Quark Xpress, Version 3.3 (Teach Yourself)

If you like learning new software on the subway, Teach Yourself Quark Xpress: Version 4, a modest little paperback, will come in handy. You can carry it with you, reading sections here and there, and then later sit at your computer and follow along with the step-by-step instructions.Written primarily for beginners, the book follows a slow-paced and intuitive route from creating a new document, working with pages, adding and formatting text, and then on to more complex steps like linking text boxes, adding page numbers, and working with books--all this before even introducing graphic items and images. Such a firm grounding in handling text and typography is important to getting the most out of a premier layout application like Xpress.
Users with some experience in XPress can use the book as a review or for discovering new shortcuts. There may be features you've never conquered, for example, making an index or table of contents, or the intricacies of master pages, all of which are succinctly explained here. There's a convenient appendix with keystrokes for special characters such as the ligature of f and l, which also lists special characters specifically for the Find/Change dialog box and eight different kinds of word spaces.
The writing is clear and uncluttered; it's a bare-bones manual style that can be just the ticket when you just have one question and need the answer fast. There's not much here for intermediate or advanced users. For example, although there is a nice explanation of how to use clipping paths, the subject of setting trapping preferences is only discussed briefly. On the other hand, if the book were much more in depth, you wouldn't be able to read it while hanging from that subway strap. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered: Elementary instruction in using Quark XPress, including creating documents, working with pages and master pages, working with text boxes and formatting text, working with items and images, using colors, manipulating text to improve readability and appearance, creating books with tables of contents and indexes, and preparing files for printing.
Customer Reviews:
Best book I ever bought!.......2001-01-09
Good for real beginners; some flaws.......2000-09-28
The book does not discuss what distinguishes Quark Xpress from other publishers, and it does not provided in-depth instruction on the more difficult features of the program. Teach Yourself Quark Xpress spends a great deal of time detailing very basic actions that anyone with minimal computer literacy should already be able to perform, and it then glosses over more complicated matters (such as making indexes and table of contents for books) without providing enough trouble-shooting information and instruction.
Oddly, this book (or at least the copy I received) has several passages containing blank spots, as though the writer meant to go back and add in words, icons, and page numbers later, but forgot. Take this section, for instance, on page 104:
"Merging effects_________________ __________creates a single item where multiple items overlap. _________ creates a single item out of multiple items. _________subtracts an underlaying item from overlaying items. ______ and ________ both create a single item out of multiple items with an aperture where items overlapped."
Such passages are, for obvious reasons, quite unhelpful, and there are more than five. Such poor editing is appalling in an expensive paperback.
Unfortunately, this may be one of very few instructional books on Quark Xpress on the market. And it does provide an easy to understand overview--especially if you are not very serious about learning the program in-depth and you just want to be able to say, "Yes, I am familiar with Quark Xpress." I recommend reading the book while using the QuarkXpress demo. You can get it for free from Quark Xpress, and it will enable you to visually see most of the things the book discusses.

Perfect when you need the basics quick........2000-03-31
If you need the basics fast, this book is for you. You can build on the knowledge you get in this book. But this is the place to begin.
In addition, sometimes you just need one bit of information. Again, this book is the place to search and find it quickly.
I highly recommend it.

THIS BOOK HELPED ME.......2003-10-02
I had checked out several books from the library designed for version 5.0 but their authors all seemed to be using them as an avenue to show off the extent of their knowledge rather than teach. The "For Dummies" book was especially bad. It started out simply but soon I was all in a wad.
This book is simple, step by step, and it has lots of fun projects. My projects didn't always turn out quite right, probably because of the difference in versions, but I got the drift.
I think Quark is a pretty complicated program, anyway. You can't really expect to start off at square one and know it all at the end of just one book. But I learned a lot from this one. Thank you Kate Binder!

Simplest Things Cannot be Found, Even in The Index!.......2000-01-17
I took a class in Quark 4 and wanted a book to supplement the instruction, so I purchased this book, (Quark can seem quite difficult when you are beginning to learn about it). I needed something that I could turn to quickly to find out how to do something without wading through pages and pages trying to find it. Sam's Teach Yourself QuarkXPress in 14 Days? -- NOT!
