Book Description

There is a mystery about music. On one hand, music making and music listening have occupied a prominent place in every culture since the dawn of recorded history and people everywhere continue to engage in a variety of musical experiences as part of their daily lives. Yet questions about the nature and value of music and its importance as a subject of education remain perplexing to many thinkers and are still hotly debated, even today. As a result, while music has been part of the school curriculum since antiquity, its profound contribution to general education has never been harnessed--until now. What is music? Does music deserve a place in general education? If so, why? Music Matters builds new answers to these basic questions through a wide-ranging examination of music as a diverse human practice. The result is a ground-breaking philosophy of music education that provides critically reasoned perspectives on the nature and significance of performing, listening, musicianship, multiculturalism, creativity, consciousness, curriculum development, and more. Indeed, Music Matters is exceptional for the attention it pays to many aspects of music and education that previous music education doctrine either misses or ignores altogether. Following an incisive critique of past thinking, this important text develops a multidimensional concept of music that explains why music making and listening are unique forms of thinking and unique sources of the most important kinds of knowing that human beings can gain. In a richly detailed narrative that examines a wealth of recent philosophical and psychological research, the author constructs a compelling philosophical foundation that allows teachers to affirm to themselves and others that music deserves a central place in the education of all people. Among the many working ideas of this new philosophy is a distinctive concept of "curriculum-as-practicum" that explains how music educators can fulfill their educational mandate. Invaluable as a core text for courses on foundations of music education or philosophy of music education at both the undergraduate and graduate level, Music Matters provides educators with critically reasoned perspectives on the "why, what, and how" of music teaching and learning, arguing convincingly that music is one of the most vital, dynamic, and practical pursuits in the human repertoire and, therefore, fundamental to the full development of the individual and collective self.

5 out of 5 stars The best resource for the contemporary music educator!.......2005-05-18

Music Matters is a truly revolutionary book. David Elliott was the first person to challenge the "good 'ole boy" status quo developed by Bennett Reimer. The book is blunt and serious, while maintaining the positive, constructivist attitude that is necessary to promote change in our failing music education programs across the country.

I bought Music Matters during my second year of public school teaching in the urban schools of Miami. David Elliott's book single-handedly prevented early music teacher burnout in me. The book revived my damaged and jaded view of the current state of music education in the public schools and provided hope for positive change in the future.

The book is not "easy reading" by any means, but Elliott places discussion questions at the end of each chapter, and the central "praxial" ideas (meaning "to-do") connect each chapter throughout the book. I recommend that the reader take notes and write down critical questions while reading each chapter. It also helps to go back and re-read sections as you mature and develop more insight into your own personal philosophy of music education.

I HIGHLY recommend this book as a first step toward developing and cultivating a post-modern philosophy of music education. Band, Orchestra, Choral, and General Music teachers can all benefit from the ideas presented in this book. One of the great things about Elliott is that he encourages critical, scholarly debate of his ideas. That is something that Reimer and his indoctrinated cohorts have never liked! The idea that musics beyond Western-Classical tradition can be used as a viable curriculum in the classroom is another reason to keep this book handy at all times. Furthermore, Elliott's ideas for apprenticeship and developing a reflective-practice musical curriculum are essential reading to any music educator. I truly believe the ideas Elliott espouses are crucial to the rebuilding and reinforcement of music education programs across the world.

A 5-star rating for a 5-star book and 5-star pedagogue!

5 out of 5 stars brilliant and bold.......2004-07-29

This is not a book simply for educators in music. It is a book for all music thinkers (listeners, performers, composers, teachers). Elliott tackles all aspects of music. He joins both philosophical and practical matters succinctly and because of this, Music Matters is a must for all involved in music. Elliott's expansive thinking and all-encompassing philosophy is much in need -- especially now. It is really a shame that writers such as Swanwick and Reimer have not caught on.

5 out of 5 stars Elliott's philosophy is still the BEST!!.......2004-01-26

I just saw a review here by someone who claims that Elliott's praxial philosophy is 'old' now that Reimer has published his third edition. But this person makes several false statements in his review. First, Elliott's philosophy states that all students should learn ALL forms of music making and listening. Elliott does NOT advocate a performance-only philosophy. This 'performance-only' claim against Elliott is pure rubbish; it is dis-information by Reimer and his un-thinking clones. Second, Reimer says nothing new in his third edition; his philosphy still rests squarely on Langer's old philosophy, which has been rejected by 95% of the world's leading music philosophers, including Kivy, Davies and others.

1 out of 5 stars Elliott's "Old" philosophy of music education.......2003-11-08

Since the publication of Bennett Reimer's third edition of A Philosophy of Music Education: Advancing the Vision, (2003) Elliott's book becomes passe. While Elliott single-mindedly advances music education as performance education, Reimer is inclusive of all the ways people enjoy music, and proposes a music education that is inclusive of the way music really is in our world. His is a brand "new philosophy" of music education, while Elliott's now seems dated and tired indeed. The reviews and ratings of Reimer's book are of the previous edition. Everyone who reads the third edition will find it revelatory -- a new way to conceive what music education has been and needs to be.

5 out of 5 stars A new paradigm.......2002-11-10

Elliott 's book is a major and brilliant achievement. Never has our field seen anything close to this kind of superb thinking, writing, and scholarship. Elliott sets a new standard, far above the weak mush Reimer has always churned out. Still, Elliott gives full credit to Reimer in Music Matters (chp. 2) for Reimer's earlier work in music education philosophy. Elliott's critics conveniently overlook the fact that Elliott gives this credit, let alone how graciously he does it. Elliott's critics also fail to understand what philosophy is: to do Philosophy is to reflect critically on the efforts of other thinkers, past and present. This is exactly what Elliott does on the way to providing a fine alternative to Reimer's restricted aesthetic view; and Elliott does this brilliantly, with excellent logic and clear explanations. In addition, Elliott never attacks Reimer as a person (whereas Reimer is fond of attacking Elliott personally in his MEJ tirades and elswhere).

Book Description

Feasting and fasting rituals were a central facet of social interaction in early medieval Gaul. With the adoption of Christianity in the third and fourth centuries in cosmopolitan centers and in the fifth and sixth centuries in rural communities, clerics faced the challenge of guiding recent converts with little understanding of Christianity beyond the rudimentary catechism necessary for baptism. While priests condemned blatantly pagan celebrations, they could not eliminate the powerful networks sustained by food and drink rituals. Accommodation of existing rites did not, however, represent pagan survivals. Using contemporary saints' lives, canonical legislation, penitentials, theological tracts, monastic Rules and cemeterial remains, Bonnie Effros presents five essays addressing the ways in which clerical authors portrayed rites involving food and drink in their attempts to define membership in religious communities, strengthen their relationships with the laity, highlight gender differences, bring about the healing of the sick and maintain ties to deceased ancestors.

4 out of 5 stars Appetizers Only.......2003-11-10

During the Dark Ages kings and Christians exploited every resource available to gain and institutionalize power. "Creating Community with Food and Drink in Merovingian Gaul" provides some good insights into the importance of food in shaping human relationships, and how customs related to food were engineered to help establish order in Merovingian society.

The subject matter is of general interest but Dr. Effros did not write to a wide audience. This is a minimal book of 5 short essays written in an academic style. The essays end on page 91, followed by 52 pages of footnotes (mostly citations), with the bibliography and index taking the book to 174 pages.

So much is missing from this book! For example, the feasts of Pre-Christians (Romans and Barbarians) and Christians are contrasted in the abstract but never described in any detail. What was on the table? Dr. Effros explains that she didn't write about the food that was eaten or how it was prepared in Merovingian Gaul because "these questions had already been addressed elsewhere more capably than I could have undertaken myself." Yet her footnote directs the reader to multiple sources, none of which address the questions directly.

Prepare for the new CCNP 642-831 CIT Exam with the official test preparation guide

CCNP CIT Exam Certification Guide (CCNP Self-Study) is a comprehensive study tool for preparing for the new CCNP 642-831 CIT exam. This book is the second edition of the best-selling preparation title for the CCNP CIT exam from Cisco Press, also authored by Amir Ranjbar.

Comprehensive coverage of all exam topics ensures readers will arrive at a complete understanding of what they need to master to succeed on the exam. This book follows a logical organization of the CCNP CIT exam objectives, and is written in a modular, small-chapter format that breaks the elements into easy-to-absorb parts. It also contains the other valuable learning elements of an Exam Certification Guide from Cisco Press that ensure concept comprehension and retention. These include pre- and post-chapter quizzes, foundational review sections, scenario-based exercises, and a CD-ROM testing engine with more than 200 questions, including simulation-based questions like on the actual exam.

The organization of this edition has been radically altered to align with the new CIT objectives that focus on troubleshooting methodologies to resolve problems at the Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, and Application layers of the OSI Model.

Good book on the subject and great for reference at work.
Amazon was great though, the shipping was fast and at the door when promised which meant a lot because I was under pressure.

                  1 out of 5 stars Useless book.......2006-12-05

This is an absolutely useless book to prepare for this exam. The topics do not cover troubleshooting for protocols like EIGRP, BGP, OSPF etc that appear in the exam. Most of the information is being repeated over and over again in various chapters. I am not sure how Cisco Press can release such a useless book. It is better to consult braindump websites rather than reading this book. If you prepare for the exam using this book, you are wasting time.

2 out of 5 stars This book is way too light for this exam.......2006-07-13

The methodology of the troubleshooting process is the easy part. This book would have been much better if it had broken down the troubleshooting sections for each layer and given you some concrete ideas about the most common things you might see. Definitely, an extensive treatment of debug output with explanations of what to look for would have been good. Bottom line, read the book so you know the methodology, but get another source because this one won't do it.

1 out of 5 stars Almost no relation to actual exam.......2005-12-27

Cisco should be embarassed to call this book 'official self-study test preparation'. Perhaps it should say 'Some basic thoughts'... The relation to the exam I just took was nowhere to be found. I think this book prep'd me for 1 or 2 questions out of 64. I'm totally disgusted. CiscoPress has lost all credibility in my mind. This book is a discrace.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource for passing CIT exam.......2004-09-28

To summarize, this book is focused on troubleshooting methodology. It goes over procedures, guidelines, and methods. It is not intended as a specific blow by blow review of troubleshooting technology - you are assumed to already have this information through studying and job experience. The author is straightforward in his writing and does a good job of boiling down the information, and physically it is considerably thinner than the other study guides.

Unlike every other Cisco Press book I've read for the CCNP exam, this book is not plagued with editing errors. Finally.

The included CDROM is adequate, but there are at least three very obvious errors I counted.

There really isn't anything wrong with this book, but I gave it four stars instead of five because sometimes it wasn't as clear as it could have been (solving a problem in the Gathering Symptoms stage? I thought that happened at the Correct the Problem stage). Another reviewer thought Chapter 13, which covers scenarios, was valuable but I didn't get much use from it as it was basically rote repetition of earlier chapters with no additional detail.

I am assuming that people are buying this book to pass an exam, so the rest of my review focuses on how the book relates to it.

Essentially it covers all the areas Cisco outlines for the exam. If you know the material in this book, you should be able to pass. There are certainly exam questions that were not in the book, but solidly being able to answer book covered questions will keep you from failing. As with every Cisco test, you will be asked a few questions that are not in the book. Cisco makes it a point to make their certifications more rigorous than simply memorizing a slew of chapters without having to think.

If you are seeking certification, take this test last as the author assumes you have taken the other certifications already. You will appreciate that the preparation length for this book is much shorter than the others. I read the entire book, took notes, and prepared for a Monday exam over the preceding Saturday and Sunday. Any other test would have taken me weeks of preparation.

I am now a CCNP! Warm wishes and good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Not Bad For An Exam Cram.......2004-11-18

Typically I don't go for Exam Crams as they are the basic needs for an exam passing quest. However I have taken Sean Odom's classes before and he is a great instructor. Read the book, passed the exam with a 913 today. I base my reviews on how good I passed the test and I always seem to pass when I read Sean's books or take his classes.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-10-29

I found this to be a very good book. It covered all the needs of the exam. I read the previous posters and am concerned that those leaving reviews really don't know what they are talking about. The fact that the people stated other authors names leads me to believe they are the other authors. Any how, I found this book to cover every question I had on the exam. I passed with a 992.

1 out of 5 stars This book sucks! Its a shame there is not a "no stars&q.......2004-08-02

This book sucks! Its a shame there is not a "no stars" rating.
In my opinion this book is a garentee to failure. It contains information on the old CIT exams, with one third of the current Cisco CIT topics not just missing but misleading. I bought this book, sat the exam and failed, the first exam I have ever failed (except for my driving test when I was 15).
This book is a complete waste of your money!!
Exam Cram, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

2 out of 5 stars Read this book and fail the CIT Exam.......2004-03-31

This book is for the old CIT exam and does not cover anything related to the new CIT Exam. There is no one to one match between this book and Amir ranjbar's CISCO Press Book. The five chapters of CISCO Book that comprises 40% of the exam questions are not even covered in this book.

Do not use this book if you want to pass the CIT exam. Use Cisco Press Book by Amir Ranjbar.
