5 out of 5 stars This is a "must have" book for composers and theorists alike.......1999-09-23

MODAL AND TONAL COUNTERPOINT from Josquin to Stravinsky, by Harold Owen, is an absolutely terrific publication that creates a wonderful "hands-on" approach to this seemingly mysterious art form which, from this composer's perspective, remains an essential part of any musicians development. It is a beautifully arranged study, compact, but amply supplied with intriguing assignments and wonderful examples from the masters, including a number of the author's own.

A superb overview for undergraduate and graduate students alike, it effectively connects the "modern" musician to the very roots of our art. Serious composers, theorists, and performers, should not miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing and creative approach to teaching counterpoint........1999-09-23

"Modal and Tonal Counterpoint" by Harold Owen is a book that all teachers of counterpoint, theory, and composition, should have at their disposal. The book is unique in covering counterpoint from the 16th to the 20th century. I teach at a four-year college, and I often pull the book out during composition lessons to demonstrate a variety of things: species counterpoint, 18th century counterpoint, serial technique and stylistic traits of Stravinsky, Bartók, and Hindemith. I particularly enjoy the way each chapter begins with (often complete) musical examples followed by a discussion of the examples and their relevancy to the chapter topic. I do have to admit a bias -- I studied composition and counterpoint with Hal at the University of Oregon, so I have a personal connection to the material. Hal is a fantastic teacher, a consummate musician versed in many styles, and a very practical and down to earth person. This book reflects all of those traits, especially his practical approach to teaching counterpoint. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars This is really a terrific book........1999-05-11

I teach at a small liberal arts college, and I used this book for the first time last year. I had more success with it than with any other counterpoint text I've ever used. The basic plan, which is to show real music, disucss the salient features, and then to draw from them the issues one needs to proceed to writing, is an old and simple one, but sadly, seldom executed well. In this case, though, the examples are wonderful, the discussions clear and insightful, and the exercises well conceived, both for beginners and advanced students. A real plus is that it is the only book I have ever encountered or heard about that discusses counterpoint in the 16th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. I used it as a one-semester text, and was forced to leave some things out. I was pleased, though, for my students to have this material in their libraries for future reference. It would make a fabulous full-year text as well.

    Book Description

Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities is an interdisciplinary project that weaves ethnographic interviewing with the analysis of texts and material culture to study the intersection of gayness with Latinidad. Unlike other academic treatments of the subject matter, it grounds its argument in an ethnoracial context and takes as point of departure that what needs to be studied explained is gayness not Latinidad. The book argues that gayness is a social formation structured by the racial distinction between blackness and whiteness in the United States and that, as such, the formation gayness is not racially or nationally innocent. Thus, Latinidad, thoroughly shaped by mythologies of racial syncretism, provides a perfect contrast in teasing out the racial undergirding of American gayness. Ultimately Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities claims that the so-called conflict between Latino identity and gayness is not the result of traditional values in Latino cultures ( a played out euphemism for retrograde) but an ethnoracial conflict in as much as the status of gayness does not simply regulate sexual but ethnoracial life as well.

    Book Description

Understanding Tolowa Histories develops a multi-leveled historical inquiry of the Native Tolowa of Northwestern California. The Tolowa were displaced and nearly destroyed in the nineteenth century. Since then, they have struggled to reclaim their collective identity and language and are now re-emerging as a cultural and political group.

Presenting a wide-ranging analysis of ethnographic, linguistic and historical materials, James Collins explores the linguistic and political dynamics of place-claiming and expropriation as well as the relation between otherness and subjugation. He shows the role of such discourse in the ongoing controversies about tradition and identity in Native and non-Native America and establishes the place of the Tolowa and Native California in the larger pattern of US/Indian history.

    5 out of 5 stars I now understand.......2001-02-01

My wife is of Tolowa descent and I have found this book to be a fascinating read. Over the years, I have been quite puzzled, and intrigued, by what I interpreted to be the quirky behaviors, of my wife and family, such as: refusing to talk about the past; only using the native tongue to scold children and family pets; embarrassment on being identified as an Indian; an easy acceptance of the appearance of poverty even when they have good incomes; in-laws jokingly offering to bring old cars and other junk to the house so that we would look more Indian; a fascination verging upon obsession for poaching fish, game, and firewood; and, a general reluctance to do anything in a legal manner when other options are available.

This book has helped me tremendously in understanding my Tolowa kin and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to learn about the present-day Tolowa people. As a benefit, the book briefly covers traditional culture and language -- for which a previous reviewer regrettably found great fault for its lack of detail. However, one only has to reread the title to see that the focus of this work is not traditional culture and language, but rather, how real people, whose assimilation into the American culture only appears to be complete, cope with living in two cultures.

Where else in America do the young men quietly slip out of a warm house full of family, food, and friends to illegally fish for salmon they could easily afford to buy because the fish and game wardens are, as they say, "never out on Thanksgiving"? So, to Mr. Collins I say: "Well done."

    5 out of 5 stars I was pleased........1999-08-10

Contrary to the previous reader, I found this book both interesting and accessible. It presents a small Native California group, the Tolowa, in an historical narrative that explains who they were before Americans settled California (and Oregon), how they were changed by conquest, and how they have survived. It does not write in arcane detail about the traditional culture, but it does provide considerable amounts of information organized into an intelligent argument. Unlike many traditional anthropological studies, it doesn't stint the periods after the Northwest was settled by Americans, that is, contemporary history. Although it is not a linguistic book, it presents a clearly-written and detailed argument about language, place, and identity, and the final chapter has a long discussion of how Tolowa efforts to preserve their native language have been part of cultural persistence. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Tolowa, in an accessible history of Native Californians and Native Americans as part of the broader currents of U.S. History, or in a sensitive discussion of the politics of identity and why it matters. But be sure to buy the paperback, the hardback is way overpriced.

    2 out of 5 stars I was disappointed........1998-09-16

I am an avid reader and collector of ethnological and cultural writings of the Pacific NW as well as being a native of the region. This book lacks the scholarship and detail necessary for a definitive work about the Tolowa people. It is too ambitious. It also follows the pattern of prescribed Anthropology in ignoring the fact that U.S. State boundaries are artificial in terms of culture. Oregon native cultures are as closely related to the Tolowa as California native cultures. In the linguistics section there is not enough information. This book is simply too thin to really say anything important. I also think the editing and writing could have used a few more drafts. For anyone doing research on the Tolowa, I can not recommend this book.

    Book Description

Popular usage equates hegemony with dominance–a meaning far from Antonio Gramsci’s original concept where hegemony appears as a contested culture that meets the minimum needs of the majority while serving the interests of the dominant class.

This text is the first to present cultural hegemony in its original form–as a process of consent, resistance, and coercion. Hegemony is illustrated with examples from American history and contemporary culture, including practices that represent race, gender, and class in everyday life.

U.S. cultural hegemony depends in part on how well media, government, and other dominant institutions popularize beliefs and organize practices that promote individualism and consumerism. Corporate dominance and market values reign only through the consent of the majority, which, for the time being - finds material, political, and cultural benefit from existing social relations. As deep social contradictions undermine brittle hegemonic relations, the subordinate majority - including blacks, women, and workers will seek a new cultural hegemony that overcomes race, gender, and class inequality.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary reading for social justice activists........2004-08-13

This book provides, first, a detailed survey of the history and theory behind the concept of hegemony, and then illustrates its relevance to our understanding of race, gender, class, and social struggle. Meticulously documented, exceptionally well-organized, and passionately concerned with social justice, Cultural Hegemony in the United States is highly recommended to students, activists, and academics bored with keeping it all in the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Undergraduate Introductory Text.......2002-11-19

This is an excellent, easily digestable introduction to the complex concept of cultural hegemony. The authors present a straightforward but informative overview of the subject, including a review of the important thinkers in the field (like Gramsci, Althusser and Stuart Hall). I used this text in an undergraduate course and it was well received by my students...it's a bit pricey but worth it.

      Book Description

"Cultural hegemony theory" is a branch of political sociology that concerns the way in which political sociology is transmitted. Democracy Upside Down weaves together, for the first time, the central arguments and the most important threads of empirical work on the theory of cultural hegemony in the U.S. Whereas most research on political socialization concludes that it is unclear exactly where the most cogent influences on political learning lie, this volume focuses upon the "top-down" process of political learning: the extent to which elites can impose their ideology on masses by domination of various sources of political ideas. In addition, liberalism-or the ideology of elites according to hegemony theory-and the socializing agents through which it can be imposed is discussed.

The Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) existed during the Cold-War and gathered prominent intellectuals to oppose the violence, oppression and threat to freedom posed by Soviet Communism. Adopting a Gramscian perspective, this work examines the links between politics and culture on the international level and provides an analysis and history of the CCF.

This book is for die hard fans only. Lets face it, Magical Mystery Tour has some great songs, but the film plays like a bad acid trip. And maybe it was! Brian Epstein had recently died and the Beatles were managing themselves. Tony Barrow takes you "behind the scenes" of this disjointed film. True fans of the group will enjoy the book.

Tony Barrow has captured this one-of-a-kind extravaganza which, despite its age, still remains fresh in the minds and hearts of true and new Beatles fans. How could he, or indeed anyone know the impact of this piece of work, so ahead of its time, even now. Angie McCartney

4 out of 5 stars You're Either On The Bus or You're Off The Bus.......2000-02-07

Full of great insider info on how the Beatles managed to create a masterpiece of psychedelic cinema despite poor planning, total chaos and a complete lack of directing experience. The book does much to show just how brilliant the Fabs were, that they could basically take a camera and an idea and create a film that's just now getting the recognition and critical kudos it deserved 30+ years ago. Mr Barrow writes a cool deliberate prose and successfully captures the mood of a long-gone era when inventiveness meant more than big budgets. Full of great pictures as well, most never-before published. It's a fairly short read, but focused, and totally entertaining. Buy it and revisit a time when there was still such a thing as "Beatle magic."

            Book Description

Overview: This text will be the first to present an object-oriented methodology from the outset for beginning Systems Analysis and Design students. It is the first book to introduce object-oriented methods without relying on classical methods to introduce key concepts or without requiring students to know Java or C++. It will presume no knowledge whatsoever about process modeling or data modeling. The widely used UML notation (unified modeling language) will be used throughout the book for all diagrams and model renderings. The key benefit to this approach is that it makes the course easier to teach and learn since many students come to this course with limited backgrounds having only taken one introductory MIS course. Also, this approach is appealing because object-oriented methodology is widely used in industry.

            Review
It's been a long time since I've sat in a classroom learning something new. I'm used to getting the latest book on a subject and doing it myself. So it's unusual that I would end up with a textbook on a technical subject that I am using for self-education. That's the situation I find myself in with this book.

Introduction To Object-Oriented Design And Analysis is designed to for use with a beginning course on the subject. So right away, you can expect the material to be presented in a formal, academic fashion. The author deliberately spends comparatively little time on introductory material and gets to the meat of the subject so that the reader can start to get some hands-on experience. Each chapter states the learning objectives up front, and ends with a recap of key terms and additional references. There are also review questions for the chapter, as well as problems to be solved. Scattered throughout the chapters are "Just In Case You Wanted To Know" sidebars that relate the subject being discussed to real-life situations. There are plenty of diagrams and illustrations to aid your understanding. There are also two case studies that are built upon throughout the book so that the reader can follow an entire project of OO analysis and design from start to finish. Finally, there is a CD included in the book that has a tool called ArgoUML that can be used to create your UML design diagrams.

I personally would recommend this book to someone wanting to learn more about OO analysis and design. If you are trying to make the transition to OO programming (such as with J2EE), you'll need to have a good grasp of this material. J2EE is not a rapid application development environment, and you need to have a solid system design in place before you start your coding. This book will give you the skills and tools you require to get there. It is a serious approach to learning, so if you prefer a lighter approach to a new subject, you should probably look for something a little different than what you'll find here.

            Conclusion

This is a book that will appeal to those who like a more academic style for their learning. If you take the time to answer the questions and follow the examples, you'll come away with an excellent understanding and grasp of the subject.
