Book Description
A solid foundation for learning all aspects of the sounds of singing, this manual is highly recommended as an aid for singers and teachers. Widely adopted as an auxillary text, the book is designed specifically so that singers can lead themselves through the text.
Customer Reviews:
Great IPA for singers.......2003-11-18
If you want to get to the heart of great diction in singing, you must go through this book carefully and methodically. You will never be sorry you did.
A very good way to introduce IPA to young singers.......2002-12-24
I absolutely love this book. It is by far the best publication I have found to teach young singers the basics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). I found it very easy to understand and their are excellent charts for easy references. Although there are a few ocassional exceptions to rules that could be more easily explained, the basics are taught well. It receives my highest recommendation as a vocal instructor.
A Very Helpful Book for Singers!.......2000-06-03
This book provides the reader/singer with exersises that will help them with diction, communication, pronounciation, and other techniques needed to be an expert singer. If you want to learn the "rules" of singing correctly--here's a good way to start!
Customer Reviews:
Still the standard.......2007-07-11
The classic text on English diction for singers, a must for every classical singers and vocal coach. Well-presented and lucidly written.
One should bear in mind, however, that this is "high" English diction written by a British author. In singing art song, oratorio and opera well, one cannot go wrong here. However, as folk song and American art song enter the repertoire more and more, there will need to be a greater awareness of American lyric diction and more informal (but still elegant) diction, which is often legitimately applied. Excellent lyric diction is not about trying to sound affectedly British, but about presenting text with clarity, projective power, beauty, and authenticity--in a way that is vocally healthy and natural.
The Singer's English Diction Bible.......2000-08-24
As a vocal technique teacher for more than 25 years, I've had plenty of experience using this book. Ms. Marshall's rules may sound stilted or downright weird by today's "standards," but when applied by a singer who knows and uses correct vocal technique, the singer instantly understands why she wrote what she wrote. I hope this never goes out of print!
Review of "The Singers' Manual of English Diction".......2000-04-06
This is a well-written book on the phonetics of English diction. It is a good book and contains most but not all the rules and pronunciations of words in the English language. Just like any book involving vocal diction, this book does have variations of pronunciations, but not many. Overall it is a good addition to have in any singers collection.
Book Description
Some of this countrys most imaginative and influential thinkers explore questions such as how science gains authority to direct truth practices, the boundaries between humans and machines, and how science, technology, and medicine contribute to the fashioning of selves. Fieldwork sites include a prenatal sonogram clinic, an inner-city AIDS clinic, a center for brain imaging technology, and a particle physics lab.
Book Description

Voices are increasingly in demand for commercials, cartoon characters, announcements, and other voice-over spots. This outstanding handbook explains how to launch a career and find work. Along with sample commercials and script copy, the author gives advice on vocal exercises, on self-promotion, and on business matters, and this expanded edition includes new tips on making a demo CD; vocal modulation and breath techniques; advanced copy-reading techniques; and a section on how copywriters see the job of the voice artists they write for.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-read.......2007-10-04
I'm at the beginning of my career in voice-over and I've read a good handful of books on the topic and taken tons of classes...but rarely has anyone "broken down" the essentials of technique quite as clearly and succinctly as Elaine Clark does in this book. For the first time, I felt like I had some practical tools I could refer to when approaching copy, which not only gave me a promising ground to start from, but also helped build my confidence and desire to "stick-to-it." Rather than give you hollow, abstract phrases about the need to connect emotionally to the copy, she shows you "how" to make it "yours." Obviously she's a great teacher with a lot of experience, as she leaves no stone unturned in this book with regards to what to expect in every aspect of this career and how to be best prepared so that you can succeed.
My Favorite Book on Voiceover.......2007-08-16
Elaine Clark is my guru. I have read this book a number of times since purchasing it in 2001, and I return to a number of specific passages when I need a refresher. Having worked steadily in this business for 20+ years, and having purchased many books on voice acting, I 've found "There's Money Where Your Mouth Is" to be my absolute favorite. The reader is taken from the basics to the multitude of details involved in running your own successful voice-over business.
Thanks to Elaine Clark, I have grown professionally as a voice actor, and enhanced my voice acting and copy interpretation skills.
get this book.......2006-04-21
If you are at all interested in VO, get this book. I read it cover to cover a year ago, and I've been cherry picking those areas that I've needed to focus on ever since. Now that I've marked up my copy at least three times and pages are starting to break loose of their binding, I'm ready to get an agent and start working. If your an actor or improvisor this book will help all areas of your artistic endeavors. The nuances & subtleties of speech are examined in great detail. The bottom line throughout this book is how to stop "acting" and be real. The market is hungry for every day real people. There's a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, pick it up.
Very helpful.......2005-10-24
This book is very helpful for those new to the industry. It contains information about putting your demo together, about getting an agent, and has sample copy to practice with, and tips for exercising your voice. I definitely reccomend this for anyone who is interested in trying this line of work for the first time.
Great book........2005-09-28
This book can be helpful for actors starting out. I have found that the actors I work with in my private practice need exercises to get them prepared for the biz.

Confusing and Incorrect.......2002-05-03
I puchased this book, in addition to many other telecom books and found this to be one of the worst ones. Not only is the information useless it is written in a diffucult to understand fashion. I recommend that you do not waste corporate money of this book.
Grade A Content, C for Delivery.......2001-12-11
I'm new to telecom and bought this book to get up to speed. I must say first and foremost that I am getting up to speed.
But right after that I have to say that I can't read more than 10 pages in a row without finding a glaring error. For example, the term "jitter" is defined twice in two pages. Why? Plenty of typos, some of the illustrations look like the postscript monster ate them, and the 1,000 pages could easily be condensed to 500-600 by getting rid of redundancy.
For example, the difference between analog amplifiers and digital repeaters is defined around 5 times in the first 300 pages (with more or less the same illustration at least two of those times). So, yeah, I get the concept now and couldn't forget it if I wanted to, but I didn't need to be told so many times.
All that said, if I would recommend this book to anyone new to telecom, but advise them to be gentle critics or keep their red pens handy.
Keep looking for "the" one-stop, comprehensive telecom book.......2001-11-25
I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I bought "Voice and Data Communications Handbook, Fourth Edition" (VADCH:4E) to gain a general understanding of communications technologies beyond the LAN. Although the book mentions all of the systems which interested me, I was not satisfied with the manner in which they were covered. VADCH:4E is better than Ross' "Telecommunications Technologies" but inferior to Green's "Irwin Handbook of Telecommunications." Nevertheless, I'm still looking for an author who delivers the goods on voice and data communications essentials.
VADCH:4E's table of contents is sure to impress; it mentions T carriers, VPNs, X.25, Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, SMDS, Frame Relay, ISDN, ATM, DSL, SS7, LNP, Cellular/PCS, WAP, 3G Wireless, SONET/SDH, and other key telecom systems and concepts. Unfortunately, I rarely finished a chapter with a good grasp of the material. I desperately searched for clues to questions I felt were key to understanding each technology. Rather than launching into an extended discussion of each system, I would have preferred hearing exactly how each technology works, with comparison to other technologies. More is not better if the "more" isn't helpful!
VADCH:4E is advertised as being "straightforward and jargon-free." This approach supposedly appeals to management types. In reality, the book swings wildly from mind-numbing grade-school-level analogies to material only understood with outside references. A 1074 page book needs to pick a writing style and stay the course. Otherwise, it alienates both nontechnical and technical readers. (Incidentally, technical readers may wonder why the authors believe Windows screen savers contribute to LAN traffic; see page 674 to read this odd claim.)
On a positive note, VADCH:4E consistently offered useful information on the history and business rationale for many telecom systems. Many of the connectivity diagrams were excellent. (These were usually offset by cheesy "clip-art" type graphics elsewhere, unfortunately.) VADCH:4E also includes descriptions of the framing formats for most telecom transmission systems.
Overall, I don't recommend reading a book this large if it doesn't answer the key questions I expect readers to ask. While I'm more familiar with telecom basics after reading VADCH:4E, I still hope another book makes more sense of the telecommunications environment.
Worst College Book of all time.......2001-10-19
Ok well it may not be the worst book that I have used for college but it is on my top 5 list. I hate this book!!! The chapters are long. It uses to many acronyms. I hate having to go to a previous chapter just to find out what IEC stands for. But the worst thing of all is the chapter questions. You really have to search for the answer. The questions do not go in order with the chapter making it a very time consuming task to answer the questions (especially when you have 10 other chapters to complete in one day). Come on make it easier on us college students, we have enough to do already. I guess this book could be alot worse but it also could be alot better. Its very hard to stay awake when reading this book.
There's nothing perfect in this world.......2001-08-30
I think so far, this is the most complete book ever. This book covers a thorough explaination for (almost) every telecommunication issue. Althogh maybe the book does not explain every updated issue or every topic in deep, I think this book is still the best (hey, there's nothing perfect in this world!). I think the author more concerned on a complete basic understanding rather than a thorough explaination in "every-every" topic. This book is, I think, perfect for every beginner and comfortable for every experiences.
Also, I think the author likes jokes and fun. This makes the book more interesting to read. From the book dimension, the price, and also the contents; this book is a "real deal" for everybody in telecommunication industry.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent "foundations" book!.......2007-03-24
This book covers wide variety of topics with such educated and organized fashion that the only thing I can say is: "I wish I had books like that when I was in school! " The book does have a "college" feel to it... Each chapter ends with the list of questions, to help you better understand and learn the subject discussed and do it the with maximum effect.
As authors state, "... if you are looking for techno-babble as designed by propeller heads, there are many other books on the market." and "If you want to learn the basics without having a degree in engineering... you came to right place."
The book is definitely not intended to be read from cover to cover. Personally, I obtained the book for the subjects of VoIP, IP Telephony, DSL and SIP - and I am not disappointed! This is a well written and structured book. Other chapters cover: OSI model, regulation in the industry, modulation and multiplexing, wireless communications, catv, and much more!
I would re-arrange some chapters, but this is my personal opinion which does not take away the value of the book.
All in all, this 600+ pages - 19 chapter treasure has found a well deserved place on my bookshelf!

Customer Reviews:
VoiceXML for very beginners.......2001-12-12
The book is a general overview of telephony application and a thin introduction to VoiceXML. It covers important matters in a very rapid and unprecise way. It contains even errors in the examples.
An indispensable "how to" reference.......2001-10-15
In The VoiceXML Handbook: Understanding And Building The Phone-Enabled Web, computer telephony expert Bob Edgar takes the reader through a step-by-step introduction through all the features of VoiceXML (including VoiceXML 2.0). Readers will learn about Graphical Web Browsing, HTML, and HTTP; Telecommunications; Computer Telephony; Voice Recognition and Text-to-Speech; and XML. Also provided are a VoiceXML Tutorial and instructions on using Voice Browsers to crated Phone-Enabled Web Sites. The VoiceXML Handbook is an indispensable "how to" reference for anyone who needs to enhance their website with telephony-enabled technology and ability.
Not so informative........2001-09-20
I can find more information on the internet on this subject than reading this book. In fact I turned to the internet while reading this book for answers to the questions this book failed to answer.
An Excellent Overview.......2001-08-05
I am director of user interface design at Audiopoint in Fairfax, Virginia -- a voice portal/voice technology company. I work mostly in human factors, not programming. This book is exactly what I've been looking for, because it gives, I feel, an excellent overview of the many kinds of systems, software, and hardware that are involved in the work I do. I agree with another reviewer, who said that the author clearly states that not all the examples will work in every case, for various reasons. The great plus for me is that, even though my training is not for the most part in technology, I could still understand the book. The author takes you, usually, from the very beginning, and gives you the big, simple picture, which is crucial to have fixed firmly in your mind. This book is making it much easier for me to understand our IT people and talk with techies, and visualize various products which I'd like to see our company launch. So I give this book top rating....
Not very informative.......2001-07-31
As a VoiceXML developer, I looked forward to this book. I was disappointed. Too much time was spent speculating on Version 2.0 and not enough time explaining Version 1.0. If you are looking to learn VoiceXML this is not the book.

Book Description
The advent of new multimedia, video-conferencing, and Intranet architecturesÑand the need to meld them with data and voice into a single hybrid network that exploits the strengths of each architecture, while allowing them all to coexist and share the same transmission mediumÑhas vastly increased the complexity and difficulty of the network administrator's job. This definitive, single-volume reference to advanced network architectures is an easy-to-use handbook that can help any networking professional cope with the challenges posed by hybrid networks.
Customer Reviews:
A long chat.......2000-09-07
People facing networking problems, even if as user only, would like to find answers for three kind of questions: What is a network and how does it work? You can read the book by Tanenbaum Computer networks to find it out. Which requirements have I to meet to design a network? And the book Practical Computer Network Analysis and Design by McCabe is good for this task. How can I design it in order to integrate required services and choose the right equipment to build it? And the book by Taylor does NOT provide an answer, not even useful hints. Maybe it tries to, maybe it is obsolete, the author takes more than five hundred pages (plus appendixes) to say actually nothing but a long and never ending chat, in which many subjects are often repeated, using a vague language. More details are explained about protocols, but, despite the title of the book and inside chapters, very little is said about their relation to network design. However, you can find almost everywhere publications providing any detail you need about protocols, so you don't need to purchase a textbook about network design. And a bit more, but just a bit, can be found in the last chapters about bridging and routing (that is why I think the book deserves two stars instead of one). But for these last subjects, in my opinion, the book provides you material to speak about networks in a pub in the same way other people speak about sport or girls. But nothing else.
The Network Architecture Design Handbook : Data, Voice, Mult.......2000-03-25
I found The Network Architecture Design Handbook to be one of the best books on the subject of hybrid and LAN\WAN networking. I highly recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in learning more or just looking to expand his or her knowledge base in this fascinating field.
