Braunbehrens' Mozart etc........2003-08-22
Braunbehrens' book is a well written account of Mozart and the intellectual, political, economic and cultural milieu that existed during the ascendant part of his creativity. Braunbehrens' is not the first Mozart biography I have read that explores these aspects of Mozart, nor is this book as lavishly illustrated as others. However, for my amatuer self, it the best written and most accessible; scholarly, but not academically dry or pedantic.
Braunbehrens dispelled for me the myth which has come down to amateurs since his death that Mozart was an unrelentingly tragic, Romantic and impoverished figure. Certainly that myth is not descernible in his music. Braunbehrens erudite insights have enhanced my listening experience, and have given me greater appreciation of this man of the Enlightenment.

Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs.......2007-10-01
We were looking for a book to help prepare our 4-year old daughter for the death of her grandmother from Cancer. This book was recommended to us. We first checked it out from the library and had to renew. It helped us start the discussion of death with our daughter. She related to Tomie being 4 and his love for his Nana's. We bought this book because she did not want to return it to the library. She is so happy to have her very own copy.
Love This Book!.......2007-03-25
I had read this book several years ago so when my 87 yr old mother died last month, I bought a new Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs book for my grandson who is 10 yrs old. He told me that he will keep that book forever because it was so sweet and means everything to him now that his great-Nana is gone to heaven.
A book for every child...outstanding and very much needed!.......2007-02-01
From it's title and the cover, I wouldn't have picked up this book. There's nothing that "jumped out" at me. It's about grandmas, but so what - lots of books are.
FORTUNATELY, it was included on my son's [...]reading list. What we discovered is the most sensitive rendering of a young child's experience in coping with the death of a loved one.
If we read only one of dePaola's books, and this was it, I would say he is a genius in children's literature!
MOSTLY A BOOK ABOUT LOVE.......2006-09-03
This work was pretty impressive and this comes from one who is not overly fond of the "death and dying" genre of children's literature. This is a story of a young mans relation ship with his great-grandmother and grandmother and the love between them. The book is of course about the loss of a loved one, one who has been apart of your life for as long as you can remember. The subject is delt with in a loving and sensitive way. There are no real tears here, no real sadness, rather a justifiable feeling of loss at first, but then understanding. This is a situation faced by most children from time to time and in fact all of us have probably gone through this sort of expierence. This book is quite useful in talking to children about the subject of death and approaches it in a very positive way. This illustrations are great and the text is simple, to the point, and follows the illustrations quite well. This is one of those books that I think either the parent or teacher could well read with the child as is is bound to bring up some good questions. Recommend this one highly.
Wonderful!.......2006-03-22
This book by Tomie dePaola is wonderful! It evokes a bygone era. I defy anyone with a heart to read this book without some kleenex nearby.

Delightful, but not comprehensive.......2007-06-01
This is a lovely little book full of period recipes and great illustrations. However, I find that it omits many food and drink items mentioned in the show -- for instance, simple things like hot posset and barley water or "infamous" foods from the series, such as Mrs. Bridges' ill-fated plum cake with almonds sat on by Gregory Wilmot. Also, I was expecting something that corresponded to the series a bit more closely. I would like to have seen, for instance, a section devoted to the dinner Mrs. Bridges prepared for King Edward VII, with a reproduction of the menu cards from the dinner. Obviously those who created this book simply gathered Edwardian recipes and didn't consult the production designers of the show.
Historical and Informative.......2002-04-04
If you wish to get a glimpse of everyday life in a typical upper class English Manor during the turn of the 20th century, THIS is the book for you: The recipes are truly authentic, bringing history alive!

The Late Starters' Club
ASIN: 0595396151 |
Book Description
Raised by nannies and governesses in an English country house where 'you practically needed a passport' to travel from the nursery wing to the drawing room or the maids' sitting room, the author portrays with uncritical candor and humour a vanished world of privilege and isolation. We meet an alarming grandmother with 'tomb breath and eyes flecked with blood and malice', witness the near execution of a village enemy, share the author's passion for animals, her suspicion that her flamboyant godfather may in fact be her father, suffer the torments of boarding school and of first love, and wonder with her on her wedding night if the Duke of Windsor could really have given up the throne of England 'for this.'
"If nostalgia is your thing, I recommend you to read this unique, hilarious insight into the Upstairs Downstairs goings-on in Diana Fassino's riveting, intensely personal account of upper class English country life during WWII."
John Whitney. Director Sagitta Productions. Creator of Upstairs Downstairs.
"Diana Fassino's endearing English wit enchanted me from cover to cover."
Betsy Pearson, artist and syndicated columnist

Thank you, Diana Fassino!.......2007-07-24
When the Cat Had My Tongue - A wonderfully delicious book - deliciously amusing and witty. And utterly amazing: when you think that the times described are "only" a few decades back in the past... sounds like Diana grew up on a totally different planet and yet, that was England too. I'm impatiently looking forward to the next volume!
When the Cat Had My Tongue: A Very English Memoir.......2007-01-10
WE loved this book!
Very clevor writing.....and amusing!!
Paints a very colorful look at life in the English countryside, surrounded by nannies, plenty and such!!
Quick good fun, and easy to read.....
Can hardly wait for her sequel!
Funny, witty and lovably quirky---irresistible in fact!.......2006-11-18
If you are English or an Anglophile (and even if you're not, you grouch), you will adore this dizzy account of growing up in a privileged, highly eccentric family in the England that was in the 30s... When the Cat Had my Tongue is written with great charm. I heard about it through a friend who sent me a copy and bought several to give for Christmas but have parted with some already, to sick friends who needed cheering up or for birthday treats. You don't need to be a Brit to warm to this book--DF is a natural writer and breezy humor and outrageous facts delivered with offhand panache make this a read that deserves good word of mouth. Try it, you'll like it!
When the Cat had My Tongue: A Very English Memoir.......2006-09-21
A beautiful memoir filled with English humor takes the reader into a privileged Nottingham Country Life after World War II, into a way of like that has disappeared. The setting is in the vicinity of Sherwood Forest and it's good to hear a story other than Robin Hoods! Beautifully illustrated by Diana Fassino. A page turner!
Looking forward to the sequel!

Book Description
The best and least expensive way to add between 50 and 100 percent to the living space in many homes is by expanding downward into an unfinished basement. Like an unfinished addition, the basement is already covered and enclosed, ready for the simple steps outlines in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for its size.......2006-09-30
This book was the perfect book for someone who had done remodeling within single rooms, but had never completely built rooms from scratch. The order of chapters is a bit odd. I would have done it in the order you build it: floor, walls, ceiling.
It will not teach you how to exactly how to install electricity, although it is covered. It will not teach you exactly how to install plumbing, although it is covered. It will not teach you exactly how to do framing, although it comes close. What it does do is explain how all of those skills come together in the basement, what the likely mistakes are you could make, and how to get a handle on such a large project.
The only book I ever returned.......2000-01-31
I can't be totally negative about this book. It is well written and even gives a very good description of how to install dry wall tape. But that's about it. Unless the reader is a total novice, this book will add nothing to ones knowledge of how to finish a basement - it is much too basic to be of any help to anyone contemplating doing such a job themselves.
Interesting book but not a "HOW-TO" book.......1999-05-31
This book is informative but is NOT a reader friendly "how-to" book. I bought it to finish my basement and now I'm going to have to buy another which will actually tell me. I've got to connect my air-conditioner to the basement and the book doesn't even mention an A/C, it only mentions heaters. Word to the wise, shop around before you buy a book about finishing a basement. This one doesn't so i gave it one star.
Not the only book you're going to need........1999-04-15
I have no experience with remodeling, and have decided to finish my basement. I bought this book hoping it would show me how to do everything from framing to finishing. This book, however, gives general ideas, but not too many specifics. For example, at one point it says you may need to lay a vapor barrier down, and tells you to put on two coats of bitumen product and then a vapor barrier over it - it does not, however, describe in detail how to do this, i.e. how do you cover the whole floor/wall with the barrier without any gaps? Another chapter, the one on running the electricity, starts off by saying one should hire a contractor - not what I wanted to see. Last example, on framing it doesn't show how to frame windows. Anyway, a good start, however you'll need other books for the specifics.
A book of helpful explanations on remodeling!!!.......1997-11-16
I have recently read the book The Basement Book: Reclaiming the Wasted Space in your Basementby Thomas Carpenter, Jeff Taylor, Roberta Cooke, Brad Sneed, and Tom Carpenter. I thought the book did an exceptional job in explaining the work in remodeling wasted space in your home to make it useful. I would have never even thought that my basement could look the way it now does for the low cost and work that I put into it. The book shows methods of remodeling in simple easy to follow steps that can be read and understood by almost anyone. Also, you can Make money, as I now do by renting the space out to other people. Overall, I would recomend this book to anyone who has space that doesn't get used..... Why not make some money off it??? -Chris J. F.
Customer Reviews:
Vague description doesn't help the true Up/Down fan.......2007-06-01
This is in reality a novelization of the second series. The copy I bought is in great shape, so no complaints there, but it certainly isn't what I expected to see when I opened the package. Not sure if this is Amazon's fault or the sellers for being vague. I suppose it would be best to research the ASIN thoughoughly.
Book Description
The study of type systems for programming languages now touches many areas of computer science, from language design and implementation to software engineering, network security, databases, and analysis of concurrent and distributed systems. This book offers accessible introductions to key ideas in the field, with contributions by experts on each topic.
The topics covered include precise type analyses, which extend simple type systems to give them a better grip on the run time behavior of systems; type systems for low-level languages; applications of types to reasoning about computer programs; type theory as a framework for the design of sophisticated module systems; and advanced techniques in ML-style type inference.
Advanced Topics in Types and Programming Languages builds on Benjamin Pierce's Types and Programming Languages (MIT Press, 2002); most of the chapters should be accessible to readers familiar with basic notations and techniques of operational semantics and type systems -- the material covered in the first half of the earlier book.
Advanced Topics in Types and Programming Languages can be used in the classroom and as a resource for professionals. Most chapters include exercises, ranging in difficulty from quick comprehension checks to challenging extensions, many with solutions.
