      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Cute - and fun!.......2007-06-11

This book teaches PARENTS really cute little games to play with their baby (4-6 months plus). a must have!

      5 out of 5 stars Young families.......2007-03-08

We work with many families and this book is great for first time moms and young families. It is colorful, easy to read and has the actions that go with the words. We would love to give it to every 1st time mom if we had the resources...

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-09-09

This book was VERY disappointing. Only several cardboard reinforced pages long...certainly NOT worth the price. Had very basic and well know 'baby games' so there was really nothing new. This is one of the disadvantages of ordering a book on-line - although generally I am quite satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Expand Your Repertoire Beyond Pat-a-Cake.......2004-08-04

This is my daughter's favorite book. Since she turned one and we checked it out from the library, she asks for this book every time we recite one of the rhymes. I've finally decided to buy it. The illustrations are beautiful and the games are a fun way to interact with a little one. My daughter loves acting out the games with us and just studying the pictures on her own.

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas !.......2001-11-20

I got this book looking for new ideas of finger plays to do with my two month old. Other than the pat-a-cake and this little piggy standbys all of the others were new to me and this is my third child! The directions were clear and he really loves the activities. The illustrations are cute but not captivating. Once you learn the finger plays you really don't need the book. I would recommend it as a shower gift for a new mother though who would find it full of good ideas for playing with a new baby.

5 out of 5 stars My First Songs (Growing tree).......2005-09-19

The book is excellent. My 2 year son loves to pick a page and have me sing to him. He even joins in. It's great to have all the words and verses to his favorite songs.

            5 out of 5 stars Their choice.......2000-06-24

Let's face it--sometimes we don't know why a particular book is a kid's favorite. That's the case with this book. I would never have guessed it was to become the all-time-favorite book of both my children (1 and 3). They just love it!

4 out of 5 stars You Know the Tunes - - Now Here's the Words!.......2000-06-07

This is quite a mom & dad's helper... you know the tunes but can't remember the verses to "Wheels On The Bus". This is a word book, it doesn't contain the music notes, but they really aren't needed. They are presented with one beautiful color illustration per song with easy-to-read text. Some words are a bit different than I recall (Is it eensy weensy spider or itsy bitsy spider?) but that may just be a regional thing. It is a good parent/child interactive book.

            5 out of 5 stars My Daughter's FAVORITE book!!!.......1998-08-06

"My First Songs" by Jane Manning is Haley's favorite book at the moment. It has to be read (sung) to her by Daddy every night. And she refuses to go to bed until she's heard it. This book is excellent for those parents (like me) who have forgotten all the songs they grew up with. The illustrations are bright and colorful and hold a 16 month old's attention night after night. We've recommended "My First Songs" to all of our friends with small children, and we recommend it to YOU too.

By uniquely using Buddhist teachings, Reinventing the Wheel assesses the personal and communal costs of our global economic and technological commitments. Hershock urges reinvention of the technological "wheel," and, at the same time, acknowledges the need for new forms of practice suited to our rapidly evolving social, political, and economic circumstances. His persuasive presentation urges the skillful spinning of a new "wheel of the dharma."

                  4 out of 5 stars i liked it.......2004-03-24

This book is not an incredibly new critique of western culture, but does have a new take on the root of our problems and a solution: He presents the major problem of modern society as that of a need for control represented by and as technology. His explanation of colonialism is a bit nostalgic but he does make a lot of valid points. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but it does take a little effort to sift through. It helps to read a few times to get his arguments clear in your head, but a lot of it is just examples of control in society and the problems that creates, which is ultimately a neverending cycle (buddhists will recognize this as samsara). Telephones, TVs, jet planes, automobiles, computers, drugs, plastics... technology has become ever more deeply embedded in our lives. Technology is not just a bunch of tools piling up around us, but a pattern of activity that includes us too. Buddhism teaches us that we are actually cross-sections of such patterns of world activity. As technology radically restructures those patterns, it profoundly restructures the deep layers of our being. Many discussions of technology start from the same control-oriented dualistic perspective that gave rise to technology, and are therefore limited to superficiality. Hershock clearly points out how we are caught in a vicious circle, where our efforts to control our experience cut out the very meaningfulness we are searching for. A milestone contribution, demonstrating the vital relevance of Buddhist thought and practice to crucial issues of today.

                  Product Description

This comprehensive reference to TV cartoon shows covers some 75 years. In the decade or so since the first edition, the industry has grown and expanded to previously unimagined heights, thanks in great part to the upsurge of cable TV services catering to animation fans. In the ten-year period from 1993 through 2003, nearly 450 new cartoon series have premiered in the U.S. Alphabetically arranged by title, the book discusses each cartoon show in detail, providing full production credits and offering commentary on such elements as development, characters, style, and the show’s significance in the overall scheme of television animation. The encyclopedia is published as a set of two volumes. Volume 1 includes the preface, introduction, and entries from “A” through “L.” Volume 2 includes entries from “M” through “Z,” the bibliography, and index. Replacement volumes can be obtained individually under ISBN 0-7864-2255-6 (for Volume 1) and ISBN 0-7864-2256-4 (for Volume 2).

3 out of 5 stars Updated -- with NO corrections???.......2007-07-22

This new version of Erickson's 1995 tome rates an illustrated cover (the original had the generic McFarland "denim-ish" look) and, due to the proliferation of animated series of all types since 1993, a division into two volumes, covering over 1000 pages in all. Unfortunately, a number of the mistakes and oversights of the first edition are still present. A couple of the old entries have been updated, but only if a new version of the series has been produced (e.g., the entry for Superman now includes the 90s "Superman: the Animated Series") or if new information about a previously obscure project has come to light. (The lack of corrections may have something to do with the fact that McFarland is a reference publisher; as a result, many of the copies that were sold have been resting peacefully on college library shelves rather than circulating amongst animation fans.) The new entries are well-written, and most of them seem accurate, but Erickson seems less willing to pass judgment on the merits of the series of interest. "Superman: the Animated Series" was easily as ambitious an undertaking as the earlier "Batman" series, yet, while Erickson devotes a lot of space to analyzing what made the latter series so good and so groundbreaking, he contents himself with a bald summary of factual particulars when it comes to the former. I didn't always agree with what Erickson had to say about a series, but it was most entertaining to read through his reasoning. I still think quite highly of Erickson's work and appreciate the effort he put into this revamping, but this new edition falls a little short of what it could have been had the necessary changes been made.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, but get the two volume set........2007-02-28

I received the book today, and was quite impressed with it.

Wish I had the money to buy the two volume set. Looks like that being the next purchase.

I want to fix up a misconception about one of the entries, "Arthur, and the Square Knights of the Round Table".

In this book (and in the book referenced "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons" by Jeff Lenburg) claimed that the show was British.

Sadly, it is as British as a Kangaroo. The show was made in Australia, featuring a cast of actors who were originally from radio, and the cast was able to mimic accents with frightening accuracy (the cast which included John Meillon (who played Walter Reilly in Crocodile Dundee)and John Ewart (who appeared in the feature film, Newsfront))

Hopefully, this will be corrected in a future edition.

If you like learning new software on the subway, Teach Yourself Quark Xpress: Version 4, a modest little paperback, will come in handy. You can carry it with you, reading sections here and there, and then later sit at your computer and follow along with the step-by-step instructions.

Written primarily for beginners, the book follows a slow-paced and intuitive route from creating a new document, working with pages, adding and formatting text, and then on to more complex steps like linking text boxes, adding page numbers, and working with books--all this before even introducing graphic items and images. Such a firm grounding in handling text and typography is important to getting the most out of a premier layout application like Xpress.

Users with some experience in XPress can use the book as a review or for discovering new shortcuts. There may be features you've never conquered, for example, making an index or table of contents, or the intricacies of master pages, all of which are succinctly explained here. There's a convenient appendix with keystrokes for special characters such as the ligature of f and l, which also lists special characters specifically for the Find/Change dialog box and eight different kinds of word spaces.

The writing is clear and uncluttered; it's a bare-bones manual style that can be just the ticket when you just have one question and need the answer fast. There's not much here for intermediate or advanced users. For example, although there is a nice explanation of how to use clipping paths, the subject of setting trapping preferences is only discussed briefly. On the other hand, if the book were much more in depth, you wouldn't be able to read it while hanging from that subway strap. --Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: Elementary instruction in using Quark XPress, including creating documents, working with pages and master pages, working with text boxes and formatting text, working with items and images, using colors, manipulating text to improve readability and appearance, creating books with tables of contents and indexes, and preparing files for printing.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I ever bought!.......2001-01-09

I had always wanted to learn design but had no time or money to invest in classes etc. All I had was an iMac and "Teach yourself Quark Express". Although some reviews don't praise this book, I found it to be informative enough to learn my way around the Quark interface and start designing pages. Because large manuals overwhelmed me- not to mention my optimism about breaking into design was not that high, I settled for this cheap little book. Well I'm happy to say that within about six weeks I landed my first design job in NYC and have since mastered Quark and became very skilled in Photoshop and Illustrator. Just 11 months after reading this book I am now a very experienced and employable designer. I have taken many courses in design since then-but my gratitude goes to the author of "Teach Yourself QuarkXPress"- I never could have done it without this book. I'd like to see the great works of art from those "negative" people who suggest "Quark for Dummies". This is the only Quark book I've ever owned and believe me, anything a certified Quark instructor has ever showed me I had already learned in this book. Maybe the "Dummies" should read it again. This is a real review from a real designer.

2 out of 5 stars Good for real beginners; some flaws.......2000-09-28

This is a superb resource if you have virtually no knowledge of desktop publishing whatsoever, and you wish to learn the basics of Quark Xpress. However, if you already have a basic knowledge of some other desktop publisher, and you wish to learn Quark Express fairly well so that you can get a job in the publishing industry where it is used, this book will only provide limited help.

The book does not discuss what distinguishes Quark Xpress from other publishers, and it does not provided in-depth instruction on the more difficult features of the program. Teach Yourself Quark Xpress spends a great deal of time detailing very basic actions that anyone with minimal computer literacy should already be able to perform, and it then glosses over more complicated matters (such as making indexes and table of contents for books) without providing enough trouble-shooting information and instruction.

Oddly, this book (or at least the copy I received) has several passages containing blank spots, as though the writer meant to go back and add in words, icons, and page numbers later, but forgot. Take this section, for instance, on page 104:

"Merging effects_________________ __________creates a single item where multiple items overlap. _________ creates a single item out of multiple items. _________subtracts an underlaying item from overlaying items. ______ and ________ both create a single item out of multiple items with an aperture where items overlapped."

Such passages are, for obvious reasons, quite unhelpful, and there are more than five. Such poor editing is appalling in an expensive paperback.

Unfortunately, this may be one of very few instructional books on Quark Xpress on the market. And it does provide an easy to understand overview--especially if you are not very serious about learning the program in-depth and you just want to be able to say, "Yes, I am familiar with Quark Xpress." I recommend reading the book while using the QuarkXpress demo. You can get it for free from Quark Xpress, and it will enable you to visually see most of the things the book discusses.

While this book does contain some information which may be useful to, say, comatose goats trying to break into a career in desktop publishing, this book provides no easy way of accessing it. The index and glossary are woefully useless and the book is disorganized and nauseatingly simplistic. If one of your coffee table's legs is a little bit too high, this book may just be perfect for you. For those of you with un-wobbly coffee tables, I suggest the Quark for dummies book. It is a crying shame that one star is the lowest possible rating allowed. I hope I have been successful in dissuading you from purchasing this book, you'll thank me later.

In addition, sometimes you just need one bit of information. Again, this book is the place to search and find it quickly.

                    I highly recommend it.

This is belated I know, but this book helped me a lot even though I was using it to try and figure out Quarkxpress 5.0. It does have a few mistakes but I have never read a computer book that doesn't.

I had checked out several books from the library designed for version 5.0 but their authors all seemed to be using them as an avenue to show off the extent of their knowledge rather than teach. The "For Dummies" book was especially bad. It started out simply but soon I was all in a wad.

This book is simple, step by step, and it has lots of fun projects. My projects didn't always turn out quite right, probably because of the difference in versions, but I got the drift.

I think Quark is a pretty complicated program, anyway. You can't really expect to start off at square one and know it all at the end of just one book. But I learned a lot from this one. Thank you Kate Binder!

I wouldn't recommend this book to my worst enemy. The CD that comes with it doesn't work and the text has so many mistakes that I couldn't even count them all. I found over 20 in the first 4 days of my 14 days of teaching myself QuarkXPress. I spent over a month (Daily 6 hrs a day) and still didn't learn QuarkXPress! The only reason I gave it 1 star is because you can't give it -5 stars.

I took a class in Quark 4 and wanted a book to supplement the instruction, so I purchased this book, (Quark can seem quite difficult when you are beginning to learn about it). I needed something that I could turn to quickly to find out how to do something without wading through pages and pages trying to find it. Sam's Teach Yourself QuarkXPress in 14 Days? -- NOT!

I tried to use this book as a teaching guide for beginnng students. There were a lot of inconsistencies. For instance the instruction would not yield the expected result. The book did not even explain the measurement palette until very late in the chapters and it made assumptions that the user already knew something about Quark. This is not a book for a beginner to desktop publishing.
