Expensive. I purchased this book as a text for an undergrad class at ASU. Very comprehensive. If it was not required for the class, I would not have paid this price.

            Book Description

Following the overwhelming success of "The Cosby Show" in the 1980s, an unprecedented shift took place in television history: white executives turned to black dollars as a way of salvaging network profits lost to videocassettes and cable TV. Not only were African-American viewers watching disproportionately more network television than the general population but, as Nielsen finally realized, they preferred black shows. As a result, African-American producers, writers, directors, and stars were given an unusual degree of creative control over shows such as "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," "Roc," "Living Single," Martin, and "New York Undercover." Locating a persistent black nationalist desire--a yearning for home and community--in shows produced by and for African Americans, Kristal Brent Zook shows how these productions revealed complex and contradictory politics of gender, sexuality, and class. Incorporating interviews with such prominent executives, producers, and stars as Keenen Ivory Wayans, Quincy Jones, Robert Townsend, Charles Dutton, and Yvette Lee Bowser, this study looks at both production and reception among African-American viewers. Zook provides nuanced readings of the shows themselves as well as the political and historical contexts in which they emerged. Though much of black television during this time was criticized for being "trivial" or "buffoonish," Color by Fox reveals its deep-rooted ties to African-American protest literature, autobiography, and a collective desire for social transformation.

1 out of 5 stars Superficial at best.......2004-01-16

A cursory look at a serious topic. This should have been a wonderful book, but it leaves the reader with a profound sense of disappointment. An important era in black TV has been missed, and awaits more competent treatment.

4 out of 5 stars A Must for Followers of Black Television.......2001-05-15

Bravo to Kristal! I have had a tremendous interest in the behind-the-scenes events of Black television. I read tv credits with a microscope (figuratively speaking) and it was a joy to read excerpts of Kristal's interviews with the likes of Ralph Farquhar, Robert Townsend and Yvette Lee Bowser. These are my role models and now Kristal Brent Zook is one as well.

We are short on critics with the type of sensibilities Kristal clearly has for the black community, political viewpoints and scholarship.

I look forward to more from Dr. Zook. Color by Fox is a great start. Don't miss out on the first publication from someone from which we are sure to hear more.

            1 out of 5 stars Waste.......2000-07-23

I wanted this book to drop some science on me about the recent waves of shows that I cared about -- but this book didn't do it. It doesn't seem like she talked to any of the people that really mattered -- maybe she talked to a few people on this show and than, but I didn't know more after reading this book than from reading TV guide. I didn't like this book because it seemed like she had one thing to say and kept saying it over and over again and did not delve into anything with any depth.

5 out of 5 stars Race and Media: the Real Deal.......2000-04-21

This is a seriously important book. Zook makes a strong claim for the appeal of such Black-produced shows like In Living Color, Roc, South Central, The Fresh Prince of Bell Air, Living Single, Martin, and New York Undercover to a largely Black audience. Zook argues and illustrates how these shows were built off a Black autobiographical tradition of Black writers, producers, and actors. As I remember watching the shows, they often dealt with intraracial group issues that though not always easily understood by white viewers were nevertheless both entertaining and culturally important to Black viewers. I'm not sure if there are similiar or better works published that deal with Zook's claims and analysis. Many of the shows listed above delt with complicated issues of race, class, and gender surely not found in mainstream shows. In her analysis, she explores four common traits that reappear in these shows: "these can be summarized as: autobiography, meaning a tendacy toward collective and individual authorship of black experience; improvisation, the practice of inventing and ad-libbing unscripted dialogue or action; aeasthetics, a certain pride in visual signifiers of blackness; and drama, a marked desire for complex characterization and emotionally challenging subject."

An entire media literacy course could be built around this book. Probably at no other time or in the near future will we see Black representation as culturally sensistive as it was during the time these shows were cast on Fox. It's important that we use these shows as case studies for the future of Black representation in the media.

I would love to dialogue with others who choose to read this book. Write me not at the above address, but at BChavanu@excite.com.

            1 out of 5 stars A Missed Opportunity.......1999-06-19

As a Professor of African American Studies, I was deeply disappointed by this book. The author seemed intent on keeping it real instead of getting it right -- a cardinal sin for any academic. This is a worthy topic for a good book -- perhaps someday that book will be written, by someone more capable.

The screenshots and other images are sharp and appropriate, the indexing makes navigation easy, and the tips and tricks peppering the text will save you time and hair loss.

On the CD-ROM, you'll find a wealth of Excel-related files and applications, including Spreadsheet detective and Evolver, as well as the complete text of this book. If you're a serious number cruncher, you'll need both Excel and Special Edition: Using Microsoft Excel 2000. --Rob Lightner

            Book Description

Special Edition Using Microsoft Excel 2000 puts a renewed emphasis on realistic applications and uses of the program features. This book does NOT take the cradle to grave approach in coverage. You get the most focused content and value of the essential intermediate to advanced level coverage. Additional coverage of undocumented features, often ignored topics, and practical advice on how to set up a "designer" look spreadsheet is provided. There is no waste of space--or your time--on beginner level coverage.

            Customer Reviews:

            2 out of 5 stars A real disappointment--information hard to find, incomplete.......2004-03-26

This book has been a real disappointment. It has two main problems. The first problem is that it's very difficult to locate relevant information--the index is very poorly constructed, and even obvious and common tasks can be hard to track down. For example, I needed to know how to make a data point on a dot plot be hollow. This isn't an unusual task, and it's quite easy, *once you know how.* Good luck finding out how from this book, though.

The second problem is that the information provided is often quite sketchy--an unexpected feature in a book that is over 1000 pages long. In the worst case, I found that for a whole class of features that I needed documentation on (Excel's built-in statistical tests), it actually referred me to Excel's help feature. Obviously, if that were adequate, I wouldn't have bought the book!

The fact that this book hasn't caused me any actual damage saves it from a one-star review; however, if you need either a tutorial or a comprehensive reference on Excel 2000, this is not the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2004-01-16

This book is a complete waste. Completely unorganized and hard to follow sequences. Examples are poorly structured and hard to understand. Don't buy this.

2 out of 5 stars Disorganized and unhelpful.......2003-02-22

This is one of the most disorganized and unhelpful books I have ever read. Let's say you want to construct a formula. Ghapter 10 is called "Constructing Excel Formulas." Great! But wait: no where in chapter 10 is there a section on actually constructing the formulas. After telling us how to see a sum, it jumps into editing. We haven't even constructed anything to edit! Or let's say you want to hide a column. Look in the index under "hiding" and it tells you to go to page 583. On 583 it says "[y]ou can hide information by using the drilldown technique on PivotTables." How helpful can you be! Actually, on page 582 it gives some more hints: "You can hide [in italics] (page 470) rows or columns that you don't want to show...." And so the reader goes to page 470 to find out how to do this. On page 470 it says "You can maintain a chart's integrity [?] even if you hide [in italics] (page 521) the data.... Ok, the little bugger is on page 521 now, eh. And, indeed, on page 521, we are led full circle: "Of course, because Excel users learn quickly how to hide [in italics] (page 470 [also in italics!]) and unhide (page 583 [?]) cells, hiding provides very little real protection." Fortunately, if Excel users use this book, hiding cells will afford great protection. No one would ever be able to "unhide" them.

5 out of 5 stars I would give it more stars if there were available.......2002-05-02

I have been comfortable with Excel since the first time it was taught to me. This book maintains that level of confidence between the program and my experience. I sought after complicated issues and VBA and this book helped me quite a bit. I didn't pay attention to the beginner's section but I would say that it covers just about enough in the advance level.

3 out of 5 stars A good overview, but not much VBA.......2001-12-29

This is a good overview of the main features of Excel. I learned a lot about features that are tucked away and hidden in menus that I had never seen before.

However, the function examples are a bit lacking. The authors provide overviews of only the most common functions, and even then they lack good examples for most of them. Also, when they get into the Macro/VBA section, they provide only a brief overview without much detail. Also, one of the authors spends an inordinate amount of time showing how to create Gantt charts; This may or may not be what you want.

Overall, a good book if you are new to Excel, but you'll need more if you use a lot of functions or macros.

This book has lots of good basic instruction, handy tricks, and cool scripts/plugins. It is the antithesis of a per-menu-item manual; it is task-oriented, focused, useful. Can't go wrong with this if you want to do some specific tasks with Office.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of tips, but still not all the answers.......2001-10-03

I bought "Woody Leonhard Teaches MSO 2000" and realized that I needed a more advanced book on MSO 2k, so I bought the Special Edition (SE).

Yes, it covers by far more topics than the first one I bought... but not all: It does not have all the answers for my questions, and maybe just the same for yours. For example, it doesn't cover MS Equation Editor (the one you use in Word). OK, I found interesting (and maybe useful later) info on handling formulae in Word and Excel, but not on editing equations.

I had found a solution for my problem before searching in the SE book, but I wanted a faster one (mine was somehow time-consuming). The book had nothing better to offer.

Moreover, even though this SE had the solution for other problems, it was difficult to find through the book. You have to read section after section till find what you need.

One more problem you should consider are the differences between editions of Office 2k, say, language or release time. What worked for one Office 2k didn't work for another Office 2k. This might not be a fault of the book, but think on it if you are going to use it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2001-07-06

I know Tina Turner says it , but it's true, this book is like no other and is simply the best one I have encountered. No techno-speak here. Plain language that all can comprehend. If you have this book, you have no need for the rest. 5 Stars guys, and if they had a higher rating, you'd be guaranteed to have it. Thanks for the input.

5 out of 5 stars The book is great! But the software..........2000-10-30

I have found the book to be absolutely indispensable! I found every thing I needed, spelled out in plain and easy to understand language. I am no computer geek, but now I can certainly make Office 2000 do geeky things! My friends are in awe!

However... The book comes with a set of enhancements called the WOPR pack. Many of the utilities are very useful, though some of them are handy only to certain types of writing. One problem is that there are a few bugs in the programs (The Zip code lookup feature for one) that have not been remedied. Posts at the WOPR website indicate that this problem has existed since at least January 2000, and there is still no fix, or even a mention that they are working on it! Emails asking for help or information go unanswered and the posts on the message boards keep piling up asking when there will be a fix.

For people so good at asking Microsoft where the fixes are, you would think they would take some of their own advice and at least admit they have been unable to fix the darn thing!

Don't let this criticism dissuade you from buying the book, just be aware that the software is not perfect and the support leaves a lot to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Office 2000.......2000-07-20

As a person who has worked on and off for years with the previous Office products, I figured it was time to learn Office 2000 well. This book is just what I was looking for: Easy to understand, comprehensive, and full of great tips.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best on the topics.......2004-03-12

I don't know where the previous reader was coming from but this was one of the most comprehensive and organized books on Excel and Word that I have read (and I read lots of them.)

2 out of 5 stars OK for Excel - hopeless for Word.......2001-06-20

This book looked great in the bookstore, when I was looking for an Excel guide with some help on Word. But when I got it back to the office I found that the index lacked adequate references to Word functions. You would expect that the index would have at least a reference to every term in the drop-down lists from the main Word toolbar. No, it doesn't. So, if you are looking for help with Word, look elsewhere. Can I suggest, too, that you take any computer book on appro for a day or two - save you falling into the trap I fell into.

On the Excel side, it is OK but - like Microsoft products themselves - it assumes you want lots of options to make things pretty for a "presentation" rather than making your work more productive for analysis. That is, I have lots of big spreadsheets that I work on intensively. I'll spend half a day on one spreadsheet working out what it can tell me. Then I'll do a summary table or maybe a graph or two. But this book assumes you work the other way about: you have a handful of data which requires virtually no analysis and you are prepared to spend a day making it look pretty.

            Look elsewhere.
