This book is a must for any Zeppelin fan,Peter Grant defined what the roll of a manager should be,Led Zep are a great band and left a huge larger than life legacy that wont be repeated again. They may have been overlooked or perhaps just done their thing.I believe without the guidance of Peter Grant and his headkickin ways I dont think Zeppelin would of been the rock gods they were.He made the band rich beyond their wildest dreams,he wheeled and dealed and got them gigs at sellout arenas.Peter Grant was the man,Led Zep were his boys.Do yourself a favour and buy this book if you want to know what rock n roll was about.

3 out of 5 stars Much filler, still fries the bacon.......2004-02-12

I liked this well enough. It held me all the way through. But it really seemed as though it should have been an extended magazine article or part of another, more detailed book. I walked away feeling that I did not have a better understanding of G than when I came, and THAT'S a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book..........2003-06-16

...by Chris Welch, and this time on the heavy-hitting mananger behind Led Zeppelin: Peter Grant. Despite a few glaring factual errors, such as the story behind Swan Song's (Zeppelin's vanity 70's record label)logo, and a few typos this is another good Welch-penned Zeppelin effort. Being a big fan of the band I was very surprised on the chapters devoted to the group's film Song Remains The Same, and their devastating 1977 US tour. These chapters alone are worth your time and money. This book, S. Davis'Hammer Of The Gods, and Richard Cole's Stairway To Heaven, read back to back will tell you all you'll need to know about the best hard rock band the world has ever known: Led Zeppelin!

4 out of 5 stars Answers a Whooooole Lotta Nagging Questions.......2003-02-20

Much insight on the band on and off stage. And Peter Grant, this brilliant and threataning manager is brought out from behind the shadows and emerges as a pivotal individual in rock history.

Simply a fascinating man, who was just as human as you or I. If he made any errors, the worst in his life were hiring John Bindon onto his security staff, and marrying a woman who was not a "single man woman.". I also now understand why he was referred to as the "fifth member of the Band".

The Book is very informative and thorough. The only problem I had with the book is that Welch even considered using Richard Cole as a source of information. That cost him one star. I also don't like the photographs of Peter giving us the finger. That almost cost him another star.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2002-10-26

I really appreciated this book. Chris Welsh has been one of the greatest insiders of Led Zeppelin and provides numberless details about Peter and his relation with the band. I liked very much the info that came from interviews with people related, like Mickie Most, Allan Callan, Ed Bricknell and Warren Grant, among others.
The book also has the merit of being original on a very worn out subject. Indeed a very good buy for both Zep die-hards and neophites.

Book Description

In 1978 the Reverend Billy Graham himself consecrated Las Vegas's place in the American cultural mainstream by taking his "crusade for Christ" there. He found the resort "a nice place to visit," and pointed out that, while he did not gamble himself, the Bible said nothing definitive against
the practice.

This book is a social history of American gambling in a series of frontier settings ranging from seventeenth-century Jamestown to twentieth-century Nevada. The book points out the affinity between gambling and frontiers, showing how both thrived on high expectations, risk-taking, opportunism and
movement, and both helped to shape a distinctive culture.

The first half of the book paints a vivid picture of gambling in the colonial and early national frontiers, on the Missiissippi River, and in the California Gold Rush. Findlay describes how in the ninteenth century progessional gamblers, operating in towns and riverboats along the Mississippi,
popularized casino games, and then tells how these gaming practices were transported to the mining frontiers of the Far West. The second half of the book traces Las Vegas' rise as America's ultimate resort. The culmination of almost four centuries of westward migration and chance-taking by
Americans, Las Vegas represents a link between America's frontier past and the contemporary values of the Sunbelt culture.

John J. Findlay is Assistant Professor of United States History at the Pennsylvania State University.

4 out of 5 stars An anthropological and social history of American gambling.......2004-04-29

The focus of "People of Chance: Gambling in American Society from Jamestown to Las Vegas" is indeed on the affinity between gambling and frontier societies. John M. Findlay, then an Assistant Professor of United States History at The Pennsylvania State University, points to a quotation from Alexis de Tocqueville, who offered this speculation on the American character: "Those who live in the midst of democratic fluctuations have always before their eyes the image of chance, and they end by liking all undertakings in which chance plays a part." Following de Tocqueville's lead, Findlay focuses on the American fascination with games of chance as a key to our natural culture, tracing the development of a distinctly American style of gambling through more than 350 years of history from 17th-century Jamestown to 20th-century Las Vegas.

The central thesis here is that both gambling and frontier societies thrived on high expectations, risk-taking, opportunism, and movement. Consequently, gambling gained an acceptance on the frontier that it did not have in more settled parts of the nation. While Easterners bet too, they did not do it as publicly or adventurously as Westerners. The first half of the book details gambling in the colonial and early national frontiers, on the Mississippi River, and in the California Gold Rush. One of the most interesting arguments in this section is how each generation of westward-moving Americans first attempted to imitate the betting practices of the east, usually English style horse-racing and lottery schemes, but ended up modifying them for the American temperament.

This becomes epitomized by the refinement in the old Southwest between 1800 and 1848 when professional gamblers, operating in towns and riverboats all along the Mississippi, popularized casino games. In the mining frontiers of California and the Far West, casino gambling became a short-lived, high-volume industry, embodying the Gold Rush mentality until society eventually become more civilized. Of course, that did not mean that this was the end of gambling in the West, just that it had to be transformed into something more acceptable for American society in the late 20th century.

The last half of the book focuses on the rise of Las Vegas as the ultimate American resort destination. Findlay argues that Las Vegas is the culmination of almost four centuries worth of westward migration and chance-taking by Americans. As such, Las Vegas is the living link between America's frontier past and the contemporary, forward-looking values of the Sunbelt culture defined by California, which is consistent with Tom Wolfe's "super-hyper-version" of the whole new way of life that Americans created in the period after World War II. In his Epilogue Findlay gets to touch on the meteoric rise of Atlantic City as the rival of Las Vegas, which embodies the newfound belief that gaming now had a more legitimate place in American life.

Most readers will appreciate the history of the first half of this book more than the sociological implications drawn in the second, although most readers will recognize that Las Vegas epitomizes the restless, commercial, and middle-class orientations of modern Americans. But the way these two halves come together is Findlay's argument that the far western location of Las Vegas as an index to national culture was not incidental. What struck me was the way Findlay documented the transformation of gambling in this country, which went through distinctive stages just as the nation did during those same years. By the end of the book I could at least appreciate Findlays' anthropological view of American gaming.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what it claims........2001-02-22

While this book claims to be a history of gambling in American society it really is a history of organized gambling on the American frontier, whereever that may be. While the author presents the interesting idea that gambling has followed the frontier he fails to explain what is happening behind the frontier. Illegal gambling is hardly mentioned, possibily because it is harder to research. It's an interesting book and provides a good bibliography for those interested in pursuing the topic, but alone it is not a great resource.

        Book Description

Western society is now a very different, very difficult mission field. This insightful book shows how the church can more effectively carry out its missionary calling by building a new theology of evangelism for today's world. After charting the church's historical shift away from a biblical theology of evangelism and highlighting the contemporary challenges to evangelical ministry, Darrell Guder discusses what a truly missional theology will mean for the current institutional structures and practices of the church.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Prophetic, Helpful.......2007-06-01

When he wrote this book, Darrell Guder was Peachtree Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth at Columbia Thoelogical Seminary, Decatur, GA. He is now Princeton Theological Seminary's Dean of Academic Affairs and the Henry Winters Luce Professor of Missional and Ecumenical Theology.

Originally planned as a revision of his "Be My Witnesses," this book is instead its sequel. His thesis is that "the only way that evangelization can truly be the heart of ministry will be through the continuing conversion of the church," which can only take place through authentic interaction with the very gospel it professes, communicates and embodies.

The book is divided into three parts. In Part I, "The Church's Calling to Evangelistic Ministry," Guder examines in Chapter One the twentieth century debate about the church's mission against the background of a survey of church history and the prevalence of "diffusionist mission." This is Lamin Sanneh's term for Christendom's wedding of mission with colonialism, spreading the "cultural advantages" and culture patterns of the West in the guise of spreading the gospel. World War I and World War II overturned Christian self-confidence, while exposing westerners to the sophistication of other cultures they had formerly imagined as being pagan, uncomplicated, and monolithically needy. This encounter resulted in the Church reconsidering the nature of mission in a post-colonial world, finding its center in the Missio Dei (Mission of God), a theme highlighted in Karl Barth's address at the 1932 Brandenburg Missionary Conference. The chapter provides a concise and comprehensive overview of key terms, including mission, mission theology, missiology, explores the distinction between evangelism and evangelization, and the relationship between evangelism/evangelization and mission.

In Chapter Two he defines the gospel as fundamentally "the good news of God" as revealed in his saving acts in Christ in pursuit of the Mission of God and in proleptic revelation of the coming reign of God. Here, as throughout the volume, Guder portrays Jesus as both messenger and message of the gospel.

Chapter Three highlights "witness" as Guder's preferred master metaphor for the mission of the church, exploring the roots, contours and implications of the term.

Part II, "Challenges: The Church's Need for Conversion," begins, in Chapter Four by exploring "translation" as the task of evangelization. This includes not only linguistic translation, but translating the gospel into the culture of the receptors, whereby both the missionary and the receptors gain new insight into the meaning and impact of the gospel Chapters Five and Six explore reductionism, a major theme of the book, and how in every age, the church has exercised and maintained, domesticating the gospel. This has inevitably resulted in a truncated and distorted gospel which ill serves both missionary and receptor.

Part III, "Implications: The Conversion of the Church," examines the continual conversion of the local congregation, what, why, its how it is possible and to what end (Chapter Seven), and explores means toward the ongoing conversion of the institutional structures of the Church. The Book concludes with a final exhortatory postlude.

This book is the work of a seasoned scholar. It is comprehensive, tightly organized, well-researched and boldly prophetic, calling today's church to missional faithfulness. It calls the conservative Church to broaden its definition of mission and mainstream churches to explore more deeply what it means to be witnesses of Him in the varied contexts of life. Guder writes clearly and passionately, providing not only the rationale but also a blueprint for first steps toward authenticity for those troubled by the church's missional ambivalence on the one hand, or dissatisfied with bumper-sticker caricatures of the gospel, on the other. The book serves both the liberal and conservative side of the Protestant religious spectrum and deserves to be read by church too inclined to say "I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing," while not knowing that they are "wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked" (Rev 3:17).

For Messianic Jews seeking to identify and implement a missiology suited to the times, to the Jewish people, and to a post-misisonary Messianic Judaism, this work is valuable for the scope of the information it provides, and also for the gaps one finds throughout. These gaps are due to the supersessonist assumptions which have characterized the church since the second century. With the birth of the modern State of Israel, the mood of reflection that has come upon post-Holocaust Christianity, and the current emergence of a self-aware Messianic Jewish remnant, what is called for, yet totally missing from Guder's treatment and from almost the entire missiological community, is a post-supersessionist missiology sensitive to the unique and enduring covenant status of the Jewish people. Such a missiology can only have revolutionary implications for the contours of the gospel preached to the Jews, and how Yeshua-believing Jews ought to live out their faithfulness to the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the God of Sinai.

This revolution is no mere contextualization of the gospel message for the Jewish context. Rather, it requires the convulsive realization that the Church has for two millennia reserved for itself alone the category "people of God," not reckoning with the persistence and implications of God's consummating plans for the descendants of Jacob. The church's question should not be merely the evangelistic question, "What should we do with regard to Jewish people?", but rather, "How do the descendants of Jacob fit in with the Missio Dei and what does that mean for us and our mission in the world?"

The church and the Jewish mission world have yet to grapple with these challenges. This demonstrates the need for a Messianic Jewish missiological voice to serve as a point of reference for a church and missions world which which must recalibrate their understandings if they would serve the will of God in these transitional and momentous times.

Dr Guder cannot be blamed for the supersessionism underlying his work, as he is a product of his context. Happily, he is also a courageous prophet to a church that needs to hear what he has to say.

5 out of 5 stars The trouble with the American church.......2007-01-28

Guder does an excellent job of explaining the historical development of the current status of much of the church in the United States today. He describes the problem as "reductionism," a reducing of the good news to something less than the full gospel and then claiming that this reduced gospel is the full package. Western Christianity has consistently been reduced to the salvation of the individual soul and has forgotten that our identity as Christians is to be Christ's witnesses in the world, the community formed by God's calling that is sent to bear witness in our words, actions, and in community life. Guder's critique is much needed today with so much focus on strategies for church growth, marketing, focus on the individual, and use of secular big business methods. What the church needs is to be continually converted itself, engaging in constant Bible study and repentance from our culturally based reductionisms. Unless the church is continuously being evangelized itself, it cannot truly engage in the evangelization of the world.

3 out of 5 stars Gospel Reductionism Fixed by Continual Conversion.......2003-04-25

This is certainly a profound, well written work. One can tell that Guder has thought long and hard on this, and has reflected as well on many others' reflection.

Here he presents the case against the Western Christian church which he feels has succumbed to gosepl reductionism. By this, he means when Christians reduce the gospel in all its fulness and mission to a controllable, manageable level. Pertinent to this understanding is this quote: "We are constantly tempted to assert that our way of understanding the Christian faith is a final version of Christian truth."

He resonates to the freeflowing tension always seeking to move Christianity along unknown paths, ever broadening and deepening its hold on humanity. Reductionism as he defines it severly restricts it as it diminshes what for him is vital and called its "incarantional witness." Here he refers to God's grace reaching out in a Christian's call and vocation.

He appears to drift back and forth from orthodoxy to something far from it, especially evidenced by his continued reference to ecumenism as being important and vital element in the repentance and continual conversion needed by Christianity. Although he speaks at length passionately about Jesus and the cross, he severely reproves the church for focus on salvation of individuals.

By continual conversion he refers to a rather liquid, dynamic movement in Christianity without boundaries, yet constantly refining what institution is already there. When Chrisitans becomed concerned about maintenance, then mission is lost. Continual conversion refers to this movement back to mission.

In many cases on many ecclesial and theological issues, he advocates a moderate position, but this only appears to be one mitigated by his resolve to movement from within existing ecclessiastic structures, rather than disbandonment and new ventures.

There is much to be contemplated in this writing that is worthwhile to reflect on even if one is not of the author's theological posture or without accepting his proposed remedies. Although careful to provide definitions, what is omitted from them and what is taken back at places where one felt good was given must be carefully discerned.

It give some very good details on all the shows, some insights from a lot of the people that made The Next Generation. The pictures and drawings are stunning to say the least. If you're a fan of Star Trek, this is definitely essential to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars If you own one book about TNG, let this be it........2002-07-04

First of all, this book is huge. Really. It is tall and wide as well as being hefty. It does the amazing task of covering 7+ years of television history regarding the show responsible for renewed interest in science-fiction.

The history is indeed an interesting one. Many tidbits are revealed, and if you are a trivia junkie, it will fill the endless void nicely.

The pictures are great, as well as commentary and brief interviews of folks. The only thing I felt that could have been done better were episode summaries. They fell by the wayside a bit; but the sheer volume of information contained in the book makes up for it.

It is well-constructed, and has lasted repeated flipping and reading. That and its size make it an excellent coffee table book. People who have no interest in Trek pick it up and are fascinated by the information. It makes a great gift, for yourself or the TNG fan in your life. Or even, the television trivia buff as well.

        5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Tribute.......2001-11-28

This book is something special in that it combines the usual prose of a "Making of..." with a wealth of large-size images and illustrations as well as a detailed guide to the seven seasons of TNG. Included are sections on "Generations", "First Contact" and, in the newest edition, "Insurrection". Although some of the images are already known from The Art of Star Trek, this is another great look behind the scenes. More than the rather loosely arranged images in the The Art of Star Trek, this book really tells the story of a series that is developed through seven seasons.

The Continuing Mission is probably the best book about TNG with all of its aspects. It was obviously written to be entertaining in the first place, so it never gets too profound. Nevertheless, we learn a great deal, for instance, where Guinan's name comes from, how many writers mingled together the script for "Yesterday's Enterprise", or how a shuttle may become a big starship. The only slight criticism I have about it is that the text is mostly separate from the images. Although there are captions, I would have liked to know more about several of the images.

The sub-title of the book is "A Tenth Anniversary Tribute", and it is a worthy tribute in any respect.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational, Dedicated, Essential - A Fine Tribute to TNG.......2001-06-04

This book is essential reading for any Star Trek fan. Even if you may not be a big fan of TNG (I myself prefer DS9), this beautiful tribute will surely improve your understanding of the days before, during, and after the creation of TNG series.

The text is written in a very amiable, intimate and lively manner, obviously showing the authors' love and dedication to the TNG world. Content-wise, the book is utterly fascinating: there is everything from the stories behind the casting ("But he's bald!"), to the creation and incarnations of the spacecraft of the show, to interesting anecdotes both clever and funny, highlighting special episodes, audience reaction, notes on production; even clear and non-technical explanations of various financial aspects of producing TNG and the movies. Absolutely nothing comes across as overly technical.

The book is divided into chapters tracing each season and movie involving TNG cast; each "season" also includes episode-by-episode synopses by the side - very helpful not just as an episode guide, but as a way of guiding the reader throughout the TNG journey. In fact, one of the best things about this book is its strong sense of chronological unity - reading the book from front to back, you are surely and rapturously guided through the entire TNG history - it feels like getting to know an old friend anew.

The book is made even better by the tons of colour photos throughout - ranging from pictures of props to sets, to ships, production designs, cast, scenes, costumes, production... it's just fantastic.

A lot of intelligence and dedication has gone into producing this book. I really can't praise it enough except to say: now I admire Star Trek: The Next Generation even more.

5 out of 5 stars An accurate insight and timely call.......2005-10-03

I saw this book out of the corner of my eye as I was rushing through the church bookstore on my way home from yet another sunday service. It caught my attention, and even though I had been on many short term mission trips to China before (and thus had a sound knowledge of modern day China), I was compelled to buy this book and read it.

I'm certainly glad that I did. This book provides a balanced and in-depth view of China and Christianity today. It answers the questions many of us have about modern-day China and the role we have to play in it's future.

Don't read this book expecting your life to be the same afterwards. You will be challenged to the core. You will find yourself called to live a life of action - a life of passion.

The continuing heartcry for China goes on... Can you hear the call?

                Book Description

The good life isn't always what it's cracked up to be, at least in the mind of cult celebrity T-fey Richards. His preparations for a life away from Earth left him a position where he had everything he needed, except a reason to go on. He needed a project to jumpstart his life and thus Mission: Earth was born. The five survivors of a catastrophe that put an end to life on Earth were reunited…and they had a plan. In retrospect it seemed simple. They knew the defining event that put Earth on a collision course with fate and what had to be done to prevent it. But something goes terribly wrong. Now T-fey and his friends are on the clock. They have thirty-six hours to complete their mission or suffer the consequences.

5 out of 5 stars Don't look any further! This is the one.......2005-12-15

In a manufacturing environment, a correct drawing is key to production and Cost of Ownership! I looked in numerous places to locate a good SW book on Detailing and Drawing. This is a fabulous book. I've been a user of SW for over two plus years and I love the software. SW is a great CAD tool.

I had countless questions on various areas that include: Developing a predefined drawing template, Creating design table parameters for parts and assemblies, understanding drawing properties, creating offset section and aligned section views, and using tolerance symbols with surface finish and weld symbols to name a few.

The section on ASME Y14.1 is informative and will be a useful reference. This is a must have book if you creature drawing in a manufacturing environment.

5 out of 5 stars Great Drawing Book for all levels.......2005-08-05

This is the book for you if you want to learn how to create Drawings using SW. I used Pro/E before and I am new to SW. SW is so much easier to learn and use than Pro/E! The book provides a very logical sequence of events starting from creating a Drawing Template and Sheet Format, then moving into different part drawing views: Broken Isometric, Section, Detail, etc., and then into Assembly drawings with multi sheets.

You are then exposed to Detailing and finally Geometric Tolerancing. The book is well laid out and is easy to follow with the screen shots and its step by step procedure.
