever I was looking for. I am pleased that the recipes are simple and easy. Many of the recipes are created with basic ingredients that allowed me to use what I already had on hand in the pantry without running to the store to get a special ingredient and the results were scrumptious!

Wrong title.......2005-09-26
I was looking for CCNA 1 & 2 Companion Guide Revised Third Edition, from that page I clicked on 'used & new' link and oredered what I thought was the same product. It wasn't til it arrived that I received a used version of the previous year's non-revised which is quite a bit different than what I thought I was buying.

True there are some errors, however, if you are in the class and use this book, the errors are not that profound and shouldn't cause you any confusion. If you are confused because a word is misspelled or there are 4 technical errors throughout the book...you should not be going into the technology field...try a different career path.

I'm not sure about the other reviewers here but I found this book very, very useful.
I'm taking the online-acadamy and found the book supported the 3.0 curriculum very nicely. The hardcover book would go into greater depth and would aid in understanding. Reading online and following up by reading each chapter in the book really drove the concepts.
I have heard horror stories about previous books and curriculum but I think this 3rd edition has addressed those...
I gave 4 stars as the book does have some typos...I have read this book, cover to cover, and found maybe 5 (significant) errors - - most of which simply challenged my thinking and/or forced further reference; enhancing the experience.
This book will serve you well as a Companion Guide to the CCNA 1 and 2 Online Curriculum.
this is a horrible book.......2004-05-17
i recently purchased this book for a class and before i even read the reviews i found quite a few errors. from spelling, to typos and repeating the same lines twice in a row. i don't think anyone reviewed this book before it went to print. i am so disappointed and confused slightly. The cd that comes with it is even worse. it gives conflicting answers and the design is poor. avoid this book if you can. i am losing faith in cisco.

Perhaps one should contact Cisco and see if they are upgrading the book to 3.1 to match the online Academy. I don't actually have book.. it can't hurt to have it but it does seem you can get by without it if you study dilegently the online material

This lab companion taught me the basics of what is required for the other 3 classes of the CCNA certification. Things such as building a basic Peer-to-peer network, building a basic lan/wan, and also subnetting of class A-C networks. Great book!
