Book Description
Music in East Africa is one of several case-study volumes that can be used along with Thinking Musically, the core book in the Global Music Series. Thinking Musically incorporates music from many diverse cultures and establishes the framework for exploring the practice of music around the world. It sets the stage for an array of case-study volumes, each of which focuses on a single area of the world. Each case study uses the contemporary musical situation as a point of departure, covering historical information and traditions as they relate to the present. Visit www.oup.com/us/globalmusic for a list of case studies in the Global Music Series. The website also includes instructional materials to accompany each study. Music in East Africa introduces readers to the various ways in which historical music traditions and present-day musical performances either collide, fuse, or remain mutually exclusive in contemporary East Africa. Through descriptions of performances and case studies that detail the lives of individual musicians, Gregory Barz shows how people in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania create, dance to, and interact with traditional East African music. Focusing on specific contexts in which music is integrated into the everyday lives of individuals and communities, Music in East Africa considers the significance of music for people as they negotiate the world around them. It looks at the defining principle of musical performance in East Africa--how drumming (and the playing of other musical instruments), singing, dancing, and drama are deeply connected to traditional cultures. The book highlights the importance of individual musicians as specialized members of communities and describes the role of musical performances in such social systems as popular entertainment and religious rituals. It also shows how traditional East African music and performance has responded to modernization, colonization, commercialism, and nationalism. Featuring vivid illustrations and eyewitness accounts of performances, Music in East Africa incorporates numerous activities that encourage readers to engage with the music. The book is packaged with a 70-minute CD containing examples of the music discussed in the text.

Book Description
Considering the work of such artists as Madonna, George Clinton, U2, Elvis Costello, and Nirvana, the contributors deftly combine the rigors of scholarship with the energy of rock journalism to provide an analysis at once critical, contextualized, and enthusiastic. While a number of scholars have recently turned their attention to rock and pop music, most of their work has focused on providing sweeping cultural contexts for its popularity rather than exploring the music itself. Now, in Reading Rock and Roll, Kevin Dettmar and William Richey have gathered a wealth of erudite, original, and clever writings that perform close readings of rock music -- often with surprising results.
The authors in this volume view rock and roll as having had affinities with postmodernism from its inception. With its mongrel pedigree -- drawing on blues, folk, R and B, and bluegrass -- and its relation to mass media and high-tech modes of production, rock music has been self-conscious and full of irony from the beginning. These essays regularly call attention to the allusiveness and intertextuality of rock and roll, whether it is Kurt Cobain undermining the Beatles, M. C. Hammer stealing from Rick James's "Super Freak," or U2's use of Johnny Cash's legendary voice.
From a careful examination of the roles of addictions and female sexuality in the remakings of Courtney Love and Madonna, to the politics of George Clinton's uses and abuses of language, to the referencing of Elvis Costello in two recent novels and the use of 1970s rock in several recent film soundtracks, these essays are as varied as the artists they consider. Informal and theoretically informed, Reading Rock and Roll is an important investigation of the music that more than any other has defined our century.

Book Description
Mystery, rather than “problem,” provides the context that the cultural ethnographer best uses to approach the experience of both the living and the writing of culture. In this work, H. L. Goodall, Jr., continues his discussion of the cultural ethnographer as detective through an investigation of what he calls the “rock n roll mystery.”
Using Bakhtin’s notion of “Carnival,” Goodall positions rock n roll as an important aspect of the American cultural experience using its lyrics and rhythm as a force of resistance to the dominant bureaucratic order. He argues that interpretive ethnography, where sentences use rhythms and emotions along with words to construct a work, parallels rock n roll in its creation of multiple voices struggling for creative and interpretive presence and space in the text. As there is no privileged text in the social life of rock n roll, there is no privileged voice in the writing of interpretive ethnography. It is, instead, a reading and writing method within the field of communication and the field of cultural studies that challenges the “existing wisdom.”
Goodall invites the reader to join him in the role of the detective who confronts, enters, and then participates in the mysteries of living. Through the use of his interpretive method, Goodall is able to move under the skin of experience to disclose the relationship among self, other(s), and context, an understanding only achieved by “going beneath the often cosmetic surfaces of cultural traffic to where symbols mingle with the driven stuff of life.” Because the “stuff of life” is laid out on the pages of this book, Goodall’s text is as compelling as a good novel and in some ways more intimate.

Great as either a historical document or a modern criticism.......2001-02-24
Written in 1971 when television was even worse than it is now (mostly because there were less channels so that one good show out of a thousand was even harder to find) Harlan Ellison's columns for the Free Press were some of the most dead-on impressions of televions - the business, the message, the medium - ever. From political commentaries to the muted lives of television executives and their "helpful suggestions" to youth-oriented programming, Ellison took no prisoners and never let up on his criticism of an industry that made him prosperous. For anyone whose ever seen him on Politically Incorrect telling a conservative radio host to shove it and cheered this is one of those books that you just need to read.
This is the second book of columns and the only one that I read. Highlights include a discussion on a new fuel additive that was supposed to save the environment but didn't really do much, a disgusted commentary of children's beauty pagents (which were televised at the time), criticism of the new television series (dismissal of The Mod Squad as an overreaching appeal to youth market, praise of All in the Family, praise of a bunch of shows that never lasted, attacks on more shows that also died out), vivisection of the treatment for a case worker show, and discussion of The Young Lawyers complete with a full screenplay and a couple of columns about getting it on the air and then hating the final product. The most hilarious one would have to be his story of being a contestant on the Dating Game and promising the poor woman that as bachelor # 3 his perfect date would be to go to the landfill and shoot rats.
Sometimes the criticism gets to be too much and you wonder if there is anything that Harlan Ellison likes. Sometimes he's a little too blinded by his own sense of right and wrong to give anyone else a chance. But at heart this is a man who still has a capacity to be disappointed in the human race and what the human race puts up as entertainment. While reading Ellison gives you the feeling of reading a Pit Bull's memoirs, you can't dismiss him.
The only caveat is that his script sucks. Maybe it was just the time and the restrictions that he worked in, but this is the man who did the quintessential Star Trek and whose original script still surpassed the television version. But it's one of those lawyer having trouble adjusting to his ex-girlfriend's drug habit and user-ways. It seemed to be a waste of pages, and even though the televised version was much worse, the stuff that he was upset about being cut - wasn't that great. It was better than most television scripts but that's not saying much.
And if upon reading this book you want to shoot your television, Mr. Ellison has succeeded. However, remember that there is the happy ending of Ellison being the consultant for Babylon 5 - a show that never compromised to the networks and became the greatest science fiction series of all time (unless of course you note that it's spinoff Crusade also never compromised and got cancelled by TNT and is still in Limbo). After reading this book you might want to read J. Michael Straczynski's book on screenwriting which gives a slightly less disgusted view of television.

Customer Reviews:
Fails in achieving goals........2006-06-30
I've earned two CS degrees and worked with SNMP and TCP for years. The problem with the book is that it is written by pompus insiders. SNMP is one of the worst standards used on the internet. You could teach a course on how such a rudimentary functionality was obfuscated by impenetrable terminology and poor implementation choices (ASN1/BER for example).
What is desperately needed in understanding SNMP is someone who knows what a disaster it is and tries to help bridge the terminology gaps. Unfortunately, the authors actually believe that the terminology and implementation were a good idea. They can't bring themselves to say "You know what the rest of the world calls an array? Well, we decided to call them 'columnar objects'"
The most useful part of the book was learning of the available SNMP parsers, 'smicng' and 'mosey' in an appendix. But now that I've told you, there is no reason to buy this book.
A good reference manual.......2004-07-29
Let's not kid ourselves, SNMP MIBs are messy and needlessly confusing. Most of this confusion stems from the fact that there are many ways to do the same thing. This book helps you identify the various ways of doing something so that you can make informed decisions.
I find this book to be a well organized reference about MIB design and SNMP at the protocol level. It assumes the reader already has some understanding of the topic.
If you are new to MIB design, I suggest that you check the web first to get a basic understanding. Note that this book is not geared toward SNMP network administration.
SNMP MIBs is an essential reference work.......2003-10-21
As co-chair of the IETF's SNMPv3 working group (the group that defines SNMP), I am constantly asked questions about how to implement some detail of a MIB, or to act as the authority in settling a dispute over the way somebody has implemented a MIB, ot to guide the empoyees in my company about organizing our enterprise MIB. This book, more than any other book I own, provides me with solid reference material about MIBs and SMIv2, and it is the first book I use to find the answers I need.
Waste of money.......2003-07-08
I bought this book based on information provided by the reviews here. To be honest, this book is outdated, confusing, and probably a sales pitch for the so-called SMICng tool the authors had developed. I wish I could return the book and spend the money somewhere else.
The definative book on SNMP MIBs.......2002-09-04
This book is the best book I've read on SNMP MIBs. The author really knows his stuff. Most books on SNMP don't cover MIBs in enough detail. This book is a must have for any MIB designer. The author covers all the pesky little details that you need to cover.
