I've never been a "Anne of Green Gables" fan, but after reading Andronik's beautiful story of Anne's creator, I feel I should give them a second chance. Andronik really knows how to discribe a flaming spirit, even when it's locked behind bars!

My opinions regarding the Book od the Kindred.......2000-05-22

If you already have the sourcebooks for Vampire: The Masquerade or The Guide to the Camarilla, you may not want this book. It provides some information about each of the clans in the Camarilla (Pre Gangrel departure, vampric vernacular, explanations of some terms, the Traditions of the Camarilla as well as the Book of Nod. You may like to buy the book for the stories it contains or for allowing a beginner to read it and get a feel for the World of Darkness rather than throwing the game books at them. I believe that would be the most useful part of this book, for loaning to someone who has not played Vampire: The Masquerade before to learn about what they may have to expect in the games as well as observing current gaming sessions. The stories may give an insight to the new player of the adult horror and themes of Vampire.

The World Needs More Dr. Schoens.......2006-06-13

This book is a great primer for people who have an inkling that our relationship with animals runs deep and is often spiritual or even mystical.

Dr. Schoen has given us a one-stop shopping source, with introductions to: alternative medicine for animals, alternatives to commercial pet food, and ways to enrich the human-animal bond through touch, massage, and meditation.

Buy it as a gift for someone whose eyes are opening to the reality that we are all connected and responsible for each other.

For Animal Lovers.......2005-08-04

Allen M. Schoen, D.V.M., M.S., author of "Kindred Spirits" has written a sensitive book that pulled me in from the beginning. I have to confess that I am a person who feels more in touch with animals than than I do with most people. I have enjoyed reading this book so far and would recommend it to any adult who enjoys understanding the complex relationship between man and the animals around us. It is easy to read and full of wonderful anecdotes from the author's experience as a vet.

Dubious information, egotistical tone.......2004-07-08

Dr. Schoen never met a form of "alternative" therapy that he didn't like. I'm all in favor of keeping an open mind and exploring non-traditional forms of healing. On the other hand, I think that your mind shouldn't be so open that your brain falls out. Extraordinary claims should require extraordinary evidence.

Just once, I'd like to hear Dr. Schoen say, "This form of therapy is complete clap-trap. I don't think it works, and it might even be harmful". Instead, Dr. Schoen embraces everything from acupuncture, to Chinese herbs, and all things in between.

And on top of that, the author's tone is one of self-aggrandizement and condescension toward his "less-enlightened" colleagues.

I'm a life-long animal lover and pet owner. I volunteer at the local animal shelter. I really disliked this book.

Loved it.......2003-04-03

This is a wonderful publication on a meaningful subject. I didn't read the book but ordered the abridged cassette tapes. All animal lovers should know about this book or tape and read or listen. Truly one that you'll be glad you bought.

A must-have for all Shadow Songs.......2000-04-25

This book provides great insight into the Bone Flower dharma. I really appreciated how each tenant of the dharma was examined and illustrated with colorful fables. I didn't begin to understand what this dharma was really about until I read those. There's also information on how Bone Flowers often view and interact with the other dharmas, and what life is like in different parts of the Middle Kingdom for Bone Flowers. If you're looking for amazing new powers and traits, you won't find many here, but if you're curious about how to role-play this dharma, this book will help. I look forward to future books in this series.

Not Bad.......2000-03-14

"The Bone Flower Dharma book included a lot of nifty detail and insight into what it means to be a Bone Flower. However, the White Wolf writers made the all too common stereotyping of shadowy, therefore assassins as was the case for the Lasombras and the Sluaghs.

This book is an excellent description of HTTP headers. While web surfers don't need to know what messages are being sent by whom and to whom, developers do. The author describes things clearly, in detail, with examples. He even draws pictures when necessary. At the end of this book, you have a solid understanding of how the Web works and the HTTP conversations that take place.

Clear and informative guide to HTTP.......2004-02-19

To say that understanding HTTP is crucial for web development might seem like saying water is wet, yet many people don't take the time to fully understand the protocol. This book could be a good help. HTTP Developer's Handbook from SAMS gives you a great deal of information about the protocol in a clearly understood fashion.

One of the strangest feelings I've ever had reading a book is that I have a better opinion of it than does the author. Shiflett spends most of the introduction convincing the reader that this is a useful book and it seems that the start of most chapters is another few sentences telling me why the chapter is incredibly useful for me to read. I felt like yelling "I'm convinced, I'm convinced."

The book is broken up into 6 parts: `Introducing HTTP,' `HTTP Definition,' `Maintaining State,' `Performance,' `Security,' and `Evolution of HTTP.'

The first section and a large part of the introduction are the sort of information that is covered elsewhere in just as good a detail: it basically covers the obvious. The second section covers the HTTP protocol itself, with a good discussion of requests and responses, including all the nitty gritty details of the headers in some detail. This is the really useful heart of the book and it covers 80 of the 280 pages. The third, fourth and fifth sections give a too-concise look at their subject matter, I felt the book could have given much more detail here. The last section is a waste of space; in this volume I don't really need to have a small amount of information about SOAP and XML-RPC.

This book is well-written; I believe its two fatal flaws are that Shiflett seems unsure of his own book and that the book itself tries to offer everything for a developer while explaining it all for the newcomer. I think that had Shiflett given up on the newcomer and given the developer greater depth (with a lot more examples) he would have delivered a much better book. For a developer, the volume is much too light on example code, the book is not really `practical,' more `informative.'

This might be a good volume for a library, either a corporate or school library. It provides the salient information in one spot in a concise and readable manner. I think that an individual might find it a less than totally useful book for the money -- you're likely to have already have a volume or two that covers most of the information, and with most languages in web development having libraries that take care of most of the low-level stuff for you, it becomes less and less necessary to really understand the bottom level. Personally, I'll keep it for the 80 page section on the HTTP definition so I have it all in one spot.

The HTTP Developer's Handbook by HTTP expert Chris Shiflett will prove to be an invaluable instructional working reference for Web developers of all experience levels by providing a thoroughly "user friendly" understanding of underlying protocols and thereby remove unnecessary dependencies upon specific tool sets in the creation and maintenance of superior Web applications as well as facilitating adaptions to the involved technologies. HTTP has become an essential topic because the Web's importance has created an army of people creatively leveraging the Web for their specific needs. By making standards information more available to the common developer, standards compliance becomes more widespread and common, something that the industry needs. This book will easily become the standard reference for the Internet's most dominant protocol.

Excellent Information.......2003-09-12

I have been looking for a book that really details maintaining state and session management, and this book is it. Really helped me to understand this subject. Covers different methods of maintaining state instead of just the authors favorite. The explaination of cookies in this section is really good. Several example implementations are included. Also includes and excellent explanation of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and how it works. This book really helped me to deepen my understanding of HTTP.
