3 out of 5 stars A decent book, a horrible value.......2004-10-03

Chances are, if you're in the market to buy this book, it's because it's required for a class. This text provides a wide range of rhythmic exercises that are meticulously arranged in order to ease students through progressively harder territory. Indeed, there can be no doubt that a great deal of work was put into the creation of this book as a very useful pedagogical tool. (Though it should be noted that it is fairly useless for reference.) That said, it is a very slender volume for such a dear price--a very great expense for your average college student. Ms. Hall and her publishers should be truly ashamed to be driving such a hard bargain.

        Book Description

Most societies place great faith in the modern school's power to offer children a more prosperous future, from better jobs to wider social opportunities. In turn, political leaders around the world push to expand western forms of schooling, creating more slots for children, from preschool through university levels. Yet despite this remarkable institutional change, are societies becoming equitable, especially for those groups living on the margins of civil society? Why, in too many cases, has schooling failed to deliver on its promise of reducing economic and social disparities?

This volume addresses these questions, taking the reader into a variety of nations and cultural settings. With studies from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, the volume illuminates how schools can reduce or reinforce the layered stratification of society, even in nations with non-western traditions. The contributors, diverse in their own origins and viewpoints, advance our understanding of stratification by highlighting how a nation's history, particular institutions, and cultural context shape the school's efficiency as an agent of equity. The chapters move beyond individual conceptions of attainment and distinguish near-universal versus country-specific mechanisms that characterize the interplay between school expansion and inequality.

        - Shows how schools can reduce or reinforce the layered stratification of society, even in nations with non-western traditions

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and its related technologies are emerging as the standard way of creating network-wise software for wireless computing devices, such as mobile telephones. Wrox Press's crack team of programmer-writers have put together a winner in Professional WAP. To a greater extent than any other WAP book on the market, this volume shows its readers how to do real work by using WAP, Wireless Markup Language (WML), WMLScript, and various toolkits and servers that ease wireless application development. Best of all, the authors realize that most folks working as WAP developers have Web roots; they explain their subjects in terms that anyone with a bit of HTML and Web-scripting (JavaScript or VBScript) background should be able to follow easily.

Aside from the overview sections that explain WAP technologies in broad terms, this book focuses on code. Readers see software literally "develop" through the course of each chapter, as the authors start out with a relatively simple illustration and build on it, adding features and demonstrating capabilities as they go along. Generally high-grade commentary accompanies the evolving code, so this book proves almost as useful away from the development workstation as at it. Overall, the book earns its price with its in-depth coverage of such important, firm standards as WMLScript, supplemented by less detailed--but still useful--attention to such ancillary technologies as VoiceXML. --David Wall

Topics covered: Development of software for mobile telephones and other portable devices with Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), Wireless Markup Language (WML), WMLScript, Active Server Pages (ASP), ColdFusion, Java, and other languages and technologies. Task-oriented sections deal with the specifics of working with e-mail in WAP applications, integration of WAP with Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), and content pushing.

          Book Description

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) provides a universal open standard for bringing Internet content and advanced services to mobile phones and other wireless devices. Designed from the start to take account of the limitations of today's devices - small screen, low power and low bandwidth - WAP is the platform for the new generation of "media phones".

Professional WAP gives a broad overview of WAP and associated technologies - what it is, why it's useful and how to take the best advantage of it. It covers the WAP architecture and protocols, what WAP tools and servers are available for developers today and how to WAP-enable your web server. Practical examples will show you how to make content and services available over WAP using WML Decks and WMLScript. More advanced topics include administration, transactions, security, and integration of telephony with internet services (WTA).

The book is principally aimed at web developers who are experienced in HTML, scripting, probably some server-side technology, and who now want to find out how to apply their skills in the WAP world. It will also appeal to project managers, application architects or other professionals who want to gain an understanding of WAP technologies and how businesses could benefit from them.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written mishmosh.......2001-10-17

Seems like they tried very hard to get the book out very fast to capitalize on the "WAP craze" that was happening a year or so ago. It shows -- it's incomplete, inconsistent, poorly written, and even full of typos. Try "Dynamic WAP application development" instead, it's more complete and better written.

1 out of 5 stars Everything you did not wanted to know about WAP..........2001-03-03

This is the best way to get really confused before writing your first WAP application. Try Ben Forta. Application programmers need a simplified architecture showing what is relevant to their task. This book is not relevant to my task. I regret I bought it.

          5 out of 5 stars great book..........2001-01-15

this was one of the first complete WAP books. The book covers all the begining and advanced topics. I recommend this book to someone with good previous knowledge of web development.

3 out of 5 stars Good book for WAP introduction.......2000-11-03

I consider this book to be the best for giving introduction about all the aspects of WAP. I guess the title "Professional" misled the people. This book is very nicely laid out and contents are good. (The)... examples are not all that great in some of the chapters. For instance examples in Java, ASP, JSP areas are great but in the push/pull technology chapters, there are no examples at all.

Still this gave me very good insight of WAP and helped me to finish my first project on WAP.

I would definitely recommend this to any beginner to WAP. For others, this is not the book.

Dedicated to the principle that more is more, Professional Java Data provides a far-ranging tutorial of today's Java database technologies that's ideally suited for any IT professional trying to make sense of what Sun's platform offers when it comes to databases.

With over 1,300 pages, this title might well be overwhelming, but it's not. The team of authors does a good job at keeping the material under control. For the first 100 pages or so, there's little mention of Java. Instead the authors provide an overview of the nuts and bolts of software and database design, including the basics of Unified Modeling Language (UML) and designing databases.

The organizing principle of this book is to bundle tutorial material on a wide variety of Java APIs that have to do with databases on a chapter-by-chapter basis. Core APIs covered here include JDBC (including connection pooling), plus an excellent guide to basic Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) development. In between the cracks, the authors manage to cover today's multitiered Web architectures while introducing servlets and JavaServer Pages (JSP) for displaying database information in dynamically generated Web pages.

Other sections look at additional Java APIs, both established and emerging, which will help demystify these technologies for the busy programmer or IT manager. Included here are SQLJ (for embedding SQL calls inside Java code), ODMG 3.0 (for object-oriented databases in Java), and Java Data Objects (JDO), a new Sun standard for "persistent" Java classes. Along the way, the authors also manage to touch upon J2EE standards that provide the backbone for Web applications. (Material in this category includes JNDI, LDAP, and directory services, JTS and transactions, plus XML and messaging support.) There's even a peek at WAP and WML for programming wireless applications.

This title concludes with a variety of case studies that bring together various APIs covered in the rest of the book. The most ambitious of these is arguably an XML-driven Web portal that displays articles. By casting a wide net, the team authors of Professional Java Data manage to create a tutorial that doesn't have to be read cover to cover, but rather can be used to beef up your knowledge of what's arrived and what's on the horizon when it comes to Java used with databases. With a mix of approachable material on an extremely wide range of important technologies, this is a book that gives the big picture when it comes to Java databases, as well as delivering many of the details you'll need for actual development. --Richard Dragan

          Book Description

Java provides versatile technologies for data access and manipulation. This book investigates these technologies in detail and shows how they can be used to develop robust enterprise applications.

The book is divided into five sections, the first of which looks at data and object modeling. The second section investigates accessing data in relational and object oriented databases, and directory services. The focus of the following section is data presentation for web clients. The fourth section covers Enterprise JavaBeans and distributed applications. The last section of the book consists of four real-world case studies that build on the previous chapters of the book. Transactions, performance, and scalability of data applications are also discussed throughout the book.

4 out of 5 stars Wrox May Need To Review Its Book-Publishing Process!.......2001-08-03

I mostly agreed with Eric Ma. There are some areas that Wrox needs to review the whole process of publishing Java-related books. Here are some drawbacks that I can draw from reading recent Java-related books:

          (1) Repeated Contents: Materials about Servlet, JSP, EJB, JNDI, JDBC, XML, etc are repeated over and over many books. This could waste time, money, and papers for both Wrox and readers.

(2)Books or Articles?: I asked myself: is Wrox publishing books or articles? Each book is written by many authors and the book's flow is inconsistent. The assessment that it is not a book but a collection of articles may partially true. It is true that a book if written by a team of authors could speed up the process of releasing it, but if Wrox editors and coordinators have to do their better jobs.

I suggest that Wrox should review its strategy of publishing books to avoid the repeating of materials over and over and thus bring down the cost associated with publishing the books. The final result is: readers and publisher will both save time and money. Otherwise, readers will loose their belief with Wrox.

4 out of 5 stars Decent survey of JDBC, but with extra fat to be trimmed.......2001-07-08

For the past 2 years Wrox has been publishing books dedicated to Windows-based data access (ADO etc.), but the same cannot be said about their Java/database collection. Although you find chapters on JDBC scattered all-over almost all server-side Java related books by Wrox, there was no single volume from them that teaches JDBC first, and then show how it is used by the newer dependent technologies, until this book arrived. After looking through this book, I must say the authors and editors have done a rather commendable job.

Why do I make the above conclusion? Let me give you my general impression of the book first. A theme repeated in several of my recent reviews on books from Wrox is about the problem in coherence associated with multi-author books. Well, having more than a dozen of authors for a single book seems to be a fact of life (for books from Wrox at least) now, as the publication cycle gets shorter. I was rather surprised to find out that the organization and coherence is very good in this book, i.e., there is very little overlap among chapters. Also, this books uses JDBC cleverly to tie other pieces of J2EE together, making smooth transitions from one chapter to another. If you want to know, this factor alone prompted me to add an extra star to the overall rating of the book.

Let's now run down the chapters of this book quickly. The first 115 pages deals object-oriented and database modeling, and can be skipped by any "Professional" developer. Then after your obligatory intro to JDBC API, the next chapter covers the JDBC 2.0 optional package. This is the best treatment of this topic I have seen. Then another chapter is all about SQLJ, another first. The effort of having a chapter on database performance should be lauded, where connection pooling, prepared statements and stored procedures usage are demoed. The reminder of the book is about applying JDBC in various J2EE components, such as JSP, servlets, EJB, JMS, and XML. For this part of the book, even though I accept the fact the proper stage has to be set for each one of them, I still don't believe the book found the right balance between focusing on JDBC and showing what these other technologies are about. A large number of pages are used to teach basic JNDI, servlets, JSP's, and EJB's stuff (remember there is already a book on J2EE from Wrox!). Therefore, it is up to the reader to discover the real nuggets of gold hidden in this pile, which are far and in between in places. I found that some critical issues are not highlighted or details are lacking, such as how to use connection pooling/data sources in servlets, JSP's, and EJB's, the threading issues related to sharing database connections, and good database practices in BMP EJB's. However, the one thing I cannot complain about is that the book did not forget to teach the transaction aspect of EJB with a good depth (there is a short ans sweet chapter on using JTA/JTS inside EJB). There is also a chapter on the brand-new JDO framework, even though the spec is still in a state of flux. Finally, there are 4 case study chapters in the book - although the design and implementation are limited in scope and as a whole those samples do not teach all you need to do know about enterprise scale J2EE system development, they do provide a flavor of how JDBC is used in real world, together with setting up Tomcat, JRun, Orion, and WebLogic to access MS SQL Server and Oracle databases.

Now my overall take of this book. For VB/SQL and pure back-end PL/SQL developers who are eager to jump on the Java express train and need a suitable platform (especially for the ones who learn best from playing with actual code), I recommend this book as one of several you should own. Compared to other JDBC books from say O'Reilly and Sun's JDBC Tutorial, this book is the most up-to-date, contains the most source code, and has the broadest coverage of related topics. But keep in mind some of the advanced topics such as EJB and JMS can be intimidating for new-comers. On the other side of the coin, people who are advanced in various server-side Java technologies are unlikely to benefit a great deal from this book and should look elsewhere for info (for example Wrox's J2EE and upcoming EJB titles).

Apparently some people buy into this kind of work. But I found it to be poorly written and filled with inaccuracies. It appears that no technical reviewers reviewed this book before it was published. A very sloppy book - like a first draft of a book that was never completed.

I was especially disappointed to see the name Prentice Hall on this book. This publisher should be ashamed.

Hougland churns out books for the sake of churning out books. This one is a worthless rehash of a questionable technology. Save your money on something else. The writing quality is extremely poor, cursory, and appears to be rushed - probably to get this to market before the WAP standard is obliterated anyway.

          1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2001-07-17

The only reason this book was written was simply to get published. It is a poor example of a technical manual. Hougland is a pretender who writes like he knows what he is talking about, but is only good at ripping off other people's work.

Save your money for toilet paper or Huggies.

I really liked this book. most of the other WAP / WML titles either just talked about WML or low level-WAP protocols. Thhis book covers key concepts like security and has a lot of code examples. I have even used the JDeck wap library at work. I have never seen anyone use the multi-part MIME stuff with WML before. very cool, bleeding edge stuff.

Learn from the experts how WAP can be integrated into any network
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) continues to be the driving force behind the megamerger of the Internet and the mobile Web phone. But while developers and network managers are increasingly expected to be WAP savvy, there is no archive of sample programs for them to draw upon. Written by two wireless Internet experts, this book/CD-ROM package fills the gap in the field, giving readers powerful tools that they can use to learn the technical integration aspects of this exciting new technology. The authors provide a top-notch tutorial on how to bring WAP to the enterprise or to Internet users, getting readers quickly up to speed with many sample applications that can be customized for specific needs. Also included is an introduction to VoiceXML with a fully functional sample application.

5 out of 5 stars An amature's review of WAP Integration.......2001-11-26

I am a retired executive and have started my own consulting business recently. The new world of Wireless Internet has intrigued me for some time but knowing nothing about it I was reluctant to get too far on my own until just last week I got a copy of the book "WAP Integration" by Srdjan Vujosevic and Robert Laberge.
The book is very imressive in that the subject matters are well organized, the writting style is easy to read and understand and at times fun , yet contains a wealth of information covering topics for those who are amatures (like me)all the way to the more professional and knowledgeble people whose daily life is programming or creating new application protocols.
I am able to recommend the book as a "five star" product based on my limited know how of this exciting and upcoming new technology.
I am now "technically" competent enough to send e-mails through my wireless (but Internet capable) phone, and understand some of the technical concepts which were very hazy at best when I started into the book.
I especially like the info provided in "Related Sites" enabling the reader to further enhance their knowledge in any particular focused area.

This book has great working examples of WAP. They talk about each line of code, show exactly what is what and have excellent template examples. Great work!!

1 out of 5 stars NOT SUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT.......2006-10-03

I bought this book thinking that I could get a 360 day free trial as is advertised on the cd that comes with the book... Suprise.. Microsoft will not give you a valid activation key.. The only thing you will get is 1-2 hours of being transferred all over microsoft support groups.
The book itself is fairly good if you are not fimilar with their product, but Do Not purchase this book for the "Free trial" software.

            1 out of 5 stars A 400 page brochure.......2005-12-17

This book is really a waste of time for anybody. It's a 400 plus page brochure on the new improved features of Windows Server. It doesn't explain how to do anything, simply introduces the new features. For someone familiar with Windows 2000, I would imagine they wouldn't want to sit there flipping through the 400 pages just to go "WOW", and for someone like myself, an absolute newbie to server technology, without any practical background on the subject, it all meant nothing to me. OK, Active directory now dooblats roaming profiles (?) eh? Yes, you get a 360 day copy of Windows 2003 to play with but it doesn't tell you how to play with it!
I find no redeeming features about this book. I should have read reviews before buying it. I mean, why buy advertising? I gave it 1 star so as to be able to post this review, as it doesn't allow zero.

            3 out of 5 stars A "list" of improvements.......2003-04-10

If you're looking for a techie's "how to" book, keep searching. This book provides a very fundamental "list" of new enhancements and features to Windows Server 2003. Hence the title, "Introduction" to Windows Server 2003. It is very basic and I found myself lulled to sleep. I give this book 3 stars because I blame myself for not awaiting a more hands-on book that can take you thru the installation steps, configuration of different services, etc. If you're a total newbie and want to read up on what this product can do, this is the book for you. However, you can most likely read about these things in a much annotated version in any tech magazine that'll soon be reporting on Server 2003. However, you do get a 360 day evaluation copy of the product. So its not ALL bad.

3 out of 5 stars Product Overview Only.......2003-02-18

The book provides a good overview of features and changes from earlier Windows versions, but has very little practical information. It would be useful as a single source for new features if you are already familiar with Windows 2000 features and Active Directory. One area where it does go into some practical advice and detail is in installation and upgrade. The biggest disappointment is that most, if not all, of the information in the book is readily available from the Microsoft Web site.
