                Book Description

Rich with implications for the history of sexuality, gender issues, and patterns of Hellenic literary imagining, Marcel Detienne's landmark book recasts long-standing ideas about the fertility myth of Adonis. The author challenges Sir James Frazer's thesis that the vegetation god Adonis-- whose premature death was mourned by women and whose resurrection marked a joyous occasion--represented the annual cycle of growth and decay in agriculture. Using the analytic tools of structuralism, Detienne shows instead that the festivals of Adonis depict a seductive but impotent and fruitless deity--whose physical ineptitude led to his death in a boar hunt, after which his body was found in a lettuce patch. Contrasting the festivals of Adonis with the solemn ones dedicated to Demeter, the goddess of grain, he reveals the former as a parody and negation of the institution of marriage.

Detienne considers the short-lived gardens that Athenian women planted in mockery for Adonis's festival, and explores the function of such vegetal matter as spices, mint, myrrh, cereal, and wet plants in religious practice and in a wide selection of myths. His inquiry exposes, among many things, attitudes toward sexual activities ranging from "perverse" acts to marital relations.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to read.......2003-06-29

Detienne's book is a wonderfull and thought provoking book.
he presents a structuralist analysis of the myth of Adonis.
It is very hard to provide convincing structuralist interpretations to myths and it seems that in structuralism
the journey is at least as important as the end result
(see most of the work of Levi Strauss). However, in this case Detienne's analysis is rather compeling and provides the reader with amazing insights into greek thought about food, perfumes,
sex and all the other good things in life. If you wish to read just one structuralist work to get a feeling for this
fascinating and highly non trivial mode of analysis of human thought, I would recommend this book

                  Book Description

Gender and the Body in the Ancient Mediterranean builds up an important source of interdisciplinary information for the study of gender and the body in history. The central and unifying theme of this volume is the body's relation to gender. Ranging over the formation of the gendered body in ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, Egypt, Greece, Rome and Judea, the volume challenges the body as a sign of what is natural. The individual articles disclose that the surface of the ancient body is a crucial site for the display of gender difference, the body's examination and physical transformation or containment is revealed as fundamental to ancient societies' gendered practices of power. The volume demonstrates the central role of antiquity in the developing cultural formation of the gendered body as a concept and a practice in modern societies.

                    Book Description

Parchments of Gender builds up an important source of inter-disciplinary information for the study of gender and the body in ancient history. The central and unifying theme is the body's relation to gender. With essays covering the ancient communities of Greece, Rome, and Judaea, the volume argues that the body is culturally constructed and not a sign of what is natural. Ancient bodies are "parchments of gender": textual skins on which gender is inscribed and on which can be traced other interconnecting matrices of knowledge and power that give these bodies their seemingly legible contours. The volume also demonstrates the central role of antiquity in the developing cultural formation of the gendered body as a concept, a practice and an experience in modern societies.

                        Book Description

The Perl/Tk Pocket Reference is a companion volume to Learning Perl/Tk, an O'Reilly Animal Guide. Learning Perl/Tk is a tutorial for Perl/Tk, the extension to Perl for creating graphical user interfaces. With Tk, Perl programs can be window-based rather than command-line based, with buttons, entry fields, listboxes, menus, scrollbars, balloons, tables, dialogs, and more. And Perl/Tk programs run on UNIX and Windows-based computers. This small book is a handy reference guide geared toward the advanced Perl/Tk programmer. Novice Perl/Tk programmers will find that its compact size gives them a global view of Perl/Tk's capabilities; they can then turn to Learning Perl/Tk for details. The Perl/Tk Pocket Reference describes every Perl/Tk graphical element, including general widget and variable information, callbacks, geometry management, bindings, events, and window management, as well as composite widget, font, and image creation and manipulation commands.

While desperately hanging on for Mr O'Reilly's 'Learn Perl/Tk', I needed another fix of Perl and up popped this microscopic manual. For such a fantastic language, possibly the basis of all future non-web GUI development, there is a surprising lack of material out there on Perl/Tk, but this book does sterling work to plug that perldoc gap. As an Oracle DBA on Solaris, I now have more GUI database access tools than you can shake a slider at, and most have arisen from my scavenging of ./demos/widget, 'Advanced Perl' and this tiny reference. Once you get the hang of the foreshortened syntax, it's good to be able to flick from widget to widget without trawling through heavy indexes. I do have two complaints though; one, this pocket reference could've contained far more on 'Tiler', 'Table' and a few of the other more esoteric widgets - you could double the size of this book, and still fit it in an ant's lunchbox; two, if Mr O'Reilly delays the release of 'Learn Perl/Tk' again, I'm going to have to learn super Visual Basic J++ on Windows 98 and to hell with the consequences :-). Seriously though, this pocket reference has saved me hours of tracking down camera-shy Perl/Tk FAQs, and if you don't lose it through a small hole in your trousers, it may do the same for you. Top work.

                        Book Description

The Tcl/Tk combination is increasingly popular because it lets you produce sophisticated graphical interfaces with a few easy commands, develop and change scripts quickly, and conveniently tie together existing utilities or programming libraries. The Tcl/Tk Pocket Reference,a handy reference guide to the basic Tcl language elements, Tcl and Tk commands, and Tk widgets, is a companion volume to Tcl/Tk in a Nutshell.

3 out of 5 stars I keep going back to Ousterhout.......2006-02-24

This reference is good if you are only looking for syntax or available options to a command you understand.

If you have questions about the way the commands work, or the concepts behind them (what is a list?) then you'll find that you keep going back to the larger books.

So I am currently in Ousterhout for most of my questions and then opening this infrequently to check syntax.

I think it could have had a more extensive index and I cannot see any order in the table of contents.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of info in a small package........2004-02-14

These pocket reference guides pack an amazing amount of information. In my opinion, this book (along with other pocket references) are better than some full sized books. One thing I like about this book is that it goes straight to the point. For example, I wanted to look up the after command. So, in a few seconds I find the description, and I immediately learn the syntax for this command. There is no long description or theory to read through, the bulk of what you need to know is right there. Anybody who is in to TCL/TK should get this book!

4 out of 5 stars A different kind of animal.......2003-11-30

Tcl (Tool command language) scripting language.
TK (took Kit) graphic tool to help build graphic interface.
You will be surprised to know that you know a lot of the commands and concepts already.
The reason for different languages is to be more efficient in the purpose of the program. In my case this is used for writing code for phone switching systems. No one can remember all the commands; so it is wise to carry your pocket reference with you. For those that do not have the occasion to use Tcl/Tk the reference helps you stay culturally literate. And who know one day you may have the need and say "now where did I put that Pocket reference?"

3 out of 5 stars Good if you like such things..........2001-03-21

If it's important to you to have a quick reference in paper form, then by all means this is the book for you. It's technically accurate. It is getting a bit out of date, but Tcl has an excellent track record for maintaining upward compatibility. You may miss out on new features, but you won't be led too far astray.

If, on the other hand, you're comfortable with browsing the manual on-line, then save your money. There's little in this book that isn't also in the on-line manuals that come with Tcl/Tk, and you can be certain that the on-line manual matches the Tcl/Tk release that you're using.

                        4 out of 5 stars Tcl/Tk Pocket Reference.......2000-04-05

The Tcl/Tk Pocket Reference is a good basic guide to the Tcl syntax. The text is a simple straight-forward listing of the different Tcl terms, their functions and their signatures, alphabetized by category.

For a quick overview of Perl and its functionality, methods, and functions, there's nothing better than this tiny volume.

                        Book Description

The Perl 5 Pocket Reference provides a complete overview of Perl, from variables to input and output, from flow control to regular expressions, from functions to document formats -- all packaged into a convenient, carry-around guide that can easily be inserted into your favorite Perl programming manual.

This new version of the official quick-reference guide to the Perl programming language provides a summary of Perl syntax rules and a complete list of operators, built-in functions, and standard library modules, all with brief descriptions. The guide has been revised for Perl version 5.005 and includes the newest Perl features, like enhanced regular expressions, multithreading, and the Perl compiler.

Perl, having previously established itself as the UNIX scripting tool of choice, is establishing itself as the tool of choice in numerous programming spheres, ranging from the World Wide Web to general-purpose programming. Perl combines in one language virtually all the functionality of the C, sed, and awk programming languages, as well as many functions of a shell.

Perl is also very suitable for embedding in other software systems, such as Web servers. It is available on almost every UNIX system and on a wide range of other systems, including Windows and Macintosh.

The Perl 5 Pocket Reference is the perfect companion to Learning Perl, a carefully paced tutorial course by Randal L. Schwartz, and Programming Perl, the complete, authoritative reference work coauthored by Perl developer Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen, and Schwartz.

3 out of 5 stars It could have been perfect...........2003-01-27

Why such a small book wastes 2 pages on a useless forward by Larry Wall is beyond me.

Larry should stick to writing code.

                        5 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion.......2001-11-19

This is just what I needed - a quick reminder to refresh my memory occasionally without referring to the other perl books or docs. It's small and inexpensive -I keep one at home and one at the office. This book is great for jogging your memory to remind you of use and syntax but it should not be relied on as a true "reference". If you have the Camel and the Llama book this is a perfect addition.

3 out of 5 stars Could be much better.......2001-07-12

The Perl 5 pocket reference is a nice handy little tool if you are willing to search for things. Unfortunately, the book does not come with such things as an index - a must in reference books.

The book is organized by category - not alphabetically, therefore making it harder to find the information in question. If the book included a few examples, an index, and perhaps a different organization scheme, it would be a much better book. Unfortunately it isn't, therefore sending me elsewhere for reference.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of their best Pocket References.......2001-01-08

Maybe there is too much to Perl to squeeze into one tiny guide? Maybe Perl can't be organized like that? For whatever reason, I find Learning Perl (another great O'Reilly book) to be the perfect "Pocket" reference, even though it's a standard book. This Pocket reference is too small to be of any real use, unlike many of their other Pocket references.

3 out of 5 stars Too pint-sized to be useful.......2000-10-06

This reference is perhaps too brief. I find myself skipping it and going straight for Programming Perl. If I need to quickly look up the usage of a function, the Unix man pages are far more useful -- and faster.
