Good.......2006-05-20
Old music vs. new, old methods vs. new methods, digital vs. analog, all these "enemies" are presented here in detail coupled with an analysis of cons and pros of every part involved. The book is a bible for those just starting in the music industry, and a revelation for people that have been in the business for a long time. New technologies and methods take over the old school and many people have a hard time adjusting, this title will help all these people get through the transition easy and without problems.
Lost in the process?.......2006-05-16
The process of making songs and getting them signed can be really daunting, and lots of real talent is stomped out because they get too overwhelmed. But this book is a good overview, and a great guide you should follow. If you feel stuck in the process, just give this book a glance and you'll see what you should do next. Also read "How To Make A Furtune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" by Ty Cohen.
This book was a great overview.......2004-10-06

Book Description
Ann Kelly's provocative book breaks the mold of Swift studies. 20th-century scholars have tended to assess Jonathan Swift as a pillar of the 18th-century "republic of letters," a conservative, even reactionary voice upholding classical values against the welling tide of popularization in literature. Kelly's Swift is instead a practical exponent of the popular and impresario of the literary image. She argues that Swift turned his back on the elite to write for a popular audience, and that he annexed scandals to his fictionalized print alter ego, creating a continual demand for works by or about this self-mythologized figure. A fascinating look at popular print media, the commodification of the author, culture formation, and modern myth making, this book opens new ground in our understanding of one of the greatest English writers.

Every once in a while, a truly charismatic gymnast comes along, like Olga Korbut, Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton -- and Dominique Moceanu. This 70-pound acrobatic marvel became the youngest U.S. national gymnastics champion ever at the age of 13, and is poised to take the entire gymnastics world by storm with new moves of amazing difficulty. She's also a crowd-pleasing performer who likes to have a good time while she competes. Young gymnasts will enjoy this book about her life, training and love of gymnastics.
Book Description
At thirteen, Dominique Moceanu burst into the gymnastic spotlight by becoming the youngest U.S. national gymnastics champion ever. Her awesome performance at all the major 1995 U.S. competitions, and at the World Championships, wowed the crowds--and won her countless medals. Now, at only
seventy pounds and four feet, five inches, Dominique is psyched to take the 1996 Summer Olympics by storm. Under the guidance of her renowned coach, Bela
Karolyi, Dominique will perform dynamic gymnastic routines sure to dazzle fans around the world! In her own words, Dominique talks about her passion for
gymnastics, her years of training, her favorite events, her coach, her teammates, her family, and everything else you want to know about her life in and out of the gym. Dominique Moceanu's leap to stardom is an American dream come true.
Customer Reviews:
What's the point?.......2005-08-20
Dominique Moceanu "wrote" this book at the peak of her career, when she was 13 years old and had just won the 1995 Senior National Championships before the 1996 Olympics. Thus, judging from the early age which she "wrote" it (it says AS TOLD to Steve Woodward), it isn't the best autobiography in the world.
Yes, Dominique describes her childhood and early gymnastics at the beginning and then moves onto describe her rise to elite gymnastics and competing in bigger meets. Since the book doesn't describe every single meet event-by-event, some may like that a little bit better than other books about her.
However, it is simply too short, and I belive, written at the wrong time. She could have waited until at least her Goodwill Games victory in 1998 before doing this, or even after the 1996 Olympics.
But that's not all- according to Dominique after she filed a lawsuit against her parents in 1998 or so, she called this book a "fable." Yeah, that's right. She goes on to praise her parents in her little fable of an autobiography that shows how perfect her life must have been at this point in her gymnastics career, and then we see that Dominique Moceanu's life isn't so wonderful after all.
Overall, if you're looking for a fabulous comprehensive true biography of Dominique, please, by all means, skip this one. If you want a quick little read with more fiction than fact, go ahead and read this. It has some decent-looking pictures, if that counts for anything.
Written by a 13 year-old? Amazing!.......2004-05-12
This book is an autobiography that Dominique Moceanu wrote before heading to Atlanta in the 1996 Olympics.
Dominique Moceanu was perhaps America's favorite gymnast at the time, and she was so famous that she wrote her autobiography before going to the Olympics, instead of after. I would have preferred it after, because I would love to hear about her experience in Atlanta.
The book is very well written and had many good photos and it gave me an informative look into the life of Dominique.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I would recommend it to anyone.
Too short - better for younger readers.......2003-02-01
I would recommend this book for younger readers. It doesn't give a whole lot of detail about events in her life and, being a huge gymnastics fan, it is not one of the best gymnastics books I've read.
Nice!.......2002-01-22
I have never cared much for Dominique Moceanu, (and I still don't), but I must say that this book was a very interesting look at her pre-Olympic escapades. It is very detailed, and slightly shocking at the same time. Dominique just sets herself up for stalkers and other obsessive weirdos...
Anyway, the thing I like most about this is that she has written this herself, and that the book gives the reader an idea of just what the life of an elite gymnast is really like. A good read, and a must for Dominique fans.
NOT BAD FOR A 13 YEAR OLD.......2000-12-19
I think that Domi did a great job with this book. For young gymnasts or fans, it is an inspiring story. Dominique starts from her young childhood describing her life both in the gym and out. She wrote the book when she was 13, and while it's not great, it is definitely good and worth reading.

Book Description
When Microsoft made Visual Basic into an object-oriented programming language, millions of VB developers resisted the change to the .NET platform. Now, after integrating feedback from their customers and creating Visual Basic 2005, Microsoft finally has the right carrot. Visual Basic 2005 offers the power of the .NET platform, yet restores the speed and convenience of Visual Basic. Accordingly, we've revised the classic in a Nutshell guide to the Visual Basic language to cover the Visual Basic 2005 version and all of its new features.
Unlike other books on the subject, Visual Basic 2005 in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition doesn't assume you're a novice. It's a detailed, professional reference to the Visual Basic language-a reference that you can use to jog your memory about a particular language element or parameter. It'll also come in handy when you want to make sure that there isn't some "gotcha" you've overlooked with a particular language feature.
The book is divided into three major parts: Part I introduces the main features and concepts behind Visual Basic programming; Part II thoroughly details all the functions, statements, directives, objects, and object members that make up the Visual Basic language; and Part III contains a series of helpful appendices. Some of the new features covered include Generics, a convenient new library called My Namespace, and the operators used to manipulate data in Visual Basic.
No matter how much experience you have programming with Visual Basic, you want Visual Basic 2005 in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition close by, both as a standard reference guide and as a tool for troubleshooting and identifying programming problems.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference if you have some VB experience.......2007-08-10
This book is a really good reference. It has made me much more efficient. It has good information of the new features of VB 2005. It has several chapters on the basics of VB as well as advanced features such as generics and attributes. I would definitely recommend buying it if you are already familiar with VB and want a good reference book for VB 2005. I try not to program without it within arms reach
It says it's for the beginner... that would be incorrect........2007-01-25
Despite the perception that Visual Basic should be something to learn out of a book, despite the perception that this book gives (inasmuch as it states that the book is designed for someone who wants to learn Visual Basic .net as their first language) this hardly deals with the practical applications of the program and deals more with syntax.
If I had to compare it with something, I'd say it was like being handed all of the components of a car-- new, shiny, efficient, and much assembly required. The book was a real let-down in the sense I thought I'd be buying a tutorial and ended up with a paperweight. It gets two stars because it frankly IS a good desk reference if you have the program and several other tutorial books which do what this book had initially promised.
Fantastic Desktop Reference.......2006-06-21
Visual Basic 2005 In A Nutshell is a wonderful companion reference for any and all VB developers. With the new features in the 2005 version of VB, this guide is a great book to have by your side when you are working on your latest Visual Basic application.
Packed with nearly 750 pages of reference material, this is a great books that is written well, without too much bloat (just the way I like it). The first 150 pages cover the basics of using the VB language, the next 300 is reference for keywords, classes, functions, etc, and the 300 page or so covers the 'My' reference (VERY IMPORTANT) and other odds and ends of the language.
I love the Nutshell books because they cut through the muck and get right to the point. The size of the books make them perfect for keeping by your side, and that familiar brown coloring scheme makes them easy to see on your shelf.
If you program VB, pick this book up, it will truly make your life easier!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Clear and concise with great examples.......2006-03-09
This is a fantastic reference book for VB prorgrammers. The examples are great. They aren't too long and get right to the point of what they are trying to illustrate. The organization is perfect and the writing is crisp.
It's hard to compete with the convenience of the MSDN. But sometimes the MSDN is tough to navigate and it's just easier to pick up a book and find what you are looking for. And the book you pick up should be this book.
A Very Good Book.......2006-02-18
I've always missed the printed help manuals that used to come with development tools. I used to carry them around with me and browse through them whenever I had a bit of time. So I was happy to read this book, which has a nice big PRINTED reference section. There are several sections that cover various topics such as object orientation, data types, delegates & events, operators, and so on. The book also covers the new features of Visual Basic 2005, such as operator overloading and generics. My favorite part is the section on the My namespace. Cool stuff.
This is mainly a reference book. The authors did a very good job of also making this a readable book. That's a rare feat.
Bottom line: this book is a keeper, and will be sitting on my bookshelf at work.

Book Description
The .NET platform gives Visual Basic developers access to an entirely new and comprehensive class library that promises to further simplify and speed VB application development. In VB.NET Core Classes in a Nutshell, VB Programmers will find a concise and thorough reference to the types found in the core namespaces of the .NET Framework Class Library. The heart of this book is a classic Nutshell Quick Reference to all the types found in 22 core .NET namespaces. The entry for each type describes its significance, explains how the type is used in .NET applications and lists its members and their signatures in readable VB.NET syntax. The core namespaces documented in this book include types in the following areas:
- Essential system and programming services found in the System namespace
- Text handling and regular expression pattern searches
- Diagnostics, debugging, and performance monitoring
- Generalized and specialized collection objects
- Reflection
- Extensible Markup Language (XML)
- Input/output and serialization
- Networking
- Threading and timers
- COM interop and globalization
An essential companion to VB.NET Language in a Nutshell, this book completes a two-volume reference that VB.NET programmers will turn to repeatedly in both its print and online versions. Thanks to a special partnership between O'Reilly and Microsoft, now you can integrate the content from this "In a Nutshell" title with the Dynamic Help inside Visual Studio .NET. Once you install the plug-in using the enclosed CD-ROM, you'll have full access to its 22 namespace overviews and 700-plus type entries. Requires Visual Studio .NET or Visual Basic .NET.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2003-06-01
As expected, this is a top notch book. Includes the information I was expecting, and a little bonus: not only can you install the VB.NET Core Classes information, but the CD that comes with this book includes all the information (for integration into VS.NET) for the VB.NET Language Reference, also by O'Reilly. So, while you only get the hard-copy of one book, you get the information of two. Quite a deal.
Excellent book, in my opinion.......2003-06-01
Okay--I don't dream in code often, and I don't make a living by programming. I do it for fun. I don't have any of the expensive versions of Visual Studio--just the "Standard", cheapie one.
With that said, I love having the framework laid out for me. The fact that it integrates into VS is a big plus. And, if you're undecided, here's a little tip--you can install the VB.NET Core Classes information *AND* the VB.NET Language reference into VS with this CD. I imagine that the VB.NET Language Reference is the same way. Whatever, for the price of one, you get two (albeit only on hardcopy version).
So--well worth the money. I love it.

Amazon.com
Written especially for those readers coming to VB.NET from an earlier version of Visual Basic, VB.NET in a Nutshell offers a quick language tour as well as a nicely thorough reference to all standard VB objects, methods, and properties. Even if you are a raw beginner, this concise reference is really all you need to get onboard with the new version of the world's most popular programming language.
The first sections of this text zero in on what's new and different in VB.NET. From the basics of the language, centering on data types and object-oriented features, this quick-start guide highlights essential language features that every VB.NET programmer needs to know. There's also material here on the underlying .NET framework, from deployment basics (like .NET assemblies) to built-in namespaces. Coverage of delegates and event handling shows how to process events. The substantially different exception handling model of VB.NET is contrasted with the older ways of handling errors.
The heart of this title has to be its reference material (over 400 pages), primarily on the built-in core VB classes in the new .NET version. While there were rumors that VB.NET changed VB completely, this material should reassure you. By providing APIs that resemble older versions, VB programmers still can leverage common string, date, and time and other functions. Every object, method, and property is described, along with sample code, and differences with VB6. A standout here are "gotchas" when using the new APIs compared to VB6. Besides objects and APIs, there is also coverage of language keywords (for logical, looping, and branching statements), too.
The book closes with several useful reference sections, one of which details all the new features to be found in VB.NET. This is almost a must-read for anyone facing the new VB.NET for the first time. Another appendix here lists VB.NET language APIs. While it's true that you can use many languages with .NET, VB.NET Language in a Nutshell covers the APIs that will give VB.NET its real flavor as a new programming language. Both a quick-start guide and a worthwhile reference to use everyday at your desk, this title is a great way to start using VB.NET in real projects quickly. --Richard Dragan

Book Description
With the release of the Microsoft .NET platform comes a new version of Visual Basic dramatically unlike its predecessors. So extensive are the changes, in fact, that some VB programmers argue that Visual Basic .NET is an entirely new programming language. In the updated second edition of this popular book, you will find complete documentation for the Visual Basic .NET language.
Beginning with a brief overview of the language, VB.NET Language in a Nutshell covers basic programming concepts, and introduces the .NET Framework Class Library and programming with attributes. The bulk of the book consists of an alphabetical reference to Visual Basic .NET statements, procedures, functions, and objects. Each entry has a standardized listing containing the following information:
- Its syntax, using standard coding conventions
- Differences in the operation of the keyword in Visual Basic .NET and in VB 6.0
- A list of arguments accepted by the function or procedure
- A description of the data type returned by a function
- The finer points of a language element?s usage that are often omitted from or blurred over by other sources
- Tips and warnings that include undocumented behaviors and practical applications for particular language elements
- An invaluable section for diagnosing or avoiding potential programming problems
- A cross-reference to related keywords
On the CD-ROM (included with print edition of the book) is a plug-in that adds a copy of the book's language reference to the dynamic help within Visual Studio .NET. The plug-in requires any edition of Visual Basic .NET or Visual Studio .NET.
No matter how much experience you have programming with VB, you want this book close by, both as a standard reference guide and as a tool for troubleshooting and identifying programming problems.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference book! .......2005-02-04
I absolutely highly recommend this book.
Having read through several .NET books with no rhyme or reason whatsoever as to how they're put together, I was hoping this book would become a concise _beginning_ point of reference for me.
Boy was I wrong! I use this book constantly. The first week I had it, I referenced it almost daily, and not just for the quick-fix-reminders (in which order do those stupid DateDiff arguments come?). There are nine chapters before the actual reference, which are a veritable tome of information not found anywhere else (at least, not by me). In fact, I'd venture to say that the chapter on OOP should be required reading before you can even download the framework. There are a lot of concepts in that chapter that are required even to build simple apps in ASP.NET (not to mention VB.NET) that in Classic ASP were not necessary.
So, who is VB.NET in a Nutshell good for? The book goes into great detail about the differences between VB 6 and VB.NET: each chapter includes the relevant differences to the topic at hand; and each reference entry includes a section on VB6/VB.NET differences. So if you're looking for a book to ease your transition to the .NET world, this is all you need. If you are new to programming, then you have several chapters on the major concepts, as well as a roughly 450-page section on the VB.NET Language. In fact, on page xi of the preface, it actually says (and I paraphrase): Developers who know Visual Basic; developers who know other programming languages; and developers who are new to programming. Well, shucks, that's pretty much anyone who's reading this review, isn't it?
Stop reading now. Buy it.
I said stop.
A Fair Review.......2004-10-16
This is basically a reference book to VB.NEt Functions.
The book is divided into 2 parts.
Part 1: Gives you A very simplified introduction to VB.NET
and is only 143 small pages.(If you put them together it is only 71 normal page). So do not expect much from this book.
Part 2: about 400 pages is only a reference to the functions.
Button line:
Do not buy this if:
You want to learn VB.NET throughly.
Still I bought it, only because at $2.5(I bought it for that price) it is a good deal for an Index book.
CD not for VS.NET 2003.......2003-06-12
A very handy reference manual. Be aware that the included CD will not integrate the book into Visual Studio.NET 2003.
This is a "In a Nutshell" book.......2003-01-29
I think the book stands up to it's title. It's a quick tour of the VB.NET language for the pro(specially for VB6 users). After i took some courses in VB.NET i was looking for books to read further and this out of many i read has the most clarifying and to the point examples. Certainly has not detailed explanations but that's not it's purpose. It's an overview and i think a bright one.
Another Solid Reference by O'Reilly.......2002-11-26
Let me say this: THIS IS NOT A "HOW TO" BOOK. Aside from that, anyone who is using VB .NET will love and rely on this valuable and well-organized reference. The "In a Nutshell" series by O'Reilly is among the best out there.
