5 out of 5 stars Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off, and Keep Moving Forward!.......2007-01-04

Was a tad surprised about the pot smoking incidents, but it took some hutsvah (spelling?) to put it down in the book. With that said, this is great reading from 1987. Obviously, Barry did NOT kill off any brain cells with the pot, or, if he did, he certainly had many extra ones to play with. I bought this book because I wanted to know more about my absolutely FAVORITE singer. It was hard to put it down at night but I HAD to sleep. Lemme start by saying that I do not generally care to read bios, but this was written by the big Mr. Barry himself, so it's not somebody making up stuff just to sell a book. The ONLY bios I have read have been that of Barry and of Chuck Norris. (I was impressed by Chuck and the values he attempted to portray on Walker, Texas Ranger.)

As is consistent with Barry, he begins the book thanking everyone who helped him for their brutal honesty (obviously in helping him remember details) and helping him in any way with this book-writing venture, which took him over 3 years. He states, "...I want to tell you the story of an average guy on the way to the rest of his life...". (and that about says it.)

The book is very well written, and is done in such a way that it makes you feel that you are sitting across the kitchen table chatting with him over a couple of pots of coffee. It's interesting, witty, simple, and if it's not brutally honest, then he's got me fooled. I found it far more interesting than I had anticipated. Like I said, hard to put down.

It begins with his simple childhood in Brooklyn and discusses his background, family, his failed marriage, beginnings of his career, girlfriends, struggles of the career, challenges, his work at the NYC Bathhouse, alone and with Bette Midler, and so on. He never planned to be a singer, but it sure must have been in the stars. Some of the past must have been painful to write about, but writing about it was probably a type of therapy in itself.

This is a story of determination and perseverence, of getting knocked down and getting back up and going on. It's about putting fears and insecurities aside and having the guts to go forward and keep going. It's about doing a little bullcrapping, too. It's also about having an "I CAN" attitude, which I greatly admire in anyone, along with perseverance. Barry enjoyed the music world and he threw himself into it and got more than he ever expected. This bio is an average man's climb from a poor kid to a superstar, but then, is Barry REALLY average? I think not. "Average" people give up. Average/normal is overrated.

I'm ready for the sequel anytime, Barry! This was FANTASTIC and well worth reading. I LOVED it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainer, Superb Musician.......2006-01-25

Wow, I cannot believe it's been 8 years since I read this great book and reviewed it online @ Amazon. I have since read and re-read this book so many times, I've practically memorised the words - but they remain as touching and inspiring as ever. I laugh and cry each time I read it. My respect for him as an entertainer and a person grows each time I read the book.

Barry's words have helped me in my affirmation of my own self worth during the low times and in celebration of the highs - just as all his songs have done all these years. Here's one true blue fan who is looking forward to the next autobiographical update from the man himself.

It's a wonder my book is still in mint condition!!! but I am determined to treasure this book for always. :-)

5 out of 5 stars What a pleasure!.......2004-06-16

Mr. Manilow is a great inspiration.
I loved this book.
It's sincere, funny, interesting and sad all at the same time.
Not only does this man write beautiful music, he sure knows how to write a book too!
If your a fan I would say it's a MUST read.

5 out of 5 stars Barry speaks his mind and i agree with him.......2004-04-28

in this book, which i finally NOW have, i was expecting to read a dark and gloomy rise to fame but there wasn't any. Manilow's fame came by accident and the pressures of the business and the reluctance to accept the fame, in the beginning, is a refreshing story. Barry talks about his early musical career in the '60s before being pushed into the spotlight by Clive Davis. all facets of Barry's career is talked about in here. there's a chapter called "Read 'Em and Weep", which was the title of his huge AC #1 hit in 1984. The story part of the book ends during the "Paradise Café" album in 1984 but the discography in the back includes his 1985 and 1986 material. the pictures contained in this book are rare...you see Barry with black hair, combed to the side, during his days with CBS prior to hooking up with Bette Middler. there's also a picture of Barry on a beach with no shirt on...there's another one where he has a small beard! if anything, this book helps paint the picture of Barry Manilow. It allows people who really never followed his career in-depth to know how the off-stage "barry" was always at odds with the on-stage "BARRY" throughout much of his biggest years. There's also chapters that talk about the commercial aspect of music and the heart-felt aspect of music and why Manilow's songs were poignant yet had a commercial "sound" to them. This is a complex story of a man living the life of a super-star. Being a writer, Barry was also stunned whenever a song he never co-wrote would become a hit for him. "I Write the Songs" wasn't written by Barry...but neither was a few other big songs like "Mandy", "Looks Like We Made It", or "Read 'Em and Weep"...Barry said that it took years before he could accept their success. Barry has changed a lot of his personal opinions since the mid '80s. Nowadays whenever he does a CD he's performing "outside songs", as he calls them, even more than his own material, which wouldn't have happened in his past. above all else, this book shows that "Barry Manilow" is a human and has feelings, too. no artist should ever have to go through what he went through; and all he ever wanted was to spread joy and happiness through his music and even today he's still causing happiness with his style of pop music.

1 out of 5 stars Sweet Life.......2003-06-16

I enjoyed reading every page of Barry's Sweet Life book and all the pictures inside the book, are very good.
Until I started reading Barry's book for the very first time, I never knew about his pot smoking days(Bad Barry!). :-O
Otherwise, it's a very interesting book to read!

1 out of 5 stars This Book is Trash.......2006-02-23

This book was a comlete an utter waste of time and money. I threw it away rather than resell to an unsuspecting buyer. Totally based on gossip, rumors, and disgruntled acquaintances of Mr. Manilow. It is an unathorized biography and Ms. Butler has never spoken to Barry Manilow. How do you write someone's life story without accurate sources? She also trashed Jim Morrison and had some sort of scandal about a scholorship fund or charity she promised the profits from that book to. I don't believe a word she writes about anyone or anything. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars After reading everyone's review..........2006-01-23

Okay, so I've not bought the book...yet. But after reading the reviews of this book, one thing is very clear. People either love Manilow or they hate him...just like his critics. Not sure whether I should buy this book and give it a read to form my own opinion, or save my money. I'm still "on the fence" there.

That being said, I will admit that I'm a fan of Barry Manilow. Not a drooling, rabid fan - mind you - just a normal average fan. I enjoy his concerts and all the different styles of music he has offered to the public. If we were all fellow musicians of his caliber, I'm sure we'd all enjoy working with him on some creative project. Unfortunately, though, being an artist brings with it certain personality traits that people find unappealing. Such as perfectionism, arrogance, narcissism and sometimes - sexual preferences different from our own. Every Hollywood personality has these traits. The bottom line about this man is that he is an incredibly talented musician and his personal life is none of our business. Let's all just enjoy what he has to offer and call it even.

Now everyone go and have a nice day.

4 out of 5 stars What is the deal.......2005-12-31

I cannot believe people are so upset over this topic. They talk about Barry as if they know him. All they know about him is through his music. Barry, I imagine, is a human being just like anyone with trial, troubles and family issues and making it through the world just like everyone else. None of this makes him a bad person. He is just human. PERIOD! As for his sexuality, I didn't think it was such a secret. Recently he introduced Elton John "As the man I want to marry". I am sure he was joking but anyway. Get a grip on reality ladies.

3 out of 5 stars Getting to the truth??.......2004-08-29

This book is written so poorly that I would not even know where to begin. All I have to say is, shame on the author, editor(s) and publisher! Yikes! A literary nightmare! It is really a shame, because I think the author started out doing some pretty good research........It wasn't in many ways completed, followed through with or organized very well. Too bad. As for the numerous comments in the other reviews, people need to wise up and wake up! Why are many complaining that there were no recent sources spoken with? Hello????? Maybe they would not have a job, friendship, etc... if they did. Ms. Butler obviously talked to sources that knew him, and that could actually DO some talking. One of my favorite comments in the "reviews" was the particular one stating that his relationship with his father or lack of one, you could say, was an issue when he was possibly growing up, but did not really matter later in his life.... WHAT??? Are they kidding? Psychology 101 would explain the significance of that relationship to a child or an adult.....please! I think that there is "proof-positive" results in the reviews placed on this piece of material that there are delusional fans on many levels. Many of the stories spoken in this book should be disturbing and at the very least, thought provoking to a "normal" fan/person??? I know exactly why the author chose to do some research on those message boards........you would not believe what you hear and see on those things??? Fans spend alot of what seems to be a bickering waste of time.
It is hard to believe some one as talented as he is could create such havoc. I respect his talent, but like many in the public eye, can't seem to deal with real life too often. He seems to have many issues that he has never dealt with...what a shame. The author at times seems to make him out to be very emotionally unstable. (Which would be explained, in part, by his turbulent family/personal life.) I in no way feel she was completely negative, I do think she was trying to be honest. If celebrities do not want books like this written about them, why don't they just fess up? Nothing anyone could say would take their talent away from them. Maybe someday Mr. Manilow will come out with his own version and then he will be able to do everyone a favor and stay truthful in art and in life.

A Barry fan does not have much reading material to choose from when it comes to reading about him. However, this offers a look at Barry from the start to 1985...pre-"Copacabana: The Movie." It has very few quotes from Barry & reads as if aimed to a young adult audience. Read it if you can't find anything else about Barry to enjoy! Better yet...put on "Even Now" and listen to what he feels through his music rather than relying on this for more about him!

                Book Description

The word 'music' in the early 21st century means many things. It means Mozart in the elevator, 50s pop songs on TV adverts, Finnish folk songs on Nokia 'phones. It means inflammatory Serbian nationalist song, ancient Coptic Church chant, Berlin electronica, Wynton Marsalis.

Given this bewildering abundance, how we can speak of a single thing called 'music'? This book will argue that we can. More than that, it will argue that a vast area of cultural practice is at risk of vanishing behind the deafening roar of all those dead simulations of music that fill the airwaves.

In this passionately argued and convincing book Ivan Hewett re-claims the unique place of music should have in our culture in its own right.

There are bookshelves full of screenwriting how-to books, but this rare volume tells you how to market and sell yours. It's an insider guide to Hollywood and off-Hollywood that will save you the pain of years of trial and error. Kouguell, an experienced screenwriter and script doctor, has drawn on her own experience, as well as the expertise of players from Miramax to Paramount, to show you how to polish your submission, write a killer query letter, hone your synopsis and pitch, pitch, pitch. Screenwriters: Read this book before you write another word!

                  5 out of 5 stars The Savvy Screenwriter: A Student's Review.......2000-11-01

I was fortunate enough to take one of Susan's screenwriting classes. Although I would've liked to handcuff her to my computer so as to solve all my screenwriting problems, I couldn't. Enter the SAVVY SCREENWRITER. Now Susan is constantly with me, to answer questions on everything to do with the screenwriting business. Some books focus on the screenplay alone, others on getting into the business. However, very few combine both in an efficient way, and share personal anecdotes. These are especially important if you are an industry virgin, and haven't a clue about what's going on. This book warns you about the perils of the business, and also tells you how to navigate its seas. The SAVVY SCREENWRITER is also an enjoyable read. It is witty, humorous and never sleep-inducing. I would recommend it highly for all screenwriters, whether amateurs or veterans. It is a versatile book that will appeal to both, and both will learn much from it.

                  Book Description

Assuming readers have a basic familiarity with C or C++, Frantisek Franek describes the techniques, methods and tools available to develop effective memory usage. The overwhelming majority of "bugs" and crashes in computer programming stem from problems of memory access, allocation, or deallocation. Such memory related errors are notoriously difficult to resolve. Moreover, the role that memory plays in C and C++ programming is a subject often overlooked in courses and in books. Most professional programmers learn about it entirely through actual experience of the problems it causes.

                  4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-04-13

First I would like to state the reason I gave it 4 stars. In my opinion, 5 stars should be very hard to reach. Maybe I would give this 4.5 stars if it was possible. Anyway, I'm a self taught VB 6 programmer with a working knowledge of the Windows API. First year CS student, though I've read many a book on C and a few on assembly. I have a large CS library and this is the first book of it's kind that I've found. It is a little pricey if you compare book size to other, larger CS books, but I don't think it is overpriced. The material is great, though I wouldn't say it is a beginner level book. I had trouble grasping enough of the material that it causes me to think either I've still got a long ways to go in learning (more so than I thought at least), or it is just not for the beginner.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about a programming career, regardless of the language. The book's relatively small size should not be a negative factor. It is not densely packed with information to the point where interpretation is needed, instead it explains in sufficient detail without dumbing it down by over-repetition and such used by some other CS books. It is aimed at C/C++ programmers, so being familiar with those is a prerequisite, obviously. Like another reviewer said, there seemed to be a little too much discussion on, say, serialization of linked data structures, an important topic with regards to memory yet I felt a little more emphasis could have been placed elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars more books need to be written like this.......2007-01-05

as a C programmer for 3 years now i'm still learning and as you go along you realize how much C is really about memory. This book only served to reinforce that. the examples were great and even the example code he has in there, the only reason i gave it four stars is because the book wasn't bigger. I loved this book and gladly recommend this to any C programmer, budding or veteran.

4 out of 5 stars Another book that will be helpful.......2006-10-02

An older book that could be helpful to readers interested in this book is "Inside the C++ Object Model" by Stanley B. Lippman. It was written in 1996. It shows things such as the layout of C++'s organization of (pointers to) virtual and inherited methods.

4 out of 5 stars This book should be made an optional reading for in undergraduate computer science student.......2006-08-18

I agree with the other reviewers. In general this is good book. It bridges the gaps between many computer science disciplines. Especially OS and programming language. It also touched a little bit on computer architecture and linking process. The text was written in a a very clear way. However, I do have two complains. The author didn't spend enough effort on the relatively more complex and advanced topics. Eg, linking process for C++, advanced topics in memory leakage detection and prevention. On the other hand, author spent too much energy describing linked data structure in terms of serialization. I personally don't think its relevance is higher than the advanced memory leakage issues. For seasoned profressionals, this book can be used to refresh your knowledge. It is a beginner level to intermediate level book.

5 out of 5 stars like someone said, i want to known more.......2005-07-27

It's always no hurt to read some fundermantal material written by a dumb-proof way by a professional. This book is one of kind.

The only regret is that I'd like the book size to be doubled. Maybe assembly language book will cover the material which is missing from this book.
