Book Description

Rory Gallagher, Steve Marriott, Rick Derringer and Robin Trower are guitar legends. The glue behind legendary barn-busting, hard-touring outfits like Taste, The Small Faces, Procol Harum and Humble Pie, and later realizing their full potentials as solo artists, this is the first biography - group or otherwise - of four players whose dedication to music and screaming virtuosity has been inspirational to a generation of fans and admirers. Gallagher, Marriott, Derringer and Trower is a candid look at the lives of four men who combined have sold more than 60,000,000 albums. Each has a unique musical story to tell, from roots in American rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll to the joys and perils of life on the road, as well as the pitfalls of fame and the music business. What makes their stories unique is their intense dedication to their art and the fact that the careers of these trailblazing guitarists have never been thoroughly covered in print. This is not a linear, album-by-album study. Rather, it is an in-depth conversation with the artists themselves and those closest to them, including band members, management, record executives, road managers, crew, producers, studio engineers, family and friends: fully authorized, revealing and straight from the source. Features fantastic photographs throughout, many never before seen. Dan Muise has spent his entire 25-year career in the music business covering radio, band management, production and record company promotion. He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

5 out of 5 stars guitars and more.......2007-07-05

i bought this because i'm a big fan of one of these guys...but i read the whole thing...the style employed is relaxed...talking to the artists and those who knew them best. found out lots about the music business and the price of fame. the author has a knack for keeping himself out of the way. it left me feeling like i met these guys...i did meet two of them...ok rory gallegher stopped me on a nyc street and asked me if i knew where there was a guitar store...i did. not your typical rock and roll bio...this is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Four often overlooked greats.......2005-10-22

Without going into any deep analysis of this book I just want to add that while I was reading I went back and listened to the music that these guy made throughout their careers.
Each musician featured is an outstanding guitarist and I have been greatly influenced by most if not all of their work.
Humble Pie was one of the finest British Rock band of all time, and with so little available information about them, I was completely absorbed by their chapter.
This book is a simple treasure.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting romp and a good read.......2004-10-18

Having listened to all of these musicians at one time or another throughout my life, I found this book fun, entertaining, and interesting. Using interviews with actual players on the scene, Muise gives some good insight into each of the musicians. The only real problems I had with the book were a lack of pictures, as well as missing dialogue from Marriott and Gallaher, both of whom were dead at the time of writing. While Muise did include some dialogue from Gallagher and just a tiny bit from Marriot, I felt as though he could have dug up some other interiews and included some other material to beef it up and round out the portraits.

Steve Marriot was one of the greatest of all singer/guitarists to emerge out of the sixties, and he was sorely overlooked by the media during his tenure. Had he been given more deserved attention I can only wonder what he might have become. While Peter Frampton was truly a key ingredient of Humble Pie, it was Marriot who made that band sizzle. I would say, however, that the band was never as good after Frampton left. I would have really liked to have read what Marriot would have had to say about that, and that is what was really missing from the book. We never really get to find out what how Frampton's departure impacted Steve Marriot; we only learned that through the eyes of others, whose perception may or may not have been accurate.

Of all of the musicians featured, I was very disappointed in the attitude of Rick Derringer. He seems to think that he was denied super star status. I listened to all of the major players of the day, and most of the minor ones, and Derringer was easily a minor leaguer, and he ought to be grateful for the fame he achieved. He really came off as a whiner. I really liked much of what he did in the 60s and 70s, but I don't think he was ever a big leaguer; and it should be remembered that there is a reason why there was a top tier of guitarists and singers. For example, he never, ever reached the singing ability of Steve Marriot or the guitarmanship of Rory Gallagher or Robin Trower.

Robin Trower's career, as depicted in Muise's book, was really disappointing. He seems to have mishandled it at every step. Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects was the rationalization of one of his manager, Derek Sutton. Talk about a self absorbed, self serving idiot. It's no wonder musicians get screwed by managers. Reading about Sutton truly made me want to read a good book about rock managers. What a dolt. And the treatment of Jimmy Dewar was just incredible. This was all very interesting. Trower seems to be surrounded by some kind of emotional protective shield, because if I had his behavior, I'd be ashamed.

I really liked this book, and I'd recommend it to anyone with any familiarity of these musicians. I will warn you, however, that reading it will send you to the used record store trying to dig up some of the gems about which they discuss.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar Heroes.......2003-07-12

The book is worth getting for any fan of these four talented guitarists. Its strength is the author's decision to allow the artists themselves, band members, producers, managers, lovers, family members, and friends to talk freely and at length about the musicians' lives and their work. This hands-off approach results in candid portraits of the artists, as well as a realistic glimpse into the murky world of the music business. The interviewees are very forthcoming, which is particularly refreshing and at times quite funny. In the section on Robin Trower, Derek Sutton, his manager and former head of U.S. operations with Chrysalis Records, responds as follows to the author's question about whether at times management deliberately set out to fool musicians: "I think you're giving too much credit for intelligence to the managers. You have to remember, I've said this before and I'll say it again, there aren't a lot of very bright people in this business." Sutton's acerbic snapshots of the members of Procol Harum, the band Trower was in before he went solo, are on par with the best scenes from Spinal Tap.

The chronological accounts of the guitarists' careers keep the narrative clear. At times, however, some of the responses could have been edited a bit more, since a few of the interviewees drift off topic. Also, occasionally transitions from one interview to the next are too abrupt. This could have been averted by more editorial comments connecting each piece with the whole. Finally, while the conclusion to the chapter on Rory Gallagher is moving, the conclusion to the section on Robin Trower is too brusque, especially since this is the conclusion of the book. A postscript to the volume, similar to the author's brief but effective preface, would have been a good idea.

5 out of 5 stars Take 'em or leave 'em! The good & bad of Steve!.......2003-02-03

The chapter on Steve Marriott is worth getting the book alone. I've played in bands back in the 70's & 80's that played songs by all four guys and it was great reading. To hear Frampton, Ridley and Shirley talk about "Gilded Splinters", the "Whiskey A Go Go" gigs (which I have a CD of), the Filmore plus the induction of Clempson into the band is something every Pie fan should have! It's just sad that all the books,CDs and videos came out long after Steve has moved on, but at least we HAVE them now!

Book Description

In the full-frontal follow-up to his critically-acclaimed 'It's a Queer World', in which he famously outed the 'metrosexual', Mark Simpson dispenses with the monkey business of sexuality and finally gets to grips with the organ grinder itself - S E X Subjecting our saucy new god to his sacrilegious satire, Simpson sins against every contemporary commandment about doing the nasty: It must be hot. It must be frequent. It must wake the neighbours. And it must be Who You Are.

Simpson argues that we all put far too much faith in sex these days, and that in fact sex is messy, confusing, frustrating and ultimately disappointing.

Especially if you're having it with him.

Along the way he re-introduces us to his bastard - but impeccably groomed - son the 'metrosexual' (now something big in advertising), is cruised by 'Galen' from Planet of the Apes, gets worked up with Alexis Arquette over Stephen Baldwin's 'bubble butt', goes on a date with a Hollywood divorcee who isn't Elizabeth Taylor, probes Eminem's anal anxiety, explains why Bill Clinton didn't lie about 'that woman', moans that Brad Pitt is a one night stand that won't leave, tries to get his head around Mark Wahlberg's 'talent', and - gingerly - confronts Henry Rollins with those 'gay' rumours.

5 out of 5 stars No Sexual Stone Unturned!.......2002-08-03

You either love him or hate him, but one thing is for certain, once you start reading what Mark Simpson has to say about sex you won't be able to stop. I, for one, was never bored or provoked by what he had to say. Simpson has a way of making you think differently about sex. This from an author who is both hated and respected. You may not agree with his comments but you'll think twice about what he has to say. These essays originally appeared in magazines like Attitude, the Independent, and Vogue Hommes International, etc. I found these essays to be funny, sexy, informative, and intelligently written. This book is a great follow-up to his other book, "IT'S A QUEER WORLD".

The book is divided into four sections; Dirty Words, Dirty Thoughts, Dirty Talk, and Dirty Books. There are about forty-eight essays and six personal interviews included in this collection so it's hard to choose favorites. Each and every one is thought-provoking, whether he's talking about President Clinton in "Slick Willy" (the Oval Office has become the Oral Office); or the Republican Reaction in "The Sex Terror"; or Brad Pitt in the "Pittfall of Being Brad Pitt" (a victim of his own beauty); or "Eminem Melts in Your Mouth"(is Eminem really what he appears to be?). There's sure to be some serious eyebrows raised while reading some of these chapters. Simpson's interviews with Aiden Shaw & Julie Burchill are not to be missed, fascinating. He even confronts Henry Rollins with those `gay' rumors.

Simpson argues there is far too much faith put in sex these days, and it can be ultimately disappointing. What is not disappointing is this book and reading his personal points of view. You will certainly be entertained, educated, and never bored. Perhaps you will even finding yourself thinking differently about sex. This is a book that should be read by all. Simpson really puts things in the proper perspective. Highly Recommended!

If you want to eat free for the next few months then read this book and steal Simpson's witty, wicked lines. You'll be invited to every dinner party in town and be the centre of attention. Why Simpson isn't more famous in the US I don't know - but it suits me just fine. All my friends think I'm the new Oscar Wilde.

If you're like me you only watch "Saturday Night Live" if you're bored our of your gourd or some of your friends are in the featured band. I hate to say it, but the show is simply not funny anymore. And even during the frenetic heyday of SNL, there was a similar show, self-consciously called "Second City TV" that many media afficianados feel was vastly superior to SNL (and in fact, many SNL cast and production staff came to Gotham by way of SCTV, only to be eaten alive).

This is a fun book about an important period of American televisied humor and the people that made it worth watching.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-02-24

I felt this book was missing the overall essense of what SCTV was all about. Few anecdotes on how characters were created and developed. Not all of the SCTV cast participated, which was a letdown.

Unfortunately, I stopped reading after 3/4 of the way through.

4 out of 5 stars For Comedy Lovers.......2005-09-16

In the pantheon of televised comedy, "SCTV" (or "Second City Television") is often cited as a little-seen but much-praised example of the heights of creative brilliance. In "SCTV: Behind the Scenes", former cast member Dave Thomas sifts through his memory bank to recount the tale of the little Melonville station that could.

Now for the disclaimer: I haven't seen all that much of SCTV. NBC did a fair job of running reruns of the show a few years back, but I saw very little of it. I was interested in purchasing the DVD box sets when they first came out simply on word-of-mouth, but the price tags scared me off. So this is my first real look at the show...in a book form.

Back to the review: Dave Thomas recounts the highs and lows of performing cutting-edge sketch comedy at a time when "Saturday Night Live" was gradually becoming the very "showbiz variety" program it had set out to mock. Beginning in 1976, and coming to an end eight years (and several network changes) later, the show was much-heralded but little-seen stateside during its prime. Only in the aftermath of its final Cinemax season, when the various cast members began turning up in a variety of comedy productions, did the show earn a small but cultish audience.

The book starts with Thomas revealing how the show was born from the talents of various stage performers like himself, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, and others. Thomas proceeds to document the various behind-the-scenes struggles that the cast went through with producers and directors, and networks. From its lowly birth to the expansion to the States and going from a half-hour to a full ninety minutes (the "Network 90" version that most people remember when they think of SCTV), Thomas lets the reader in on all the various ups-and-downs that he and the rest of the cast went through to maintain creative control. In a time when producers like Lorne Michaels or Fred Silverman dictated the content, SCTV was unique in having control and final say on the direction of the show.

Unlike its more popular peer SNL, SCTV was not littered with drug problems that picked off cast members ala Belushi or Farley. But they did suffer a big loss years later; Thomas provides a loving memorial to departed John Candy, the only one of the original cast who is not alive for interviews (the other absent voices, Levy and Martin, are thankfully very much alive; their absence is missed, but not necessary).

Again, I wouldn't pretend to be an expert on SCTV, but after reading this book and keeping in mind the comedians who got their start, I feel a little more in awe of what they managed to achieve far from the madding crowd of American television crassness.

Thomas's is not the only voice heard, as various personalities associated with the show (writers, producers, directors, and the cast) share their own tales. The oral history of anything is bound to be fraught with inaccuracies or omitted memories, but the book is coherent on many main points.

From analyzing how he and Rick Moranis became distanced from their castmates thanks to their alter egos Doug and Bob McKenzie, all the way to what the cast are doing now (or "now" as in 1997, when the book was published), Dave Thomas shares memories and lets us in on the way SCTV worked. The result is a loving look back at what many of the cast members feel was their best work. I'll leave that to the more experienced SCTV fanatic to determine that, but for my money "SCTV: Behind The Scenes" is a worthy tribute.

4 out of 5 stars Finally..........2005-08-17

SCTV is starting to get it's due with this book and the release of the DVd collections. Dave Thomas, a founding member of the troup, brings in just about everyone involved in the show to give their 2-cents worth. The book is very comprehensive taking the reader through many of the groups sketches from the original concept idea to the finished sketch. It really is a must read for fans of the show because of the input from cast members and producers, and director and even the hair and makeup talent. My only reason for the four stars and not five stars is the fact that very little attention was paid to the final Cinemax season , which was without Dave Thomas. I guess this is natural, but the final season is given a real short-change treatment and none of the better sketeches are covered in much detail. The book is loaded with pictures and and a per-show sketch budget. very good read.

5 out of 5 stars Great primer as I await the DVD release!.......2004-05-13

This sat on my "wish list" for quite a while because it was unavailable. However, it recently was restocked here at Amazon, and I suspect that it was because of the upcoming release of the first set of DVDs of the show. Well, the wait was worth it, and the timing great! Can't wait to get the DVDs even more now after reading Dave's very interesting, very well produced book. The human stories, the business insights, as well as the hilarious recantings of many legendary skits come together perfectly here. I only wished there were more direct quotes from Eugene and Andrea. It seems Andrea was the most inaccessible, perhaps because of some bad blood between she and Dave (?).

Any true fan of SCTV owes it to themselves to read this book. Very interesting. Very funny.

5 out of 5 stars Blowed Up Good!.......2003-07-08

For years, I'd been waiting for some kind of compendium of SCTV trivia or a chronology of shows, and when this book came out, I had to buy it.

It's missing commentary from a few of the principal cast members, but overall, well worth the investment. The insight into that one episode with Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud alone is worth it, and it's got a well-balanced view of the show from the producers, to the cast, to the production department, make-up artists, etc.

It's a tragedy that this brilliant show hasn't been put on DVD just yet, but it will. SCTV was far more irreverent than SNL, and much cleverer than Monty-Python, not to mention more prolific. Until then, pick this up as an SCTV primer.

2 out of 5 stars Average.......2004-06-04

I found this book to be very average. It glosses over subjects poorly, giving me the impression that the author doesn't have a great understanding of the topics discussed. If there wasn't other great books available, or superb video sites like winstructor.com I would then recommend this. But seeing as books like Mastering Windows Server 2003 and Introducing Windows Server 2003 exist and of course winstructor, then I cannot comprehend why someone would feel they got their money's worth with a purchase of this title.

1 out of 5 stars An expensive coaster.......2003-07-17

I have just purchased the Windows Server 2003 Bible and like the other Bible, it is has a lot of pages, open to interpretation, full of errors and out of date information. For example, Quantum hard drives are a recommended quality drive to purchase. I have no disagreement with the word quality, but Quantum haven't been around for a while and it seems like hardware information wasn't update from the draft copy. This then set the tone of the book. I also found it difficult to read as it seems very disjointed and poorly proof-read with the operating system being called Windows 2003 Server and .Net Server in the same paragraph. This book seems to be based more on Windows XP than the server version. Overall an extremely poor performance.
I have a colleague I don't like so now I have the perfect gift.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-05-22

I thought this book was awesome! It touched on the features of Server 2003 and how it has changed since Windows 2000 Server. If you are an application developer who writes programs for Server 2003 or a System Admin - I highly recommend this book!

Anyone who understands chapter 8 should receive an award from the authors. I believe the authors don't really understand about Active Directory else they could express AD much better.
