A good starting point for research.......2003-12-15
I've worked with this book since I was a freshman in college, and I'm now about to finish my master's in music ed while teaching full-time at a public school. My copy of this book is extremely well highlighted, with lots of notes in the margins. This is the book that I usually go to first if I want to start research on some topic within music education. My only problem with this book is that it is somewhat dated, and hope the authors will do a revision in the near future. In the meantime, this book is still a great resourse.
Useful Supplemental Text for Music Education Majors.......2003-05-21
The content of this text makes it a fine supplement to any "nuts and bolts" textbook for pre-service music teachers. While the authors do not address important topics such as rehearsal planning, teaching skills, and behavior management; they do address several other topics not usually treated in detail in secondary texts -- topics such as music education history, philosophy and aesthetics, psychological and sociological foundations, curriculum development, research competencies, assessment, and current issues in teacher education. I use this as a library reserve item, asking students to present in-class reports on its various topics. An extremely useful supplement that leads to professionally oriented in-class discussions.
A terrible text.......2001-07-24
This book is dreadful. My students hate it and I'm sorry I ever subjected them to it because it makes music and music education seem completely "dead".
A Bad Book.......2001-06-11
We had to read this book for our Foundations course in music education. I found it boring, out of date, poorly written --- altogether, it's a very, very poor introduction to the field of music education by three very pedantic, "out of touch" authors.

In today's multi-ethnic classroom, multiculturalism plays an increasingly vital role. What it is, how it developed, and what it means for education, especially music education, are the questions that form the essence of this book. Music, Education, and Multiculturalism traces the growth and development of multicultural music education in the United States from its start in the early 1900s to the present, and describes the state of multicultural music education internationally. Beginning with a discussion of the philosophical foundations surrounding multiculturalism, Part I addresses the various definitions of multiculturalism and its associated problems and possibilities in both education at large and music education in particular. It offers a succinct discussion of the various philosophical concepts and rationales for a multicultural approach, and concludes with current thoughts and applications in music education. Part II follows multicultural music education in the U.S. as it paralleled changes in general education brought about by social and historical events. The last chapter in this section outlines multiculturalism in music education around the world. Part III focuses on the implications of multiculturalism for music education, both in teacher training and in classroom instruction. Designed to assist music educators at all levels in understanding and implementing multicultural education, Music, Education, and Multiculturalism provides suggestions for curricular development, offers teaching strategies, and provides practical applications including materials and methodologies. Combining personal narrative and oral history with the support of primary and archival documents, this text is essential reading for all students and teachers of the history and foundations of music education and of multiculturalism in general education.

Useful Resource.......2001-01-08
As a Canadian I usually read and advocate Canadian authors especially in the area of multiculturalism as it affects education. Why? Because CANADA is the only country in the world that proclaims MULTICULTURALISM AS NATIONAL LAW. However, I found this book very valuable in gaining a perspective on multiculturalism as it has developed in Anglophone countries around the world (I'm not sure why Volk includes Germany here though).
If you are doing research on multiculturalism and the arts in education, I highly recommend this book for a historical perspective on the topic. Volk is thorough and well read and remains as truthful and to the point at possible when discussing such blatant dichotomies that exist in the American psyche as world promotion of peace in association with the UN whilst maintaining racism and desegregation at home.

Worthless........for some.......2003-01-10
Stupid book, stupid class, waste of time. Unless you are totally, 100% computer illiterate. I have a friend from Arkansas named Shawn, who didn't even know how to turn the computer on (literally), who used this book and is now typing his own personal letterheads and using all the Microsoft programs taught in this book to their full extent. He woulda given it 5 stars if maybe I found some use for it other than starting fires, making patties, disposable coasters, etc.
I propped up a table in the cafe at my college with it...that was about the most use I ever got out of it...
Exploring Microsoft Office 2000 Professional, v. 1.......2000-05-16
Well laid out, high physical quality, effectively written text good for teaching pure beginners how to use this tool [and even v.1 has some tips for those who are experienced] with lots of useful exercises. What limits this to 3 stars is the fact that OUTLOOK 2000 is not covered in any way whatsoever, despite the fact that it is an essential part of OFFICE which is heavily used in many organizations. The index also proved lacking when I wanted to find out about 'speaker's notes' in POWER POINT.

Very comprehensive coverage of Office 2000 application. I get stuck on something, there is an answer! It saves so much of my time! Try it!
